Structure of the programme

At the beginning of the programme, students will choose one of the offered fields of specialisation as their individual focus of study. This choice determines the six basic courses to be taken from a catalogue (Thermochemistry, Physical Metallurgy, Transport Phenomena, Process Control Engineering, Fabrication Technology of Metals, Mineral Materials, Metallic Materials, Process Metallurgy and Recycling, and Fabrication Technology of Mineral Materials) as well as the major subjects of study. The programme offers a choice of four fields of specialisation: Process Technology of Metals Melt Treatment and Continuous Casting Unit Operations in Nonferrous Metallurgy Casting Processes and Casting Alloys Fundamentals and Solving Methods in Metal Forming Industrial Furnaces Physical Metallurgy and Materials Advanced Physical Metallurgy Introduction to Texture Analysis Micromechanics of Materials Comprehensive Physical Metallurgy Lab Material Science of Mineral Materials Glass Ceramics Functional Design of Ceramics and Composites Thermochemical & Dynamical Materials Modelling Concepts Material Science of Mineral Materials Material Science of Steels Introduction to Texture Analysis Materials Characterisation Physical Metallurgy Lab The programme is complemented by: a complementary course (German language course). a ten-week internship a study-related thesis (scope: approx. six weeks) a six-month Masters thesis in which students must show the ability to solve practical problems within their chosen field of specialisation. During this six-month period, the candidates are integrated into RWTH Aachen Univiversitys research teams.

Goals of the programme

Metallurgical Engineering is concerned with the development, production, and processing of ferrous, non-ferrous, and mineral materials. It is the basis for innovative products and new technological developments in the fields of industry, technology, and medicine. Research in this department focuses on materials design, including general research to ascertain the structure of materials and to investigate opportunities for optimising known materials (e.g. steel, aluminium, magnesium, glass, ceramic, etc.). Scientists in this division also deal with issues relating to surface technology, recycling, manufacturing, and processing using state-of-the-art production processes and quality assurance inspections.

General description of the programme

The programme provides in-depth knowledge and understanding of metallurgical engineering. Its particular focus is on industrial R&D practices and modern manufacturing processes. The programme aims to enhance the students' ability to design and manage projects and to lead and co-ordinate project teams. It focuses on all disciplines within Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Technology. At the beginning of their studies, students have to select their individual field of specialisation.

Formal entrance requirements

A candidate should have a recognised first degree (Bachelor of Science or Engineering) in Metallurgy, Materials Engineering, or in another closely related discipline, awarded by an internationally recognised university or equivalent degree-awarding institution. Applicants must have proof of their English language skills (TOEFL 550 paper-based, 213 computerbased; IELTS 6.0). Further, candidates should have performed above average in their undergraduate studies.

Special entrance requirements

Students should have an interest in continuing their careers in the field of metallurgy or material science. The programme is appropriate for engineers coming from industry or university. Candidates should be able to apply their knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems, as well as to set up and perform experiments in a laboratory setting.
