FUNDRAISER: The Montcalm CASA annual playhouse fundraiser for 2011 is underway. Pictured is this
years playhouse a hand-built wooden fre truck constructed by the Building Trades Program at Carson City
Regional Correctional Facility with Montcalm CASA Program Coordinator Kristi Jeffreys daughter, Lauren.
Montcalm CASA announces
annual playhouse fundraiser
STANTON Each summer for the
past seven years, the entire community
has looked forward to the unveiling of
the Montcalm Court Appointed Special
Advocates (CASA) playhouse, hand-
built by the Building Trades Program
crew at Carson City Regional Correc-
tional Facility specifcally for this spe-
cial annual fundraiser.
Since 2006, weve enjoyed the
amazing gift that the Building Trades
Program has given us with an amazing
playhouse every year, said Kristi Jef-
frey, Montcalm CASA Program Coordi-
nator. Theyve built us such a unique
variety of great playhouses to raffe off to
the community to raise funds for CASA
from simple, elegant play structures
to an attention-getting pirate ship. One
year, they even built a playhouse that
looked like a train, with a caboose and
everything, which the winner donated
to Lakeside Village Park in Lakeview.
This year, the playhouse is a show-
stopper a highly detailed playhouse in
the form of a real fre truck, completely
made of wood, including the wheels,
the fre hose, and the ladders.
This is so great for CASA because
the Building Trades Program donates
so much for this program the tools,
the labor, the fantastic craftsmanship,
and the amazing blueprints that the de-
signs are based on which allows us to
have this truly unique fundraiser each
year, said Jeffrey. And we truly appre-
ciate the lumber donated for the project
by Carson City Lumber, the Grande du
Michigan La Societe de 40 Hommes et
8 Chevaux, the Sheridan VFW, and the
American Legion in Carson City.
Montcalm CASA provides volunteer
advocates to speak on behalf of abused
and neglected children in the foster
care system in Montcalm County. The
program works with an average of 35
children each year whove been identi-
fed by the court system as needing ad-
vocacy for what is in their best interest
in what can often be very diffcult situ-
ations.
This year is a particularly special
year for this playhouse raffe because
the Building Trades Program at Car-
son City Regional Correctional Facil-
ity has been discontinued due to state
budget cuts, said Jeffrey. Were very
saddened by the loss of this partnership
that helped so many children in our
n Hand-built fire truck will raise funds for
local children in need

The ftness test activities are:
nCurl-Ups
nShuttle Run
nOne Mile Run
nPull-Ups
nV-Sit Reach
The standard for the fve test items are based on data
from the 1985 School Population Fitness Survey con-
ducted for the Presidents Council of Physical Fitness and
Sports by the University of Michigan Institute for Social
Research. Percentiles are assigned to each test activity
that allows individuals to understand where they mea-
sure up in terms of their physical ftness as compared to
others in their own age group. The higher percentile a
student falls into, the more physically ft the student is.
Scores for each test that place the student into the
0-45 percent ranking indicate he or she is below or well-
below average in ftness. Scores which place students in
a 50-65 percentile indicate that he or she is above av-
erage in their ftness level. Scores which place students
within a 70-80 percentile indicate the student is above
average in their ftness level. Scores of students in the
95-100 percentiles indicate the student has exceptional
physical ftness. The Presidential Fitness Award is pre-
sented to all students who achieve an 85th percentile or
greater. More information on the program and award
can be found by visiting www.presidentschallenge.org.
The Presidential Physical Fitness Test lets students
know where they are at in terms of their ftness level.
It also allows them compare their scores to the 85th
percentile averages and determine their strengths and
weaknesses. Many students are surprised to learn that
their scores fall below average expectations. With that
information, students are then encouraged to partici-
pate in regular physical activity to help increase their
levels of ftness.
Throughout the year, we work hard on improving
speed, agility, fexibility, strength, and cardiovascular
endurance. The students who work hard daily, truly ac-
complish much higher scores and improve their level
of ftness, said Anne Martin, Lakeview Middle School
Physical Education Instructor. My hope for students in
Lakeview is to offer them more Physical Education time
which in turn would elicit improved ftness levels. I am a
fond believer that a healthy body creates a healthy mind,
and students would also see a signifcant improvement
in academic achievement. Good health allows quality of
life!

