CINCINNATI (AP) Parts of Ohio can expect to sweat through more broiling heat combined with high humidity that will make it feel even hotter. A National Weather Service heat advisory for counties in western and central Ohio says conditions today could make it feel as hot as 105 degrees throughout the region. Forecasters caution that heat stroke and other heatrelated illnesses are a risk and that anyone spending a lot of time outside should take frequent rest breaks out of the heat and drink a lot of water. LIMA (AP) A flood of donations has paid for surgery for a dog apparently injured during a store break-in. Owner David Murphy says his Jack Russell terrier, Cindy, is grouchy after an operation on Friday that fixed her damaged front leg with a plate and screws. Murphy says he found Cindy injured on July 10 when he went to check on her at his leather goods store, which was closed that day. He also found a tennis racket he believes a burglar used to beat the dog. The owner says donors contributed more money than was needed for the dogs surgery. Hes making the extra available for others who need animal care.

Phone hacking scandal brings resignations

By JILL LAWLESS and MEERA SELVA Associated Press LONDON Britains spreading phone hacking and police bribery scandal forced two of Londons top police officers to resign in less than 24 hours and prompted Prime Minister David Cameron to call for an emergency session of parliament. Scotland Yard chief Paul Stephenson stepped down Sunday night, followed out the door today by Assistant Commissioner John Yates. Yates was the official who decided two years ago not to reopen police inquiries into phone hacking and police bribery by tabloid journalists, saying he did not believe there was any new evidence to consider. Detectives reopened the investigation earlier this year and now say they have the names of 3,700 potential victims. The high-profile resignations have made it even harder for Cameron to contain the intensifying scandal that is threatening his leadership and knocking billions off of Rupert Murdochs global media empire. Parliament was to break for the summer on Tuesday after lawmakers grilled Murdoch, his son James and Murdochs former British chief executive Rebekah Brooks in a highly anticipated public airing about the scandal. Cameron, however, wanted lawmakers to reconvene Wednesday so I can make a further statement. Cameron spoke in Pretoria, South Africa, on the first day of a two-day visit to Africa. He had planned a longer trip but cut it short as his government faces a growing number of questions about its cozy relationship with the Murdoch empire during a scandal that has taken down top police and media figures with breathtaking speed. Opposition leader Ed Miliband said Cameron needed to answer a whole series of questions about his relationships with Brooks, James Murdoch and Andy Coulson, the former News of the World editor that Cameron later hired as his communications chief. Coulson resigned from that post in January and is one of 10 people who have been arrested in the scandal.

OBITUARIES

At the moment, he seems unable to provide the leadership the country needs, Miliband said. Cameron insisted his Conservative-led government had taken very decisive action by setting up a judgeled inquiry into the wrongdoing at the now-defunct Murdoch tabloid News of the World and into the overall relations between British politicians, the media and police. We have helped to ensure a large and properly resourced police investigation that can get to the bottom of what happened, and wrongdoing, and we have pretty much demonstrated complete transparency in terms of media contact, Cameron said. Still, Cameron is under heavy pressure after the resignations of Stephenson and Yates, and Sundays arrest of Brooks a friend of his on suspicion of hacking and police bribery. Brooks was detained and questioned for nine hours Sunday before being released on bail. Her lawyer, Stephen Parkinson, released a defiant statement today professing her innocence.

Robert W. Croft, 86, of Indian River, Mich. and formerly of Spencerville, died at 2:40 p.m. Sunday at the Cheboygan Hospice Center in Cheboygan, Mich. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Thomas E. Bayliff Funeral Home in Spencerville, where arrangements are incomplete.

NEW PHILADELPHIA (AP) Police are cautioning that a wolf may be roving in the same area of northeast Ohio where people have reported seeing what they thought was a mountain lion. Ohio lawmaker resigns after drunken driving charge in Indiana

COLUMBUS (AP) An Ohio state representative whose arrest in Indiana this spring on a drunken driving charge came to light several weeks ago announced Sunday that he was resigning, effective Aug. 2. Cincinnati-area Republican Rep. Robert Mecklenborg said in a statement that his recent actions have become a distraction from the Legislatures work, and he apologized for any pain and embarrassment he caused his relatives and the people he represented. I will be forever grateful to the many constituents and colleagues who have urged me to stay, but I believe it is in the best interests of my family and my constituents to step aside during this difficult time, he said. Mecklenborg, an attorney, is married and has three children, according to his biography on the Ohio House website. The third-term lawmaker has pleaded not guilty to the drunken driving charge and has a court date scheduled for July 26. Arrest and court records showed the 59-yearold Mecklenborg failed several sobriety tests when he was pulled over by an Indiana state trooper on April 23. He had a female passenger, and his blood alcohol content was registered at 0.097 percent. Bob has admitted his mistakes and, while difficult, I

believe he has made the appropriate decision to step down as a member of the Ohio House of Representatives, House Speaker William Batchelder, a Medina Republican, said in a statement Sunday that praised Mecklenborg as a dedicated public servant and thanked him for his service. Batchelder previously said Mecklenborg was seeking treatment but didnt offer further explanation. The Republican Party in Mecklenborgs home county also supported his decision. Before these recent personal revelations, Rep. Mecklenborg served his constituents diligently and he was among the most effective legislators in this state, Hamilton County Republican Party chairman Alex Triantafilou said in a statement. Bob and his family will be in our thoughts as they move forward. Mecklenborgs arrest surfaced late last month, a day after he delivered an impassioned floor speech and cast a vote in support of House Bill 125, which would ban abortions at the first detectable fetal heartbeat. Batchelder said the representative hadnt shared the information of the arrest with House leaders. Mecklenborg said Sunday that he believed hed faithfully served his constituents by focusing on priorities such as anti-abortion legislation.

cally significant in various neighborhoods, the Enquirer reported. It said so far there are 23 historic districts and 28 landmarks with official designations. Efforts to protect the Gamble home have spanned decades, and it was added to a list of buildings that the city deemed historically significant in 1978. But Greenacres Foundation, which owns the home and is overseen by the wife of Gambles grandson, has said the property is now beyond repair and has sought to level it. Preservationists applied for the sites official historic designation in February 2010, about a week before the owner sought the demolition permit, but the historic designation wasnt given until that May. In the magistrates view, that meant the demolition permit was requested before the site was officially declared historic, so he ordered that the permit be granted. The city argues it amended its law in 2004 to require a lengthy review process before the demolition of historic structures, not only those with an official designation. Such a designation restricts demolition but not repairs, painting or other changes to a property.

