This year was for many of us a year of great

achievement! The launch of our new online magazine

was appreciated worldwide as reflected by hundreds

of emails. Thank you for all your support.

Do you feel that globalization has become the

norm? Just 15 years ago people were amazed

21
when someone said they had a pen pal in a foreign

country Now via internet communication, a boast

15
of 500 online friends barely raises an eyebrow.

To know whats happening and better yet, to know

what people are wearing abroad has never been

easier to find out. Fashion is part of this wave and

its a trend everyone is riding.

Information about fashion should not only be free

but international. We also dont wish to change that

feeling of flicking through a magazine so the digital

format is a breeze from page to page.

En Vie does this and most importantly gives you

fashion news, insight and culture at your finger tips.

En Vie speaks to fashion consumers, workers and

lovers alike. We hope to keep receiving emails from
En Vie
the voice of fashion, our readers. This allows En Vie

to better evolve and be its best for you.

The En Vie team wishes you and your family a

peaceful and Merry Christmas!

NEW BRA TO LURE OVERSEAS VISITORS

bra that aims to attract overseas visitors to Japan. Something
skimpy and seductive you might be thinking? Well not
quite. The royal blue brassieres are designed in a modest
corset shape and allow room for a small monitor around
the stomach to display major tourist sites. With a simple
push on one of the three gold buttons they even talk, saying

likes the Japanese approach to fashion and often
collaborates with artist/graphic designer Sasha
(Aleksandar Skoric ) who is based in Japan. He
enjoys Japanese art and Takeshi Kitano movies.
I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to ask
Zoran a few questions.

to strike the balance between art and commerce is

quite a challenge.
Is there any advice that you can give to new
designers?
Young designers need to focus their vision and
do a lot of research and preparation work before
designing and marketing [their] collection. It is really
important to believe in yourself, have a clear vision
and not to get discouraged.

A Beautiful Friend
When I think of the best dressed people I know, its the little things I remember
about themthe unexpected gems that complete a look from head to toe.
I recently met with such a friend who wore a headpiece so elegant, so
understated, that I had to find out more. The designer of that exquisite
headpiece is Erin Fitzpatrick. Her Bel Ami headpieces are fast becoming the
hottest accessory across North America.
Your designs do appear particularly
chic and high end. How do you go
about achieving this result which sets
them apart from the rest?
You can notice a difference in Bel Ami head
pieces the moment you see and touch
them...they are carefully made by hand
under my supervision- with every detail
done to perfection. The materials used
are also the highest quality- with Mokuba
Japanese ribbon (the Cadillac of ribbons),
and imported fabrics.
I cant help but be reminded of the fash
-ionable hit series Gossip Girl when I
look at these headbands. Has the campus
fashion featured on that show, influenced
your design concept in any way?
Yes definitely...how could it not? Blair Waldorf
(one of the shows leading ladies) is the Queen
of headbands-constantly adorned in the
most high end headpieces. I love getting
inspired by what she and other girls on the
street are doing in terms of hair accessories.
18

Do you have any tips for how to wear

your headpieces this winter? What
outfits/occasions suit them best?
Honestly- any occasion merits a Bel Ami
headpiece- whether it be a casual dinner
with friends, a Charity Gala, or to the
officethere is a piece that fits. I would
definitely wear a more classic style like a
triple satin black bow headband on a daily
basis, and then something with a little more
decadent feel-like our chain link headband
or swirling flower design with vintage crest
button for a night out.
What feedback has surprised/
interested you the most since
launching Bel Ami?
I think the suggestions I get from people
as to where to take my business. I was
recommended about a year ago to get
into School Headbands (which match with
uniform colours and adorned with school
crest buttons). This has led to a whole new
niche market for me.

Words by Michael Hobbs

Photos by Bel Ami

What were the biggest challenges

when launching Bel Ami?
Getting into stores and then more recently
with the launch of Bel Ami Private School
Headbands- keeping up with demand.
Born in Calgary, Alberta on the August 20th,
1984, Erin Fitzpatrick runs Bel Ami out of
Toronto Canada.

Breakfast at Tiffanys, has nothing to do with being delicious, though

the quiet and proud look might calm the sweetly vulnerable and lonely
soul of someone such as Audrey Hepburn. However, with Christmas
impending (whether you like or not), this year lonely Audreys should
all jump in a cab and head over to Abatabas, because there, theyre
going to have the sweetest and warmest breakfast of the year!

