PHYSICS GRADUATE PROGRAMS TRAIN STUDENTS FOR INDUSTRIAL CAREERS.

Physics Graduate Programs Train Students for industrial Careers. It is one of the title of an article taken from a journal, Physics Today(August 2000) written by Tony Feder. The title of the article was clear and appropriate with what the author want to deliver to the readers in his writing. The main point in this article is that he wants to promote about a program that prepare physics students specifically for careers in industry. So, the title seems like very suitable and fit to the contents in the article. The author also did use the question mark phrases at the beginning of his writing. For example, Need more Physics graduate students?, Cant pay for the one who comes knocking?, want to be sure theyll land good jobs when they complete their degrees?. All these things are good in order to attract readers to keep going in reading the article till the end. The uses of question mark phrases as the introduction also could tell readers the initial overview about what the article is all about. So, I can see clearly the purpose of this article where the author want to promote some programs that will produce graduates with solid physics background as well as industrial experience was made clearly in the introduction. In his article, he was clearly mentioned about the programs related to the topic that he already mentioned in his introduction. The programs that he mentioned is the Advanced Instrumentations and Measurements (AIM) that was started up at Swedens Uppsala University and in works at Washingtons DCs Georgetown University. After he tell the readers the name of the programs, he go through the objectives or ideas of this program which for me that is very important so that the readers can get an initial frame of view and get some ideas about the program. The author state that the idea of this program is to produce graduate physics students with industrial background as well as industrial experiences. In my opinion, the author has produced a very attractive article especially for the persons that are in science field. I said this because the author mentioned a lot about the advantages of this program. For instants, he did states about the funding that the program earn, the matters that participants learn which are relevant to working in industry,

scholarship, and so on. For me, this article not only will attract those who are in science field, but it also will attract everyone that involved in industry field. He tried to tell the readers about win-win situation that occur in this program by interviewing some students and some persons for behalf of their companies. One of the student that follow this program said that he get the same research training and theoretical skills like a traditional program would provide, but the the extra bonus that he get through AIM is that he get some insight into how research is being done in a larger company and he can create contacts for possible future employment. For the companies part, getting involved with AIM will help out their R&D and it is an advantage for them to know about equipment and people. The results of his interview also make the readers realize that the program like this will help get all the good ideas out of the university and into applications. He also did give credits to certain companies that get involved with AIM in certain courses. All of the discussions, ideas and facts in this article are relevant because most of the phrases in this article are based on the interview and the answer and facts come out from the related person itself. For example, the author do get the information directly from the AIM director, AIM students, Department Chair of Georgetown University and the person that involved in those related programs. So, I feel that all the facts or ideas in this article is reliable and the author been objective in his discussion of the topic. The same thing goes through when the author explained about the related program in Georgetown University which is plans to start an industry oriented physics graduate programs. The author uses the same approach in his writing which is he wrote all about the advantages and still use the idea from the person that he interviewed. After I read the whole article, I feel that the writer shows a little biased in delivering his writing because he did not state the disadvantages of the programs. It is good for him to tell the readers a lot about the advantages of the programs, but the readers also should know the weaknesses. It is impossible if such big program like those mentioned above do not have any weakness. As a conclusion, this article has it pros and contras.