Debt talks and little else on Washingtons agenda

By JULIE PACE Associated Press WASHINGTON The debt showdown isnt just the dominant issue in Washington this summer its virtually the only one getting any attention in the nations capital. From the White House to Congress, the negotiations over raising the U.S. debt limit have overshadowed or halted work on everything from job creation to the military conflict in Libya to education reform. And the debt debate has hamstrung President Barack Obamas ability to hit the road to campaign and raise money for his re-election bid. The frenetic pace of Washington often means what is news one day can fade to the background the next. But rarely does a singular issue suck up so much of the oxygen for such a sustained period. Obama hasnt traveled outside Washington in July, except for a weekend jaunt to the presidential retreat at Camp David. Lawmakers who previously met with the president only sporadically came to the White House for five straight days of talks, and will likely be back again before Aug. 2, when the Treasury Department has warned the government will default unless the debt ceiling is raised. The House and Senate both canceled weeklong breaks planned for this month so they could stay in town to work on a deal. The president has foreshadowed even more debt talk disruptions through the rest of the summer if lawmakers dont reach a compromise. We are not going to let Congress go on August recess have a one month vacation while this problem doesnt get solved, Obama said in a television interview Thursday. With the Aug. 2 deadline looming, the all-consuming nature of the talks is a nearimperative for lawmakers and the president. But because Obama and congressional leaders have essentially cleared their schedules to focus on the negotiations, other pressing national priorities are being overshadowed, or shelved completely until theres a debt deal. The debate over U.S. military involvement in Libya that was so contentious just last month, for example, has garnered barely a mention from the White House or Congress in recent weeks. The issue hasnt gone away Republicans and antiwar Democrats still question Obamas legal authority to keep the U.S. engaged in the Libya bombing campaign but GOP lawmakers have insisted that dealing with the

IT WAS NEWS THEN

One Year Ago In an effort to help the elderly, those avoiding a DUI charge and others, rural Putnam resident Colleen Dunbar recently started a taxi cab charge. My husband, Jim, and I decided to start a taxi business in Putnam County to see if we could help out the community. Dunbar said her inspiration was to help the elderly, as well as those needing a ride home from a party. 25 Years Ago 1986 Colonel Jennings American Legion Auxiliary recently held its annual picnic meeting at the Legion Hall. President Lucy Elling called the meeting to order and chaplain Mary Sergeant read a prayer. Secretarys report was given by Sheila Korte. The treasurers report was given by Margaret Schimmoeller. Winners at cards were Veronica Grubenhoff, high and Annie Saum, low. The Dynamite Dodgers improved their record to 7-4 with a 5-4 win over the Home Run Hitters in girls 5-6-7 softball. Leading hitters for the Dodgers were Chris Hughes, double; Tina Sheeter, double and RBI; Angie Hawk, double and RBI; Diana Schurger, triple and double, and Heather Truesdale, double and RBI. Todd Schilling of Fort Jennings, a senior at Ottoville High School, was among 25 outstanding high school students from across the nation selected to participate in Rose-Hulman Institute of Technologys two-week summer computer program. Named to the team were Tod Spieles, Doug Weaver, David Will, Robert Looser, Gary Huysman, John Wulfhorst, Michael Teman, Steve Doyle, Ben Hickey, David Kimmet, Steve Clark, Robert Spieles, Charles Fischer, Terry Wisher, Rick Dunlap and John Adams. Coletta Wrasman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Wrasman of Delphos, received the habit and white veil of the Sisters of the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ at services conducted July 16 in Ancilla Domini Convent in Donaldson, Indiana. At that time she also received the name of Sister Mary Clareann. Despite rumors to the contrary, there is no danger in drinking city water in any section of the city, according to Irvin Hanf, service directors. The rumors started as a result of a large deposit of sulfur in the drinking water in a portion of the north section of the city, waterworks department spokesmen explained. 75 Years Ago 1936 After several weeks of remodeling, the new front of the Boston Store has been completed and presents a handsome appearance. It is of the very latest design, such as is seen frequently in the metropolitan shopping districts. Louis Sanders, the manager, stated that all new window fixtures of the very latest designs have been purchased and the front is now one of the most effective in the business district. Coach Gilbert Smith, who has been coaching at Defiance College since leaving his position as coach at Jefferson High in this city, has been elected head coach of Defiance High School. Coach Smith has many friends in Delphos who will be pleased to know of his selection as head coach of Defiance High and will wish him well in that position. A tennis tournament is to be held at Waterworks Park starting July 27. Plans for this meet are now being outlined and entries are now being received. Those desiring to make entry should get in touch with Elmer Scherger or Frank E. Kurth. The trophy and medals will be on display in the window at the Old National Bank Building as soon as they arrive.

Dalai Lama meets Obama

WASHINGTON (AP) President Barack Obama held a White House meeting Saturday with the Dalai Lama, a fellow Nobel Peace laureate, hours after China called on the U.S. to rescind an invitation that could sour relations with Beijing. The Tibetan spiritual leader has been in Washington for an 11-day Buddhist ritual. Thousands of expatriate Tibetans joined a 76th birthday celebration Wednesday for the Dalai Lama, whos just relinquished leadership of Tibets government-in-exile. The White House said that during the 45-minute private session in the Map Room, Obama underscored the importance of the protection of human rights of Tibetans in China. In a statement issued after the meeting, the White House also said Obama reiterated his support for the preservation of Tibets religious, cultural and linguistic traditions. Obama restated U.S. policy that it does not support Tibetan independence, a goal that the Dalai Lama said he also does not seek. In a nod to the criticism from Beijing, Obama also stressed to the Dalai Lama that he considers a cooperative relationship between the United States and China to be important, according to the White House statement. In remarks after the meeting forwarded by Kate Saunders from the International Campaign for Tibet, the Dalai Lama said of his visit with Obama: Firstly we developed a very close sort of feeling for each other. He said Obama expressed his concern over basic human values, such as human rights and religious freedoms. So naturally he shows genuine concern about suffering in Tibet and other places. A Chinese crackdown led the Dalai Lama to flee into exile in India in 1959. China says hes welcome to return if he drops his separatist activities, accepts Tibet as an inalienable part of China and recognizes Taiwan as a province of China.

Accusations fly over Medicare board

By RICARDO ALONSOZALDIVAR Associated Press WASHINGTON So long death panels. Hello rationing board. An independent panel authorized by President Barack Obamas health care law to control excessive Medicare cost increases is drawing heavy fire from Republicans. Nearly every health industry lobbying group is pushing for its repeal, as are some consumer advocates. GOP lawmakers call it a rationing panel, and at least one has suggested seniors will die from its decisions. But dont look for the Independent Payment Advisory Board to start chopping any time soon. It doesnt exist yet. Known as IPAB, the board may not be appointed for another couple of years, and remains in suspended animation to see if the brouhaha dies down. IPAB has the power to force Medicare cuts if costs go up beyond certain levels and Congress fails to act. Although Medicares longterm finances are troubled, its unclear if short-run costs will rise enough over the next decade to trigger the boards intervention. If that happens, the law explicitly forbids IPAB from rationing care, shifting costs to retirees or restricting benefits. Senior citizens will lose control over what they actually get in Medicare, GOP presidential candidate Michele Bachmann told conservative bloggers in Minneapolis last month, because a politically appointed 15-member board thats unelected and unresponsive to the will of the people called IPAB will make the decisions about what care we get and what care we dont. After their own plan to essentially privatize Medicare for future retirees ran into trouble, Republicans became more vocal about IPAB. At a press conference of the GOP Doctors Caucus, Georgia Rep. Phil Gingrey suggested the board could leave a trail of bodies. Under this IPAB ... a bunch of bureaucrats decide whether or not you get care, such as continuing on dialysis or cancer chemotherapy, said Gingrey, an ob-gyn physician. Ill guarantee you, when you withdraw that, the patient is