Abataba

Created by Spanish sisters Ana and Marta, Abataba, the handmade jewelry, is
made for optimistic and cheerful people who look for something different. How
different? Well lets say, if you got the whole collection of Abataba Sweet together,
then youre ready to hold a party for Tinker bell and her fairy friends.

AnaMarta Abataba

Abataba sweets

With Christmas around the corner, what else

could be better than Abatabas sweets to make
you remember the warm, fragrant odor of
mothers kitchen?
Not joking, Abatabas sweet accessories look just as yummy and warm as those
Christmas indulgences. Freshly popped toast, sweet apple pie, donuts with thick
chocolate, and those lovely macaroons! With Christmas around the corner, what
else could be better than Abatabas sweets to make you remember the warm,
fragrant odor of mothers kitchen?
And, as a sugarfree advocate, I have to confess I would never take real sweets
to cure my blues; instead, Id wear an Abataba ring and take a taxi to someone who
is always there, waiting for me till breakfast.

In.cube8 Your Dreams

Words by Kornelia Keskes.

Hello, its me; Isy, the originator of this little project, the in.cube8r gallery.
I held onto this dream, sat on it for close to 12 whole years. To be
honest, it was fear that held me back.
in.cube8r is an original concept. Tell us
how it works?
Artists can rent out a glass cube, a 2D
partition, wall space, some shelves or a
clothes rack for a 3 month period but can
change their stock over regularly.
Rent starts @ $21 per week and is paid
monthly; we then pay the artist monthly for
what has sold in the store. They pocket
100%, we take no commission
This space is open to anybody and offers
artists the exposure and the opportunity to
trial ideas, any ideas. Its a space where you
make all the decisions over your creations
and how they are displayed. We give you
back the power, the funds you generate and
show you off to whoever walks into our space.
Whats the purpose behind in.cube8r?
What were doing is creating a sustainable
future for handmade in the form of
a platform for creators of handmade
goodness. This is my vision and my future
and I will stop at nothing to grow this here
as well as off shore.
What was your motivation to start
in.cube8r?
When I stood in that disheartening dole
queue in early 2007 and listened to how the
desensitized social workers spoke to

everyone with grouchy disdain, I thought

to myself, OK. So Im lying on my death
bed, whats my biggest regret? The answer
came immediately, Not having done
anything about the in.cube8r gallery dream.
At that point I knew it was now or never.
That was the turning point of my life. So, I
clenched my teeth and jumped.
Whats been your greatest success so
far?
The whole thing!! its been an honour to
mentor and host so much talent. There is
something about representing handmade
that can only be described as magical.
Whats been the biggest challenge
youve faced?
3 things; Glass half empty people, copy cats
and the amount of daily email. Im getting a
VA this week.
Whats your top tip for women in
business?
Dont wait! Do it now!!! Jump into it with
all your might, like I said before; even if it
doesnt work at least you tried! :)
On July 12, 2007 in.cube8r opened its
doors to the public with 9 cube holders.
Within 7 weeks they were full and have
stayed that way ever since.

A Girls Day Out; in Osaka

shopping day
What better way to spend the day than shopping in Osaka?

Sleep in, a light breakfast, a touch of make-up, and a quick walk to the
train station to set the day in action.
The streets and shops are bustling with people, all dressed in
gorgeous autumn fashions. Weaving through the streets of Kitahorie I
find beautiful boutiques and quality vintage stores. Its such an exciting
and invigorating feeling walking into each new outlet, the doors go
swish inviting me in to sample the awaiting treasure trove, each one
different to the last. Clothing, accessories, homeware, gifts; so much
to see! And ooh, I want it all! A girl can dream ;-)
After meeting a friend for coffee to recharge, together we finish
the afternoon by meandering down stylish Orange Street. Im drawn
to this street for its range of unique stores sporting the latest fashions
and I especially love the interior design shops. Naturally I had to buy
something and found a gorgeous orange and grey woollen cardigan
in Hachiloq86. Not only cute, but comfy and will keep me toasty as
winter moves in.

