Dont sweat the small stuff
By GaBriella Katz
Senior ClaSS PreSident
C
ongratulations Class of
2010! You are all here be-
cause you have success-
fully survived Duxbury High School. I
know it wasnt easy! You managed to
dodge the wild stampede on the main
stairs between second and third block,
to adjust to that dreaded extra hour of
sleep, and let us not forget Swine 09,
but thats another story.
Right now, I would like to wel-
come and extend my congratulations
to my fellow graduates and to all of
the people who have helped us make it
thus far. Family, friends, teachers, and
administrators, this day is as much for
you as it is for my classmates seated
here in cap and gown. You were there
for every band concert, soccer game
and school play; why shouldnt you be
recognized as well?
Today is also about you, you 264
fellow students that I have grown up
with. The students who were there to
pick me up when I fell (mostly up the
stairs), to push me toward my goals (or
towards the front of the lunch line), and
most of all, to challenge me, whether
it be in the classroom or on the gyms
handball Court.
Let us take everything we have
learned here at Duxbury High School
and apply it to our future. The one
important lesson I will take away is:
Dont sweat the small stuff. Or more
eloquently; put life into perspective. It
is hard sometimes to sit back, to relax,
and to see the Big Picture. To realize
that although you received 46 on a ge-
ometry quiz freshmen year, you can
still get into college or get a job. Or,
that even though you were cut from a
varsity team, it wont be the end of life
as you know it.
It is important to look ahead, be-
yond the blue tiled walls of Duxbury
High School. Beyond the college ap-
plication process, which for some of us
has consumed every waking moment
of our lives for the past year and a half.
Look forward to freshmen orientation
where we will meet a diverse group
of new people and exchange pleasant-
ries, something quite unfamiliar after a
year of trading sparkly Silly Bands and
juicy gossip at lunch.
This is a time to think about the type
of people we want to be, both in col-
lege and out in the working world. It
is a chance to enrich our lives with new
friends while maintaining the strong
bonds that have fourished here. We
should remember Rachels Challenge
the belief that if one person can go out
of his or her way to show compassion,
then it will start a chain reaction of the
same. We owe it to ourselves to have a
positive impact on our college commu-
nities and society as a whole. And, it
starts with one simple act of kindness.
Embrace these next few years as an op-
portunity of discovery without loosing
sight of the Big Picture.
We are ready now to go wherever
life takes us. There will be no examina-
tions today, no research papers to pass
in, and no Shakespeare to recite. For
the moment, there is no need to sweat
the small stuff any longer. Instead, we
need only to be prepared to shake with
the right and receive with the left. Oh,
and try not to fall.
Congratulations and good luck

P
rincipal Stephens, members
of the faculty, distinguished
guests, proud parents, and
above all this years graduating class;
it is a privilege to speak in front of you
today. During my freshman year, up-
perclassmen told me that the next four
years would pass quickly. Back then,
I didnt believe them. But now, all so
quickly, we have fnally reached the
culmination of our high school years.
So frst and foremost, I would like to
extend my congratulations to fellow
graduates and, on their behalf, offer
our sincerest thanks to the teachers and
staff, without whom we would not be
here today.
Our education at Duxbury High
School has given us the foundation to
develop into unique individuals with
the ability to strive for excellence in
whatever we choose to pursue. As
well as academic knowledge, I have
learned invaluable lessons in life from
my years here in the classroom. This
can probably best be summed up by a
quote by Christopher Reeve: So many
of our dreams at frst seem impossible,
then they seem improbable, and then,
when we summon the will, they soon
become inevitable. Out of the myriad
of experiences at DHS some things
stand out in my mind as having partic-
ular signifcance. I wanted to recount a
few of them and explain the messages
that I take from them looking back.
Apart from lighting chalkboards
on fre in chemistry, we also watched
educational flms in class during soph-
omore year. One such movie was a
Pixar animation, The Incredibles.
The main character is a superhero that
is forced to live a normal life. After
years of unhappiness and frustration,
he decides to revert back to his former
pastime of saving the world. The main
point of this movie, as our chemistry
teacher put it, is to do what you love.
Constantly, people struggle to maintain
a balance between personal desires, fa-
milial expectations and practical fnan-
cial necessity. Therefore, it is essential
to establish a strong sense of self to
know who we are, what we believe in
and what we stand for. The Duxbury
community, through our education
here at DHS, has encouraged creativ-
ity and innovation in every one of us,
allowing students to defne themselves
on their own terms.
