Helping Hands gives summer update
It continues to be a very busy summer for Helping
Hands. On June 12th, the long awaited Miracle Sun-
day Service was held at Ensley Park. Nearly $7,000 was
raised toward the cost of the new facility to be constructed
for Helping Hands. It was a great evening of music and
fellowship and a nice offering was raised for the facility.
With this offering, and other recent donations, Helping
Hands is now up to $23,000 in its building fund with
the goal of raising $150,000 for the project. The Helping
Hands Board of Directors expresses its sincere gratitude
to everyone in the community who is helping the minis-
try to reach its goal and help to fulfll its new vision.
Helping Hands is also very excited about the growth
(literally) of its community garden project which is oc-
curring on the grounds of Heritage United Methodist
Church. This project will result in a multitude of fresh
vegetables being put to use later this summer and fall.
Many people are to be thanked for their donations, la-
bor, equipment, and efforts on behalf of this community
garden including Rick Fahner, Paul Eickenroth, Ralph
Kindel, Saenz Greenhouse (Morley & Sparta), Kim Hack-
bardt, Cedar Springs Mill & Supply, Lodden Orchards,
Heritage United Methodist Church, United Way & the
MSU Extension offce. There are many others too numer-
ous to mention who have faithfully given their time and
energy to this project. Thank you everyone!!
Helping Hands also reminds the community that they
are now open one evening per month now to assist any-
one in need who may not be able to come during the out-
reachs normal hours of Monday, Wednesday & Thursday

Jazz from Denmark!
On Wednesday, July 6, two jazz bands
from the Horsens, Denmark Music School
played a concert in Howard Citys Ensley
Park. The band stayed in homes of area res-
idents and by all accounts, greatly enjoyed
the hospitality of their hosts.
The band was awarded the Key to the
City from Village President Mike Scott and
each member was given a commemorative
tee shirt, created by Jerry Kennedy and
sponsored by the village of Howard City
and the Panhandle Area Chamber of Com-
merce.
The band comes to the United States as
part of the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camps In-
ternational Exchange Program. The people
of Horsens have hosted bands from Blue
Lake Fine Arts Camp in 2004, 2006 and
2010. The Tri County Band Boosters make
arrangements for the group to come to the
area.
The Horsens Music School Big Band and
younger WannaBe Jazz Bands come from
the town of Horsens, Denmark. Horsens is
a town of 80,000 on the Jutland peninsula
in eastern Denmark, about 150 miles from
Copenhagen.
Since their start in 1993, the bands have
been performing traditional big band music
in the style of Ellington and Count Basie as
well as arrangments of the rock, latin and
soul variety.
The Music School in Horsens has more
than 1,400 students from infants to 25 years
old. The bands have traveled throughout
Europe and the U.S. to critical acclaim.
The bands are led by Inger Due. Ms.
Due has a masters degree in music from
the Music Conservatory of Jutland and is
an accomplished trombonist and pianist.
With excellent soloists (especially Mads
Kirkegard on tenor sax and Jonas Due on
trumpet), the band delighted a large crowd
with such classics as Harlem Nocturn, Fly
Me to the Moon (with wonderful vocals by
Sidsel Sorensen) and Caravan by Duke El-
lington. The band also performed a concert
Thursday evening in Blue Lake Fine Arts
Camp Stuart Shell.
Thank you to our local host families