debt should take precedence. The nations persistently high unemployment rate did manage to grab the spotlight briefly last week, after a disastrous report showed that job growth had nearly stalled. But there is little, if any, progress being made on legislation that would directly lead to job creation. Even passage of three key freetrade deals that both Obama and Republicans say will support jobs in the U.S. has been stymied by the debt talks, with administration officials putting some of the blame for the delay in ratifying the agreements on the tense partisan atmosphere created by the debt ceiling debate. And forget about the overhaul of the controversial No Child Left Behind education law the administration wanted lawmakers to finish by the time the school year starts this fall. Congress has made so little progress that the Education Department warned its coming up with a plan B to give schools relief from the federal mandates if lawmakers fail to act. While Obama continues to be briefed and hold private meetings on issues unrelated to the debt talks, the White House has limited Obamas public appearances during the last week almost exclusively to news conferences, statements or photo opportunities related to the negotiations.

Moderately confused

WASHINGTON Most would agree that one would have to stoop pretty low to question the story of a mans mothers death. But what if that deathbed story were the locus of a sweeping policy that encompassed a huge slice of a nations economy? And what if the individual who told the story were the president of the worlds most powerful nation? On the same day that President Obama peevishly walked out of debt-ceiling negotiations with congressional leaders, The New York Times reported that the White House had declined to challenge an account in a new book about Obamas most compelling argument for health care reform the tale of his mother Ann Dunhams final days fighting with insurance companies about coverage for her cancer treatment. No one who followed the 2008 presidential race could have missed the story, which Obama told more than once, of Dunhams death from uterine and ovarian cancer at age 52. As told by Obama, his mother was fighting until her last breath with an uncaring insurance company about payments for her treatment. The company wouldnt pay, Obama reported, because his mothers cancer was considered a pre-existing condition.

Eliminating pre-existing conditions as an obstacle to insurance coverage was a central tenet of health care reform and the Affordable Care Act that has resulted. I will never forget my own mother, as she fought cancer in her final months, having to worry about whether her insurance would refuse to pay for her treatment, Obama told a sympathetic nation. The story touched hearts and swayed judgments. How awful. How could a compassionate country tolerate such cruelty? Life is a pre-existing condition, after all. And besides, one wouldnt dare challenge a mans memory of his mamma. We all have a mom and its staggering to consider having to watch her suffer through the indignity of death and the indifference of faceless corporations. Meanwhile, of all the things that are off-limits to scrutiny or skepticism, Cancer and Mother top the list. Combine the two in a personal story and you are untouchable. Thus, the story of Obama, Ann Dunham and corporate Americas inhumanity toward pre-existing conditions became an inviolate holy trinity of immense political power. If only it had been true. It is too much to say that Obama told an intentionally tall tale to mislead the pub-

going to die. But IPAB an unusual delegation of power by Congress may exist only on paper for a long while. The administration seems in no rush to set it up. Just this spring, Obama had proposed beefing up IPAB to squeeze more out of Medicare. But as opposition grew, and prominent House liberals and AARP voiced their own objections, the administration downplayed that idea. In recent testimony before two House committees, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius described IPAB as just a backstop and a failsafe. If Congress is actually paying attention to the bottom line of Medicare, IPAB is irrelevant ... and it never triggers in, she said. Obama hasnt made any moves to set up the new agency, said Sebelius, but has only consulted about possible board candidates. Those members would have to be confirmed by the Senate, a fight the administration may be unwilling to pick when it cant even get Medicare chief Don Berwick approved.

lic. But it is also incorrect to say that he told a true story. According to Janny Scott, a New York Times writer and author of the book A Singular Woman: The Untold Story of Barack Obamas Mother, Dunhams cancer treatments were covered by her employers insurance policy. She was denied disability insurance, which would have helped Dunham pay her deductible or unreimbursed medical costs. These apparently ran into the hundreds per month. A distinction without a difference? This is a question for Americans to decide. Yes, its true that Dunham was denied disability and she hired her son, whom she identified as her lawyer, to pursue legal recourse. But it is false that she was denied coverage of her treatment, as Obama clearly said. On Wednesday, the White House did not dispute Scotts rendering of events, which she gleaned from correspondence between Dunham and Cigna, the company that held Dunhams disability insurance

policy. Presidential spokesman Nicholas Papas said, The president has told this story based on his recollection of events that took place more than 15 years ago. We can all understand memories dimmed by the passage of time, though some memories demand greater accountability. Obama might have checked his facts more carefully. Not only did he represent his mothers interests at the time and, presumably, have legal notes and correspondence in his own files, but he knew he would use the anecdote to make his argument for health care reform. Surely he might have expected that someone eventually would fact-check his account. Papas maintains that the presidents story, if not exactly as Americans may have understood it, still stands as commentary on the impact of pre-existing condition limits on insurance protection from health care costs. This would be a reasonable argument except that disability insurance, which is usually intended to cover wages lost to illness and not treatment, was never part of the debate in the health care reform act. The president likely will be forgiven this exaggeration in the service of a greater truth. But it was never, in fact, quite true.

