Club Captains Message

Greetings fellow Scarfies. Id like to welcome the visiting team to the hallowed (and muddy) turf of Kelburn Park. Its only been in the last couple of years that weve been able to host this side and for a number of reasons I have to say that most of us are hoping not to have to do it again. Of course, Im talking about the Uni Firsts, who get to be the away team for this clash with the fabulous Gossies. For the Firsts it is a rare opportunity to play here, perhaps the only way they can given its been April since their last appearance at KP. For the Gossies, gracious hosts as they are, Im sure they will extend a warm welcome to our Firsts, at least until kickoff. Football derbies bring out the tribal passion in fans, and Im sure that the couple of dozen (optimistic) or so people on the sideline of KP today (or Crawford Green, or some venue in a couple of weeks if this crap weather continues) will be taking sides. The game will be followed up by another clash from Capital 6 as the Accies and Stallions square off at Te Whaea from 5pm. As this is a special issue we even asked for comments from all four teams previewing the epic clashes to come. Wed hoped for in-depth analysis worthy of Alan Hansen on Match of the Day. Instead, we got something more akin to Alan Partridge. Read for yourself on the next page. Still, its nice to know that no matter what the outcome (as as club captain Im going to be diplomatic), there will be beer flowing in KP Clubrooms after the games, with hopefully everyone remembering that the intra-club rivalries only have to last for 90 minutes on the pitch. And at least Uni will be a winner on the day... ....unless we have two draws. On that note, a plug for the Mid Year event coming up on Saturday 16 July, here at KP. Id like to invite you all to the Captains Ball, a celebration of the halfway point in the season, with a captainy theme for some reasons I wont go in to here. Well keep you posted on the details Craig

Match Previews

v
GOSSIES v FIRSTS KELBURN PARK 2.30

GOSSIES VIEW
In March 1991 the First Teams nemesis was born. They say that you should keep your friends close and your enemies closer. Given that the Gossies play both roles to the First team we are kept very close indeed. So close in fact that at some point the Firsts decided that their best way of keeping an eye on the Gossies was to join them in Capital 2. Only one thing to say about that GET OUT, THIS IS OUR SANDPIT!!!

FIRSTS VIEW
The past three seasons have seen five derby matches between the two top teams of the mighty VUWAFC. This weekend sees the sixth (and hopefully final) derby game. The record currently sits at two wins a piece in this series of games, with one draw. While this weekends fixture may be depleted in numbers (I will be surprised if there are 22 players to take the field), the spirit will still be there. For the neutrals, there is the entertaining prospect of Jesse Whitehead possibly squaring up for his third scrap in three years. Look for Jimmy Hardaker bombing forward to even the ledger after his betrayal goal last year as well. Heres hoping there are a few holes in that Gossamer defence! (probably the first time that sentence has even been written)

v
STALLIONS v ACCIES TE WHAEA 5.30

STALLIONS VIEW
Accies fear the Stallions. Sure, they have never lost a game to them, but during their hardest moments of weekly training and intense pre-match drills they wonder what it would be like to be 10-15 years older, but still playing at the top level of Cap 6. They wish they could have their Thursday nights free of training, rock up 10 minutes before the game starts and maybe have a penalty shootout as warm-up. They look to the Stallions' enthusiastic crowd of under 5's and ask: "Who is cheering for me? Who loves the Accies?" No one loves the Accies, not even all those Accies who have requested a Stallions transfer. On Saturday at Te Whaea, the Accies will face their future, and their doom.

ACCIES VIEW
When you think of football rivalries over the years, there are few that have caught the imagination of many. Argentina - Brazil, Barcelona - Real Madrid, Inter and AC Milan. The University Accies vs University Stallions rivalry rightfully sits in that bracket. Since the formation of the Accies in 2010, each clash between these two sides has been a tight tussle (And the Accies have always won). Wherever the Accies have gone, the Stallions have been sure to not be far behind. Some might think the Stallions are destined to be bridesmaids, although I'm sure they would have a different story to tell. Nevertheless, expect a ferocious encounter on Saturday at Te Fire because the Accies don't give an inch, and we'll take your mile! C'MON YOU ACCIES!!!

Front Cover: Nice photo of KP on a fine day put here to prove two things (i) KP can actually look nice and was not always mud and (ii) that were running out of photos for the match programmes. If you have any shots of Vic teams in action, email them to victoriaunivesityfootball@gmail.com so we can add them to the programmes and stop having to use this stock photo every single week from here on...

Womens First Team Reports

University vs Tawa (Won 3-1) After a solid win the previous week to one of the top teams on the table, we went into the game against Tawa with high anticipation. We started the game with a natural advantage given we were on Te Whaea and used to the way of the artificial, however the weather was not on our side. The pouring rain did not help the vision, which we blame for Tawa managing to slip past the solid defence within the first 5 minutes of the game. However after the slight blinding issue, Tawa didnt see the back of our net (let alone our half of the field) for the rest of the game. We continued our top form of playing decent football and solidified the win with 3 solid goals from Loz, Megs and Bridget. Tawa never had a chance (as usual) and headed back to the burbs with nothing (as usual). University vs Marist (Won 6-0) After an unfortunate loss to Marist in the first round, we were pretty keen to come away with a win. Needless to say we did. We barely let them meet our goalie, Danielle, although Im sure they were very keen to. To be honest, the game is a blur of goals in the back of their net, although Im sure they were all amazing! Im pretty sure everyone on the team managed to get a shot on goal, although only 3 succeeded. Now the roll of honours: Loz (2), Juno (2), Jess and one goal stolen from Juno by the Marist defender, therefore stealing her hat trick. Junos still pretty bitter about that one. Once again playing proper football lead to our solid victory and taught Marist 6 very good lessons. University vs Miramar (Drew 2-2) Another late game at Te Whaea saw us up against the Miramar Rangers. After a nauseating draw the last time, we really wanted to continue our fine winning form and walk away with a solid win. However factors (such as the referee) were not on our side. Miramar managed to slot the first goal however a stunning goal from Loz off a beautiful corner from Megs followed soon after. The score sat at 1-1 at half time and for a good portion of the second half until Megs managed to get her own goal, another stunner from the edge of the box. However, due to a series of unfortunate events, the lead we gained did not last long and Miramar got one back on us, leading to a final result of 2-2. Once again if football and possession was the decider on the day, we would have won the game hands down, however we didnt manage to take advantage of all the opportunities these factors produced. We still walked away ahead of them on the table anyway. University vs Petone, 7.30pm Sunday 3 July, Te Whaea We're up against Petone this Sunday, again under lights at Te Whaea. This is a must-win game for us if we want to challenge for a top 3 finish this season. We've really appreciated all the support we've had this season, and would love to see a good crowd on the sideline to cheer us on this week!

Honour Roll
A massive round of cancellations last Saturday saw only three Varsity sides play (anyone from the Raiders want to tell us how you got on cause Capital Football dont know?). Still, a big win for the Womens 2nds last week is hopefully followed by some more wins today. With at least seven sides still in the hunt for promotion, theres all to play for at the business end of the season...
