Symmetry Symmetrical Figures-A figure is said to be symmetrical if it is identical on either side or can be divided into two equal halves

Line of Symmetry-The line which divides them into two equal halves is called the line of
symmetry or axis of symmetry or it is the line about which the figure may be folded so that the two parts of the figure will coincide Some geometrical figures having a line of Symmetry

Lines of Symmetry for a regular PolygonPage 1 of 5

Square-A Square is a regular Polygon as it has all four sides equal and all angles Right angles it has 4 lines of Symmetry Regular Pentagon-A regular Pentagon is a regular polygon having 5 sides equal and its 5 angles are also equal a regular Pentagon has 5 lines of symmetry Regular Hexagon-A regular hexagon has six equal sides and hence its six angles are equal It has 6 lines of Symmetry Mirror Reflection The concept of line symmetry is closely related to the mirror reflection. If a figure has a line of symmetry and if a mirror is placed along the line of symmetry then the image or reflection of one side of the figure is exactly same as the other side

Line of Symmetry of a figure is also known as the Reflection Symmetry A Line Segment is symmetrical about its perpendicular bisector A given angle having equal arms is symmetrical about the bisector of the angle An isosceles triangle is symmetrical about the bisector of the vertical angle A kite is symmetrical about its diagonal A semicircle has namely one line of symmetry namely the perpendicular bisector of the diameter A rectangle has two lines of symmetry, each one of which is the line joining the mid points of opposite sides A rhombus is symmetrical about each one of its diagonals An equilateral triangle has 3 lines of symmetry about the each of the bisector of the angles A circle has got infinite lines of symmetry about each of its diameters The number of lines of Symmetry of a regular polygon is equal to the vertices of the Polygon A Scalene triangle and a parallelogram has no lines of Symmetry Each of the following English alphabet capital letters is Symmetrical

Rotational Symmetry
A figure is said to have a rotational symmetry if it fits onto itself more than once during a complete rotation (360) The Angle through which an object rotates(turns) about a fixed point is known as the Angle of Rotation The turning of a figure about a fixed point is called as Rotation and it may be clockwise or anticlockwise. The fixed point about rotation takes place is called the centre of rotation. A full turn means a rotation of 360
Page 2 of 5

A half turn means a rotation of 180 A quarter turn means a rotation of 90 The number of times a figure fits onto itself in one complete rotation is called the order of rotational Symmetry Rotating a figure through 90 clockwise is the same as rotating it anticlockwise through 270 Rotating a figure through 180 clockwise is the same as rotating it anticlockwise through 180 A 2 D shape has rotational symmetry if it repeats the appearance of its starting position two or more times during a full turn Point Symmetry A special form of rotational symmetry is called point symmetry. A shape has point symmetry if it repeats itself after being rotated about its centre through an angle of 180 Figures having Line Symmetry and Rotational Symmetry Figures No of lines of Symmetry 4 2 3 2 Infinite Order of Rotational Symmetry 4 2 3 2 Infinite Centre of Rotation
