Dolce and Gabbana Running the Tax Gauntlet The tax probe into Dolce and Gabbana has concluded and formal charges may yet be brought against them under Italian law. It is alleged that the brand passed sales royalties through a Luxembourg based company, Gado Sarl, to avoid paying high rate Italian taxes. No criminal charges have been brought against them yet.

Perths Tall Poppy...

PERTH
Words by Deb Olds Photos by Penny Lane

Poppy Lissiman recently showed at the Perth Fashion Festival, including being on fashions biggest international channel: FTV. Its no wonder: her designs are both whimsical and stylised, perfectly West Australian tastes. But Poppy has a bigger ambition than to be on FTV: she wants to make it in Japan.
How did you start your label? I started the label in November 2008 after dropping out of fashion design at university. I felt like I was going over things I already knew so I began working full-time, saving money and planning the start of my own label. My mother taught me to sew when I was 10 years old, so I always sewed my own clothes when I couldnt find what I wanted in shops. My mother continues to help me with my label as she has a strong background in fashion. What inspires you? Im inspired mainly by fabrics and most designs come to me as soon as I see a fabric that I want to work with. Once I have picked a colour palette and a general theme for each collection, I go from there. I am also inspired by my friends and what they would want to wear, as well as individual women in fashion. I am obsessed with Anna Dello Russo (Vogue Nippon Editor) and Daphne Guinness: their style is extreme but so confident and individual. They dont dress to impress men or other women, I dont think; they dress purely for themselves and because they just truly love fashion. What labels do you love/ admire? My favourite designers/labels are Alexander Wang, Miuccia Prada, Christopher Kane, Proenza Schouler, Rodarte, Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton, Dries Van Noten, Givenchy, Yves Saint Laurent, Balenciaga, Albert Elbaz for Lanvin... I could go on forever! I love fashion more than anything, I constantly read magazines, blogs and save whatever money I can for shoes and bags! I have worked for the same shoe store for almost 5 years, so I own a lot of shoes, but Im mostly obsessed with handbags. I buy 3 or 4 luxury bags a year. Ive always

made my own clothes so I tend to spend most of my money on accessories. Whats your interest in Japan? Ever since I was a teenager I have been obsessed with Japan. I still havent been there but my parents lived there briefly before I was born (I was conceived in Japan which is probably why I am so obsessed!) I learnt Japanese in high school and used to watch and read copious amounts of manga and anime. I travel to Asia regularly and always buy Vogue Nippon when I do. It has always been a firm goal of mine to expand my label into Japan because I have always felt (and been told by others) I have a slightly Asian influence in my designs. I love the way fashion is expressed in Japan, and theres a no holds barred approach to wearing clothes as opposed to the relaxed nature of fashion in Australia. En-Vies audience will be the judge....

Celebrates 10 years

Twenty Seven Names New Zealand Fashion Week turned on its busiest event for its 10th year running. The weather stormed outside for most of the week and so the designs followed a somewhat stormy, yet powerful appearance inside. At a glance, this years shows threw up a lot of whats been in vogue down under for a while- minimalist, monochromic tones to support a studious, industrialised older world look. There were plenty of colour cameos and innovative surprises to punctuate the week too with Andrea Moores welcome bursts of pink and purple patterns and Huffer provoking us with scandalous yet chic cuts. loving the soft, draped dresses and of course maxi dresses, amazing with jandals. And heels with socks, loving that!!! Whats lighting up your life away from fashion? Ooh, thats an easy question, my 3 month old daughter Indiana Myla. She is the most amazing and special thing I have ever created. And my husband of course, family is so important. You can be having the worst day ever and you get a big giggle from your baby and your heart just melts, thats what life is all about.

With New Zealand Fashion Week having recently celebrated its 10th year, I was lucky enough to speak with one of its most celebrated debutants, designer Kelly Coe of Augustine International.
Your latest collection delivered bold pieces featuring tunics, full length jackets and off-the-shoulder grecian dresses. What did you want to say with this collection? Woman look amazing in colour and that is what Augustine is about. We do a lot of tunics as they can be interpreted in many different ways. Coats are always a great staple for us in winter and again we do them in bright colours that pop out on a winters day. Shoulder dresses are very flattering and with a soft floaty fabric it doesnt catch on the parts of the body that woman dont like to show off! Your designs have been in high demand over the past few years in New Zealand and Australia. Whats the secret behind Augustine Internationals success? I think Augustine is what woman have been looking for for a long time. Its special occasion wear and luxe daywear that is wearable and accessible at a price point under or around $300 AUD. Have you always wanted to design clothes or did your interest develop later? It was in my teenage years that I discovered my obsession with fashion. I had a terrible shopping addiction. My addiction was only overcome when I started my own label and now I have 1 of everything in my wardrobe. Is there a type of personality that puts on your label before stepping out the door? I guess there is a certain type of personality. Augustine wearers are confident and outgoing woman that like to feel beautiful and well presented. With all the bold colours and bling you cant be a wall flower. What one piece of advice would you give a designer starting out in the fashion industry? Work for someone else first. And once you do start your own label, design what you love and would wear yourself. My best selling pieces are dresses I wear over and over myself. What looks are irking you right now? What looks are you digging right now? I hate the short crop tops that are in right now. I know they are very now and very in but I am not digging them at all. On the other hand I am