On Valentines Day, junior year,
my Spanish teacher sent carnations to
her AP students. Attached to the fower
was a note written in Spanish that read:
Cinco o Muerto. In English, the mes-
sage translates to Five or Die, refer-
ring to the score each student should
strive to attain on the exam, fve obvi-
ously being the highest. In essence, we
need to recognize that there are people
in this world that believe in us, even if
we dont yet know enough to believe
in ourselves. It is the unfagging sup-
port of our teachers, parents, and peers
that has instilled the confdence in us
to pursue our goals and dreams. Every
one of our teachers has, in some sig-
nifcant way, facilitated our growth to
a higher level of personal development
and academic achievement.
This year in Calculus class, we
learned about derivatives which are a
measure of how one variable changes
with respect to another variable. To
fnd the derivative, we learned that
one must fnd the limit of the func-
tion. After proceeding for several
weeks on this premise we then learned
something unexpected sometimes,
the limit does not exist. Now here is a
real life application of that mathemati-
cal anomaly; in terms of our potential,
the limit does not exist and we should
not hold back in fear. We should walk
through life open-minded and take ad-
vantage of the opportunities that pres-
ent themselves in numerous forms. In a
world of infnite possibility, take a risk
albeit a calculated one.
The Hucklebuck is a fun, light-
hearted dance taught to us by our very
own Mrs. Ciccarelli. In English class
one day, she told her senior students to
form a circle and follow her lead. As
we twirled around, we started to laugh.
I thought to myself, What are we do-
ing here? As adolescents, we are so
impatient to grow up that sometimes
we dont appreciate the pure joy and
simplicity of life. While it is important
to set goals and pursue them, it is even
more important to step back once in a
while and enjoy life.
So here we are at the end of our
high school careers, our teachers have
done all that they can do to prepare us
for life beyond DHS, whatever that
may be. They have given us a key to a
door which can lead almost anywhere
we want what we do when we walk
through the door is entirely up to us.

M
usic has always been an outlet for me, something that has just always been consistent in my crazy
schedule. Although, I am not planning on majoring in music, I know that I could not get through
college without staying involved with music somehow. It is a part of my life, that will not be affected by
the transition from high school to college, and I am certain of that.
R
eceiving a stand-
ing ovation from an
audience during my nal
concert at Duxbury will be a
memory that I will hold for
the rest of my life.
M
usichas been an out-
let in difcult times, and it
has given me a sense of fulll-
ment in moments when life has
seemed trying. Music has given
me a sense of purpose and a
pure, unadulterated happiness.
A
s I look back at the past
four years, I have real-
ized what an amazing music
program Duxbury has and how
much it has inuenced my life.
I can only hope future musi-
cians will get the same great
experience as I have playing for
Duxbury.
M
y music with DHS
is over, but my love
of music will not end here.
As the years go on I hope
to continue for music to
impact me. If its just a
song on a radio or listening
to a marching band in the
street, I will remember when
I was a part of something so
special. Thank you so much
Duxbury Music Department
for making such an impact
in my high school career. I
will remember what I have
learned and experienced
with music for the rest of
my life.
B
eing a musician has
taught me more than
just notes and key signa-
tures. I have learned and
improved core values like
diligence and concentration,
and had a lot of memorable
experiences along the way.
This is the class that matter
to me!
M
usic is my safe-haven
away from a hectic
life. It allows me to truly
be myself. Some people
may take out their anger
and frustration in athletics;
however my alternative is
to play my heart out. Music
truly is a blessing.

Duxbury Music Promoters
Congratulates The Graduating Class of 2010
We are especially proud of all the music students for their outstanding musical contributions.
The mission of the Duxbury Music Promoters is to encourage, promote, and support the musical
education of students in the Duxbury Music Program.
- Senior Class of 2010 -
M
usic has become such
an integral part of
my life and Im eternally
grateful for all that Duxbury
Music has meant to me.
Its why I am going into
college as music major. I
am strongly considering
music education because I
want more kids to be able
to experience music and life
the way I have.
I
was lucky enough to join
the program and be part
of something special for
four years. Facing my fears
and auditioning for band
freshman year was the best
decision I could have ever
made.
