Statement on Credential Challenge on the Burmese Regime in the UNGA

September 11 2008

We, the 88' generation students in exile welcome the move made by Members of Parliament
Union (MPU) who challenged the credentials of the military regime in Burma. The regime
ignored the results of the election of 1990 won by opposition political party National League for
Democracy (NLD) led by 1991 Nobel Peace Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi. She narrowly escaped
an attempted assassination on May 30, 2003, organized by the regime itself who put her under
house arrest after she luckily escaped from being murdered.

The MPU is formed by elected representatives from the 1990 elections. The regime never
allowed calling for the parliament to convene but started to arrest to those who are outspoken
against their illegal actions. Many MPs were forced to resign or put into prisons. The Credential
Challenge is the most needed action against the regime that we all are hoping for.

The United Nations have been issuing many concerned statements about human rights violations
in Burma since the regime took over political power in 1988. The UN effort for democratic
change in Burma never materializes to the present. All the UN special Envoys never reach their
goals for national reconciliation and transition to democracy.

The regime successfully used the UN representatives as their tools to buy time by promising for
change and to start a dialogue with the 1990's rightfully victorious party, the NLD, but it never
occurred. On the other hand, the regime abolished most of the NLD offices around the country
and captured many active NLD members through the political organization called the Union of
Solidarity and Development Association (USDA).

The Burmese military junta has no legitimacy, no accountability, and no dignity at all. The
killings of 10,000 unarmed demonstrators in 1988 uprising, assassination attempt of Aung San
Suu Kyi in 2003 which killed more than fifty people, the saffron revolution in 2007, and cyclone
Nergis in 2008 proved that the regime has no good will for its own people. The world recognized
its madness to cling on power and its carelessness for its country's entire population.

We believe it is time for all Burmese patriotic organizations and individuals to stand on the 1990
election results and support the move made by MPU. We will never be recognized in the one
sided election in 2010. We want the UN to recognize and respect the 1990 election results and to
remind Mr. Gambari to stay on the right course not to favor the one-sided election that will take
place in 2010.

We believe it is time for the elected representatives to lawfully take a seat in the UN and speak
out for the Burmese people who trusted and voted for them. They have the right to take a stand
for the entire nation as true representatives.

We want to see the UN as “the true light for the world” which defends for the innocent from the
bullies, who feeds the poor, who saves the sick, and who stands for justice.