Growing Jewellery
Icelandic Moss Rings by HAF
When Icelandic product designer, Hafsteinn Jlusson, goes to work, he doesnt have to fight his way through a crowded train like most of us. His mind isnt racing between nagging projects. Hes not grinding out a hectic week so he can lose himself at the end of it. Hes creating jewellery, Growing Jewellery to be precise.
So whats in his mind when hes designing the silver mould for each jewel? Perhaps hes inspired by a less is more philosophy and an understanding that complicated beings like ourselves are often soothed by simplicity. Perhaps at the moment he finishes adding a piece of earth in each tiny flower pot and carefully places micro moss gardens on top, he imagines himself sitting alone in a Japanese moss garden. Such a scene allures us with its subtle shades of green, accented here and there with a rock, a bamboo fountain or an occasional small flowering shrub. Because thats the place he takes us to with his unique jewellery.

When we pick up these delicately crafted pieces of jewellery, we might not understand moss gardens in all their ecological and physiological glory, but we feel relaxed and lost in contemplation when we look at them.
Many of us dont have the time or commitment to diligently tend to gardens, much like our relationships. But watering a growing jewellery once every 5 weeks could be a fresh start. We might be impatient, fickle and lustful in life but we also understand that passion and commitment can reward us with a meaningful and sustainable relationship. Having said all that, eco-friendly jewellery might not be as hot of an eco-statement as the 2007 global sell out, I am not a plastic bag tote bag. However, growing a tiny garden on your toes will definitely make your life a little bit different.

NEWCOMER DESIGNER
ESMOD School of Fashion in Osaka, showcased her budding wares recently by parading her flourishing fashions on the catwalk. We checked it out and sent Yuko Morimoto to interview one of ESMODs brightest rising stars, Akari Morishita.
When did you start thinking of becoming a designer? When I was young, there was nothing I wanted to wear and my body was small so I started to make clothes to fit my body. I once made a skirt out of handkerchiefs! But it wasnt one that I could just wear going out. Tell us about your training? First, I went to junior college and learned figurative design. For my graduation piece, I created a kimono. It had a unicorn and a rainbow. What inspires you? I get motivated by seeing drawings cause I feel like oh, I have to create something great too! It kind of challenges my imagination. Whats most important when creating? Well I try to put some poison into something sweet. For example, I make it colourful using pinks, reds and oranges but try to leave some weirdness in there. What is your plan after graduating from ESMOD? I want to work with patterns. Maybe someday in the future I can have my own shop selling my work. What do you like to do in your free time? Of course I love creating clothes but I also love creating, you know, anything. What do you do to keep your imagination fresh? I try to be curious and question things, even the little things in my daily life.

Dressing for the Elements

Words by Sophie Lloyd Photos copyright Seco

Unlike most of us who despair over what to wear when the heavens open, Buenos Aires fashionistas welcome rainy days with open arms as it gives them the perfect excuse to step out in Secos stylish rainwear.
Were not talking big, clumpy Hunter-style boots here, we mean cute, dinky rain boots in an array of colours and prints, complete with a matching rain mac or shoulder cape, not forgetting that stylish brolly. What started when Buenos Aires-born designer Veronica de Miero made a rain mac for her architect husband Jorge Mazzinghi over six years ago has developed into a fun, fully-fledged rainwear and accessories brand by the name of Seco (which incidentally means dry in Spanish). The brand has a boutique in Buenos Aires and also sells its collections online. The colourful patterns are all the brands own designs, from cutesy floral and heart motifs to animal print patterns. And now, the men can have fun in the rain too as the brand has extended their womens and childrens collections to include funky checked rain boots and raincoats for men. Whats more, the price to pay for staying dry wont break the bank. A pair of gum boots will set you back just US$45 to US$50, 35,000YEN to 40,000 YEN. When the sun comes out again, you can sport Secos leggings, T-shirts, soon-tobe-launched swimwear and other garments, all with a weather theme.