I
have learned that no successes come without hard work. The individual work ethic and time
spent practicing by each individual is reected in how the group plays overall. Unlike a sports
team, where individuals can be singled out and not allowed to play in an important game, everyone
in the group contributes to the music we perform. Every person in this group, from rst chair to last,
contributes to the awards we win and the places we are invited to play. We can only be successful
when every player is able to play to the best of their ability and have their sound heard. The sound
of an orchestra is much more than the sum of its parts.
I
now teach ute lessons to
middle school students.
Every lesson brings me
full circle back to where
I began as a ute player,
which shows me how far I
have come.
T
he music department is
the thing that I am go-
ing to miss the most about
High School.
U
nlike many seniors
who choose to ll their
schedules with extra gyms,
I prefer to replace mine
with Wind Ensemble and
Chamber Singers. When
my friends ask me are you
mad, you could take another
gym or ceramics? I just
describe the amazing large
explosion of sound that I
heard when I played my rst
note on the Carnegie Hall
stage. There is no compari-
son.
S
tudentsplaying experi-
ences in Duxbury has
set them up for success in
whatever they choose to do.
I
feel so fortunate to be
part of a program unri-
valed in the state, or even
country, and every minute
of my nal year holds more
importance as the clock
ticks down. I will miss the
Duxbury music programs
more than anything else in
high school.
I
went from someone who
knew a few pop tunes from
the radio to someone who can
harmonize with almost any note
given to him. I sincerely thank
the music program at Duxbury
High School for opening my
eyes to the beauty that is music.
I
will never forget my band
experiences, and when
I look back on them in the
future I know I will always
have a smile on my face
from the joy I shared play-
ing beautiful music.
T
hroughout the rest of my
life I want to be a leader
no matter what I do and it
was partially my leadership
role in the band that helped
me realize this. Band has
taught me accountability.
This is a lesson I will use
the rest of my life that I
learned rst hand in band.
In everything I do I try to be
accountable for my actions
and to do everything to the
best of my ability?

By Carter Miller
H
ello graduating class of
2010, parents, faculty and
administrators. I am truly
grateful to be standing here before
all of you today. I have been thinking
about this day for the past few months
and there is something I want you to
think about.
What is home? Home, to me, means
the place where people show compas-
sion and unconditional love for each
other.
In April 2008 my father walked out
on my family. He left us with no house,
no money, nowhere to go. He told me
the day he left, If you werent a man
before today, you certainly are one
now. I just thought to myself, How
is a sophomore in high school able to
take care of a family of four?
The next few months were diff-
cult. We moved to Ocean View, Dela-
ware, where my grandparents took us
in. Everyone asked why I was moving,
and I couldnt tell them, because I felt
embarrassed and ashamed about what
had happened. I thought to myself the
day I was leaving, Well, this life was
too good to be true. I had only been
here for two years, but it already felt
like home.
At most of the schools my brother
and I attended, we spent most of our
lunches sitting by ourselves in the caf-
eteria, with no one else to talk to. We
only had each other. When we didnt
have lunch scheduled together, we
would go to the library to sit and wait
for it to be over.
We ended up leaving Delaware
at the end of September in 2008, and
moving back to our original hometown
of Branford, Conn. We spent the next
few months there, until on Dec.1, 2008
my mom woke me up at three in the
morning and told me that my dad had
just died in a drunk driving accident.
My heart stopped. Life couldnt get
worse. I took a look back at the past
eight months and wondered what I did
to deserve this. My whole life was be-
ing taken away, one piece at a time. My
family and I decided to move back to
Duxbury to fnish high school, because
it was the one place where I felt most at
home. Heres why.
My brother and I have moved
eight times, and I am sure that all my
classmates remember the frst day we
walked into DMS on that cold Janu-
ary morning in 2006. We always talk
about that day, because we felt like
movie stars. Everyone came to us ask-
ing who we were? Where were we
from? There was an endless number of
questions throughout that day. Pat and
I absolutely loved it. You all showed so
much love and generosity towards us;
we were truly overwhelmed by your
compassion.
I told you this story because I want-
ed to say thank you to you guys. You
guys made this place home to me and
I am forever grateful to have met you
and shared experiences with all of you,
because you gave me back my life.
And parents, I want to say some-
thing to all of you. You have done an
amazing job raising these kids. Ive
been to nine different schools, and I
have met a lot of kids, and your kids
are some of the most genuine, lov-
ing, intelligent, compassionate kids I
have ever met. If it werent for them,
I would have never come back. You
parents should be very proud of your-
selves for the work you have done, and
because of the homes you have created
here, I know that my classmates will do
something great with their lives when
they leave here.