A New Years Tale
Words by Jesse Reidak
Illutration by Zandra Koe

10 minutes to 2011. Low slung bass pulsated from towering

speakers and the catered food trays chatter in metallic unison
to the steady techno beat. This New Years costume party was
Osakas most exclusive New Years bash.
Ayako leaned back against the bar rail and rested on her left leg.
Her long black hair was meticulously curled in to a hundred ringlets,
splayed over the top of her heavenly silken white dress, perfectly
tapered to her small feminine yet powerful frame. Her wings

Ayako had been pacing the hall all evening seeking her New Years
prince. Now, as her friends stumbled from the dance floor towards
the bar, she spied an eye dropping man in a cowboy outfit leaning
against a distant pool table. Normally shed never approach a man,
but armed with her innocently seductive New Years costume, she
felt strangely empowered. Biting her lip, she took her first step
towards the man, trying to keep her confidence in check.
Steeling an upwards glance she saw him fixedly watching her, his
lips curling in to a playful smile, hers responsively shot upwards,
but her eyes instinctively shot to the floor. The beats swirled hazily
in the background of the traverse and Ayako felt the raw power of
anticipation. Looking up again she could see his jaw was sharply
angular, his eyelashes long and delicate, his eyes soft and warm.
She reached him, paused, their eyes locked, hearts throbbing

moderate confusion washed over her. The mans voice was high

man retrieved a pink stick of lip balm from his jeans pocket. Huh!
Whats that?
The mans smile broadened. Its the new lipsmax balmyou want

with a heart shaped ring, nails polished in the latest colours.
Youre a woman!? Ayako shouted. A wave of thunderous laughter
erupted from the petite cowboy.
Ya, my costume is good, isnt it?
A giant 3D 10 burst on to the monitor. Ayakos eyes narrowed,
her anger dissolved and her face broke into a saucy smile.

December 2010 12

You will have a lucky month filled with good moods. Share
your happiness with others for greater luck. For you single
people, there is a strong chance of a romantic date. Couples
take note, open your mind and share your feelings and your
partner will understand.
Lucky Metal: Iron, Lucky Gem: Ruby

You will get many new ideas for work but its the suggestions
from others that will make things feasible. Gloomy days are
in the past and smiles return to your face. But if you lose
control of your spending then your credit card bill will give
you a nasty surprise.
Lucky Metal: Copper, Lucky Gem: Coral

Being opportunistic will only make you lose money in the long
run. In work, be more active and diligent. In love always seek
the positive in the situations and people who surround you.
Stay calm, a simple misunderstanding could lead to a long
cold war. That is not what you need.
Lucky Metal: Platinum, Lucky Gem: Agate

This months fortune is up and down but not so strong. Work

is going well, you have invested a lot of thought and time
but perhaps you have been negligent in your love life. If you
cant deal with your relationship problems then that stress will
adversely affect the rest of your life. A small gift could work
wonders but make sure you keep your promises.
Lucky Metal: Silver, Lucky Gems: Crystal and Pearls.

Business is good, your fortune is stable and rising. But in love

your fortunes are the opposite. The good thing is that your
kindness and warm heart will help raise the mood towards
the end of this month. Be generous with your thoughts.
Less fighting = less stress.

Business is stable with good fortunes. However, when you

feel stressed or youre unhappy with a colleague or client,
avoid being abrupt and be careful with your words. As for
love, you may feel youre at a foggy crossroads. Remember,
nothing is perfect. Love needs a strong heart.

When the
Colds Calling...

Words by Izumi
Translated by S. Namba
and Yuko Morimoto

Its not a good time for investing money but its a good chance
to study how to manage your money. Singles will be lucky in
love; there are many chances around you. A friendly and open
chat will be a good beginning to a love relationship. Toleration
is the greatest gift of love.
Lucky Metal: Copper, Lucky Gem: Emerald

Be flexible in work and life. You will have many chances to

show your ability at work but if you set too many standards
too high for love, then you will easily miss out on true love.
Hair isnt long enough, eyes not the right colour, is it really
that important?
Lucky Metal: Iron, Lucky Gem: Ruby.