Most pet owners love their
animals so much they want
to take them everywhere, and
summer is a great time to frol-
ic together in the backyard or
to hit the road for a fun vaca-
tion.
However, even the healthi-
est pets can suffer from sun-
burn, dehydration or heat
stroke if you arent careful, say
the experts at The American
Society for the Prevention of
Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).
Here are several ways you
can help keep your pet safe
and healthy during the dog (and
cat) days of summer:
n Visit the Vet. A visit to the
veterinarian for an early season
check-up is a must. Make sure
your pet is up-to-date on all nec-
essary vaccinations. Pets should
also be given a blood test for
heartworm a deadly parasite
that is transmitted through the
bite of an infected mosquito. Its
also recommended that dogs and
cats be on a monthly preven-
tive medication year-round.
n Keep Cool. Dogs and cats
can become dehydrated quickly,
so give your pets plenty of wa-
ter when it is hot outdoors.
Also make sure your pet has
a shady place to escape the
sun, and when the temper-
ature is very high, dont
let your dog linger on
hot asphalt. Be-
ing so close the
ground,
your dogs body can heat up quickly,
and sensitive paw pads can burn. And
never, ever leave your animal alone in
a parked vehicle, even with
t h e windows open,
since potentially
fatal heatstroke
can develop.
n Know the
Symptoms. Ac-
cording to the
ASPCA the symp-
toms of overheat-
ing in pets include
excessive panting
or difficulty breath-
ing, increased heart
and respiratory rate,
drooling, mild weak-
ness, seizures, and an
elevated body tempera-
ture of over 104 degrees.
And animals with flat faces,
like pugs and Persian cats, are
more susceptible to heat stroke
since they cannot pant as effec-
tively. These pets, along with
the elderly, the overweight, and
those with heart or lung dis-
eases, should be kept cool in air-
conditioned rooms as much as
possible.
n Just Say No. Summertime is
the perfect time for a backyard bar-
beque or party, but remember that
the food and drink you serve your
guests may be poisonous to pets.
Keep alcoholic beverages away from
pets and avoid human snacks
especially raisins, grapes, onions,
chocolate and products with the
sweetener xylitol.
n Pest-Free Pets. Common-
ly-used flea and tick products, roden-
ticides (mouse and rat baits), insecti-
cides, and herbicide lawn products can
be harmful to cats and dogs if ingested,
so keep them out of reach. While there
are flea products that can be used safe-
ly on dogs, these same products can be
deadly to cats, because of the presence
of the chemical permethrin. Be sure to
read directions on these products care-
fully. When walking your dog, steer
clear of areas that you suspect have
been sprayed with insecticides or her-
bicide lawn products. Keep citronella
candles, oil products and insect coils
out of pets reach as well.
n Water Safety. Do not leave pets
unsupervised around a pool, as not
all dogs are good swimmers. Intro-
duce your pets to water gradually and
make sure pets wear flotation devices
while on boats. Rinse your dog off after
swimming to remove chlorine or salt
from his fur, and try to keep your dog
from drinking pool water, which con-
tains chlorine and other chemicals that
could cause stomach upset.
n No Fireworks for Fido. Leave pets
at home when you head out for fire-
works celebrations, and never use fire-
works around pets at home.
And be sure to keep all unscreened
windows or doors in your home closed
and make sure adjustable screens are
tightly secured. This helps prevent pets
from falling out of them.
If your dog or cat accidentally in-
gests a potentially toxic substance
this summer, contact your local vet-
erinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison
Control Center at (888) 426-4435 for
immediate assistance. For more infor-
mation on having a fun, safe summer
with your pet, visit www.aspca.org.

Your job gets done, and very
well, youd add. Youre pretty
sure that youre the best person
doing your job, in fact, prob-
ably no-one else in your de-
partment could do your job as
well as you do. So whats the
hold-up? Why is everyone get-
ting promoted but you?
No pucks need apply.
Businesses will be only as good
as the combined successes of
their employees. Very success-
ful companies have extraordi-
nary employee teams. Teams
are highly efcient, members
are dependent on each other.
No member acts superior to
others. Everyone does more
than what is asked. Teammates
refuse to take individual credit,
instead insisting that their suc-
cess is a joint effort. Partly its
the self-fullling prophecy. If
you tell someone that theyre
such-and-such, whether thats
good or bad, then that such-
and-such is more likely to
become true. So if you give
your teammates the credit,
you increase the likelihood
they will actually step up and
perform better next time, to be
more creditworthy. If you can
get them to happily perform
better, you give your team the
winning edge.
If you havent been promot-
ed, it could be because you
havent shown how to be part
of a team. It could be youve
been acting like the puck, free-
wheeling, independent, and
overcondent. From your rst
day on the job your employer
has been looking at your ability
to play the team game. Could
you be the next goalie? Goal-
ies take teams to the playoffs.
Being a team player.
Knowing a lot is good. But dont
pat yourself on the back. Share
the credit, no matter how little
someone else contributed. Ex-
pressing your opinion is good.
But practice a positive attitude.
Give a positive way to x that
problem, dont just point it out.
If making coffee isnt your job,
make the coffee. Volunteer to
help someone for no extra pay.
Support your team members.
Dont call in sick (unless you
are really sick). That puts a
strain on workers who pick up
your slack. Get to work early
every day. Maybe a night shift
guy can go home a little ear-
lier then very considerate of
you. Be unbiased. Make no
judgments about others. Dont
listen to rumors and OMG!
dont spread them. Give ev-
eryone the benet of the doubt
and dont take sides. Treat
your mates equally. No favor-
ites. And smile a lot!
Game Rules Change.
When a game plan, a company
policy, the way things have
always been done, changes,
dont complain. Give it your
best try. After a couple of
weeks, make a suggestion to
improve it. One. Respect your
co-workers even when you
cant believe theyre right
believe that theyre trying their
best. Represent your company
with dignity. Be its biggest fan.
Be the goalie. And always re-
member that if you think you
cant be replaced, you can, and
will be.

