Herb Selection

Formula Manufacture

Only high quality Chinese herbs are used in the manufacture of ChinaMed formulas. When the herbs arrive at the factory, the botanical identity of each ingredient is checked, both by appearance as well as HPLC testing, by a trained Chinese medical pharmacognosist. Herbs that are of poor quality, as well as substitute herbs are discarded.

Processing
The herbs are first cut and then ground, in order to increase the surface area, and thus maximize the extraction process. They are then decocted twice in a specific mixture of purified water and alcohol. The volatile oils, which come off more quickly, are captured and added back to the formula just prior to drying. The liquid from the first decoction is strained off and the dregs undergo a second decoction before being strained off and discarded. From start to finish, manufacturing takes place in stainless steel equipment.

Synergy
Decocting the herbs together creates a complex interaction which results in a considerable enhancement of the effects of the individual ingredients. This is the ancient, time-tested method. Some companies use a simpler process. They extract each herb individually, and then combine the powders together. While all of the ingredients are present, they lack the vital synergistic benefits. Yet other companies are even less ethical. They press their herbs into pills or capsules directly from raw powdered herbs. These products are full of inert plant fibers, and contain little of the active components. This results in a product with minimal potency and medicinal value.

Low Temperature Processing

The liquid from the two stage decoction process is mixed together prior to being concentrated and spray dried. This extract is then vacuum-dried and ground into a fine powder. Final mixing, to ensure that the heavier components are evenly distributed, precedes encapsulation and bottling. During the entire process, the temperature never exceeds 100 centigrade, thus preserving the delicate chemical actives in each formula. Another unique feature of this process is that it only requires a minimal quantity of excipient 0.5% or less, soluble maize starch.

Quality Control
During manufacture the product undergoes rigorous two-stage testing, both in house as well as externally (by an independent third party authority), for contamination with bacteria, heavy metal, pesticides and aristolochic acid. Samples from each completed batch are retained for ongoing stability tests. Any batch that does not meet the Australian and Chinese government standards is discarded. The Chinese factories that manufacture our formulas are certified GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) facilities, licensed and inspected by the Australian Health Department. They are also Chinese government GMP licensed and inspected to meet the standards of the Department of Health of the Peoples Republic of China.

Quality Control addressing the Heavy Metals issue

We often receive enquiries from practitioners as well as patients concerning the standards for purity that are followed in the production of the Sun Herbal formulas. This matter falls under the requirements of the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) for the regulation of complementary healthcare products. There are standards for maximum allowable levels of toxic (or heavy) metals, bacteria, molds and fungi, pesticide residues as well as assessment of the risk of transmission of Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSEs, i.e. mad cow disease). These are primarily based on the British Pharmacopoeia (BP) and, in relation to herbal medicines unique to China, on the Pharmacopoeia of the Peoples Republic of China (PPRC). The first requirement is that herbal medicines are manufactured in a factory that complies with the Australian Code of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) for Medicinal Products which is based entirely on the international standard, Guide to Good Manufacturing Practices for Medicinal Products, published by the Pharmaceutical Inspection Cooperation Scheme (PIC/S). Compliance with the Australian Code of GMP is ascertained by carrying out prelicensing audits and, thereafter, regular on-site audits of manufacturers of medicinal products. This ensures, amongst other things, the accuracy and reliability of the tests and measurements that are carried out by the manufacturer. TREATMENT PROTOCOLS CM105 Andrographis ANTITOX Formula CM133 Lonicera, Forsythia, Mulberry & Chrysanthemum COLD & FLU Formula A) SIGNS OF ACUTE INFECTION Early stage conditions need to be treated with high dosage until relief is obtained generally about 3 to 5 days. In many cases, particularly influenza with pronounced fever and general malaise, it is best that both formulas be taken together. A sample protocol would be 4 capsules of Cold & Flu Formula (CM133) together with 2 capsules of Antitox Formula (CM105), every three hours, with 4-5 doses spread throughout the day. In order to enhance absorption, the capsules should be taken at leaser half an hour away from meals. Once symptomatic relief has been obtained, the dosage of Cold & Flu Formula (CM133) can be reduced to the standard 3 capsules, twice daily and the Antitox Formula (CM105) discontinued. This is because several of the herbs in this formula provide symptomatic relief, so the infection may not be completely resolved by the time the patient is symptom free. B) PREVENTATIVE TREATMENT When there has been close contact with an infected person, the following should be taken as soon as possible, and repeated one or two times within the next 12 hours (e.g. first dose on arriving home at 6:00pm, second dose before bed, third dose first thing the next morning): Cold & Flu Formula (CM133): 4 6 capsules plus Antitox Formula (CM105): 2 3 capsules
