With Luhmann, the form patterns of ritual repetition and stabilization are entwined with compression of form. Repetition combines the idea of linear progression with that of a cyclical return indicating that innovation too is a recursive process. In other words, the context of feedback, of recursive self-reference, suggests that art is both determined and unpredictable, a mode of activity that incorporates paradox itself.

The Latin repetere [from re- + petere, from petere, to go toward, seek, from Indo-European root pet-, to rush, fly] means to seek again.
