According to Wikipedia - the free online encyclopaedia - the act of being hospitable is the reception and entertainment of guests, visitors or strangers with liberality and goodwill. In general, the food and hospitality industry in South Africa refers to any position of service dealing largely with tourism. Therefore, you'll regularly find that the food and hospitality industry and the travel and tourism industry overlap.

South Africa's food and hospitality - Pastry Chef industry has experienced exceptional growth over the past five years. The hotel industry offers a variety of appealing and rewarding career opportunities. It is evident that promotion is instantaneous for high achievers within this industry. Hotel managers have thorough knowledge of the establishment at which they are employed. This is a key factor in running a hotel as a profitable business. In larger hotels a team of area managers works below a general manager. However - in a smaller hotel - one or two managers oversee all management tasks. The hotel food and beverage manager maintains the service standards of the hotel's restaurant, bar and function venue; at the most profitable and highest possible level. This position requires one to be inventive and creative in devising ways to attract potential customers to the hotel. The hotel porter has the job of transporting guests' luggage to their rooms. One should never underestimate a porter as they often possess a wealth of information about things like the best places to shop and where to book the cheapest theatre tickets. The hotel receptionist projects the image of the hotel; greeting and receiving the guests as they arrive at the reception. The receptionist usually works shifts which - depending on the size of the hotel - often include working alternate night shifts. A room's division manager organises and supervises all the activities of the hotel's front office. Their main obligation is to ensure that room occupancy levels are maintained at the highest of levels. Ensuring guest satisfaction and that each day runs smoothly are key areas of work for the room's division manager

A chef is not unlike an artist and therefore it takes an artistic flair as well as ability and skill to fulfil the job requirements. The following career titles are common to the hotel, restaurant and catering industries. A chef de cuisine has a vision for the establishment at which they are employed. A food technologist studies the components of food substances and the way in which these substances are affected by hot and cold temperatures. They research various cooking processes and preservation techniques. Food technologists are constantly working at developing new products. A career in health inspection requires one to have an interest in food and hygiene as well as being rooted in the field of medicine. A health inspectorcritically analyses an establishment which supplies food to the public; with regards to the smoking, health and hygiene regulations. A food service manager is responsible for training staff, supervising the food making process and ensuring the quality of the food. Part of your daily tasks would be ordering, storing and issuing stock; planning the food budget and ensuring that meals are prepared punctually. Other jobs working with meat On receiving carcasses from an abattoir; a meat cutting technician is responsible for cutting; preparing and packaging of the meat. A meat examiner works in an abattoir monitoring the slaughter process and ensuring that the highest possible level of hygiene is maintained within the establishment. They assist a meat inspector in the inspection of meat according to the standards set by our country's law. Other jobs in food and hospitality A confectioner has a creative flair for baking and should be able to create an original line of intricately decorated confectionary. A home economist aims educate people in ways to use available resources to improve their life styles. Their teachings also focus on ways to avoid pollution and environmental devastation.
