INTRODUCTION

The Hindu is an Indian English-language daily newspaper published since

1878. With a circulation of 1.46 million, The enterprise employed over 1,600 workers and gross income reached $40 million in 2010. According to the Indian Readership Survey (IRS) 2010 The Hindu is the third most widely read English newspaper in India (after the Times of India and Hindustan Times) with a readership of 21.59 lakhs. It has its largest base of circulation in South India, especially Tamil Nadu. Headquartered at Chennai (formerly called Madras), The Hindu was published weekly when it was launched in 1878, and started publishing daily in 1889. The Hindu became, in 1995, the first Indian newspaper to offer an online edition. The Hindu is published from 14 locations Chennai, Bangalore, Madurai, Coimbatore, Delhi, Hubli, Hyderabad, Kochi, Kolkata, Mangalore, Thiruvananthapuram, Tiruchirapalli, Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam. The first issue of The Hindu was published on September 20, 1878, by a group of six young men, led by , a radical social reformer and school teacher from Thiruvaiyyar near Thanjavur. Aiyer, then 23, along with his 21-yearold fellow-tutor and friend at Pachaiyappa's and four law College, M. students, T.T.

The Britishcontrolled English language local newspapers had been campaigning against the appointment of the first Indian, T. Muthuswami Iyer, to the Bench of the Madras High Court in 1878. "The Triplicane Six," in an attempt to

counter the dominant attitudes in the English language press started The Hindu on one British rupee and twelve annas of borrowed money. Aiyer was the editor and Veeraraghavachari ar the Managing Director. The first editorial declared, "[the] Press does not only give expression to public opinion, but also modifies and moulds it."

ONLINE PRESENCE

The Hindu was the first newspaper in India to have a website, launched in 1995. On 15 August 2009, the 130-year-old newspaper, launched the beta version of its redesigned website at beta.thehindu.com. This was the first redesign of its website since its launch. On June 24, 2010 the beta version of the website went fully live at www.hindu.com. The new website retains its core values of independence, authenticity, and credibility while adopting contemporary web design principles, tools, and features. The design is by Mario Garcia Jr., of Garcia Media, Tampa, Florida, USA. The workflow solution is by CCI Europe A/S, Denmark. The web publishing system is from Escenic A/S, Norway. The implementation was done inhouse.

Production process

The production system available in The Hindu :The quality and speed of

printing improved tremendously now.

Printing presses became very

sophisticated, and the level of automation increased. If two persons were needed earlier to load each page, instead now plates are loaded automatically on the web offset press. Technologies also emerged for high quality colour separation and four colour printing. The number of copies that can be printed on a web offset press has been gradually going up, and the latest presses are computer controlled and custom settings can automatically be made through computers. They can also be operated remotely. This has reduced the number of people needed to operate the presses. The high end technologies for printing became more complex, a new dimension to publishing was added by the p ersonal computer. The computer made it possible to publish material from the desktop. Thus, publication of a lot of new material became feasible. Now, one can publish small booklets or magazines without worrying about the costs and large scale circulation. Thus, one can publish something with small investments.

Operation department and they are copied to -sensitized aluminum plate because they are cheap and user friendly.
y The aluminum plate is exposed to yellow light to avoid the formation of

fog on the plates.


y Entire allocation of advertisements in a news pape r is done through

software.
y Three towers are used in the production process (T1, T2 and T3).

y T2 is used for printing Black and White pages (8 pages). y T3 is used for printing color pages (16 pages). y Quality check is done through the symbol + which is in left centered

corner in all the pages.


y If the + symbol is misplaced, the aluminum plate has to be changed. y The last page is considered as the front page which is printed at last. The

advertisement in the last page costs 75 lakh rupees. The last page is common all over India.
y Chiller is used to spray chill water in the uncolored space to avoid heat. y

THE HINDU is manufacturing ink for their own purpose.

y Data sheet (advertisement & collected information) is sent to the head

office every second. Time constrai nt is the major factor


y Page Number: 1,3,5,7 etc., are facing pages and 2,4,6,8 etc., are hidden

pages.

Other Details collected in industry are:

 Total Project is 250Crores.  They are handling offset printing.  Machine can print 24 pages at a time out of that 16 pages in colour.  The name of the machine they uses is SPIRIT DIAMOND.  The machine is imported from Japan and it costs around 150crores.  The machine is produced by MITSUBHISHI.  The minimum life period of machine is 20 years.  First newspaper company to use the heating process.  They are using primary colours Red ,blue, and green ,along with that they are also using CMY combination in some pages.  Nearly 60 employees working.

 Printing Starts at 3 pm.  Within 1 hour they can print 1,40,000 copies in Double Speed Mode.  Papers are imported from TNPL and HPC.  The quality of the paper is evaluated every month in Germany.  They are using 5 tons of paper everyday.  The height of the paper is 546 (area) and 1400(Width).  In the paper it contains 40% advertisement and 60% news.  5% wastage which are answerable to ABC(Audit Bureau of Circulation)  Data scheduling is collected and submitted to Chennai Officer.

CHANGE IN THE HINDU

The Hindu was the first in India to introduce fascimile transmission of pa ges, from Chennai to the other printing centres.

The latest computer-to-plate technology that speeds up the production process .

Conclusion:
The newspaper company has been working from the year 1878 and it is still working to bring news to the people. They have made many changes from there till now to increase the production. The daily sales of them is 1,466,304 copies daily. The company is run by the family of the founder kasturi & sons.
