BUS 242 Management

Instructor: Janice Hadfield (402)466-4774 janice.hadfield@doane.edu Course Description: This course is an introduction to the internal organization and the structure and executive functions in the business enterprise and other goal-directed institutions. TEXT: Management, 9th ed., Stephen P. Robbins and Mary Coulter, Prentice Hall, 2007. Learning Objectives - Students will: 1. Develop a general understanding of management yesterday and today. 2. Learn the impact of culture and environment on the success of an organization and the managers role in the context of organizational culture. 3. Develop a sense of social responsibility and managerial ethics. 4. Learn the foundations of planning and develop an awareness of tools and techniques for planning. 5. Learn common organizational designs and how to define and describe organizational structure. 6. Explore theories of leadership and the managers role in the development of groups and teams and motivating employees. 7. Define control, understand the control process, and build an awareness of tools used for controlling organizational performance. For this course, students will complete a total of four assignments and will have two weeks to complete each assignment. Learning activities will include reading the text and supplemental materials provided by the instructor, responding in writing to questions posed by the instructor, completing a variety of self-assessment instruments and reporting the results, and participating in interactive on-line exercises and scenarios. Each completed assignment will be e-mailed to the instructor no later than the due date listed below. Upon receipt of a completed assignment, the next assignment will be e-mailed to the student. Students may submit assignments earlier than the due date. Assignment #1
We will begin the first assignment with chapter 1, Introduction to Management and Organizations, and answer these questions: Who are managers? What is management? What do managers do? What is an organization and how is the concept of organization changing? We will then move to chapter 2, Management Yesterday and Today, to answer the questions: What has been the evolution of management? How did we get here and where are we going? Finally, we will work with chapter 3, Organization Culture and Environment, and chapter 5, Social Responsibility and Managerial Ethics. We will explore questions like: What is organizational culture, and what is its source? How does an organizations culture affect managers and management? What are the differences among social obligation, social responsiveness, and social responsibility? What is values based management? Why is ethical leadership important?

Assignment #2
With this assignment, we plunge into the first role of managers Planning. We begin with chapter 6, Decision Making: The Essence of the Managers Job. We will explore a variety of approaches to decision-making and attempt to discover how managers can make effective decisions in todays world. Then we move to chapter 7, Foundations of Planning, and answer the questions: What is planning? Why do managers plan? How do managers plan? With chapter 8, Strategic Management, we explore, in depth, the importance of strategic planning and the strategic planning process. With chapter 9, Planning Tools and Techniques, we will learn specific tools used in the planning process.

Assignment #3
Chapter 10, Organizational Structure and Design, introduces us to a second role of managers Organizing. We will answer questions like: What are the traditional and contemporary views of work specialization, chain of command, and span of control? What are the three traditional organizational designs? What is the difference between mechanistic and organic organizations? What are the organizational design challenges facing managers today? With chapter 11, Communication and Information Technology, we will tackle the most important aspect of successful management effective communication. Our questions will be: Why is effective communication important for managers? What is the difference between interpersonal and organizational communication?

What are the components and functions of the communication process? What are the barriers to effective interpersonal communication and how do we overcome them? How does technology affect organizational communication? What are the challenges of managing communication in an Internet world? Human Resource Management is the topic of chapter 12. As we work with the information in this chapter, we will explore: The Human Resource Management process Human Resource Planning: Recruitment, Selection, Orientation, and Training Employee Performance Management and Career Development Current Issues in Human Resource Management

Assignment #4
For this last assignment, we will study of the final two roles of managers Leading and Controlling. We begin with the managers role as leader with chapter 13, Managing Change and Innovation, chapter 16, Motivating Employees, and chapter 17, Leadership. We will learn the forces for change at play in todays world of work and the strategies for managing organizational change. Students will have an opportunity to examine their potential to act as change agents and understand what it takes to inspire innovation and lead people through successful change. One of the greatest responsibilities of managers is motivating employees. We will study the early theories of motivation, contemporary theories of motivation, and current issues in motivation. We will examine various views and definitions of leaders and leadership, differentiate between transactional and transformational leadership, and look at emerging twenty-first century leadership issues. Our work with chapter 18, Foundations of Control, will help us answer the questions: What is control and why is it important? What is the control process? What are the tools for controlling organizational performance? What are some contemporary issues in control?
