BC Library Fund Raiser Huge Success

The Chico News & Reviews firstever golf tournament fundraiser, Links for Literacy, held on Saturday June 18, 2011, raised $5,400 on behalf of the Butte County Librarys Childrens Summer Reading Program, On World, Many Stories. The tournament was held at the beautiful Tuscan Ridge Golf Club on the Skyway in Paradise, where dozens of library and literacy supporters competed in an 18 Hole Scramble from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm. Potential prizes for a Hole in One included a motorcycle and a Subaru car donated by Chicos Courtesy Motors, as well as years worth of free groceries. Golfers did their best to compete for the unclaimed prizes, and were honored at an awards ceremony following the tournament. The Chico News & Review selected the Butte County Library as the benefactor of the tournament in recognition of the shared interest in reading and literacy. A central goal of the One World, Many Stories Summer Library Program is to help prevent young readers from falling behind in their reading skills during the summer months, ensuring they return to school at or above their existing reading level. Proceeds from the tournament will go directly towards the purchase of new, much-needed childrens books in support of this goal. As further incentive, a donated bicycle raffle incentive prize for the Chico Branch Library encouraged young readers simply to sign-up for the program. The success of the first Links for Literacy Golf Tournament is a direct result of valued community partners, sponsors, and volunteers working together towards a shared, community-minded goal: childrens literacy. Library staff volunteered as course monitors and had a wonderful time working together outside of the typical library branch setting. Chico News & Review staff executed the tournament details with kindness, generosity, and professionalism, ensuring that everyone present had a great time golfing together on Fathers Day weekend. A culminating raffle of donated items such as diamond earrings, Oakley Sunglasses, and gift baskets of local foods like olive oil and almonds garnered approximately $400 of the total contribution for the Childrens Summer Library Program. It is hoped that this highly successful fundraiser will be the first of many more to come. A few weeks ago a long term employee had a tragedy. Yasenia Alonsos husband was involved in Alaskan Fishing Boat Accident that claimed 5 lives, one being Yasenias husband. Yasenia has 3 children ages 15, 8 and 6 to provide and care for as a single parent. What we as sister communities are doing is holding a fundraiser on behalf of the Alonso Family. The Big Event: Councours de la Chapelle Now in its third year, the Concours de la Chapelle is rapidly becoming regionally recognized as one of the most elegant and fun social events in Butte County. It attracts car owners and attendees from all over the state and beyond. This is a multi-faceted event showcasing classic cars, an art show, ballet dancers, jazz, local food, and spirits with the backdrop of one of the northstates most unique B&Bs. This event will take place on August 27, 2011 from 5-10pm. The Location: Chapelle de LArtiste, 3300 Inspiration Lane, Paradise, CA 95969 As you enter this property through the expansive gates of Inspiration Lane, youre drawn to the quaint chapel that sits at the top of the hill, which provided the inspiration for the name of the property, Chapelle de LArtiste or Chapel of the Artist. The classically-styled barn which currently functions as the owners studio, sits under oak trees to the left and is serenaded by a 3-tiered water fountain in the center of the drive and kept watch over by three curious llamas. Call for Artists: Art-in-the-Barn at the Concours de la Chapelle This years theme for this art show consists of the two major things that make up the Concours de la Chapelle event: Classic European Cars and the beautiful Paradise foothills. Artists whose subjects fit into this theme are invited to submit work. All media will be considered. Rules of Entry: Accepted applicants will have at least one work in the show. All work must be for sale and available to display and sell during the art show. All work must be wired and ready to hang. No sawtooth hangers are allowed. Each piece must be clearly identified. A 20% commission will be taken from the sale of the art. 15% of this will be given to the Northern California Ballet. Application Requirements: The art show (see fees below) application is due by Saturday, July 23rd. All applicants will be informed of accepted work by Friday, July 29th. Your best defense against heat-related illness is prevention, says Dr. Mark Lundberg, Butte County Health Officer. Staying cool and making simple changes in your environment, fluid intake, activities, and clothing during hot weather can help you remain safe and healthy. Going to an air conditioned environment is often the best option to avoid heat-related illnesses. There are a number of public places with air conditioning where people can go to cool off during the day. If your home cooling system is affected by the power outage, go to a store, shopping center, library or other location with air conditioning. Even a few hours spent in air conditioning can help your body stay cooler when you go back into the heat. If you need to stay home during the power outage, here are some further recommendations to prevent heat related health conditions: Remember to hydrate frequently. Rehydration is recommended by drinking plenty of non-alcoholic fluids. Avoid strenuous activities in hot weather conditions, especially between 11a.m. and 3p.m. which is typically the hottest part of the day. Wear lightweight, light colored clothing. Wear a hat when outdoors. If possible, take cool showers/baths frequently. While overheating can occur in any healthy individual, the elderly, young children and people with certain medical conditions are at highest risk for heat-related illnesses. For those most susceptible, hot environments should be avoided whenever possible. Be sure to also remember your pets. Animals need a cool, shady place to sleep during hot weather, as well as plenty of clean, fresh water that is accessible at all times. When receiving notice of future utility services and repairs, please plan ahead to ensure youve taken precautions to avoid heat related illnesses. Weather conditions during this time of year often allow these necessary operations to take place. Better planning and preparedness on our part will limit the effects of these services on both our health and lifestyle.

June has always been my favorite month of the year. Schools out, relatives come to visit, and it is normally swim-suit weather. I love watching children at play, movies in the park, and picnics. I have fond memories of shing in mountain streams, on the lakes, and even in the San Francisco Bay. As a teen, horseback riding and preparing to march in the 4th of July parades gave me thrills, and the crowds excitement tickled my fancy. At dusk, the reworks lit up the sky, causing me to Ohoooo and Aaaahh! Will you be staying home the 4th of July weekend? Are you planning on participating in the festivities on First Friday of July events planned in Historical Downtown Oroville? If not, why not? Fireworks/Fun Night on Bird Street starts at 4 p.m. There will be fun and games sponsored by our local YMCA, live music on the street outside of Housers Music Store, plus Oro Dam Cruisers will be present with their families and Classic Cars. Bring the family downtown to the reworks show, presented by the Oroville Fire Department. It starts at 6:30 p.m., and the rst 50 youngsters will receive a Sparkler to use during the reworks display. Games, prizes, and discount coupons, will be given out to attendees. You can obtain discounts on reworks, to be redeemed the at Olive Highway YMCA booth. YES! And of course, the stores will stay open downtown, until 7 p.m., Friday, July 1st. More reworks are scheduled at Lake Oroville on Monday night, the 4th of July.
