A 3-Day Workshop on

STRUCTURAL DESIGN OF MULTI-STOREY BUILDINGS

Date: Tue 28th - Fri 30th September, 2010 Venue: Royal Birds Hotel, Ijapo Estate, Akure Time: 9.00am - 5.00pm Daily

ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP

Multi-storey buildings are structures of three or more storeys in height, consisting usually of structural frameworks of concrete or steel. They include multi-storey office buildings, residential buildings, hospitals, schools, shopping centres, parking garages, warehouses, etc. Multi-storey buildings are commonly used because of their being able to increase the floor area of a building without increasing the area of the land on which the building is built, thereby saving land which is notably expensive, especially in cities. The subsystems or components of multi-storey building structural systems are essentially: ? Floor systems ? Resisting Systems Vertical Load ? Resisting Systems Lateral Load ? Connections ? Energy Dissipation Systems and Damping Multi-storey buildings must be designed for safety and economy. The structural system should be able to carry different types of loads, such as gravity, lateral, temperature, blast and impact loads. The design criteria of strength, serviceability, stability and human comfort must be satisfied. In particular, the floor system which carries the gravity loads during and after construction should be able to withstand occasional overloads. However, despite the requirements for stability and safety, the structure must at the same time be economical and not unnecessarily over-designed and therefore wasteful of resources. Meeting these conflicting requirements requires a structural design process that is thorough and optimizing. This course has been packaged to meet these expectations. The course will present the various design considerations that need to be addressed in the structural design and detailing of multi-storey buildings of reinforced concrete structures, including fire resistance, economy, and forming techniques. Numerous design examples will be presented. The examples will include wind load calculations, seismic force, analysis, simplified design of different slab systems, beams, columns, structural walls, and footings with emphasis on economy and structural safety.

OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE

The course has been designed and structured such that on completion, participants would be able to: ? the design methods, material specifications and structure of BS8110 Understand ? the link between the fundamental principles of Structural Mechanics Recognise and BS8110 ? the design and analysis requirements for bending and shear Understand ? of designing beams, slabs and columns in reinforced concrete to Be capable meet the requirements of BS8110 ? different forms of structural systems for multi-storey buildings Understand ? Carry out overall stability analysis on multi-storey buildings

? Use computer software for structural analysis and design of multi-storey buildings. ? structural detailing to achieve reinforcement and formwork Understand economy.

COURSE OUTLINE
The course will cover the following topics into details:
? Code Requirements ? and Optimization of Structural Systems for Multi-Storey Buildings Selection ?Analysis Frame ? of Beams and One-Way Slabs Design ? of Two-Way Slabs Design ? of Stairs and Lift Structures Design ? of Columns Design ? of Structural Walls Design ? of Footings Design ? Structural Detailing of Reinforcement for Economy ? Considerations for Economical Formwork Design ? Considerations for Fire Resistance Design ? Complete Structural Design of Multi-Storey Structures ? Computer-Aided Design

As part of the course materials, a complete worked example of the design of a Multi-Storey Car Park, taken from Structural Engineering Design in practice by R. Westbrook, BSc, C.Eng, MICE, MIStructuE & D. Walker, MSc, DipTP, C.Eng, FIStructE, MICE, MIQA will be provided and explained step-by-step by the facilitators.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

The course is targeted at Civil, Structural, Architectural, Building and Mechanical Engineers. It will particularly benefit those working in the public sector with the responsibility to check structural designs and to supervise the construction of the structures. The course is highly needed by civil & structural engineering consultants just as it will immensely benefit building and civil engineering contractors. Academic staff in the departments of civil engineering, architecture, building and mechanical engineering will gain tremendously from the program. Organisations involved in building and facilities development in the public sector will derive much benefit from the course.

FACULTY
The course will be facilitated by the following two eminently qualified and highly experienced structural engineers. One is a leading figure in the academics and the other is in the forward position in structural engineering practice in Nigeria. They are:

? Engr (Dr) Charles Uko He holds BSc(First Class Honours) in Civil Engineering from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, MSc (with Distinction) in Construction Engineering (Leeds) and Phd in Structural Engineering (Leeds). He is presently an Associate Professor of Structural Engineering at the University of Uyo, Awka Ibom State. He has authored two structural engineering books: Analysis of Indeterminate Structures and Statics and Strength of Materials. He is very active in engineering profession in Nigeria. ? Engr R A Shola Sanni Engr Shola Sanni is highly renowned in structural engineering professional practice in Nigeria. He holds MSc in Structural Engineering and he is a leading expert on wind effects and analysis on tall structures in Nigeria. He has been involved in structural analysis and design of several multi-storey buildings and has analysed and investigated many structural failures in Nigeria. He holds the rare and unique combination of membership of the Institution of Structural Engineers (MIStructE) and the Institution of Civil Engineers (MICE) of UK. Down home, he is a Fellow of both the Nigerian Society of Engineers (FNSE) and the Nigerian Institution of Structural Engineers (FNIStructE). He was formerly with the Ove Arup & Partners before establishing his own renowned practice of Sanni, Ojo & Partners.
