2011-2012 IDEA Workshop Schedule

The IDEA (Intensive Development in Education Through the Arts) program provides outstanding professional development for teachers at all grade levels. Teachers may earn non-degree graduate credit through Clemson University as well as a district recertification points for their participation. IDEA provides opportunities for educators in arts integration training, with workshops led by nationally recognized teaching artists, as well as local teaching artist professional.

Defining Arts Integration August 30, 2011 from 4-7pm Heather Magruder, local teaching artist and Education Director for the Metropolitan Arts Council Teachers will explore the fundamentals of arts integration, exploring the definition and foundation of arts integration while. Answering the questions What is arts integration? and Why is it important for my students?

Focusing on Arts Integration September 13, 2011 from 4-7pm Karen Erickson, Kennedy Center Teaching Artist Join Karen Erickson to uncover what truly makes an arts integrated lesson and how to create them. Participants are given the opportunity to experience a lesson twice, first as a lesson that only has the appearance of integration and secondly as an actual integrated lesson.

The Drama of Science September 14, 2011 from 4-7pm Karen Erickson, Kennedy Center Teaching Artist Participants explore a step-by-step process of integrating science concepts and drama strategies in the classroom. Additionally, examine techniques for classroom management and building group dynamics.

Acting Right I September 27, 2011 Beth Radford, local teaching artist trained through Focus 5, Inc. and Arts Coordinator for Pine Street Elementary School in Spartanburg County In this workshop, teachers learn how to help students build the skills necessary to establish a sense of self-control, accountability, and teambuilding in their classroom.

Documentation: Beyond the Bulletin Board Part One October 11, 2011 and Part Two April 12, 2012 Heather Magruder, local teaching artist and Education Director for the Metropolitan Arts Council

Guides teachers through a reflection on a unit of study and provides them with the tools to create documentation boards that reveal the rationale behind lesson activities, addressing the teaching-learning process and student development.

Integrating Music and Writing October 27, 2011 Heather Magruder, local teaching artist and Education Director for the Metropolitan Arts Council Jeanie Reed, nationally-certified local music teacher at Stone Academy and former Greenville County Teacher of the Year Participants will explore how the beat, rhythm, tone and mood of music can be influential in building strong writers.

Living Pictures: Deepening Comprehension & Assessment through Drama November 8, 2011 Sean Layne, Kennedy Center Teaching Artist This workshop focuses on a drama technique known as tableau. It helps students expand their knowledge and understanding by asking them to take on the roles of people or objects.

Freeze Tag Tableau November 9, 2011 Sean Layne, Kennedy Center Teaching Artist With a basis of tableau, this workshop allows for more structured, sequenced tableaus that offer more of a performance that engages the whole class.

Reading Portraiture January 9, 2012 Melanie Layne, Kennedy Center Teaching Artist Theres more to portraits than you might think! This workshop teaches how to help students build background knowledge. Teachers can apply this strategy to teaching historical and literary figures across the curriculum.

Reading Art Across the Curriculum January 10, 2012 Melanie Layne, Kennedy Center Teaching Artist

This workshop introduces the language of visual art so that teachers feel confident looking, thinking, and talking about art with students.

Printmaking: Creating Art from Writing January 11, 2012 Melanie Layne, Kennedy Center Teaching Artist Interested in teaching students how to create portraits that demonstrate their understanding of historical and literary figures? Join Melanie Layne to learn how to create portraits containing symbols that represent the significance, actions, and/or emotions of a person.

Exploring the Monarch Butterfly through Shadow Puppetry February 7, 2012 Hobey Ford, Kennedy Center Teaching Artist and performer in our POP Show Animalia Explore monarch butterfly metamorphosis and migration through the art of shadow puppetry. Learn to create shadow puppets in the classroom while exploring this fascinating science curriculum.

Bringing Literature to Life February 28, 2012 Lenore Kelner, Kennedy Center Teaching Artist This workshop explores story dramatization techniques that allow students to retell and reenact a story or a scene in their own words.

Character Interviews: A Dramatic Approach to Reading February 29, 2012 Lenore Kelner, Kennedy Center Teaching Artist Teachers learn how to pose appropriate questions that require students to support their answers from the literature, make predictions about their characters, as well as analyze the texts theme.

Improv in the Classroom March 1, 2012 Anne Tromsness, local teaching artist, performer and educator through both Christ Church Episcopal School and the Warehouse Theatres Educational Outreach Program This workshop shows teachers how to use the art of improvisational acting to assess student learning.

Learning and Dancing throughout the Curriculum March 12, 2012 Eric Johnson, Kennedy Center Teaching Artist

Participants learn ways to explore dance elements with students and gain proficiency in leading easy, enjoyable dance activities that connect to science, math, social studies, and language arts.

Bringing Patterns to Life March 13, 2012 Eric Johnson, Kennedy Center Teaching Artist Teachers learn how to employ patterns of directional movement to identify, create, and extend repeating mathematical patterns with large and small group choreography.

Building an Inclusive Classroom March 14, 2012 Eric Johnson, Kennedy Center Teaching Artist Explore how to build cooperative team work by learning to lead classroom-tested, playful, creative movement activities that teach students to take turns, listen carefully, read a partner's non-verbal cues, and speak in response.
