SUMMERFEST 2
Continued from Summerfest 1
There are a large variety of classes in which vehicles can be entered some 19 different classes, in fact, for this years show. This fun event includes dash plaques for the first 50 entrants in the car show and prizes too. Everybody that attends the car show is eligible to win a door prize, Nate said. And that includes the participants and those that come to view the vehicles. There will be a first-, second- and third-place trophy for each class of vehicle in the show too. And there will be a special Participants Choice Trophy to the one vehicle those entered in the car show feel is the best. But the trophy recipients for each class will be determined by the four car show judges, most of whom will be the same judges as last year, Nate noted. In addition to the beautiful vehicles on display, everything from motorcycles, cars, tractors and trucks to some unusual rat rods and novelty entries, there will be entertainment with music from the 1950s, 60s, 70s and 80s being played. Announcer for the day will be Brent Pavelko. The American Legion Food Stand will be operating out of the North City Park shelter house again this year, serving rolls and coffee in the morning and switching over to things like hot dogs and chips before noon. I think something that will add to the number of those attending this years car show is the moving of both the Girl Scout Pet Show and the craft show to North City Park, Tawn said. I think that was a great idea that should benefit everyone. Having those two events at North City Park, along with the Kids Against Hunger 5K and our car show, should centralize the crowd, Nate said. The people coming will have a variety of things to do, whether it is coming to look the cars over or check out the crafts and catch the pet show or watch the start of the races. They can have something to eat or drink without having to leave the park and enjoy some of their favorite hit songs too. I think my favorite part of our doing this car show is seeing all the people come and talk with the participants about their vehicles, reminiscing with them about the memories those vehicles bring up for people viewing them, Tawn said. I would like to thank everybody for their being generous enough to share their cars with us. It takes a lot of effort on their part to show them off. For me, hearing the appreciation expressed from people coming to look at the cars and from those who entered their vehicles in the car show is rewarding, Nate said. I think my favorite part of it, however, is hearing the people show their appreciation to the participants for the hard work they have gone to in restoring their cars and getting them to the show. North City Park is located in North Lakefield at Seventh Avenue and Douglas Street, just a few blocks north of uptown Lakefield.

At this point, no black powder events will be on for the event, but there will be a Dutch oven cook-off on Saturday at 5 p.m., Post said. We are inviting anyone in the public to enter the Dutch oven cook-off and come sample some of the foods they cook up, Post said. There will be a prize to the winner of the cookoff too. The museum will be open all three days the buck-skinners are here, Kirchmeier said. We will be open Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sunday from 10 a.m. until after the Civil War presentations, which start at 2 p.m. that day. Kirchmeier and Hennan Rost, president of the JCHS board, will give presentations on the Civil War with Rost talking more about the life of the Civil War soldiers and Kirchmeier talking about the involvement Jackson County residents had in the Civil War, starting with the Home Guard established to protect the settlers from Indian uprisings. Hennan will be dressed in one of his Civil War uniforms for his presentation, Kirchmeier said. He was previously involved in many Civil War reenactments and many of the items used for those are on display in our museum for everyone to see. I want to invite the public to come into the museum while visiting the Buffalo Ridge Renegades at the Summerfest Rendezvous event and take a look at all we have on the history of Jackson County. We will be offering free refreshments after the Civil War presentations on Sunday too. Several of the museums period wagons will be rolled out for everyone to see, including a buggy and a buckboard, which will be on display right next to the buckskinners encampments. This is a great opportunity for people to rediscover the Jackson County Historical Society Museum and learn what we do here, Kirchmeier said. We do great things at the museum in an effort to preserve Jackson County History. Many of the displays are new. to move some Summerfest events to North City Park this year so there might be a bigger concentration of people for the events held there, said Leanne Henning, Lakefield Girl Scout leader and coordinator of the Summerfest Girl Scout Pet Show. The Summerfest Classics