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR:
Keep business here
TO THE EDITOR:
I still Cant Believe It!!
On Thursday, June 30, I attended a
special meeting of the township board of
appeals. The purpose of the meeting was
a request for a zoning variance by Powells
Excavating and Septic business located on
M82, between the village and expressway.
John Powell has operated his business
for 30 years in the township. In fact, he is
the third generation doing business in the
township.
Having been given notice by the town-
ship zoning administrator that he was in
violation of the township ordinance by
having a temporary greenhouse, selling
fowers, trees and shrubs as part of his ex-
cavating business, he was advised by his at-
torney to just apply for a variance to keep
everyone happy.
First John knew that he was not in any
violation. In fact, I served on the township
board for more than 16 years in the 1980s
and 1990s and this was all approved in
1990 during my tenure. The mindset of the
board at that time was to help local busi-
nesses grow and create jobs. But John went
ahead with the necessary paperwork to
apply for a variance. He paid the required
$450 fee to have the township planning
commission review the request and pass
their recommendations on to the zoning
board of appeals. By a 5-2 vote the recom-
mendation was to approve. I commend our
township treasurer, Roger Stedman, who
also serves on this committee, and other
members Lowell Yankee, Jeff Rosenberger,
Art Ross and Don Bowen, who voted in fa-
vor of the variance.
Next step, the zoning board of appeals,
more paperwork and another $450 plus at-
torney fees for John. So on June 30 in front
of a standing room only crowd, the fve
members of the board of appeals listened
as 20 people, many of who were local busi-
ness people and former members of town-
ship government, strongly spoke in favor of
the request. No one spoke against and so
the vote-Chairman, Kevin Harkness, Den-
nis Hess and Mike Heiss voted to approve.
So what is the problem, 3-2 in favor,
done deal right? Wrong, you see it must
pass by a 2/3 majority, not a simple major-
ity. So 3-2 represents 60 percent in favor,
but 67 percent was necessary, variance de-
nied. What happened to the recommenda-
tion by the planning commission and all
the public support? I dont understand why
anyone would want to send people outside
our township to spend their money. Local
jobs are important. I still cant believe it!
WIllETT SmITH
longtime resident and former
township treasurer
Support John Powell
lETTER TO THE EDITOR
In todays economy, one of the key core
values for economic recovery for rural or
less industrialized regions of the country;
targets the small business arena. This
has been a focal point in the media & politi-
cal platforms for years. If not mistaken, it
is also incorporated in the Reynolds Twp.
- Montcalm County Master Plan that is
jointly being updated by Offcials of both
the Township and Village.
Is Reynolds Township looking to grow
its Small Business Sector? If, the most re-
cent meeting of the Reynolds Township
Zoning Board is used as an indicator - ap-
parently, the answer is NO. For nearly two
years Reynolds Township has put up road-
blocks regarding business growth/expan-
sion on an existing parcel of commercial
property owned by Powells Excavating &
Septic Inc. This has caused hardship and
increased legal fees, for a respected and
long standing Howard City resident &
small business owner; John Powell, whose
business is located on M-82 just west of
Howard City.
John Powell over the last 20 years has
continued to grow the existing business,
started by his Father; into what it is today.
In recent years, John Powell purchased
land north of Highway M-46 just west
of Reed Road and developed Timberland,
a rural, modern-upscale community of
homes that aligns with the vision of the
Montcalm County-Reynolds Twp. Master
Plan. This new project, to date has brought
approx. 15 new homes into the Reynolds
Township area, fostering an estimated
$4,000,000 increased residential value
- which has garnered much needed addi-
tional tax revenue for both the County and
Township, not to mention the increased
business opportunity for local contractors
& business owners.
His most recent venture seasonal
landscaping materials; started over 20
years ago with topsoil, sand and gravel.
In recent years has expanded to include;
mulch, trees, shrubs & an open air green-
house. The apparent issue appears to be
more procedural. Recently, this matter
was submitted to the Reynolds Twp. Plan-
ning Commission (a cost of $450), and af-
ter review was recommended for approval
by a vote of : 5yea/2 nay. Reynolds Town-
ship advised Mr. Powell, that the mat-
ter must now be submitted to the Zoning
Board (a cost of an additional $450) for
determination. The matter was put on the
schedule of the Township Zoning Board,
date assigned & proper notifcations sent
out. The meeting was attended by several
area residents & local business owners, as
well as representatives from neighboring
Townships; supporting Mr. Powell. Af-
ter a brief discussion / review a vote was
taken, resulting in three (3) of the fve (5)
Zoning Board members voting in favor to
allow for the operation of a seasonal open
air greenhouse & display/sale of landscape
materials on the existing property (as was
supported by the Twp. Planning Commis-
sion), but was rejected by the Twp. Zoning
Board;-as approval requires a 2/3 majority
vote. It appears Reynolds Township selec-
tively benchmarks majority, to be of no
value, when a 2/3 vote is not possible, due
to the number of voting members.
I would strongly suggest that the Reyn-
olds Township Board unite in an effort to
rectify/correct this procedural issue &
commit to work with any & all Small Busi-
ness Owners and offer assistance where
needed this is what we pay taxes for
representation. We need to offer al-
ternatives and win-win solutions, not the
potential of possible litigation. Yes, in John
Powells case all of the Is and Ts may not
have been dotted and crossed in the proper
order, but please keep paramount in your
mind, this is an existing-growing business,
that is esthetically pleasing to the commu-
nity and affords a much needed service to
Reynolds Township and the surrounding
area. Now is the time to voice your opinion
to your elected & appointed offcials ... this
is a small business, that needs all of our
support to remain in operation in its exist-
ing location - we cannot afford the loss of
another business in the area.

