Number of Units: Three semester units Units are post-baccalaureate level, professional development units primarily used for professional advancement and are accredited through Fresno Pacific University. Grade Level: K-12 educators Course Description Online education can provide the opportunity for students and educators to communicate and demonstrate mastery in ways that would be challenging in the traditional setting. The Leading Edge Certification course was designed to prepare teachers for this challenge. Aligning effective pedagogy with engaging curriculum and a variety of technology tools, teachers will become empowered to be tomorrow's leaders in online teaching. Course participants will learn that while there are many similarities, online learning enjoys some fundamental differences that require a different approach to teaching. The possibilities for matching learning objectives to assessments and creating student-centered activities will be explored through the use of emerging technology. This course will strengthen the essential skills and knowledge necessary to be an effective online instructor and meet needs of 21st century students as identified in the National Educational Technology Plan. Course Materials Online Resources Everything that you need for this course will be found online. Participants do not have to purchase any materials and none will be sent. A word processor and presentation program, such as Microsoft Office or Apple iWorks is recommended but not required. A wide range of free alternatives such as the Open Office suite of programs, Zoho, Glide and ThinkFree web-based office suites, and Google Docs are strongly encouraged. We will be using Moodle as the Learning Management System for this training. It works well with both Mac & PC and does not have any conflicts with any of the main browsers (Chrome, Internet Explorer 7-9, Safari, and Firefox 3.6-4.0). Technology Requirements: In order to successfully complete the course requirements, course participants will need Internet access, be able to send and receive email, know how to manage simple files in a word processing program, and have a basic understanding of the Internet. Please remember that the instructor is not able to offer technical support. In the event that you need technical support, please contact your Internet Service Provider. System Requirements: You will need an Internet connection, Internet Explorer 6 or above, or Mozilla Firefox. Firefox is recommended for both Windows and Mac. Java Quicktime Player Hardware: Windows: Windows 98, ME, NT, 4.0, 2000, XP, Vista, or 7 and a 56k V.90 modem or better Internet connection. Macintosh: Mac OS X and a 56k V.90 modem or better Internet connection. Popup Blockers: These programs can interfere with opening video clips, bulletin boards, seeing images during tests, and accessing your course grades. If you have popup blockers installed you may need to disable them. How to Disable Popup Blockers Moodle: This course will be delivered totally online. Moodle is a learning management system that provides students access to online resources, documents, graded assignments, quizzes, discussion forums, etc. with an easy to learn and use interface. Discussion Forums: Participation is an important expectation of this course and all online courses. Online discussions promote reflection and analysis while allowing students to appreciate and evaluate positions that others express. While students may not be engaging with the same students throughout this course they will be expected to offer comments, questions, and replies to the discussion question whenever possible. The faculty role in the discussion forum is that of an observer and facilitator. Each module has at least one Signature Assignment that participants submit for grading. These assignments will be compiled and submitted in an ePortfolio. The ePortfolio can be used for interviewing and career advancement opportunities after the course is completed. It is required that assignments are submitted according to the published deadlines. Participants will have access to all deadlines in the Course Calendar. Every assignment has a rubric. Most participants are successful on their assignments because they align their work to the rubric, and assignments can be corrected and resubmitted. The lead facilitator or other course facilitators will comment on assignments and return them so they can improved upon. Please remember to check for these comments. Certification Requirements & Expectations The Leading Edge Certification is a 45 hour course of study with 90 hours of student work, which includes the development of a portfolio. It is expected that participants will typically work six to eight hours per week, for 6 weeks. The participants that usually have the most success in this virtual environment set aside a specific time for their work each week. One of the great things about online courses is the flexibility it provides participants for accessing the course and submitting assignments when it is convenient for the learner. Grading Policies and Rubrics 25 total points possible 25 22 =A 22 20 = B or Credit Grade Below 20 points = no credit The discernment between an A or a B is at the discretion of the instructor based on the quality of work submitted (see assignment rubrics). Coursework falling short of a quality equaling a B or a Credit Grade will be returned with further instructions. All assignments must be completed in order to receive a grade. In addition, all assignments are expected to reflect the quality that teacher-training institutions require of professional educators. If completed assignments do not meet this standard, students will be notified with further instructions from the instructor.

Discussions You will be participating in discussion forums as you progress through the course. There is one grade for all of the forums which is based on the Discussion Assignment Grading Rubric.

Rubrics for Assignments Each assignment will be assessed with the use of a rubric. Rubric for ePortfolio After all assignments have been assessed, an overall rubric will be used to assess the portfolio Signature Assignments. The average or overall rubric scores needs to be a 3 for your portfolio to pass. Writing Requirements Superior: Writing is clear, succinct, and reflects graduate level expectations. Standard: Writing is acceptable with very few mistakes in grammar and spelling. Sub-standard: Writing contains noticeable mistakes in grammar and spelling. Grading Options Course participants have the option of requesting a letter grade or a credit/no credit when submitting the online grade form. Students will submit grade form when coursework has been completed. Instructor/Student Contact The Leading Edge Certification course kicks off with a face-to-face meeting and then in an online environment. Throughout the course students will be communicating with the instructor and their classmates on a regular basis through the use of asynchronous discussion forums. In addition to the initial face-to-face meeting there is one scheduled synchronous class meeting in which students will have an opportunity to communicate and collaborate with both the instructor and their classmates. A Virtual Office is utilized for class questions and students are provided with an 800 number the event they want to make phone contact. In addition, students are encouraged to email the instructor at any time. Students will also receive feedback on the required assignments as they are submitted.
