"Culture used to be so simple. Culture use to mean art, literature, and

ideas. And not just any old art, literature, and ideas. Culture was High Art, Great Literature, and Big Ideas. And more particularly, our High Art, Great Literature, and Big Ideas."

"Culture is a collection of beliefs, values and ways of doing things which

are typical of a particular community and which are expressed and perpetuated through various codes"

How do we define culture?


Culture is a way of life of a group of people.

Some of the basics in Culture are:

Behavior Belief Values Symbols that people accept as their on. All of them are passed along from generation to generation. It also refers to knowledge, folklore, language, rules, rituals, habits, lifestyle, attitudes, customs .

What is Communication?
Communication is commonly defined as "the imparting or

interchange of thoughts, opinions, or information by speech, writing, or signs".

In order for culture to exits we need to have a way to

communicate or to relate to each other.


Signs, music, language, art, sounds, pictures, etc. Each country, region or race has this basic elements.

High Culture and Popular Culture?


Popular culture would include most forms of mass

communication or commercial forms of art such as:


pop and rock music, TV soap operas, romance stories, blockbuster films, tabloid newspapers etc. classical music , documentary, serious novels, avant-garde or experimental films, broadsheet newspapers, great art such as Van Gogh, Rembrandt etc

High culture would include:

As a big business (or the ruling classes) Making money out of society s and keeping us happy or In the case of feminists, exploiting us for money.

High culture
Is seen as pure art, an expression of individual but universal ideas being

communicated to other individuals who appreciate and interpret these pieces of art - stories, paintings, films - in their own, unique way. High culture can also be a force for oppression because it is held up as the model all cultural artifacts and art should aspire to.

We acquire our identity through socialisation Socialisation is the process by which we, as individuals, become

members of our society or culture. We are active participants in this process we decide what to accept or reject
Parents choose your name, give you your first beliefs, tastes etc School learn rules, how to socialise and fit in with others Church religion passes on values Peers in teen years people in your age group have most influence
