Good Prospects for 2011

In 2010, all of the segments of the van business rebounded. As a result, Mercedes-Benz Vans was able to substantially increase its sales and earnings compared to the previous year, with the number of unit sales rising by more than one third. This trend was supported by the newly presented Vito van as well as by the Viano minivan with their new, fuel-efficient engines. The characteristic features of the new Mercedes-Benz Vito include BlueEFFICIENCY technology, a greater payload, a new chassis, less interior noise, and an upgraded driver area. The vehicle consumes up to 1.5 liters less fuel than the predecessor models, and CO2 emissions are lower as well. In addition, the Mercedes-Benz Viano minivan also sets even higher standards for comfort and efficiency than the predecessor model. We are also writing a new chapter in the story of light commercial vehicle drive technology by becoming the first automaker to introduce a van featuring a battery-electric drive ex works: the Vito E-CELL. A small batch of 100 units of this vehicle have been out on the streets of Berlin and Stuttgart since summer 2010 as part of a project conducted by the German Ministry of Transport, Building, and Urban Development (BMVBS). Production of the follow-up series began in February. This batch will comprise more than 2,000 units for customer use. The positive sales trend posted by Mercedes-Benz Vans in 2010 will continue this year. We will introduce the current model generation of the Sprinter in Latin America in 2011, thereby substantially enhancing our product range there. In addition, the Sprinter, the most successful vehicle of its kind worldwide, will also be introduced in China in 2011. Sincerely, Volker Mornhinweg Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans

Ancestors: The Benz Delivery Vehicle and the Daimler Business Vehicle

1896: Benz Delivery Vehicle

1897: Daimler Business Vehicle

Sprinter NCV3
history of Mercedes-Benz own van production series really got going in 1955, when the brand presented its first postwar van at the IAA in Frankfurt: the L 319. This vehicle was later replaced by the T2 and the T1. In 1986 Mercedes-Benz added the T2 (LN1), whose current successor is the Vario. The light trucks versatility provides municipalities, delivery companies, and bus operators with an ideal basis for a broad range of different applications. Through the introduction of the L 206 and the L 306 in 1971, Mercedes-Benz expanded its commercial vehicle lineup to include the compact van segment below 3.5 tons GVW, which today is covered by the Vito product range. A particularly successful representative of the Mercedes-Benz van lineup is the Sprinter, which was launched on the market in 1995. With cumulative sales of almost two million units, the Sprinter is the best-selling vehicle of its class in Europe. Today it can be found in more than 100 countries around the world. The reasons for this success are the vans customized vehicle concepts; wide range of body and weight variants; superior engines; a pleasing, timelessly modern design; and an especially functional cab. The Sprinter also has an extensive array of standard-fitted safety features, including numerous cutting-edge assistance systems. Daimler is the global leader for such systems, which it is further refining for its entire commercial vehicle range. Its therefore no wonder that the Sprinter has won many trophies and awards during its career. They include the German Commercial Vehicle Award, the Van of the Year title in several countries, and the highest van rating in various surveys to select the best commercial vehicles. The James Cook camper van, a travel variant, has been honored with the title Camper Van of the Year. As a result of all these distinctions, the Sprinter has won more awards than almost any other van in history. The new Sprinter NCV3 was added to the van lineup in 2006, and the vehicle has continued to be a success despite the general market slump during the recent global recession.
Mercedes-Benz Vans: Ancestors

It was back in the age when cars still looked like carriages, with big spoked wheels at the rear and smaller ones at the front. The driver had a raised seat like a coachman; the only difference was that he had his hands on a steering wheel instead of holding the reins. Gottlieb Daimler presented and delivered the worlds first truck on October 1, 1896. It was equipped with a four-horsepower (hp) two-cylinder engine and had a payload of 1,500 kilograms (kg). Shortly thereafter, Carl Benz introduced his own commercial vehicle the Benz Delivery Vehicle on December 5, 1896. Considered to be the worlds first motorized van, it was delivered to the Du bon March department store in Paris. In December 1897 DaimlerMotoren-Gesellschaft began offering the Daimler Business Vehicle series. The models had payloads of 500, 800, 1,200, and 2,000 kg, and engines with outputs of three, four, six, eight, and ten hp. These vehicles are the ancestors of Europes most advanced range of vans, which comprises the Mercedes-Benz Vito, Sprinter, and Vario. The