There are many things you want to finish but sometimes you
feel a lack of confidence. Better to change your mindset first
and dont give up. Make time to spend with your lover. Have a
walk and do some sports outside or go to a market and then
cook together.
Lucky Metal: Bronze, Lucky Gem: Turquoise

If you cant manage your time you may be in trouble. Please

calm your mind, talk less work more. Be wary of love that
comes too fast. Is this just temptation? If youre already in a
relationship then take care of your lover when theyre down or
others may take the chance.
Lucky Metals: Lead, Lucky Gem: Onyx

You want a new mobile phone, a new winter coat... Too many
requests will only stress out your partner. If you always put
material gain higher than emotional gain, then your love will
change. The grass is always greener so cherish what you
have. The end of month will be busy, make time to relax.
Lucky Metal: Platinum/Radium, Lucky Gem: Amethyst

In work, new ideas will be warmly greeted from both the staff
and the boss but its easy to argue with those who help you
when opinions differ. Do your best to avoid this. Singles take
note, the right one may walk into your life in the middle to the
end of this month. Its a sweet month for couples.

The season of sneezing and tissue grabbing is here. Colds

are in the air. As you know, modern medication is the best
way to deal with any serious illness but as Mama always
said, prevention is better than cure. Heres a few natural
solutions to help prevent those nasty symptoms coming to
the fore and to deal with them if they do.

General Prevention:
Drink lots of warm water! Water cleans your body, stimulates circulation and keeps things running efficiently. An efficient body can fight
illnesses more efficiently. Makes sense huh? Try some ginger tea? Add
some brown sugar and a piece of ginger to black tea and gently bring
to the boil.

Eat energy rich foods packed with vitamins and minerals. A healthy
diet keeps your immune system in tip top shape and gives you the
energy needed to fight off baddies. Red peppers, carrots, pumpkins,
tomatoes, red apples and persimmons are rich in beta-carotene which
helps prevent colds. Anything with Vitamin C is great as this boosts
the immune system.

Good hygiene can keep sickness at bay. Keyboards, handrails, money

and especially mobile phones are often coated in bacteria and grime.
Touching your eyes, nose and mouth with dirty hands increases your
chance of infection. Gotta wash those hands people.
Stay away from sick people. Duh!

()

Stay warm and dry. While we all like to act a little Gene Kelly at times,
its essential to get warm and dry immediately after a spot of wet
karaoke. The body needs energy to warm up and dry off, energy it
diverts from the immune system to do so. Thats why its called a cold
people (note - that may not actually be why its called a cold).

Dealing with those pesky symptoms:

Waking up with a swollen sore throat? Every morning and before sleep,
gargle warm salt water. This can clean your mouth and inhibit bacterial
growth. Dissolve half a teaspoon of salt in one full glass of warm water.
Spit, dont swallow. This wont cure the inflammation but it can kill a lot
of the germs in your mouth.

What about that stuffed nose? Breathe easy, breath steam. Bring
water to the boil and remove it from the hob. Drape a towel over your
head and lean over the steamy liquid. Inhale deeply and slowly for a
cleansing effect.

And that mild fever? Stick to all the tips above for prevention, drink lots
of water and rest, dont waste that energy, eat liquid foods that are
easily digestible like juices and soups and also oranges, full of energy
and packed with vitamin C. Stay warm but if the fever gets more
serious, consult a physician immediately.

Remember this isnt medical advice. Please consult doctor for the most accurate information on cold prevention and cure.

When we hear the words, Made in Japan, it

conjures in the mind ideas such as precision,
quality, reliability and great design. In a world,
where generations of, they dont make it like
they used to, has left us with a legacy of

to the ways of old. A return to quality and
longevity, ladies and gentlemen, a return to
Made in Japan.
The city of Yamaguchi, Japan, has been famous
as a hot bed of jeans production since 1949. One
company of note to grow forth from this densely
packed urban tangle of concrete towers and low
warehouses, hemmed in by double lined streets, is
BLUE WAY. In 1984 they launched the women only
brand, et. Made with an attention to detail and bred
with all the characteristics we expect from those
three words, they are rightly labelled, Made in Nippon.

As mentioned in last months issue Osakas opulent

thread of fashion is epitomized by the glamorous
Midosuji Boulevard and its big names. Right now
however theres a big desire for the simple cut of
fashion, that satisfies style and our bank balance.
Thats why UNIQLO opened its fifth global flagship
store in Japans commercial city of Osaka last month
to masses of loyal consumers. The sleekly designed
building stands proudly on the corner of Osakas
shopping mecca, Shinsaibashi and joins global
flagships stores in New York, London, Paris and
Shanghai. Proving that low prices arent just appealing
to the budget consumer, big budget stars like Orlando
Bloom, Charlize Theron and Keisuke Honda adorned
the walls of the multi-storey complex. By doing the
basics things better for less, UNIQLO marches on.