Irish Brides are Bang on Trend

Words by Karl Fradgley Translation by Akiyo Yagyu akiyo_yagyu@hotmail.co.jp

Like high street style, bridal trends come and go every season. Classic shapes like the strapless, A-line, or the cut to the knee fishtail, will never really go out of fashion. For the more adventurous bride however, her wedding dress often needs to be more on trend and one or two styles are especially popular this season : The Princess Cut with fuller skirt and The Slinky, Sheath dress.
The Princess Cut is for the bride who loves to party. Heavy satins are swapped for more comfortable, lightweight taffetas. The look is the same but the weight is taken away, making it much easier to wear than it looks. Ruching, gathering and crystals are often used to embellish the skirts. Bodices tend to be less detailed. Vice-versa can be just as gorgeous, a detailed bodice falling to a simpler skirt. Either way is fab but its best to go with one or the other. Over-detail equals over-kill! If youre considering a fuller skirted gown then there are a few things to remember. Strapless necklines are the most popular. They balance the silhouette as well as highlighting the neck, shoulders and collar. Ultimately they are flattering to most female figures. If you fancy something with a strap, try to keep it V-neck to accentuate height and suggest at cleavage without shocking the priest. Keep the strap either sheer or quite delicate to avoid it looking chunky. The Princess Cut draws an invisible line across the body at the narrowest part, the waist. Theyre best suited to brides who are naturally curvy, as they really underline the hour-glass figure. This funky, white number by Mori-Lee Bridal, (1) looks great on our voluptuous model. It hints at cleavage without being

trashy. The skirt is puffball with crystal appliqu to catch the eye. Fancy a more sultry look? Then how about this slinky David Fielden number? (2) This gown is cut on the bias in polished silk. The silhouette is trumpet a softer version of the fishtail with a gorgeous cowel draped around a structured bust. Its finished with a delicate ribbon detail, swept around the neck in an almost organic halter, framing the top of the body beautifully. The silky, sheath gowns is all the rage in Europe this season, but its difficult to wear. Silks are especially unforgiving clinging to everything. I always advise my brides to consider providing a smooth surface between the fabrics in the gown and their skin. Bridal underwear is key. Ultimately it doesnt matter what size you are, a dress like this needs a seamless, smooth drape, that you will feel comfortable and sexy wearing. At the end of the day no matter what you are wearing, your wedding dress needs to reflect your own sense of style and your personality. Its so important that you feel fabulous in your gown and if you feel beautiful then it doesnt matter one bit whats fashionable or not. Remember its often said that fashions come and go but style is everlasting.

The Midosuji

Japan has a reputation for quality and its love of shopping. Combine these two ideals and its easy to see why every major luxury fashion brand has set up shop in the land of the rising sun.
Osaka, Japans second city, is often forgotten in favour of Tokyos glamour, but maybe just maybe, Kansais where its at. Famous for its culinary flair and the amiable, fun loving nature of its citizens, Osaka has it all. With excellent department stores, huge malls, quirky shtengai and Amerikamura, a unique shopping district brimming with the latest manifestation of Osakan fashion, you could be forgiven for feeling youre in shopping heaven. Laura Laine

When the fashion illustration world is being jammed with so many rich colorful vector drawings, typical six foot tall downtown girls as well as their sex-and-the-city life style and attitudes, Laura Laines illustrations are like silent flowers, blooming in the desert.
Breaking common conceptions about fashion illustration, the Finnish illustrators palette is seldom filled with more than three colors. Laine precisely captures the moment before the tension of each pose bursts. You can see it in the motion of the garments, the voluminous, flyway hair and the blurred intensity in the eyes Interestingly, Laines use of monochromatic tones arent overly Burtonesque, but rather imbue the models with a haunting luxury. Not surprisingly, famed magazine The New Yorkers and high street fashion brands H&M and ZARA fell in love with her dark angels. So how on earth did the Helsinki based, Laura Laine create these enchanting girls? I recently asked her for some of her thoughts. How did you first become interested in fashion illustration? Originally I studied fashion at the University of Art and Design Helsinki, but I realized quite early in my studies that I wanted to concentrate on illustrating fashion rather than designing it. I felt I could best make my ideas come alive on paper, and I wanted to tell a story with images, not with pieces of garment. Ive always drawn a lot. Fashion has still remained as
30