Homeopathic First Aid Remedies for the Summer.
Many homeopathic remedies are made from herbs and plants. The dried plant is soaked in pure alcohol for a period of time
and the resulting brew is called a tincture. To make homeopathic remedies, the tincture is then diluted and succussed (shaken)
at least 16 times with each dilution. If you look at a homeopathic remedy you will see strengths, for example, 12X or 6C after
the remedy name. X dilutions are decimal (1 to 10) and C dilutions are centesimal (1 to 100). The number tells you how many
times the dilutions have been done. The higher the number, the more dilutions, the stronger it is. I know this does not make
much sense, but in homeopathy we are looking at the energy signature of the remedy, not the physical substance from which
the remedy is made.
Arnica Montana is a homeopathic remedy for sprains and strains. Most of the time you will use a 30X (diluted 1 to 10, thirty
times) or a 30C (diluted 1 to 100, thirty times). This remedy is magic for any sprain or strain. This should be taken under the
tongue every 30 minutes after the sprain, up to 8 or 10 times per day for an acute injury. If the injury is a few days old use it
3-4 times per day. Recovery is amazing.
Another great remedy for any household is Apis 30X or 30C. This made from ground up honey bees. You guessed it, this
works fantastic for Bee stings. It is best to give every 5 to 15 minutes until the sting pain and swelling begin to subside. We
have seen some great results with Apis on fresh and older stings with local allergic reactions. If you have severe allergic bee
sting reactions, get Apis 200C and an Epi-Pen. Keep them on hand and available. Immediately after a sting, take the Apis and
head for the nearest ER, repeating the Apis 200C every 5-15 minutes. Use the Epi-Pen only if you have trouble breathing or
swallowing. If you use an Epi-pen, you must follow-up in the ER.
Another excellent summer remedy is Cantharis. This is for sun burn and other thermal burns. The essential oil, Lavender and
whole leaf, Alovera juice can be applied topically and are also excellent for treating burns.
For the Weekend Warriors with tendon strains, tendonitis, and carpel tunnel syndrome, the remedy
Ruta Graveolans 30C, taken 2 3 times per day has been very helpful.
Bug Bites can be a big problem, especially for the little tykes. We use Ledum 30C, one pellet before
going out or one pellet 2-3 times per day after bitten. It is also good for healing any puncture wound.
(Remember bites are punctures).
So enjoy a safe Spring and Summer, but if you do have some mishap, it is good to be prepared.
We suggest a general remedy kit. Here is an example of why: Last summer we were on vacation. My
cell phone rings, on the line is a frantic grandmother, watching her grand-daughter in a fever seizure.
I knew she had a remedy kit. I asked if she had Homeopathic Belladonna. Yes, she did! The quick
dissolving tablet was place inside the childs cheek. In less than 30 seconds the seizure stopped, in 15
minutes the fever was done and the kid was up, playing in less than an hour. Preparation and some
education about these remedies is a great thing.

AM? FM? HD? Satellite? CD? MP3?
Your customers have lots of choices when deciding
what to listen to. When you need to reach those
customers you could choose radio. But should you
choose AM, FM, HD, or Satellite? Ten which format
should you choose: Adult Contemporary, Smooth
Jazz, Rock, Hip Hop, Country, Classical, News, Talk,
Urban, Oldies, Latin, Religious, or Sports? Once
youve chosen the medium and the format youll
need to select the right stations. How many stations
do you listen to? Do your customers listen to the
same ones? Do you need a 30 or 60 second spot?
Finally, which daypart should you advertise on:
morning drive, mid-day, afternoon drive, evening, or
overnight?
If this all seems a bit complicated there is an
alternative. Your free community paper reaches the
most households in our area and ofers two simple
options: size and color. You choose the size and color
options that work for your budget. Its that simple.
Call us today to discuss those two options with a
professional advertising consultant. Well handle
everything. Ten you can sit back and listen to your
iPod without any distractions.

These three brothers were
released by their own-

homes. They all enjoy
chasing little movement
whether it is a dust bunny

the oor. They are very re-
laxed little guys who dont
seem to mind much of
anything. They are about
12 weeks old and ready
for homes as of 6/15/11
after they have been neu-
tered and made current
on their vaccinations.
Go to www.petnder.com/shelters/montcalm.html