Highlights 2010/2011.
2010
n April: The first Viano and Vito vans to be manufactured by Fujian Daimler Automotive (FJDA) roll off the assembly line in the Chinese city of Fuzhou (Fujian province). The vans are produced in China by a joint venture established between Fujian Motors Group (FJMG), China Motor Corp. (CMC), and Daimler AG in 2007. Says Lian Xiaoqing, the CEO of FJDA, We have successfully produced the first Viano and Vito units. For us, this step marks the beginning of a new era of development. And Ulrich Walker, Chairman and CEO of Daimler Northeast Asia, adds, The Mercedes-Benz Viano/Vito and Sprinter multipurpose vehicles are extremely well suited to the needs of businesses and families. n August: The new generation of the Mercedes-Benz Viano sets new standards for minivans. The efficient new drive system is unparalleled, featuring BlueEFFICIENCY technology for maximum fuel economy and environmental compatibility. This drive technology encompasses demand-controlled ancillary components, an ECO start-stop function, low rolling-resistance tires, and other features. The Vianos smoothly running four and six-cylinder diesel and gasoline engines cover a range of outputs extending from 100 kilowatts (kW) (126 hp) to 190 kW (258 hp). With its modified and retuned model-specific front and rear axles, the chassis ensures great driving pleasure, safety, and comfort. And last but not least, the Vianos updated look is modeled along the lines of the current Mercedes-Benz cars, giving it a very distinctive design. The new generation of the Vito is presented at the same time. The vehicle is robust, durable, and reliable, making it the right van for even the tough-

Assembly of the first customer vehicle at Fujian Daimler Automotive in Fuzhou, China est jobs. The Vito also benefits from the new engine generation, as well as from a retuned chassis with a model-specific arrangement for goods or passenger transport, and a driver-friendly cab. As far as the panel van and Mixto versions are concerned, durability is at the top of the agenda; with the crewbus, the focus is on the ride comfort of the rear passengers. n September: At the IAA Commercial Vehicles show in Hanover, Europcar the largest rental vehicle company in Europe acquires 200 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 313 CDI panel vans. The Paris-based company offers around 190,000 vehicles for rental at 5,300 rental locations in more than 150 countries. In Germany, Europcar offers Mercedes-Benz rental vans at more than 577 locations. n September: One of the greatest attractions at Daimlers IAA presentation is the world premiere of the Vito E-CELL. The new Sprinter LGT also makes its debut at the commercial vehicle show in Hanover. Given appropriate operating conditions, the cost of the vans BlueEFFICIENCY liquefied petroleum gas technology can quickly be recouped due to the comparatively low cost of the fuel. The vehicles gas tank is positioned under the cargo area floor and holds 76 liters of liquefied gas, which gives the Sprinter LGT a range of about 500 kilometers (km). Because it has a bivalent design, the Sprinter LGT can also carry 100 liters of gasoline in order to extend the vehicles range. Like the NGT natural gas variant, the engine of the Sprinter LGT has an output of 115 kW (156 hp), complies with the Euro 5 emissions standard, and has a maximum torque of 240 newton meters (Nm). The Sprinter LGT is available in several different versions: as a panel van, crewbus, chassis with cab, and twin cabin. For

each variant, the van is available with a wheelbase of either 3,665 millimeters (mm) or 4,325 mm. The van has a gross vehicle weight of 3.5 tons. In addition to introducing the new Sprinter LGT, Mercedes-Benz adds more variants to the Sprinter NGT product range. The new versions include the Sprinter NGT with a twin cabin and the crewbus with monovalent natural gas drive. The Sprinter LGT panel van is now also available with a gross vehicle weight of 3.88 tons, while the chassis also comes in 3.5-ton and 4.25-ton GVW versions. n October: An independent panel of experts from the postal and logistics sector presents the Vito E-CELL with the Postal Technology International Award 2010 in the category Transport/Logistics Innovation of the Year. The award, which has been presented since 2009, honors outstanding developments in the area of logistics, automation technologies, innovative delivery systems, and environmental protection. Together with its online edition, the Postal Technology International trade magazine provides decision-makers from the logistics and postal sectors worldwide with all the latest sector news. The award is presented during the annual Post Expo logistics trade fair in Copenhagen, Denmark. Commenting on the award presentation, Volker Mornhinweg, Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans, says, Im particularly pleased that we have been able to introduce our innovative Vito E-CELL to this important customer group in such a positive way. n December: Shortly before the end of the year Mercedes-Benz Vans receives its biggest order ever in Germany. The contract from Deutsche Post DHL is for 1,300 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 310 CDI vans with 3.5 tons GVW and an integral box body from SAXAS Nutzfahrzeuge Werdau AG. All of the vehicles are to be equipped with the latest version of the ESP stability program as standard. This system determines the weight and position