Japan wins 1st World Cup title in penalty shootout

By NANCY ARMOUR The Associated Press FRANKFURT, Germany Their countrys misery was never far from their hearts. Thousands dead or missing. Villages erased. Homes destroyed. The players on Japans womens World Cup team invoked the slow recovery from a devastating tsunami and earthquake time and again. Whatever they could do, they vowed, they would. True to their word, the gleaming World Cup trophy will ride back on the plane with them a prize, they hope, that will lift the gloom, even if only for a short while. Before we went to the match tonight we had some commentary on television and we heard comments on the situation in Japan, coach Norio Sasaki said after Japan upset the Americans for the World Cup title in a riveting final Sunday night, 3-1 on penalty kicks, after coming from behind twice in a 2-2 tie. We wanted to use this opportunity to thank the people back home for the support that has been given. This was Japans first appearance in the final of a major tournament and it hadnt beaten the Americans in their first 25 meetings, including a pair of 2-0 losses in warm-up games a month before the World Cup. But the Nadeshiko pushed ahead, playing inspired soccer and hoping their success could provide even a small emotional lift to their nation, where nearly 23,000 people died or were reported missing in the March 11 catastrophe. Following each of their games in Germany, the players made a solemn parade around the field with a banner that read, To our Friends Around the World Thank You for Your Support. Before Japan upset Germany in the quarterfinals, Sasaki showed his players images of the destruction to remind them of their higher purpose. Brazil. They simply couldnt pull off one last thriller. The players were patient. They wanted to win this game, Sasaki said. I think its because of that the Americans scored only two goals. The Americans squandered countless chances before Abby Wambach scored in the 104th minute of overtime to give the U.S. a 2-1 lead. But Homare Sawa flicked in a corner kick in the 117th to tie it. It was the fifth goal of the tournament for Sawa, who led all scorers in her fifth World Cup. We ran and ran, Sawa said. We were exhausted but we kept running. The Americans had beaten Brazil on penalty kicks in a quarterfinal but they didnt have the same touch Sunday. Give feisty goalkeeper Ayumi Kaihori credit for some of that. Chirping and yelling, she showed no fear as she faced the Americans. Never mind that she is just under 5-7 and the goal is 8 feet high and 24 feet across. Shannon Boxx took the first U.S. shot and it banged off Kaihoris right leg as she dove. After Miyama made her penalty, Lloyd stepped up and sent her shot soaring over the crossbar. As the crowd gasped, Lloyd covered her mouth in dismay. After Kaihoris impressive 2-handed save on a shot by Tobin Heath, Mizuho Sakaguchi converted Japans third kick. One more and Japan would win the title. Wambach made her penalty kick but Saki Kumagai buried hers and the rest of the Japanese players raced onto the field. This is a team effort, Kaihori said. In the penalty shootout, I just had to believe in myself and I was very confident. Its been 12 years since the United States has won the World Cup and these players were certain they were the ones to break the drought. Theyd needed to beat Italy in a 2-game playoff just to get into the World Cup, then lost two games in a 3-month span, an unusual bad streak for the defending Olympic champions. After easy wins in their first two games in Germany, the Americans lost to Sweden their first loss ever in World Cup group play. But they rallied with one of the most riveting finishes ever in a World Cup game mens or womens against Brazil in the quarterfinals. Down a player for almost an hour and on the verge of making their earliest exit ever from a major tournament, Wambachs magnificent, leaping header in the 122nd minute tied the game. The Americans beat Brazil on penalty kicks and, just like that, a nation was hooked. Hollywood celebrities, pro athletes, even folks who dont know a bicycle kick from a Schwinn were captivated by the U.S. women and charmed by their grit and cando attitude that is uniquely proudly American. But it was not to be. Not this time. Not against a team and a nation to whom the victory meant so much more than just a title. It just seemed like all of Japan suffered so much, Wambach added. It seemed like their country needed them to win more than ours.
Copa America --- Paraguay 2, Brazil 0 - SO LA PLATA, Argentina Paraguay advanced to the Copa America semifinals on Sunday by defeating defending champion Brazil 2-0 in a penalty shootout after the game was 0-0 following extra time. Paraguay goalkeeper Justo Villar stopped Thiago Silvas shot and Elano, Andre Santos and Fred also missed for Brazil, which was eliminated from the South American competition a day after host Argentina lost to Uruguay. Brazil dominated from the start but couldnt capitalize on its scoring opportunities due to a great performance by Villar. Paraguay will face Venezuela, which beat Chile later Sunday, Wednesday. Uruguay and Peru, which eliminated Colombia on Saturday, will meet in the semifinal Tuesday. This will be only the second time since 1987 that the final will not include either Brazil or Argentina. In 2001, Colombia defeated Mexico 1-0. Paraguay advanced despite not winning any of its four matches. In San Juan, Argentina, Venezuela reached the Copa semifinals for the first time as Oswaldo Vizcarrondo and Gabriel Cichero scored either side of halftime to beat Chile 2-1 on Sunday. Humberto Suazo equalized briefly for Chile in the second half. Venezuela is unbeaten in four games at the Copa America and has been the surprise team in a surprising tournament. Bolton 3, Orlando City 1 ORLANDO, Fla. Martin Petrov had a goal and an assist to lead Bolton of the English Premier League to a 3-1 win over Orlando City of the US Pro League in an international exhibition Sunday night. Petrov, a Bulgarian national in his second season at Bolton, assisted on Kevin Davies header in the 14th minute and scored in the 39th from 14 yards out. Petrov joined Bolton last season after a successful stint with Manchester City, scoring three goals last season including one against Manchester United but went relatively quiet in the second half. Orlando City tied it 1-all in the 28th minute when Matt Luzunaris, on loan from the San Jose Earthquakes of MLS, broke an offsides trap to beat Bolton keeper Adam Bogdan. Bolton regained the lead in the 37th minute on a goal by Darren Pratley. The second half was mostly uneventful as both teams cleared their benches. Orlando Citys Kevin Molino had a late goal disallowed for offsides. Bolton, a FA Cup semifinalist last season, was playing its second of a 3-match preseason trip

LIMA JUNIOR GOLF Newman edges Stewart to win at New Hampshire

ASSOCIATION
By DAN GELSTON The Associated Press LOUDON, N.H. Ryan Newman and Tony Stewart delivered quite the 1-2 punch in New Hampshire. Newman and Stewart started first and second. They crossed the finish line that way, too. Not a bad way to stamp Stewart-Haas Racing as an organization that intends to be in the hunt for Chase spots. Newman held off Stewart, his boss and teammate, Sunday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway for his first victory of the season. Well relish this moment and figure out what we did right so we can keep doing it, Newman said. Newman and Stewart made it the first front-row start for SHR in qualifying Friday and they followed up with firstand second-place finishes for the first time on race day. It was a banner weekend for SHR and both have jostled themselves in position to qualify for the Chase for the Sprint Cup Championship. Even the usually gruff Stewart enjoyed this celebration. It was a perfect day for the organization for sure, Stewart said. It was needed, too. Newman won for the first time since April 2010 in Phoenix and Stewart earned only his second top-5 of the season. It was a pair of nearflawless runs for the drivers as they gear up for a championship run. Stewart joked that he asked for just one day where something didnt go wrong with the race teams. They got it on a day when only four of the top10 drivers in the points standings had a top-10 finish. Its no secret weve been struggling this year, Stewart said. But it really shows me the depth of the people we got of trying to win for so many supporters, especially Stewart. But ease up because his boss was on his bumper? Never. He was the one I didnt mind seeing in my mirror, Newman said. He also saw the rest of the field. Denny Hamlin, Joey Logano and 5-time champion Jimmie Johnson rounded out the top five. Hamlin nipped at Newman late and made a serious push until fuel concerns forced him to ease off. As bad as I wanted to go up there and race those guys, I had to make the smart move and finish the race, he said. Johnson and Jeff Gordon, who finished 11th, both rallied from major setbacks for strong finishes. Kyle Busch, who started the race as the points leader, had tire issues, was forced to the garage and finished 36th. Carl Edwards finished 13th and retook the points lead. With some of the top drivers scuffling, Newman and Stewart stayed out front down the stretch. Newman led 119 of the 301 laps for his 15th career Cup victory and third at New Hampshire.
Gordon shakes off car woes: Jeff Gordon battled with his alternator and blew a tire on the last lap. He somehow finished 11th Sunday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in perhaps his wildest race of the season. Gordon led 19 laps, fell as far back as 35th, then rallied to run up front with the leaders. If not for a bad alternator, Gordon might have won his 85th career Sprint Cup race. He had one of the fastest cars out there when the No. 24 Chevrolet was on full power. It was just keeping it running perfectly that was a problem. Gordon radioed, Were done. Ive got no power, early in the race and plummeted a lap down to 35th. He turned off his air conditioner and brake fans which likely caused the blown tire to conserve energy. His battery was swapped multiple times on pit stops, making the 11th-