I want to say thank you to my mom
and family members. You have done
a great job of raising me and you have
sacrifced a lot for my brother, sister,
and me.
I want to leave all of you with a
saying that was on my graduation an-
nouncement.
Remember when you go into the
world keep your eyes and ears wide
open. Be kind. Love one another and
take care of each other. Tell the truth.
Always do your best. Listen to the big
people and the little people. Explore
paths and have fun. Know that you are
loved like crazy. Give thanks for all
of your blessings. Above all else, love
and you will do wonderful things in the
world.
My hope for all of you is that you
go forward into the best life you can
have but that you never forget where
you come from this is home.
Duxbury is home
I told you this story because I
wanted to say thank you to you

F
amily, friends, Class of 2010
What can I talk to you
about today? Can I stand in
front of you and pass on life changing
wisdom and advice? I dont think so. I
have only been here for 18 years, Im
still trying to get any bits of advice I
can. Im not qualifed to dole them out
yet. Any wisdom I can quote to you
comes from easily recognizable songs,
movies, or speeches, so thats out.
I could compare our time spent at
DHS to something profound, or use
some popular cultural allusion to ex-
plain what going into the real world
is like. But how many of you want to
sit here and listen to me talk about Star
Wars? Exactly.
I could reminisce. I could remind
you of the thousands of laughs youve
had here. I could tell you of that time
that you best friend did the thing that
was so funny and then the other thing
happened, and then you couldnt stand,
because you were laughing so hard.
You each have a that time that youre
probably thinking of right now. Unfor-
tunately, I dont have enough time to
traverse the hundred stories you all
want to hear, so reminding you of the
hilarious is out.
I could challenge you. I could ask
you to remember the important les-
sons youve manage to scrape together
over the last four years. And Im not
talking about the school lessons. Im
talking about those real life lessons
you learned, the ones youre supposed
to learn in kindergarten. Like how
to share, or watch a friends back, or
show responsibility. But who wants to
be reminded of responsibility on a day
like this?
I could go in the other direction
too, and challenge you with the fu-
ture. I could talk about how the future
is yours for the taking. How you are
the next generation of leaders, heal-
ers, builders. I could challenge you to
take advantage of your future, to build
the life you want, to never give up, or
to make the future a better place than
when you found it.
I could follow the example of so
many of our parents and talk about how
that same future isnt in such a great
shape right now. I could talk about all
the things that are wrong with the world:
wars, collapsing economy, infation,
rising cost of health care, joblessness,
unstoppable oil spills in short all that
jazz about which they love to say Oh
boy when youre grown up youre go-
ing to have to deal with all this stuff
that we messed up. I could challenge
you to not be like them, to never say I
messed this up, here, you fx it, but to
instead to be the ones that do fx it. But
this is our graduation day. Weve been
working hard for four years. I think we
can take one day off before we get to
work on that, cant we?
So, how about something more
pleasant? I could remind you of the
beauty of your surroundings. I could
talk about how lucky we all were to
grow up in Duxbury; where the most
exciting thing in the police log is a
squirrel in someones house; where its
safe to walk the streets with out fear of
being mugged; where the only weap-
ons brought to school are the hammers
and nails used to build prom; where if
you were to run into trouble, however
unlikely, you know everyone anyway
and all you would have to do to get
help is ask the nearest stranger. But
you all know this. After all weve lived
here eighteen years. What could I tell
you about your home town that you
dont already know? Ill move on to
my next topic.
But I dont have any more topics.
Ive canceled out anything I could think
of to talk about. I havent been able to
remind you any of the things normally
told at graduation speeches. So I guess
what you get from me is what you can
make. Youre all intelligent people. I
should know. Ive spent the last four
years with you, right? Im sure you can
all think of something I should say up
here. Something you really want me to
talk about. Something thats important
to you. Something about the last four
years that youll take with you for the
rest of your life.
Now just take a minute to say it to
yourself.
Now take a minute to never, ever
forget it.
Thank you.

Superintendent of SchoolS
F
amilies, friends, faculty and
staff, members of the School
Committee and our graduat-
ing seniors, it is my distinct honor to
have the opportunity to address you
today. On this long anticipated day for
our seniors it is a pleasure to have you
all with us. Graduation day is about our
students and their accomplishments
and this afternoon Id like to take a
few moments to direct some thoughts
I have to you our Class of 2010.
