Letter From The President

This has been a busy few months for everyone involved in the field of Early Childhood. The Week of the Young Child has come and gone- a big round of applause for all those who worked so hard to make it so successful. Congratulations to the almost 100 award winners who received their certificates at the WOYC banquet. This was followed by a successful classroom visitation night. Visitors toured classrooms at the York Day Nursery, York YMCA and the Early Head Start/Head Start Cottage. Thank you to everyone who was responsible for participating. Your hard work and dedication are amazing. On May 22 through the 24 the 3 annual Higher Education Institute was held at the Penn Stater Conference Center in State College. This years theme was: Building Quality: Educational Leadership in a Changing World. Representatives from DPW, Pa. Dept. of Education and at the federal level, Health and Human Resources, talked about state of the Commonwealth. Pennsylvania was referred to as the cadillac of early childhood services and as a state to look to when determining where to go next in the field of early childhood. This is due to the dedicated commitment of so many in the state to the growing field of Early Childhood Education. As we enter the summer months please relax, be safe and enjoy and thank you for all you do for the families and children of York County. Sue Yohe

Week of the Young Child

BANQUET
Once again, the Week of the Young Child was a huge success! Many centers across the county celebrated teachers, families, and children in a variety of ways. Some centers held shoe drives to tie in with this years PA One Book, Every Young Child selection. Other centers participated in a virtual strike to highlight the hard work and dedication of early childhood professionals. The highlight of the week was the banquet, which took place at the Valencia. Kurt Kondrich was an incredibly inspirational speaker, as he shared his own personal journey through Early Intervention. It is always awe-inspiring when you see a room full of ECE professionals, and you realize how many years of experience and education are in one room! As teachers stood to be recognized for their education and accomplishments, it was evident that we are lucky to work in York County, surrounded by so many passionate professionals.

NETWORKING NIGHT
The Y.A.A.E.Y.C. Program Committee hosted its Third Annual Networking Night Event, "Tapas for Teachers", on May 5, 2011. This professional development event gave early childhood professionals from York and Adams counties the opportunity to visit three local centers in order to meet directors and teachers, gain ideas, have delicious food, and network with other professionals! Throughout the evening, nearly 50 participants, both Y.A.A.E.Y.C. members and non-members, were able to visit the Early Head Start and Head Start site at Cathy's Cottage, the YMCA of York's Childcare Center, and York Day Nursery. Participants were able to go on a tour of each site, including snapping pictures of their favorite ideas, and visit with a variety of staff at each location. Many participants loved gaining great ideas for artwork, room arrangement, and materials! One of the highlights of the night, and something that many participants commented on, was all the wonderful dialogue between participants and teachers at all the centers, as well as how welcoming all the sites were! With that said, the committee would like to thank the directors, teachers, and staff at each of the three centers for making this event a success! It was all their hard work and commitment that made this a quality event for our early childhood education community! If you are interested in participating in or have any ideas for any future Y.A.A.E.Y.C. events like this, please contact Lisa Young at lyoung@ywcayork.org.

2011 WGAL/Rotary Club Teacher Impact Awards

Cathy Horner, an LIU #12 preschool teacher at Mt. Wolf Elementary School was selected to receive the Teacher Impact Award for 2011. Cathy was selected as the York County recipient along with 4 other teachers from other neighboring counties. These 5 individuals were chosen from the over 250 nominees. Cathy was presented the award at the Teacher Impact Awards Banquet in Hershey on May 16, 2011. Cathy has been a teacher with the LIU preschool program for many years and is a role model and inspiration to all. She was nominated by the present and past parents of her students and many of these families attended the banquet to honor Cathy. Cathy believes that if students don't learn the way we teach then we better teach the way they learn and demonstrates this belief daily through her actions and the differentiated instruction that she provides to her students. The LIU #12 is excited to have an early childhood teacher selected for this prestigious award.