They touched us deep in our souls, star Aya Miyama recalled about the photos at the time. And they responded in kind. Joyous fans wearing Japan jerseys hugged and sang in Tokyo as they watched the players hold the trophy aloft, confetti swirling around them and flecking their hair with gold. Special newspaper editions were printed by the national papers and handed out to pedestrians in Tokyo on Monday morning, while scenes from the game were replayed constantly on television. It was the first World Cup title won by an Asian country. If any other country was to win this, then Im really happy and proud for Japan, Carli Lloyd said. Deep down inside, I really thought it was our destiny to win it. But maybe it was Japans. As the Japanese players celebrated, the Americans watched in stunned silence. Through every comeback, to every last second, they believed they were meant to be World Cup champions after their rocky year needing a playoff to qualify, a loss in group play to Sweden, the epic comeback against

in the U.S. The team concludes its trip Wednesday with an exhibition against the Houston Dynamo of MLS. Orlando City, a third-tier U.S. team, will also host Premier League side Newcastle on Saturday. MLS --- Union 3, Revolution 0 FOXBOROUGH, Mass. Carlos Ruiz and Carlos Valdes each scored within a 13-minute span early in the first half to lead the Philadelphia Union to a 3-0 win over the New England Revolution on Sunday night. Philadelphia (8-4-7) completed its recent 3-match road trip unbeaten (1-0-2), extending its unbeaten streak to five matches (2-0-3) and overtaking New York for first place in the Eastern Conference with two matches in hand. New England (3-9-7), which extended its winless streak to nine (0-6-3), hasnt won since May 14. The Revolution have scored just seven goals during their winless streak and have scored one goal or less in 16 matches. Ruiz, the 31-year old MLS veteran, netted his team-leading sixth goal in the 11th minute, while Valdes, a defender, tallied his first MLS career goal in the 24th both goals coming courtesy of some slipshod New England defense. Worsening matters for New England was the red-card ejection of midfielder Benny Feilhaber in the 65th minute for a flagrant hard tackle on Ruiz. Philadelphias Sheanon Williams scored the Unions third goal in the 93rd minute. Philadelphia, in just its second season of MLS play, not only won its Eastern Conference-best eighth match of the season but is now 5-0-2 against conference rivals. Ruiz, who dominated against the Revolution during his tenure with the Los Angeles Galaxy, finished off a well-constructed set of passes. Justin Mapp sent the ball to the far left side where Keon Daniel headed it toward the net. Ruiz charged on the ball unmolested, sticking his foot out for the go-ahead goal. Then on a free kick taken by Kyle Nakazawa, Union striker Sebastien LeToux got his head onto the ball, sending it toward the goal mouth where Valdes beat the Revolution defense, sticking his right foot out to tuck the ball into the back of the net. New England did not have a shot on goal at Philadelphia goalie Fardy Mondragon, who secured his seventh shutout of the season. Other than four corner kicks, two in each half, the Revolutions lone threat came off a Darrius Barnes header over the crossbar after a Chris Tierney corner kick in the 85th minute.

By HOWARD FENDRICH and BARRY WILNER The Associated Press Talks to end the NFL lockout will resume with the courtappointed mediator in New York today and could continue through Thursday, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press. The person spoke to the AP on Sunday on condition of anonymity because the discussions are supposed to remain confidential. The mediator, U.S. Magistrate Judge Arthur Boylan, originally had ordered representatives of the leagues owners and players to meet with

him Tuesday in Minneapolis. Now Boylan is expected to arrive in New York today to oversee talks aimed at ending the NFLs first work stoppage since 1987. The owners have a special meeting set for Thursday in Atlanta, where they potentially could ratify a new deal if one is reached by then. Any agreement also must be voted on by groups of players, including the named plaintiffs in a federal antitrust suit against the league, and the NFL Players Associations 32 team representatives. More than four months into the lockout, owners and players have made significant progress

on the framework of an agreement. But re-establishing the union and figuring out what it will take for nine NFL players including star quarterbacks Tom Brady, Peyton Manning and Drew Brees to settle that antitrust suit are among key issues blocking a deal to end the lockout, people familiar with the negotiations told the AP on condition of anonymity. The unresolved matters also include how the TV networks case, in which the players accused the owners of setting up lockout insurance, will be settled. Among the parts mostly squared away following significant progress last week: how the more than $9 billion in annual league revenues will be divided; a rookie salary system; free agency rules; a cap of about $120 million for player salaries in 2011, with about another $20 million in benefits. The lockout began March 12, when negotiations broke down and the old collective bargaining agreement expired. The NFLPA announced it was dissolving itself and would no longer be a union that could bargain for all players under labor law, instead saying it was now a trade association. That allowed players to take their chances against the

in our organization. Its been one of the weirdest years as far as weird things and bad luck happening to both of us. Newman became the 13th driver to win in Sprint Cup this year, matching the total from last season after only 19 of the 36 races. Only seven races remain until the Chase field is set. The top-10 drivers automatically earn a spot. Two spots in the Chase will go to the winningest drivers ranked between 11 and 20. Stewart is peeking outside the contenders in 11th place. Newman is in eighth. It puts us in a lot better position, thats for sure, Newman said. Newman was at home in New Hampshires Victory Lane. He also won the Modified Tour race Saturday. He choked up after taking the checkered flag as he dedicated the victory to the military and a close friend who died of cancer. There was a catch in his voice as he talked about the friend who died in April. Newman wears a bracelet in his honor. Newman drives the No. 39 Chevrolet for the U.S. Army and there was a healthy military presence in Victory Lane and at his news conference. I told him I was proud of him and it was a great day for our organization, great day for the Army, Stewart said. Newman carried the burden

place finish even more impressive. Gordon was fourth entering the final lap until the tire blew. Gordon and crew chief Alan Gustafson would rather deal with these issues now than during the Chase. Gordon has two wins and is seventh in the points, making him a near-lock to qualify for the 10-race Chase. The second Chase race is back in New Hampshire and Gordon believes if they can work out the kinks, he can win. Early exits: Kyle Busch went from hitting the 100-win mark to hitting the wall. One day after winning his 100th career NASCAR race, Busch blew a tire and slammed into the wall only 60 laps into the race. Buschs grip on the points lead evaporated and he dropped to fifth. He returned to the race 76 laps down. Busch completed 224 laps and finished 36th. Busch won the Nationwide Series race Saturday to join the 100-win club. Only Richard Petty and David Pearson have hit that milestone in NASCAR. Brad Keselowski had similar problems when he wrecked with a blown tire. Keselowski finished 35th and his chance at qualifying for the Chase took a serious blow. Hes in 23rd place and is in bad need of a victory or more. Summer Showdown: NASCAR title sponsor Sprint announced a $3 million prize as a potential payoff during a 6-week race showdown. Any driver who wins one of the five NASCAR Sprint Cup Series events between Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Bristol Motor Speedway will become a finalist for the $3 million Sprint Summer Showdown payout on Labor Day Weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway. If one of those five drivers wins at Atlanta, then the driver, the drivers charity and one race fan will each collect $1 million. For contest rules and additional information, visit sprint. com/speed. Paging Golden Tate: Seattle Seahawks receiver Golden Tate was ripped by NASCAR fans after a series of Twitter posts last week stating drivers werent athletes. Jimmie Johnson, the victim of his first barb, found humor in the posts but strongly disagreed this weekend with Tates stance. Tate eventually backed down and apologized. Are drivers athletes? Its a question elite racers have always dealt with. Newman poked a little fun at his profession after more than three hours baking in his car. He said he welcomed the upcoming week off before the Brickyard 400 on July 31. Doing what we do, youll take a week off any time you can get it, he added. This is a demanding sport. I dont know that were athletes but this is a demanding sport.