Today marks for you and your
family a signifcant milestone. This is
a day for celebration for both you and
your families. Today you have accom-
plished a great task in having met all
the requirements and expectations set
forth by the Commonwealth of Mas-
sachusetts and the Duxbury Public
Schools. You should be proud of this
accomplishment and walk tall today as
you receive your diplomas.
As you look back over the past
thirteen years and face the end of
your time here in the Duxbury Public
Schools, I also want to remind you of
another term used for graduation. This
terms is commencement. Websters
dictionary defnes to commence in the
following way: to have or make a be-
ginning. A new start. As I have thought
about this fact, I have also spent time
refecting on what I might say to you
today that would beneft you as you
end this part of your life and move
forward today into new challenges and
experiences. In looking back over my
own journey and as I too commence
into a new beginning; I came to three
messages Id like to share as my wish
for you. These are:
Find something in which to be
passionate.
Be open to new challenges.
Find and know your heroes.
Why these three messages? I came
to these because I believe they are mes-
sages that I have found have directed
me in my life. The frst, fnd some-
thing in which to be passionate. Be-
ing passionate about something means
to be consumed by it. To never tire of
it, but to be excited to continue to pur-
sue it totally and completely. In my life
I have been fortunate to fnd my pas-
sion in you and the education of young
people. You may or may not fnd pas-
sion in your lifes work but rather in
some other area of your life such as
a sport, an area of the arts, volunteer-
ism or civic work. However, no mat-
ter where this passion is for you, you
will fnd this passion will be fulflling
and further defne you as a person. To
quote the comedian Bill Cosby: Any-
one can dabble, but once youve made
that commitment, your blood has that
particular thing in it, and its very hard
for people to stop you.
My second wish for you is that
you will always be open to new chal-
lenges. Never shortchange yourself
or your abilities. When an opportu-
nity that you never expected presents
itself, dont immediately dismiss it.
Look to the positive and assess why
you could meet this challenge and go
beyond what you expected of yourself.
New challenges and experiences help
to further defne us. Be open to these.
A quote from Mark Twain expresses
it best: Twenty years from now, you
will be more disappointed by the things
you didnt do that the ones you did.
So throw off the bowlines. Sail away
from the safe harbor. Catch the trade
winds in your sails. Explore. Dream.
Discover. I believe you will never be
disappointed in what you learn and ex-
perience by taking the challenges that
will present themselves to you.
My fnal message is to fnd your
heroes. Now my three-year-old grand-
son would say that heroes always wear
a cape, have super powers, drive spe-
cial cars, and in one case can actually
throw out a spiders web. You and
I both know that this is not the case.
Heroes are those people who you meet
everyday, whose personality and char-
acteristics are those that you would
most like to emulate. These are the
people that you look up to and aspire
to be like. For me, my hero has always
been my dad because he is someone
who always thirsted for knowledge.
He has always pushed himself to learn
new things and challenged himself to
the next level. As my dad approaches
his 90th birthday this August, he can
be found reading a new book on his
Kindle, checking his e-mails on his
iTouch and doing his banking on his
laptop. He doesnt dismiss the changes
in todays world but embraces them.
Dad is also someone who strives to see
the positive and even in diffcult times,
his view of the positive is always evi-
dent in all he does. These are some of
the reasons why he continues to be my
hero and someone that I continuously
strive to mirror in all I do. I hope that
each of you will also look at those
around you, identify your heroes and
then strive to live your lives demon-
strating the qualities you so admire in
them. They wont have capes and spe-
cial powers, but their impact on you
will last a lifetime.
So today, as you graduate, you are
also starting a new beginning. I hope
that you will at some point remember
these messages as you continue on
your journey. They are given to you
from someone who has had the privi-
lege of watching you grow and reach
this memorable day in your lives. As
you now prepare to leave the Duxbury
Public Schools one last time, I want
to send you off with the same poem I
read when you left Alden.
[See facing page. Ed.]
Class of 2010, I thank you for being
part of my life. I wish you all the best
in the years ahead and much success
on your journey. Congratulations!

You walk away
Without looking back,
Walk away
Into your summer
world
Into buttercup suns
And shouts
And fenceless felds
Into the future.
Walk away without
Turning to see
That I am watching you
Watching with tears
And arms
Aching to hold you
back,
And with a silent cry
Calling to you ...
Remember! Remem-
ber!
How we read of
Judging fairly,
How we wrote of
Finding beauty even
here
Outside the windowed
walls
How we talked of shar-
ing
How we sang of peace.
