Shutter Light Group Southern Arts Societys camera club was founded by Ray
Clemmer in October 2008. We provide educational programs and exhibits for the
beginner all the way to professional, with speakers and seminars on techniques
offeredthroughouttheyear.
Wemeetthe3rdTuesdayofeachmonth.Eachmonthmembersaregivenanassignmentto
photographinordertoincreasetheirfamiliaritywiththeirequipmentandsubjectmatter.Drop

SouthernArtsSociety,Inc.(SASI)isanonprofitartorganizationfoundedin1984
by A.B. Mauney Snow and local artists. Our mission is to promote the arts by
training the artist, and educating the public to the many talents available in the
community. We provide visual art displays in the community; scholarships for
localstudentsandworkshopsopentoall.Wemeetthe1stTuesdayeachmonth.Thereisabrief
businessmeetingfollowedbyanartisticprogram.

SASI membership also includes the Shutter Light Group photography club. Meetings
forSouthernArtsSocietyandShutterLightGroupareheldattheKingsMountainArtCenter
(theoldDepot).TherearenoclubmeetingsinJulyandDecember.

JudgedPhotographyCompetitionandExhibit
THEME: Summer in the City. All entries should reflect the theme.
ELIGIBILITY: Persons eighteen years and older are eligible. Work must be original, completed within
the last three (3) years. Eligible entries may be traditional or digital photography; mixed media will not be
considered. All images, Black & White, Color or Digital Images will be grouped and judged equally. All
work must remain for the duration of the exhibit. This is a judged exhibit. Entry forms must be complete
in order to be accepted. All entries will be accepted at the discretion of Southern Arts Society (SASI).
FEE: (non-refundable) $25 members, $30 non-members, for three entries.
Additional entries $5 each for members, $10 each for non-members (max. 5 entries total)
SALES and PRICING: SASi will retain 30% Commission from all sales by Members, and 40% from all
sales by Non-members. No PORs (price on request).
SPECIFICATIONS: Minimum frame size is 10x10 with an image size of 8x8. Maximum frame size is
30x40. Photography on paper must be protected by glass or Plexiglas. All work must be properly framed
or printed on gallery wrapped canvas and securely wired for hanging. The following will NOT be
accepted: clip frames, saw-tooth hangers, non-glare glass, staples or tape. Images unsuitable for
hanging will not be considered.
Presentation is taken into consideration please take care in formatting work (framing, matting,
etc.) in a professional manner. Please refrain from prominent signatures on work. Mats should be neat
and clean (no signatures or titles on the mat).
PICK UP OF ART: Artwork left beyond 30 days will become property of SASI.
LIABILITY: The ARTISTS insurance must cover their work while on premises. SASI reserves the right
to decline any works or to withdraw any work from the exhibition at its discretion. SASI reserves the
right to photograph and reproduce any entry submitted for educational, marketing and publicity purposes
only. Entry into the exhibition constitutes an agreement by the artist with all conditions set forth in this
prospectus.
JUDGE: Dennis Kiel has been Chief Curator at The Light Factory Contemporary Museum of Photography
and Film since 2007. He has curated numerous exhibitions including Group f.64: Photographs by Ansel
Adams, Edward Weston, Imogen Cunningham, Willard Van Dyke, and Brett Weston, The Romance of the
Road, Suspicious Minds: Surrealism in the 21st Century, Bring the Family, and Body & Soul. Kiel also
served as a member of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) panel titled American Masterpieces:
Visual Arts Touring (2009) and has participated in portfolio reviews at Houston Fotofest (2008 and
2010), Our World for Photo Alliance, San Francisco (2008-2010), and Photolucida, Portland, OR (2011).
Before joining The Light Factory, Kiel served as the Associate Curator of Prints, Drawings, and
Photographs at the Cincinnati Art Museum for 24 years. For five years, he also taught a class in the
history of photography at Northern Kentucky University, Highland Heights, Kentucky.
Kiel received a BFA in Graphic Design from Ohio University and an MA in Art History from the
University of Cincinnati. He also studied the history of photography at Pennsylvania State Univ.