NFL in federal court under antitrust law. There is a possibility that the sides will be able to put together a tentative agreement in principle in time to keep the preseason completely intact. The exhibition opener is scheduled to be the Hall of Fame game between the St. Louis Rams and Chicago Bears on Aug. 7; as of Sunday, no preseason games had been canceled. Members of the legal and financial teams for the two groups met in New York on Saturday, while NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and NFLPA head DeMaurice Smith spoke with each other. The larger negotiating teams

that gathered for more than 30 hours of intensive face-to-face talks spread across Wednesday through Friday including owners and current or former players did not meet Saturday. Among the parts of the deal that people familiar with the negotiations told the AP are largely in place: The players portion of the leagues full annual revenues will be on a sliding scale with a floor of 46.5 percent and a ceiling of 48.5 percent. There no longer will be the old formula, under which owners got a cut off the top for various operating expenses before revenues were divided.

Clarke never lost hope on way to Open championship

By PAUL NEWBERRY The Associated Press
SANDWICH, England Darren Clarke had every reason to lose hope. It had been a full decade since he contended for a major championship, his best swings seemingly behind him as a new generation from Northern Ireland seized the spotlight. He was graying on top and pudgy around the waist, shoved aside to the role of lovable geezer with a fondness for smoke and drink. That wasnt even the worst of it; not even close. Five years ago, Clarke lost wife Heather to breast cancer, a disease she had seemingly beat until it came back with a vengeance. He buried his spouse and faced life as a single father with two young boys to raise, a guy whod had it all but suddenly found himself asking why life was so unfair. Its been a long, bumpy road, Clarke said Sunday evening. Ive had a few bad things happen to me. These days, life is looking a whole lot better. Clarke is planning to marry again and he can bring along a neat little trinket to the wedding the claret jug. A career heck, a life came full circle at Royal St. Georges, where Clarke crafted a triumph that no one saw coming except himself. He won the British Open by a comfortable three strokes but only because he never lost faith. I always believed I would get myself back up here, he said before heading out to the 18th green to collect the oldest trophy in golf. I always believed I had enough talent to challenge and win one. He teared up a bit as he thought about the one who wasnt there to share the moment, his late wife. In terms of whats going through my heart, theres obviously somebody who is watching down from up above there and I know shed be very proud of me, Clarke said. Shed probably be saying, I told you so. Indeed, this was overdue. No one had ever gone more than 15 starts in the British Open before winning and this was the 20th try for Clarke. He hardly seemed on top of his game, having dropped out of top 100 in the world and not even eligible for the last three majors. Talk about perseverance. All worth it, most definitely, he added. Its been a long journey to get here. Im 42 and Im not getting any younger. But I got here in the end. It may be the only major that I win, it may not be the only major I win. But at least Ive gone out there and did my best and my best was good enough to win. Then, it was time to celebrate. Ohhhh, what a celebration it was. When Clarke returned to the course this morning for a few more interviews and some picture-taking on the 18th green, the red, bleary eyes told it all. Clarke was solid from start to finish, holding off Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson. Three straight days in the 60s sent him to the final round with a 1-shot lead. He didnt get flustered when Mickelson ripped through the front side with a 5-under 30 despite relentless wind, in wacky conditions that kept flipping back and forth between pounding rain and bright sunshine. At one hole, Clarke teed off only after scrambling for his rain gear and couldve used sunglasses by the time he got to the green. Mickelson rolled in a 25-footer for eagle at the seventh to claim a share of the lead. Clarke came along four groups later and knocked down a 20-foot eagle of his own, stretching his advantage back to two strokes. With a cigarette curled under his fingers as he barreled down the fairways, Clarke never looked back. Lefty had a last-gasp birdie at the 10th but his putter suddenly went cold. He lipped out a 2-footer for his first bogey at 11, the wind ripped from his sails. A stupid mistake, he called it. There was nothing to it. His shoulders sagged, as if he sensed his comeback was over. He made three more bogeys coming in and even yanked his approach at the 18th into the grandstands. Clarke had one more Yank to hold off. Actually, he merely had to watch while Johnson made another huge blunder on the final day of a major. Johnson, also playing in the final group, birdied the 10th and the 12th to get within two strokes of the lead. At the par-5 14th, Johnson drove it in the fairway, then eyed the flag and pulled out a 2-iron. Definitely a go situation, he said. Instead, he went out of bounds. Johnson wound up with a double bogey instead of the birdie he needed, turning the final four holes into nothing more than a victory lap for Clarke. His stroll up 18 was met with unending applause, the loudest saved for the closing ceremony when he was introduced as the champion golfer of the year. More than that, Clarke is a man of the people. Mickelson wouldve preferred to win, of course. The British Open has always been the major that gives him the most trouble this was only his second top-10 finish and he was right there in contention on a Sunday. Still, even he didnt mind seeing Clarke collecting all the accolades. Johnson is becoming known for his major meltdowns. Last year, he threw away a 3-stroke lead at the U.S. Open with an 82 on the final day. Then, at the PGA Championship, he missed out on a playoff when assessed a 2-stroke penalty for grounding his club in a bunker he thought was a foot path on the 72nd hole. He seemed unfazed by his latest misfortune. Like I say all the time, the more I put myself in this situation, the more I learn, Johnson said. I think I did a pretty

