Legendary bassist brings the funk to jazz festival nazareth

Placed strategically between slabs of bone-crushing funk-rock on Bootsy Collins latest album, Tha Funk Capital of the World, are samples of Jimi Hendrix being interviewed. One comment, in particular, will stand out for his fans who are more familiar with his guitar histrionics than his apparent belief in extraterrestrial life. Lets pretend theres a flying saucer coming down, Hendrix says on the track, Mirrors Tell Lies. Instead of checking it out, people want to shoot it down. They should try and get into it, see what its really about. Hendrixs open-mindedness really shouldnt come as a big surprise when you consider his wizardry and how he singlehandedly redefined the guitars sound. And given that Collins believes hes from another world, his decision to use those quotes makes sense. In fact, George Clinton, who spoke about science fiction and Afro-futurism at the British Library in London last month, once told me he and Bootsy (who played in Clintons Parliament Funkadelic band) had an encounter in Mississauga so I definitely believe theyre here. I heard Jimi alluding to extra-terrestrial life on a few songs, but I wasnt aware he was deep into it, Collins tells me in a soft midwestern lilt from Cincinnati. But, you know, its not a surprise to me.

The legendary funk bassist, who brings his 13-strong army to the jazz festival Saturday, says he unearthed the quote while working on a Hendrix project last year. The Hendrix family had asked me to narrate (the documentary) Jimi Hendrix Voodoo Child (thats part of the West Coast Seattle Boy box set) so I got the chance to read letters and postcards that Jimi had written, the life-

long Hendrix fan says. I was recording my album at the same time and I felt I really needed to include some of this stuff so I asked for their permission and his sister said, Of course! and let me pick whatever I wanted. The man fondly known as Bootzilla says that even though Jimi and I never met, I really feel weve been connected for a long time. Jimi was the cat! says the down-to-earth Collins whose first group, The Pacesetters, served as James Browns back-up band from 69 to 71. His music speaks for itself, its just amazing. And as far as expressing his soul and his look, he just brought it! On Tha Funk Capital of the World, Collins brings the funk with the help of more than a dozen guests.

These include Public Enemys Chuck D, the prominent African-American cultural critic Cornel West, the Rev. Al Sharpton, Snoop Dogg, soul legend Bobby Womack and acclaimed banjo player Bela Fleck. In an interview, Chuck D told me, What Hendrix is to the guitar, Mr. Boots is to the bass. Hands down! I think the unspoken genius of Bootsy is his humble approach to getting artists motivated and together as one. Thats a unique gift. Some critics have said the disc is so crowded with guests it feels like the colourful bassist is a guest himself. Collins bristles when I raise this. This record isnt about me, its bigger than me, he says. I dont care that some

critics are missing the point. If Id listened to the critics back in the day, I wouldnt be playing what I play. Back then, they said stuff like, You cant play bass like that! and You cant wear clothes like that! I want to bring people together and get em excited and do it in a way that really moves them, Collins adds. Music today is all about the paper god and I cant put my trust in that god. I put my trust in what people need and what they need is love. And someones gotta bring it.
