With the fast progress of multi-core technology, more and more computing cores can be integrated into single die, and this means future computer systems will have more and more processing units. This trend brings many challenges to the current system software. Being a solution to solve these challenges, virtualization technology has attracted much attention in recent years. It plays a major role in helping organizations to build flexible, transparent and scalable computing model to meet a variety of application requirements. It improves the efficiency of computing resources utilization and offers users personalized and pervasive computing environment. Virtualization technology has brought enormous effect to today's IT world, and it has become one of the most important technologies and research hotspots in the information field. Although server virtualization is now a mainstream technology for the data center and cluster computing communities, desktop virtualization has attracted considerable interests in recent years. Desktop virtualization has the potential to offer a new, cost efficient paradigm shift to ease the demand for the resources while maximizing return on investment. Miscellaneous technologies are achieved to construct dynamic and customized desktop environment, the research issues focus on the areas such as desktop user environment quick deployment, software automatic dispatching and dynamic configuring, ubiquitous and pervasive computing environment, application virtualization, remote display protocols. In this talk, I will discuss some recent advances in desktop virtualization field. Especially, I will talk about our desktop virtualization research work in the National 973 Basic Research Program, The Research on Fundamental Theory and Approach of Computing System Virtualization. These works include Multi-platform Supported Virtual Desktop (MSVD) and HVM supported virtual laptop environment. The design objectives and considerations are discussed in this talk, as well as the system design, performance evaluation compared with other techniques, and some system demonstrations.