The Panhandle Area Chamber
of Commerce welcomes Brad Pea-
sley Trucking, LLC to our mem-
bership.
Located at 15015 Edmore Rd.,
in Howard City, the trucking com-
pany hauls potatoes for area grow-
ers. With a feet of 28 trucks and
60 trailers, Brad Peasley Trucking
has 35 employees hauling approx-
imately 4,500 loads of potatoes
out of Montcalm and Mecosta
counties to various potato chip
plants in Michigan and surround-
ing states.
Starting in early August
through the frst week of June,
around 216 million pounds of po-
tatoes are hauled per Michigan
growing and storage seasons. Dur-
ing the off the season, the trucks
run to Florida, Georgia, Missouri,
North Carolina, Illinois and Indi-
ana to load potatoes to service the
same plants.
With a large percentage of
the loads hauled to Frito Lay, an
interesting fact is necessary! It
takes approximately 4 pounds of
whole potatoes to make 1 pound
of chips.
Thank you for joining the
Chamber, and welcome to our
Business Family.

2011 Montcalm County 4H Fair
The 2011 Montcalm County 4H Fair will go down in history as our most successful
fair ever. The opening of the new fairgrounds combined with nearly perfect weather
brought in more guests than anyone can remember to the fair. Thank you for coming
out to see us, meet us and greet us at our new home.
There were many individuals, groups, and businesses responsible for this success.
First of all we would like to thank the generous donors to the new fairgrounds project.
Without them we wouldnt have had the facilities that contributed mightily to the suc-
cess of this years fair. To those who built the barns and stalls, buried the pipe, hung
the lights, and generally got our new home ready, we owe a debt of gratitude.
To the superintendents, committee members, leaders and volunteers, who dealt with
a whole new set of challenges everywhere they looked, you did it! The success of
the 4H shows and livestock sale were due entirely to your diligence and long hours
of work.
We would like to give special thanks to our carnival ride contractor, Skerbeck Broth-
ers Shows. They saw an area hard hit by the struggling economy and agreed to offer
an unprecedented ride promotion. The $10 wristband special was largely responsible
for bringing in thousands of our fair goers.
We also need to thank several of our other partners, especially the Greenville Com-
munity Church youth and youth group leaders. You ate a lot of dust, but it was only
because you were doing such a spectacular job of parking nearly twice as many cars
as weve ever parked at our fair.
All of the grandstand shows were successful this year, most of them bringing in near
record receipts. Bar 23 Rodeo and Unique Motor Sports are both local businesses
who have been with the fair for many years. They made the move to our new grand-
stand area seamless and smooth.
Several new vendors joined old favorites at the fair this year. The exhibits of cars and
farm machinery were greeted with enthusiasm by everyone. We owe a special thanks
to these businesses that helped us to nally look like a real fair.
Finally, thank you to the 4H youth. The fair is all about the youth who learn through
doing. Without their interest and enthusiasm for their animals and projects there
would be no need for our kind of fair.
It has been an honor and a privilege to work with all of the volunteers, participants
and visitors to prepare for and host the 2011 fair.
Sincerely,
The Montcalm County 4-H Fair Board

There are moments in life,
when the heart is so full of
emotion that if, by chance, it be
shaken, or into its depths like
a pebble, drops some careless
word, it overows, and its
secret, spilt on the ground like
water, can never be gathered.
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
(1807-1882)
After all, Jewish tradition
teaches that each soul comes
into the world both to learn and
to teach. It could be that you came to teach what I came to
learn! I need you. The web is incomplete without you. You
would not have been born if your part was not critical.
Marcia Prager, excerpt, pg. 45, the Path of Blessing
Look not mournfully into the past, it comes not back again.
Wisely improve the present, it is thine. Go forth to meet the
shadowy future without fear and with a manly heart.

