Public: KU Student Ambassadors and Orientation Assistants Description of public: These are students who educate prospective and future students about the University of Kansas. Student Ambassadors are volunteers who must apply for the position. They work under four different titles, each with a specific duty: ambassador coordinators, promotions and recruitment officers, training officers, and development and evaluation officers. There are currently 16 student ambassadors and one student ambassador supervisor, Chris Woolery. Orientation assistants help students during their orientation process, typically the summer before their first year on-campus. The position of orientation assistant is also voluntary, and must be applied for. There are 20 orientation assistants at KU. Both student ambassadors and orientation assistants are put through extensive training processes. Decision maker: The ambassador supervisor, Chris Woolery Desired action: The desired action for this public is to pass along the information that they learn about KU Libraries to prospective and incoming students. This public has access to this key group of students from the very beginning of their experience at KU. The more knowledge this public has about KU Libraries, the more they can help educate prospective and incoming students. This way, new students will know about the resources available through KU Libraries from the moment they step on campus. Having this knowledge will make them more likely to make use of KU Libraries, which will help build the KU Libraries relationship with KU undergrads. Objective: Public mentions relevant information about KU Libraries at least three times during meetings with students. Meetings include campus tours, orientation sessions, and one-on-one meetings. Tactics Tactic #1: PowerPoint presentation with information about the KU Libraries Brief description: Design a PowerPoint presentation to be given to this public during their initial training programs. The PowerPoint presentation should include information about the libraries that would be helpful for KU undergraduate students, especially during their freshman or sophomore year. Key message: KU Libraries have resources that can help students during their undergraduate education at KU. Since this target public works directly with students, increasing their knowledge of resources available through the

KU Libraries will, in turn, allow them to educate others about the KU Libraries. Implementation requirements: Technology to present PowerPoint and space to give presentations. Knowledgeable presenters are also needed. Estimated cost: None Special considerations: PowerPoint will need to be updated as changes occur at KU Libraries. Timeliness of information is essential. Timeline: Begins during the first orientation session of Summer 2010 Evaluation measure: Increasing awareness of different resources available to students Tactic #2: An online, interactive quiz with questions about the KU Libraries Brief description: Create a quiz filled with questions concerning KU Libraries and post this to the KU Student Ambassadors Facebook group. They should be made available to KU orientation assistants through email. The questions should range from basic information that would be helpful for undergrads to know, to random, trivial facts that could help generate interest about the libraries. These short quizzes should be updated on a monthly basis. Each participant would get a number of points for correct answers, and high scorers at the end of each month would receive a small incentive, like coupons to a local business. Key message: One can benefit by learning more about KU Libraries. This tactic would increase awareness of interesting and useful facts concerning the libraries, as well as, keep students interacting and engaged with what is going on with the libraries. Implementation requirements: Someone to gather facts/information for quiz and put it together each month. Someone who is knowledgeable of social media. Estimated cost: Nonecoupons are donated by local businesses Special considerations: Finding an individual to create quizzes Timetable: Begins during first undergraduate orientation session of the summer of 2010 Evaluation measure: View number of responses to measure number of quiz-takers and respondents

Tactic #3: A meeting between KU subject librarians and the target public Brief description: Organize meetings in which subject librarians speak to this public in small-group settings during the training period of the public. The public should be split into groups according to their major and areas of interest. The subject librarian will give information on how library resources can be used on an individual level. Key message: Get to know the people behind KU Libraries. By allowing the librarians to speak to students in a small-group setting, students can become familiar with the librarian on a personal level. This will hopefully make them more comfortable with someone at the library. The targeted public will hopefully then talk to prospective and incoming students about the actual people behind KU Libraries with more confidence, because they know someone there personally. This adds a humanistic element to KU Libraries. Implementation requirements: A space to hold meetings Cost: None besides time given by KU Librarians Special considerations: Librarians willingness to give time to this public Timetable: To begin during the first session of the Summer 2010 orientation Evaluation measure: Increased mentioning of KU librarians by name by the target public during their interactions with incoming and prospective students Personal contribution: For this project, I researched the roles of KU student ambassadors and orientation assistants. From this information, I learned that they are an essential bridge between KU Libraries and KU undergraduates so I chose them as a target public. I then developed three tactics that would give this target public more information about KU Libraries that they can use to educate other students.