good job. It was very tough. No one was tougher than Clarke. Despite meaningless bogeys on the last two holes, Clarke closed with an even-par 70 to finish at 5-under 275. Northern Ireland had gone 63 years since Fred Daly in the 1947 British Open without winning a major. Now it has three of the last six, with Rory McDowell and Graeme McDowell claiming consecutive U.S. Open titles. The U.S. hasnt won in that span extending its longest drought in the modern Grand Slam era, even though five of the top seven finishers at Royal St. Georges were Americans.
Viking Classic MADISON, Miss. Chris Kirk won his first PGA Tour event with a 1-stroke victory, shooting a 4-under 68 to beat Tom Pernice Jr. and George McNeill by one stroke. The 26-year-old rookie tied the tournament record by finishing 22 under, taking advantage of Annandale Golf Clubs soft greens and fairway. He broke a tie with McNeill on No. 17, hitting a 140-yard approach over water to within five feet of the hole for an easy birdie putt. The 51-year-old Pernice fell just short in his attempt to become the second-oldest winner in tour history, missing a birdie putt on No. 18. Kirk is the fifth rookie to win this season only the second time thats happened since 1970. American Century Celebrity STATELINE, Nev. Actor Jack Wagner earned his second title at the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship, holding off a latecharging Tony Romo with a 10-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole and overcoming a shot into the pond guarding the 18th. Romo eagled No. 11 after he drove the green on the 315-yard par 4. The Dallas quarterback birdied No. 13 to pull within two points in the modified Stableford scoring format that puts a premium on eagles and birdies. Both hit inside 15 feet on the par-3 17th but Romo missed his birdie attempt while Wagner made his. Romo followed Wagner into the pond on the 18th then made par while Wagner saved bogey to win 80-77. Chiquita Classic MAINEVILLE, Ohio Russell Knox shot a 6-under 66 to earn his first Nationwide Tour victory, beating Billy Hurley by three strokes. The Scot began the day with a 1-stroke lead and was never challenged at TPC Rivers Bend, finishing at 25-under 263. He moved from No. 27 to No. 5 on the season money list. The 25 top money-winners will earn PGA Tour cards for 2013. Hurley closed with six birdies on the back nine for a 64 and a career best finish. Canadian Tour WINNIPEG, Manitoba American Tom Hoge shot a bogey-free 5-under 66 to win the Players Cup. Hoge is the first player to go through a Monday qualifier and then win the event since the Canadian Tours inception in 1986.

The Associated Press NL CINCINNATI Zack Cozart hit his first major-league homer on Sunday and the Cincinnati Reds used a disputed call and a pair of wild pitches by Jaime Garcia to rally for a 3-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. The defending NL Central champs got a much-needed win against Garcia (9-4), who was 5-0 in his career against them. Cardinals shortstop Ryan Theriot was ejected while arguing a call in the sixth that set up the tying run. Garcia then threw a pair of wild pitches that let Cincinnati pull even. Ryan Hanigan singled home the tibreaking run an inning later and Cozart homered in the eighth. Homer Bailey (4-4) gave up three hits, including Lance Berkmans 25th homer, in 7 1/3 innings. Francisco Cordero improved to 18-for-23 in save chances with a perfect ninth against the heart of the Cardinals order. Phillies 8, Mets 5 NEW YORK Michael Martinez hit a 3-run shot for his first majorleague homer to back a steady outing by Kyle Kendrick and lead Philadelphia past New York for its seventh straight series win. Kendrick (5-4) singled twice and scored on Martinezs drive in the fifth inning off Mike Pelfrey (5-9). Martinez added a sacrifice fly in the seventh for a career-high four RBIs. Ryan Howard hit a run-scoring single in the first and Philadelphia took 2-of-3 from the NL East rival Mets for the fourth time this season. Jimmy Rollins had a 2-run single in a 3-run eighth aided by Jason Bays error in left field and reliever Pedro Beatos three walks. Giants 4, Padres 3, 11 innings SAN DIEGO Chris Stewart drove in the go-ahead run with a suicide squeeze in the 11th inning, then pounced on a bunt moments later to start a slick double play that helped San Francisco hold off San Diego. Emmanuel Burriss, who entered as a pinch-runner in the ninth, reached on a 1-out single off Chad Qualls (4-3) in the 11th. Burriss stole second and continued to third on catcher Kyle Phillips throwing error. With the infield in, Qualls pitched out on his first delivery to Stewart, who stayed in the game after pinch-hitting in the ninth. But on a 3-1 count, Stewart laid down a perfect bunt to easily score Burriss. The Giants stole six bases, two by Burriss, to tie a San Francisco record. Javier Lopez (5-1) pitched two innings for the win and Brian Wilson wriggled out of a jam for his 28th save in 32 chances. Braves 9, Nationals 8 ATLANTA Freddie Freeman singled home the winning run in the ninth inning following an intentional walk, giving Atlanta a victory over Washington. Ryan Mattheus (2-1) walked pinchhitter Brooks Conrad to start the bottom of the ninth. With two outs, Martin Prado stole second and the Nationals issued an intentional walk to Brian McCann, who hit a 3-run homer in the fifth. Freeman lined a 1-0 pitch into right field and Prado scored easily. Craig Kimbrel (3-2) worked a scoreless ninth. Washington left-hander Tom Gorzelanny left the game with a twisted right ankle in the third inning. Nationals All-Star reliever Tyler Clippard recorded five straight outs, four on strikeouts, before giving up Nate McLouths tying homer in the eighth. Brewers 4, Rockies 3 DENVER Shaun Marcum tossed five solid innings before leaving with a strained neck and Milwaukee held off Colorado to win consecutive road games for the first time in six weeks. Rickie Weeks, Casey McGehee and Nyjer Morgan had two hits each for Milwaukee. Milwaukee took the lead for good in the fifth and chased Rockies starter Aaron Cook (0-5).

Marcum (8-3) was cruising along until he gave up a leadoff homer to Giambi in the sixth. John Axford got his 25th save after his second straight nail-biting ninth inning. With two on, he struck out All-Star slugger Troy Tulowitzki on three pitches to end it. Diamondbacks 4, Dodgers 1 PHOENIX Daniel Hudson threw a 5-hitter, belted his first big-league home run and finished with three RBIs, almost single-handedly leading Arizona past Los Angeles. Hudson (10-5) struck out three and walked none in his second complete game of the season. Hudson connected against Ted Lilly (6-10) in the sixth, then hit a 2-run single in the seventh to make it 4-1. The Dodgers intentionally walked Xavier Nady to get to Hudson. Ryan Roberts also homered for the Diamondbacks. Pirates 7, Astros 5, 11 innings HOUSTON Pinch-runner Josh Harrison scored on a passed ball for the first of Pittsburghs three runs in the 11th and rookie Alex Presley drove in his third run of the game later in the inning to lead the Pirates over mistakeprone Houston. Harrison scored on a passed ball by catcher Humberto Quintero to make it 5-4. Presley followed with an RBI single and scored on an error by reliever Aneury Rodriguez. Pittsburgh starter Kevin Correia yielded three runs in six innings and hit a 2-run double. All-Star closer Joel Hanrahan allowed an RBI double to Chris Johnson that tied it 4-all in the eighth. He pitched a 1-2-3 ninth before Chris Leroux (1-0) worked a scoreless 10th for his first major-league win. Chris Resop allowed a solo homer to Quintero in the 11th but got his first career save. Marlins 7, Cubs 5 CHICAGO Greg Dobbs hit a 2-run homer and drove in the goahead run with a bases-loaded walk in the eighth inning, leading Florida past Chicago. After Dobbs 4-pitch walk against Kerry Wood (1-5), Logan Morrison capped the Marlins 3-run rally with a 2-run single that made it 7-4. Aramis Ramirez hit a 2-out RBI double in the bottom half but Randy Choate came in and got Carlos Pena to bounce out to end the inning. Leo Nunez worked the ninth for his 26th save. Hanley Ramirez homered during Floridas 3-run first, belting a long solo