In a symbolic gesture, Volker Mornhinweg, Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans, presents a Sprinter key to Thomas Zuber (right), Head of Letter and DHL Package Delivery at Deutsche Post DHL of the freight in order to optimize the vehicles stability. The order also encompasses a comprehensive service package with a duration of up to nine years. The package includes the maintenance and repair of the 1,300 vehicles, delivery and pickup of the vans, a tire service, and the associated vehicle management. Mercedes-Benz Vans has prevailed over the competition for several reasons. They include the vehicles high technological standards, high durability, ergonomic driver area, raised roof, and low rear-entry feature. Daimler AG and the Russian commercial vehicle manufacturer GAZ sign a memorandum of understanding regarding the production of Sprinter vans. Plans call for the local production of engines, transmissions, axles, and other components. Depending on the results of several feasibility studies, Mercedes-Benz Vans plans to work together with GAZ in 2011 to prepare the production facility in Nizhny Novgorod for the assembly of vehicles and components. Once production has been ramped up, about 25,000 Sprinters will roll off the locations assembly line every year. Daimler will organize the vehicles sales and service through the existing Mercedes-Benz dealership network, which will be supported in the future by selected GAZ retailers.

2011
n February: In a rerun of 2010, Mercedes-Benz Vans is declared the undisputed winner in the Vans category of this years Image Award competition of the renowned VerkehrsRundschau automotive magazine. The ranking is

Highlights 2010/2011

Every year, automotive editors from Finland, Sweden, and Norway get together to put vans of up to three tons GVW through their paces in ice and snow. The event is an initiative of the Finnish automotive magazine Auto, tekniikka ja kuljetus. This time around, the Arctic Van Test 2010 is won by the Mercedes-Benz Vito 116 CDI. The test criteria include handling, fuel consumption, load capacity, and driving performance, as well as arctic-specific attributes such as cold-start behavior, heating, and mirror and window de-icing. n March: Since March, the Stuttgart police department has been using the Mercedes-Benz Vito E-CELL in its daily operations. The vehicle has an all-electric drive, which makes it very quiet and absolutely emissionfree. The Vito E-CELL is not an experimental vehicle; instead, it is a full-fledged van that can be used in everyday operations. The batteries of the Vito E-CELL are located underneath the cargo bed in order to save space. The state-of-the-art batteries are very powerful and durable lithium-ion units. They have a capacity of 36 kilowatt-hours, giving the vehicle a range of around 130 km. The Vito E-CELLs electric motor has an output of 60 kW and delivers 280 Nm of torque. In Deutsche Posts delivery center in Waiblingen, Andreas Burkhart, Head of Sales and Marketing at Mercedes-Benz Vans, presents the keys for seven Mercedes-Benz Vito E-CELLs to Uwe Brinks, Board of Management Member of Deutsche Post DHL. Including the five vehicles it operates in Berlin and three other units of the environmentally friendly van it uses elsewhere, Deutsche Post now has a fleet consisting of 15 Vito E-Cells. This is the largest fleet of all-electric Vitos currently being used in continuous operation by a customer.

based on a representative survey that assesses the image and familiarity of leading suppliers of commercial vehicles, as well as products and services for commercial vehicle fleets. Mercedes-Benz has always won the award in previous years. This year the operators of small fleets award the Mercedes-Benz vans 812 of a maximum of 1,000 image points. The owners of medium-sized and large fleets even give 823 image points to the Mercedes-Benz lineup of Sprinter, Vito, and Vario vans.