in the Park Car Show is always held at North City Park and the Kids Against Hunger 5K starts and ends there each year as well. Now, Marcy Costello, coordinator of the Summerfest Craft Show, is moving that show to North City Park and we will be holding our third annual Girl Scout Pet Show there as well. There should be plenty of variety of things for people to see and do with all those choices at one location. It should work out well. The Summerfest Classics in the Park Car Show will occupy the majority of the space in the park, primarily the north half of North City Park from the east to the west. The Kids Against Hunger 5K Walk/Run will be concentrated around the parks gazebo to the east and go south, just to the west of Bethlehem Lutheran Church where both the run and walk will kick off. And the Summerfest Craft Show will set up primarily on the south side of North City Park along Seventh Avenue North by the new playground apparatus. The Summerfest Girl Scout Pet show will have its pet show stage set up more toward the southwest corner of the park Saturday. Registration for the pet show will start at 9:30 a.m. near the stage, Henning said. And the show will start right at 10 a.m. with the kids walking or carrying their pets across the stage for everyone to see, including the judges, who will be mixed within the audience. According to Henning, Lakefield Girl Scout Troop 353 sponsors the pet show as a community service project and a way to give back to the people of Lakefield and the surrounding area. The Lakefield Girl Scout Cadets help organize the pet show the prettiest eyes, top large dog, top medium dog and top small dog and a peoples choice award. This is not a pet show about pedigree, Henning said. It is a chance for kids to show their pet and how well they can handle their pet for some. We hope to have a prize for everyone. The Girl Scouts use some of the money from their cookie sales to pay for the prizes. All pets will be initially entered in one of three categories large, medium or small pet. Beyond registering their pet, knowing its breed or mix of breeds and parading or carrying it across the stage and back, pet show participants need to announce the name of the pet and tell something special about their pet or some fun fact about their animal, Henning said. All pets in the show have to either be on a leash or carried in the hand of their owners. Last year we had our largest pet show, with 23 pets shown, she said. This is our third annual Summerfest Girl Scout Pet Show and every year it has gotten a little bit bigger. We have been fortunate that no pet has gotten too frisky with another pet. It seems for the most part all the pets are friendly with the other pets in the show. And I think this new location will work great with the other events located there as well. It will provide something additional for people to enjoy and should be a lot cooler with the trees. It is getting back to nature where the pets like to be too. The Summerfest Girl Scout Pet Show usually lasts See PETS on SUMMERFEST 4

Community church service to feature Sioux Falls gospel group beginning at 9:30 a.m. this Sunday
by MIKE JORDAN Staff Writer Sioux Falls, S.D.-based gospel music group Relative Harmony will perform at this years Summerfest Community Church Service starting at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 26. The public is invited to join us in this years Summerfest Community Church Service where Pastor Todd Bauman of Worthington will again be sharing his message with those gathered and, prior to his message, the gospel music trio of Relative Harmony will be singing, starting at 9:30 a.m., said Monica Kuhnau, service coordinator. The earlier-than-normal start time for the service is due to another commitment to perform by Relative Harmony that day and will allow the trio additional travel time to make their next performance. Relative Harmony has been traveling the Midwest for nearly five years, singing primarily southern gospel music. The group includes Jake and Phyllis Van Den Hul and Phyllis cousin, Carol Patch, as well as her granddaughter, Taylor Patch, who does the sound mixing for the group. Jake and Phyllis have been singing not only together, but also with a variety of groups since 1966. Both Jake and Phyllis enjoy riding their trike during the summer months and Carol and her husband, Ray, like riding their big Kawasaki motorcycle together. Kuhnau said obviously, this group and their interest in motorcycles and riding fits right in with the theme of this years 2011 Summerfest celebration, Lakefield Gone Hog Wild, which should add to the fun of performing here this year. At the end of the service, the Windom Area Chordhustlers will also be performing as part of their traditional day of traveling around the area, performing briefly at various churches, Kuhnau said. This should make for a special Summerfest Community Church Service this year with a lot of great music.