Other records for Deathly Hallows: Part 2: best domestic gross for debut midnight shows at $43.5 million, topping the $30 million for last years The Twilight Saga: Eclipse; best domestic opening in huge-screen IMAX theaters with $15.5 million, surpassing the $12.2 million for last years Alice in Wonderland; and best worldwide IMAX debut with $23.5 million, beating the $20.4 million for Transformers: Dark of the Moon two weeks ago. This is just really a monumental event, said Hollywood.com analyst Paul Dergarabedian. The 3-D component, plus the IMAX, plus it being the last Harry Potter, it was just this convergence of things that created this incredible record. Paramounts third Transformers blockbuster, which had been No. 1 the previous two weekends, slipped to second-place with $21.3 million domestically. It remains the years top domestic hit with $302.8 million. The latest Transformers added $39 million overseas, bringing its international haul to $460 million and worldwide total to $762.8 million. Elaborate plans made to keep Casey Anthony safe

By MIKE SCHNEIDER and MATT SEDENSKY Associated Press ORLANDO, Fla. Casey Anthonys whereabouts for her first week of freedom were a closely guarded secret today, known only to a select few as she tries to start a new life after being acquitted of killing her daughter. One of her lawyers says an elaborate plan was made to protect her from people with the lynch-mob mentality. Her options for starting a new life could be limited by lawsuits pending against her, the scorn of multitudes who think she was guilty of the killing and a criminal record from her convictions for lying to police. She walked out of jail shortly after midnight Sunday. Her attorney Cheney Mason told NBCs Today Show on today that hes confident in Anthonys safety, but declined to answer questions about where she was. Shes gone, shes safe and elaborate plans had to be made to keep the people away from her, Mason said. Her life is going to be very difficult for a very long time as long as there are so many people of the lynch-mob mentality. Asked about how Anthony was paying for her fresh start, Mason replied that many volunteers have offered their help. Her notoriety could also help her earn money. Experts who have helped other notorious defendants through rough times say she will have opportunities, but it wont be easy for the 25-year-old, who was found not guilty of killing her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee, but convicted of lying to investigators. In response to a question about whether Anthony planned to cash in on her fame, her lead attorney Jose Baez told Fox News Channel late Sunday that she has certain rights as an individual in this country. Attorneys planned to handle Anthonys affairs in a dignified manner, he said. If she decides she wants to speak publicly about it, shell make that decision, he said. Baez and other attorneys didnt respond Sunday to email and phone messages left by The Associated Press, nor did a lawyer representing her father and mother. And in the Fox News interview, Baez declined to talk about his clients whereabouts or state of mind. Another former Anthony lawyer, Terry Lenamon, said he had no clue where she was headed, and that probably only a few people close to her knew. I wouldnt want anyone to know, he said. I think she needs to go underground and I think she needs to spend some time to get her life back together. Anthonys July 5 acquittal shocked and enraged many around the country who had been following the case since Caylees 2008 disappearance. Anger has spilled onto social media sites and elsewhere. Her legal team said on Friday it had received an emailed death threat. Anthony did not report her daughters disappearance for a month and was arrested after telling a string of lies about the case to police. Caylees remains were found in December 2008 near the home Casey Anthony shared with her parents. Prosecutors alleged that Anthony suffocated her daughter with duct tape because motherhood interfered with her desire for a carefree life, but her lawyers said the girl drowned in an accident that snowballed out of control. Some of the jurors who acquitted Anthony said they believe she bears some responsibility for her daughters death but that prosecutors failed to prove that she murdered the child. Anthony had remained in jail to finish a fouryear sentence for lying to investigators. With credit for the nearly three years shed spent in jail since August 2008 and good behavior, she had only days remaining when she was sentenced July 7. Her public vilification did not ease with her release from jail. A baby killer was just set free! Bree Thornton, 39, shouted as the SUV left the jail. It wont be impossible for Anthony to get a

fresh start, though it will be difficult, said Los Angeles-based attorney Thomas Mesereau. His clients have included the late singer Michael Jackson when he was charged with child molestation and actor Robert Blake when he was charged with murdering his wife. Anthony could accept requests for paid interviews, or a benefactor may be able to help her in the short term, Mesereau said. When you have that degree of celebrity, there is usually somebody who would like to get involved, Mesereau said. The problem is trusting anyone. People are willing to leak things to the media. Theyre willing to be paid off for information. Its very difficult to find people whom you can trust. Casey Anthonys relationship with her parents is strained. During trial, Anthonys defense attorneys argued that her father, George Anthony, molested Casey as a child and covered up Caylees death. He has denied both claims, and neither has been substantiated. What is known is that Casey Anthony still faces a slew of legal problems even though the criminal charges have been resolved. She has been sued for hundreds of thousands of dollars by a Texas group that searched for Caylee in the weeks after she was reported missing, and prosecutors are seeking to recoup the cost of their investigation into Caylees disappearance.

In-laws demand their own way

Tomorrows Horoscope
TUESDAY, JULY 19, 2011 During the next year, youre likely to discover two new ways to put your talents and abilities to profitable use. Properly exploited and developed, these resources will multiply your resources and earnings. CANCER (June 21-July 22) -- Although you have ample smarts upon which to draw, you could be indifferent to what your common sense is telling you and, instead of using it productively, squander your brains input. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) -- If youre putting a social gathering together, select friends who get along with one another. Even one misfit in the group could spoil the enjoyment for everybody else. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) -- Placing faith in your talents and capabilities will help make your lot in life a heck of a lot easier regardless of what you do. Conversely, if you dont think youre hot, you wont be. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23) -- Regardless of how good your intentions are, you must still be extremely careful about how you handle your close friends. One or two could still read something in your demeanor that you dont mean. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 22) -- Be careful not to make it look like youre gratifying your personal ambitions by using your friends to get back at someone you dislike and want to punish. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23-Dec. 21) -- You should make concessions instead of causing complications. If you fail to yield to those with whom youre involved, they arent apt to give an inch, either. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) -- If youre taking over a situation that another was handling poorly, make sure you do things in a manner that doesnt make it look like his or her mistakes are yours. Pluck them out as soon as you can. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) -- You might find out that you havent been on as firm a footing in your financial affairs as you thought you were. Unless you take steps to correct it now, things could get worse. PISCES (Feb. 20-March 20) -Even if most people you encounter seem to be bending over backward to assist you, one person in particular wont fit into this classification. She or he could be trying to block your path. ARIES (March 21-April 19) -- If you find yourself involved with people against whom you hold an old grudge, try to forgive and forget. Youre only hurting yourself by keeping the memory alive. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) -Know when to turn off the input of others regarding a money matter. You have a knack for finances, so dont let the negativity of others cause you to go against your conclusions. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) -- If you are indifferent to your own resourcefulness and ingenuity, achieving your goals may be difficult. Impressive attainment isnt likely to happen by ignoring your smarts.
