Charity catwalk success

NestoN Royal British Legion was the venue for the sell-out Age UK Charity Fashion show recently. Debbi Porritt, of Age UK Heswall said: A big thank you to Dawn Rochford and Maria Gattrell at Barclays Bank, Heswall whose support made it possible to raise 1,894 on the night and Barclays Bank has kindly agreed to match the first 1,500 raised with a further donation of 1,500, giving a grand total of 3,394. Outfits were modelled by Age UK staff and volunteers with ages ranging between eight years old and 80. Debbie Moran of Age UK Neston said:said: A great big thank you to Neston British Legion, DJ Steve OConnor; Wirral businesses who donated raffle prizes and all our wonderful volunteers. Legion celebrates 90 years

NestoN Royal British Legion is 90 years old this year. It started in Comrades Field behind the Parish Church then moved to its present site in Chester Road. over the years it has supported exeservicemen and their families in the area and is still supporting people who have served in modern day conflicts such as the Falklands, Iran and Afghanistan. In order to boost the Poppy Appeal fund and celebrate the 90 years, there will be an entertainment evening on Friday 1st July at 7.30pm with two acts, a short bingo and a raffle. on 10th July there will be a parade through the village, leaving the British Legion at 10.30am, to attend a service at Neston Parish Church at 10.45am. Neston slimmers success in weight loss challenge!

A GRoUP of slimmers from Neston are celebrating losing an incredible 86 stones as part of a community weight loss challenge. the slimmers, who attend the Dee scout Centre slimming World group on Burton Road in Little Neston, joined the clubs 12-week Lets Beat obesity together weight loss challenge in February and theyre not just stones lighter, theyre healthier and happier too. slimming World launched the Lets Beat It together challenge in Neston to get people taking action to improve their weight and health and that of their families and loved ones. It also aimed to show that losing as little as 5-10% body weight in 12 weeks can have huge benefits on health and wellbeing. Jayne Williams, slimming World Consultant for the Dee scout Centre group, has been delighted with the results: Lets Beat obesity together has had a huge impact on our group and on Neston as a whole. We encouraged people in the local community to lose weight by making small changes to the way they shop, cook and eat and by becoming more active. the response has been brilliant. We welcomed 79 new members during the 12-week campaign. As a group weve lost a record breaking total of almost 86 stones well worth celebrating, which is just what we plan to do! healthier, happier future for them too! the Neston group runs every Wednesday at 9.30am, 5pm or 7pm at Dee scout Centre, Burton Road, Little Neston. Young Hitler wanted for film role!

NestoN film maker James Chalmers is looking for a young man to play a 20-year-old Adolf Hitler! this is a non-speaking role and could be played by someone with little or no acting experience. But the actor has to be small in stature with medium length dark hair. In 1912 Adolf Hitler came to stay in Liverpool with his half brother Alois and his wife Bridget. Bridget recalls the visit in her memoirs which were first published in 1979 by Neston journalist Michael Unger. A new edition, entitled the Hitlers of Liverpool, also by Michael Unger, has just been published. The film is to be a fictional story around both the publication of the second edition of the book and Hitlers stay on Merseyside, an intriguing tale with a supernatural twist. James has an international reputation as a writer and film maker. He recently won a top award in America for his stage play Prelude to Macbeth. His film version, using several Wirral locations such as Birkenhead Priory and shotwick Church, received a four star award at this years International Film Festival held by the IAC Film and Video Institute. Dont they scrub up well!

It was best suits, fabulous dresses and glitzy tiaras as students from year 11 arrived for the annual Neston High school Prom in limos, vintage cars and other modes of transport. A crowd of several hundred family and friends stood in the evening sunshine to welcome the students. on arrival students walked the red carpet into the event cheered by members of staff. Headteacher, steven Dool said, this is a very special occasion in our school calendar. It is organised by members of year 11 who form a Prom Committee and I congratulate them all on a spectacular event this year which was thoroughly enjoyed by students and staff alike.

Heartless thieves steal historic school bell

tHe bell from the tower at Neston Primary school, Burton Road was stolen sometime over the Bank Holiday weekend. the bell, which has been on the site for over 100 years, was presumably taken for its scrap value. thieves also removed the lead from the bell tower and school roof which, following the heavy rain over the weekend, resulted in extensive damage being caused to the classrooms below. A very large number of roof tiles were also damaged during the theft and the cost of repairs will be several thousand pounds. Members of staff went into school during the half-term holiday and spent two days clearing up the damaged caused by the water, which poured into the classrooms. Many displays, childrens work, carpets and computers were ruined. Headteacher Rob Golding said; Having recently celebrated the 105th birthday of the school, it feels as though for every one step forward, we are knocked two steps back. the bell tower is not only a symbol of our school, but a popular landmark for the residents of Neston. to see it so badly damaged, really does leave me depressed and frustrated. I am sure the vast majority of residents will share our sadness. Unfortunately, the insurance policy used by Cheshire schools does not cover them for such acts of vandalism and theft - therefore the school will have to find the several thousand pounds needed for the repairs. I am uncertain of where I will be able to find the money to pay for the repairs - I presume that will be of no concern to the thieves. If anyone does have any information, I would be grateful if they would call the police on 0845 458 0000 . once the roof has been repaired, we plan to organise some fund-raising events to replace the bell and help towards the costs of repairs. If there are any companies or individuals who would like to help please get in touch

Staff at Sainsburys have done their bit to help raise money for the repairs, dressing up as pupils, teachers, dinner ladies etc. There is collection buckets at the end of the tills and some staff have also volunteered to help with the school car wash day.