a major source of inspiration for me, but I have never regretted giving up the actual designing. How would you describe your style as well as the girls you sketched? I like drawing black and white twistedbodied strange girls. I like surreal elements and atmosphere. In most of your works, why do you prefer girls with long and flyway hair styles and monotones of grey and black? I like drawing hair because I think its a great element for expression. You can only go so far with twisting and distorting the human anatomy to maintain a sense of the real, but with hair the possibilities are pretty much endless. I prefer to work in black and white; grayscale is not a lack of color for me. I feel I can best express my ideas this way because theyre more about shape, texture and line. I feel that rather than being a supportive element, other color might often be interference by taking attention off things I find important. I do use color sometimes but very sparsely. A very important element of the grayscale palette for me is also the mood it creates. Have your works ever been inspired or influenced by someone? Ive been inspired majorly by the works of Egon Schiele and Japanese manga. I dont find either very current at the moment but I think the influence is still there.

Which of your projects made your reputation as a fashion illustration artist? I have no idea. Maybe its better that way. In all the brands and magazines you have worked with so far, how did you integrate their styles and concepts into yours? Its always different with each client, some let me work more freely than others. I feel lucky in a way that I rarely have the need to compromise a lot. The best kind of clients are the ones who know what they are commissioning, and dont try to make me adapt to a style they have in mind. Of course whilst working I keep in the back of my head always the client so that I dont for example go too dark with some images. As a fashion illustration artist, what is fashion for you? A source of inspiration more than anything else. Recently, what are you busy with? Ive been working with drawings for an upcoming exhibition in Helsinki.

Forget Me Not Coco

In this F Empire there are too many geniuses, and their unstopped creativeness keeps challenging our imaginations. For insiders, it might be a movable feast, but for the rest of us innocent victims, fashion victims of course, its a cold and sweet spell whispering Dare you forget me. Coco, a French graphic artist simply launched her inspiring accessories brand Forget-Me-Not and her name became unforgettable.
This latest Autumn/Winter 2010 collection from FMN sees Cocos inspiration stem from the myths and legends which have captured mankinds imagination across centuries, the sea goddess Calypso, Morphesu and the snow nymph. Dreamlike and surreal illustrations blend harmoniously with unique geometrical abstractions. Such balance has been created so that the co-star winged creatures and fantastical beings appearing on each design fail to hog the limelight of the gylphs. Whats more, the use of the palette of ocean blues, dusty pinks, rich grey and midnight black is also very impressive. In short, each design in this collection is not only very wearable but also stunningly artistic. With the great success of this collection, Coco is sure to continue looking for muses to surprise us in her own way while we take a breath and whisper back, bewitch us again.

Amores Trash
Style Speaks Louder than Words

Words by Sophie Lloyd Photos by Amores Trash Couture Translated by Noriko L. norikoladjimi@hotmail.co.jp

Amores Trash Couture is not fashion, its style. This is the motto of the bright, young Buenos Aires label, founded by 31-year-old Maria Laura Gomez Tomei (a.k.a. Amores). Amores Trash Couture isnt just driven by the latest trends, its found its own unique voice and caters for the fun-loving party girl with a special love for the 80s.
Describing her collections as prt-a-couture, Amores turns out sexy statement-making dresses and other brightly coloured body-conscious evening-wear in silk, satin, velvet and fur. The look is trashy yet sophisticated, dressy yet wearable, feminine with attitude. In addition to the namesake clothing line on the ground floor, Amores has a treasure trove of funky vintage clothing and accessories to rifle through upstairspieces that the designer has picked up from vintage markets at home and abroad. This, along with the plush, homey ambience, party photos on the wall and friendly staff make Amores Trash Couture feel like more than just a fashion boutique. As Amores declares, ATC is not just about clothing, we want to offer something more.

HEALTH AND BEAUTY

Autumn is a dry season. Our body loses water and nutrients. Beyond skin care and make up, we can beautify from the inside. The humble tomato is one of our skins best friends. Youll find 20-30 mg of vitamin C in each one. Vitamin C can builds up your resistance to infection. Antioxidants in tomatoes can inhibit melanin production and fight the effects of aging. Tomatoes even prevent heart disease and cancer. A super fruit indeed!
Tomato Tips:
1. Try not to mix tomatoes with carrots and cucumbers as the enzymes in them will rob you of precious vitamin C. 2. Dont eat tomatoes on an empty stomach. Tomatoes contain can easily cause a chemical reaction with gastric juices, and create indissoluble substances that cause stomachaches. 3. Watch out for raw tomatoes. Green tomatoes contain solanine. Eat too many raw tomatoes and you risk a poisonous infection.
