Course Description
The course is designed to introduce the students to the principles and practice of public speaking with particular emphasis on the content, organization, language, delivery and critical evaluation of the message being communicated.

Course Objectives
1. To make the students aware of the physiology of speech production. 2. To give them practice in the recognition and production of English vowels and consonants, word accent, accent in connected speech, and intonation. 3. To make them aware of the importance of non-verbal communication. 4. To develop in them analytical and critical skills, leading them to organize presentations optimally. 5. To make them aware of the basic processes and current theories of human communication so that by reference to them they may evaluate and improve upon their own skills and abilities as public speakers.

Teaching
The course will start with lectures, talking about the basic processes and theories of human communication and recommending relevant readings on the subject. The students will then be taken through the following kinds (or methods) of presentation: a. b. c. d. Impromptu Speaking Memorized Text Presentation Reading from a Manuscript Extemporaneous Speaking

The final aim will be to enable them to read from a manuscript efficiently and make effective extemporaneous presentations.

In order to enable them to make their presentations persuasive and effective, they will be taught to use their voice to advantage by helping them to control their pitch, rate of delivery, accent and loudness. Evaluation and Grading Policy: Final grade will be based on a raw numerical score obtained by weighting grades on the following assessment criterion: Mid Term Exam Final Exam Quizzes / Class Tests Assignment 20% 30% 40% 10% 100% The quizzes (normally for 20 minutes) / class tests (normally for 40 minutes) will be given at least once in a fortnight. No make-up Quizzes / Class Tests will be conducted for missed Quizzes / Class Tests. The assignments will be given on a weekly basis. The assignments will be submitted before the mid-term and the final exam and the viva will be held to award the assignment marks.
