Bluetooth Module Firmware Update Procedure

This document describes the procedure and precautions for upgrading the Bluetooth Module firmware to conform to your cell-phone.

Step1: Before You Get Started


You need the following items: PC with Bluetooth capability or a Bluetooth USB dongle. Update tool Bluetooth Software Update Tool (Downloadable from the Kenwood website). Bluetooth Module Firmware Update file (Downloadable from the Kenwood website). Note: The Bluetooth Dongle can be a general purpose USB Bluetooth device and does not need to be brand specific.

Caution
If you can use your cell-phone without problems at the moment, you need not update the firmware. If an error occurs while updating the firmware, the Bluetooth Module may become unusable. Be sure to read the following procedure and precautions carefully before updating the firmware. Be sure to park the vehicle in a safe place before updating. Keep the engine running in order to prevent battery from running out. Do not turn off the engine or CD receiver power while updating. Update cannot be performed correctly and the CD receiver may become unusable. Note: Please be advised that the settings on Your CD receiver will be cleared further to completing the Software Update, i.e. Paired Phones, User Settings, Voice Tags.

1 Downloading the Bluetooth Software Update Tool


Select [3 Download]. The Bluetooth Software Update Tool can be downloaded. Select [Save] to save it on the Desktop of your PC.

Work Flow

Check the firmware version and the connecting cell-phone model to check whether firmware update is required. Download the firmware update file and the update tool, and then install the update tool. Initiate Your CD receiver for the Update Process. Start the update tool and transfer the update file. Check that the firmware has been updated.

System Recommendation: OS: Microsoft Windows Vista Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 Bluetooth: Bluetooth Standard Ver. 1.2 or higher

2 Downloading the Bluetooth Firmware Update File


Select [3 Download]. Select [Save] to save it on the Desktop of your PC.

3 Install the Software Update Wizard Checking the Firmware Version 1 Select STANDBY
Press the [SRC] button. Select the STANDBY display. 3-1 You will find Setup_OEM. exe then, double click it. 3-2 Select [Next].

2 Enter the Bluetooth setting mode


2-1 Press the [PLAY MODE] button. 2-2 Turn the Control knob to select BT Setting and press the Control knob.

3 Enter the Bluetooth detail setting mode


Turn the Control knob to select Detailed Settings and press the Control knob. 3-3 Select [Next]. 3-4 Select [Install].

4 Confirm the PIN code


Turn the Control knob to select PIN Code Edit and press the Control knob. The PIN code is displayed.

5 Confirm the firmware version


5-1 Press the [MENU] button. 5-2 Turn the Control knob to select BT F/W Update and press the Control knob. The current firmware version is displayed.

3-5 Select [Finish].

6 Exit the Bluetooth setting mode


Press the [MENU] button for at least 1 second and then press it again.

Step2: Initiate Your CD receiver for the Update Process 1 Select the STANDBY
Press the [SRC] button. Select the STANDBY display.

3 Searching for the Kenwood Audio Product to Update


3-1 Select [Search Devices] to display a list of Bluetoothenabled device. 3-2 Select <KENWOOD BT CD/R4P1>, and then Select [Next].

2 Enter the Bluetooth setting mode


2-1 Press the [PLAY MODE] button. 2-2 Turn the Control knob to select BT Setting and press the Control knob.

3 Enter the Bluetooth detail setting mode


Turn the Control knob to select Detailed Settings and press the Control knob.

4 Confirm the PIN code


Turn the Control knob to select PIN Code Edit and press the Control knob. Remember the PIN code as it is used in the update process.

4 Establishing the Bluetooth Connection


After Selecting the [Next] button the screen shown to the left will be displayed. Click on the pop-up message that is displayed at the bottom right of your PC screen. Be sure to click the message portion; do not close it.

5 Enter the Bluetooth update process


5-1 Press the [MENU] button. 5-2 Turn the Control knob to select BT F/W Update and press the Control knob. The current firmware version is displayed. 5-3 Press the Control knob again. 5-4 Turn the Control knob to select YES and press the Control knob. Update Ready is displayed.

5 Entering the Passkey (PIN) Step3: Launching the Software Update Tool 1 Launch the Bluetooth Software Update Tool
Select [Start] > [Programs] > [Bluetooth Software Update Tool] > [Bluetooth Software Update Tool]. Note 1: This is the same PIN you used to pair your cell-phone with your Navigation/Multimedia receiver. If you did not initiate a personal PIN, you can use the default. Default setting = 0000 or 1234. Note 2: If an Error occurs after entering the PIN, check it at PIN Code Edit in the Menu. This prompt screen will be automatically displayed on the PC Note: Refer to the Troubleshooting Instructions. to enter the Passkey. Note: This Update Process will take approximately 2 3 minutes. Do not Power Off the unit during the Update Procedure.

2 Select a file as instructed on the screen


2-1 Select [Next]. 2-2 Select <Type E>, and then Select [Next].

6 Update in Progress screen

2-3 Select [Browse].

2-4 Select [Desktop] from Drop-Down menu. Select <(ModelName)_fw_y***.ulp>, and then select [Open]. Note: Example of model name; kdc-bt742u, kdc-bt6044 Note: *** in the file name indicates the firmware version.

7 Flash Update Successful Screens


Select [Finish] to close the Bluetooth Software Update Tool.

2-5 Select [Next].

Note: The updating process on your Kenwood unit may take several minutes to complete even after you have finished the Flash Update process.

8 Exit Bluetooth Firmware update mode of CD receiver
Updating display changes to Complete. (It takes about 4 minutes.) 8-1 Press the [MENU] button and then the Control knob. The new firmware version is displayed. (Ex: BT F/W 3.12) 8-2 Press the [MENU] button for at least 1 second and then press it again to exit Bluetooth Firmware update mode. Caution: PIN code is changed to 0000. Set the PIN code again at PIN Code Edit in the Menu.

Troubleshooting Instructions
Passkey (PIN) Error

Step4: Verify the Bluetooth Firmware Version


Verify that the Firmware Version has been updated successfully in the Kenwood unit. Refer to <Checking the Firmware Version> (page 1). Your Kenwood unit now includes the necessary firmware version. If you enter the wrong Passkey (PIN) or wait too long before entering the Passkey (PIN), a communication error will be displayed. Press the [OK] button on the Error Message, and then press the [Back] button on the Bluetooth Software Update Tool screen. For Windows Vista: If Add Bluetooth Device Wizard screen appears, press [Cancel] to close the screen. Repeat the procedures accordingly. (See <Entering the Passkey (PIN)> section in page 2.) Bluetooth Connection Error If you already have 5 devices paired with Your Kenwood Audio Product, you will not be able to connect via Bluetooth from your PC. Please delete one of the devices from the Bluetooth Paired Devices list on the Kenwood unit. Phone Connection Failure If you are unable to connect your phone to your Kenwood product after the firmware update, delete the Kenwood unit in the Bluetooth phone menu and redo the Pairing Process. (Refer to your cell-phone manufacturers Instruction Manual.) Connection Errors If there are Bluetooth related applications (programs) running, connecting your cell-phone via Bluetooth may be disabled. Shut down the applications.