Hair
A reader recently asked about Hair. Socially hair is a very important thing. Every day I hear complaints about hair. Too
much. Too much in the wrong places. Too little in the right places. Too curly. Too Straight. The wrong color. And on and on.
In the animal world hair and feathers are used to attract mates and partners. It is not so different with us human animals.
Healthy hair requires certain conditions. Hair is extruded up from the hair follicle. In the follicle all the ingredients to make
the hair shaft are assembled, much like the process of tooth paste being extruded out through the top of the tube. If the
correct ingredients are not brought to the hair follicle by the blood vessels, normal hair cannot be produced. So, good
blood ow is needed. Protein, amino acids, fats, oils, carbohydrates, minerals, and vitamins are all needed to create this
amazing lament, hair.
The little factories that make the bers of hair are affected by hormones. Thyroid, testosterone, progesterone, estrogen
and many more hormones are like a labor force that may call a strike. They are affected by stress. Stress management is
a must for balanced hormones. If needed get a saliva test and take natural Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement if the
hormones are out of balance.
Existing hair can be damaged and broken by physical trauma like hair twirling or wearing caps and hair bands. Hair shafts
can also be damaged by the chemicals in hair care products.
Genetics play a role. So in order to have great healthy hair on your head be sure to pick the right parents. Oh, well. Even
if you did not pick the right parents, we know from Epigenetics, that keeping a healthy terrain around the hair follicle may
overcome some of the effects of the bad hair genetics.
Elimination of toxins in the blood is a must. Toxins like tobacco, alcohol, coffee, pop, and inammatory foods have a huge
negative impact on our hair. Other things like lead, mercury, cadmium, trans fats, chemicals from shampoo, perm solutions,
coloring all can hurt the hair as it is being made. Trans fats which include vegetable oil, deep fried
food, animal fat (especially feed-lot beef and pork) are damaging to hair. Over washing the hair, lack
of brushing (scalp oil is brought down the hair shaft by brushing), excess heat and too much direct
sunshine can fry the hair.
Nutrients, amino acids, healthy oils, and sugars are needed. Hair has to have oils like olive oil and
ax seed oil, as well as ber and complex carbohydrates from vegetables. Chondritin, Glucosamine,
and MSM (which we get from animal cartilage and gelatin) are essential for healthy hair, skin, and
nails. Silica, silver, tin, other trace minerals, Vitamins E and D3 are a must. Chia seed gel is highly
benecial.
Your hair is a good barometer of the health of the rest of your body. If it is unhealthy, thin, weak
and wispy, maybe other things are not so healthy either. Make some changes.
Put Your Health in Your Own Hands. Bob Huttinga PA-C. 989-352-6500.

Do you have a disabled family mem-
ber? Under the Americans with Dis-
abilities Act (ADA) if you are a victim
of an adverse decision based on your
relationship with a person who has a
disability, you may have an associa-
tion discrimination claim for money
damages.
Work denied? For example, if youre
competent, employable, and qualied
yet youre denied a job, it could be be-
cause the employer thought you might
have to be absent frequently to care for
your disabled relative. ADA prohibits
the potential employer from refusing
to hire you. You cant be refused work
because your relative is disabled, so
ADA provides you a recourse.
Employers better option. An em-
ployer in this situation should rethink
the risk of liability for breaking the
law. Far better to hire the qualied
you and expect top performance and
good attendance. Then if you violate
the employers attendance policy, the
employer can dismiss the you without
fear. Why? Because failing to hire due
to fear of what might happen because
of you attending to your disabled rela-
tive, is illegal, but dismissal for viola-
tion of a work policy is legal, even if it
is because you opted to care for your
disabled relative instead of coming to
work.
Not accommodating. Employers are
not required to offer the nondisabled
employee an alternative or a reason-
able accommodation because of a dis-
abled relative. But if an employee can
show that (1) the employee was quali-
ed for the position; (2) the employee
was subject to an adverse employment
action (refused work or let go); (3) the
employee was known to be associated
with a disabled individual; and (4) the
adverse employment action occurred
under circumstances that raise a rea-
sonable inference that the disability of
the relative was a determining factor in
the decision, the employee will have
the prima facie case. Which could
make the employers bank balance feel
disabled too.
