This CD-ROM contains 72 Standards and Advisory Leaflets, laying out the Set of Rules and Standards of the DWA, which are currently available in English. Our intention is to provide for the public of English speaking specialists a picture of how, in Germany, technical standards on technicalscientific subjects are elaborated and combined into a common set of rules and standards. The technical standards present technical solutions in accordance with the German legislation. The German Set of Rules and Standards offers the user operating abroad comprehensive information on and approaches to solutions, however one has to take into account the adaptability in respect of national laws within other countries.

Pressure drainage is a special drainage process which, under certain circumstances, is significantly more economic than a gravity sewer system. Compared with other drainage processes the investments can be considerably lower. In cost-comparison calculations all follow-on
costs for depreciation, rate of interest, operation and preventative maintenance are to be incorporated. The Standard, along with the usual references to standards and definitions, contains the detailed system description of a pressure sewerage system. Questions about bylaws are covered as well as the planning of engineering implementation and the operation of pressure sewerage systems. Part 2 of the Standard supplements EN 1671 and applies only together with this standard specification. It is in particular directed at planners, system suppliers, authorities, operators and construction companies.

EN 1091 lays down the requirements on the performance of vacuum sewerage systems for the collection and discharge of wastewater independent of the materials employed. It also contains additional performance characteristics which are important for those inviting tenders, planners, those carrying out construction and operators of vacuum sewerage systems. Standard DWA-A 116-1E supplements the standard specification in order to cover the necessary national [German] requirements. It helps the planning engineer to recognize and use creatively the margins existing in EN 1091. Through the joint application of EN 1091 and DWA-A 116-1E a qualitatively high quality planning and implementation of the construction is achieved. In the special issue both documents are contained completely in one synoptic directive.

EN 1671, in addition to special requirements on the products to be employed, contains the general requirements placed on the performance of pressure sewerage systems as well as specifications for testing. Standard DWA-A 116-2E supplements the standard specification in order to cover necessary national [German] contents. It assists the planning engineer in recognising and using creatively the margins existing in EN 1671. In the joint publication both sets of technical rules are printed completely in one synoptic directive, i. e. the text passages belonging to each breakdown point are shown one after the other. Through the joint application of EN 1671 and DWAA 116-2E a qualitatively high level of planning and execution of construction work is achieved.

The instructions regulate the service activities and contain details on organisation, responsibility and accountability of employees. In addition they contain rules for action in operation and avoidance of accidents and hazards to health. The respective minimum contents for service and operating instructions are listed in the individual parts of this series of standards. For exemplification they are supplemented by model texts. Due to the in part very different local constraints, the operator has to clarify which parts can be taken over or, if required, modified. Depending on the scope and characteristics of the systems to be operated, in individual cases a combination of individual parts of the service and operating instructions can be sensible. With this revision the integration into quality and environmental management systems and the increase in significance of cost aspects have been taken into account.

With this Advisory Leaflet the operators of sewerage systems are given an overview of the currently practised strategies for the rehabilitation of drainage systems outside buildings. The strategies listed, area-related strategy, multi-sector, condition strategy, asset value strategy, function-related strategy and fire brigade strategy are assessed with regard to suitability and practice. Statements are to be seen as a snapshot, which corresponds with the current status of the framework conditions and represent a majority opinion. It is therefore absolutely necessary to continue to match the considerations and conclusions presented with market development and the situation with regard to legislation. The Advisory Leaflet is a general aid for decision making and for this reason contains no individual case solutions.

Measurement of the Oxygen Transfer in Activated Sludge Aeration Tanks with Clean Water and in Mixed Liquor
June 1996, 54 pages, DIN A4, ISBN 978-3-934984-50-9 * 26,50
With the activated sludge process a sufficient oxygen concentration is a fundamental prerequisite for an effective treatment of wastewater. In addition, the oxygen requirement is subject to variations due to changes of loading, temperature, the concentration of activated sludge and other parameters. The installations for the oxygen transfer must therefore be so designed that, on one hand, peak requirements can be covered, on the other, with low loading, not too much oxygen is fed to the system. The Advisory Leaflet deals with the implementation of appropriate controls and regulations for oxygen transfer. Objective is to give the user an aid with the selection of a suitable control concept, oxygen transfer and information on the mechanical engineering equipment with the activated sludge process.
Pipelines are to be found in all areas of the technical equipment of wastewater treatment plants. They are subject to numerous loadings due to forces (static and dynamic), corrosion (caused by the medium and/or the environment), abrasion, erosion, temperature (heat, cold) etc. The choice of the pipe materials and the dimensioning of the pipelines with regard to diameter and wall thickness require a high degree of specialist knowledge, above all with regard to types of loading, the material characteristics, the possibilities for working and, not the least, the numerous standard specifications and regulations associated with these areas. Using the Advisory Leaflet, planners, those requesting tenders and those responsible for decision making are to be given an aid for the achievement of technical and economical solutions. In many cases proven solutions can be recommended, in other cases attention must be drawn to technical documents and regulations, in order to develop correct standards for the requesting of tenders and the implementation in plant construction.

October 1989, 23 pages, DIN A4 * 11,50
The method of drying sewage sludge is increasingly used in practice as a means of reconditioning sludge prior to disposal. The Advisory leaflet presents a summary of the state of the art and allows both, the general introduction to this topic and also further consideration of the system. The aim is to ease access to sewage sludge drying processes for the planner and operator of sewage sludge treatment plants. Described are the basic procedural principles and the drying processes that have proven successful in practice. The feasibilities and problems of individual drying systems are dealt with further so that an appropriate and well founded decision for or against the employment of drying plants will be supported and the possible selection of a drying system facilitated on a good ground.

The case studies introduced describe possibilities of avoidance, restorage, usage, storage in water bodies and on land as well as reconditioning, recycling and finally disposal of dredged material from inland water bodies which are implemented in practice. Special focus was put on dredged material from water bodies of the the German Federal states and municipalities as exemplified with the removal of sludge from ponds, lakes and storage reservoirs. In respect of storage places for dredged material, gravel pits or pits of quarrying sites, flushing fields and depositories still cover a significant portion. The reuse in the manufacture of clinker or swelling clay/pellets is still being investigated and developed and also mentioned in this Advisory leaflet as examples.

the retention of colloids and dissolved molecules and ions, membrane processes allow for customized and extensive treatment of industrial process and wastewater, and if applicable, the recovery of resources from the treated water. Often, only the implementation of membrane technology provides the opportunity for economic water circulation or water reuse. The topics consist of several parts. Part 1 deals with membrane processes per se, i.e. the application of this process step in the separation of undissolved, colloidal or dissolved matter. Part 2 describes the membrane bioreactor processes. Thereby, the emphasis is on the process unit, consisting of the biological degradation in the aeration tank and the separation of the biomass by means of membranes. Details are given, in particular, on the requirements and specifics of membrane bioreactors in contrast to conventional activated sludge processes.
