Our Young Audiences Artists

YA artists are committed professionals who combine a passion for their art form with the ability to educate young people and help them not only to experience the art form, but also to understand it. In this process the students develop their creativity, which enables them to connect to other academic areas and life skills. Consistent with YA-proven principles, our artists and programs emphasize creative development rather than rote learning or memorization. All our programs meet the criteria in the California State Framework for Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA).

Martin Espino
Music of Ancient Americas 100% Interactive Program

David Nigel Lloyd

Ballad Singer
David Nigel Lloyd has been telling and singing ballads with school children for over 20 years. Teachers are amazed at how quickly students of all backgrounds embrace these age-old story songs. With stirring melodies that have stood the long test of time, his ballads for schools concern sisters whose revenge is truth; frogs whose weddings go terribly awry; poets who cannot lie, and the Prickly Tree of life itself. Mr. Lloyd tells each ballads compelling story before singing it. Students often (and sometimes even teachers!) find themselves effortlessly singing along. His program approaches music and singing in a completely non-confrontational way; this is peoples music. It also cannot help but immerse students in living history and in narrative processes so important to the mastery of language arts. David Nigel Lloyd has performed for grownups in England, Ireland, Canada, and the United States. He was an Official Showcase performer at the Folk Alliance International Conference in 2011. He is an advisory board member of the National Opinion Research Councils Teaching Artist Research Program, the first national study of the teaching artist in public schools.

Martin Espino is a musical performance artist, teacher, cultural motivator, storyteller, instrument maker, a pioneer of interactive performance and scholar of the Music of the Native Americas. Since 1975 he has delighted and educated international audiences and brings the ancient sounds to life with the help of his audience; his programs fit ALL seasons, themes and ages! Martins programs speak of culture, respect, self-awareness, literacy, creativity, and peace! His interactive assemblies flow easily as the audience sings in ancient languages and plays his vast collection of native percussion. He is able to easily handle small to very large audiences. Martins most requested program is Ancient Mexico, his area of expertise. He is of Yaqui and Tepehuano Mexicano heritage. He brings a virtual museum of over 100 instruments! Programs are typically 45 minutes in length but he always says, One hour is best because with my programs, the students do not lose attention, they dont want to leave and always want to hear more!