Walk away
But remember
Through the grass
green
Gates of Summer
Into the storm cloud
Shapes of shadows ...
Remember that once,
For what you were
And what you would
become
I loved you.

Class of 2010
By catherine pattinSon
claSS of 2010 Salutatorian
H
ello Class of 2010, and
thank you to all of the fam-
ily and friends who are here
to celebrate this day with us.
Today I want to question something
that we did every day in high school.
Something that I admit I always did.
I believed day in and day out that the
thousands of numbers and letters that
I accumulated in my academic record
determined how smart I was; that the
difference of a few points meant some-
thing extremely signifcant about my
potential; that blowing one test might
mean I was suddenly less intelligent.
I would compare test grades, term
grades, scores on papers, just like ev-
eryone else, trying to fgure out where I
ft in on the intelligence scale. I thought
that intelligence could be measured,
everyone could be ordered according
to how smart he or she was and then
that hierarchy determined who would
succeed and be happy in life.
But as Ive grown up, I realized
defning intelligence is so much more
complicated than that. Funny how
things get more confusing as we get
older.
In high school, we label and catego-
rize ourselves in terms of other people
constantly, without even knowing it.
We create these self-fulflling prophe-
cies regarding our intellectual self
worth because of the constant compari-
son that we face. We pack everyone in
a box because quantitative measures of
grading have taught us to do so.
What does it mean to be smart?
Why is the student who got the perfect
score on the chemistry test any more
intelligent than the one who sits behind
him and got an 85? Hes more intelli-
gent because we say he is. But is he?
In all of our years at school it was
never uncommon to talk about how
smart people were in the context of
grades. Its just natural. Of course he
scored over a hundred on the hardest
pre-calc test known to humankind.
Hes wicked smart; or obviously shes
a genius. She gets As in everything.
As college admission deadlines drew
closer the most important three num-
bers became our grade point averages,
followed closely by the four digits of
our SAT scores.
And we would talk about intel-
ligence as if it were a number on a
thermometer, as if there was a way we
could sum up all of our intellectual ca-
pabilities. Grades meant a great deal
to us, because it was the only concrete
way we could rank ourselves against
our peers, even though at times we pre-
tended not to care. In our subconscious
we built intelligence hierarchies. In
retrospect, however convenient such
grade comparing might be, numbers
and letters mean very little in the larger
context of intelligence as a whole.
So if there is only one thing I can
say to you today, its that we have
made a mistake in even thinking that
there was only one way to be smart.
Intelligence is way more elusive than
SAT scores and GPAs. I think in the
backs of all of our minds we know it is
a mistake, but in the high school envi-
ronment in which each of us is evaluat-
ed the same way every day, it is almost
irresistible to measure our intelligence
by the numbers.
But today we are going to move
on from all that. The question of am
I smart? is going to change to, how
am I smart?
Because intelligence is so much
more than the one scale I once thought
it was. Intelligence is practical. Think
of that person who is a natural problem
solver, who relies on logic and expe-
rience with the world, not knowledge
memorized from a textbook.
Intelligence is artistic. Think of that
person who can craft beauty or perform
before hundreds of people with impec-
cable composure and grace.
Intelligence is creative. Think of
that person who always interprets life a
little bit differently and turns your view
upside down.
Intelligence is emotional. Think of
that person who is always the mediator
and seems to have ESP for what you
are feeling.
Intelligence is verbal. Think of that
person who can write and speak with
eloquence that leaves you hanging on
every word.
The list goes on. I dont think I can
capture all the types of intelligence that
sit before me.
Admit it. We are a pretty talented,
hardworking and intelligent group.
Musicians, doctors, actors, peacemak-
ers, entrepreneurs, writers, mediators,
artists, therapists, leaders you are all
here.
We all have so much and such var-
ied intelligence. Now its our job, our
duty to use it. Enough of making com-
parisons with all the stale metersticks
of success. Enough of thinking that
black and white numbers can defne
how smart we are.
Look around you Class of
2010. What do you see? I see 264 in-
telligent individuals who all have the
potential to do something with their
aptitude. I see 264 students leaving the
confnes of high school to pursue what
they are truly good at, and hopefully
what they truly love.
Let us all from this moment agree
that we are people complex, smart
people, each of us with something dif-
ferent to contribute, each with a differ-
ent perspective, and each with a differ-
ent specialized intelligence.
The only mistake we can make
with the intelligence we have is not to
use it.
