People like water! During the first few
days of class, we gave out 1,000 bottles of
water to thirsty Longhorns. Students, used
to ignoring people trying to hand them
things, were surprised to see cold bottles of
water waiting for them. A special thanks to
Saul Godinez for organizing our volunteer
water distribution engineers! :-)
Spaghetti Dinner- The Spaghetti Dinner,
Friday, September 7th was the topper activity
for the 2007 Welcome Week. In a scientific
meatball count by Chef extraordinaire Patricia
Bauer-Slate, there were approximately 250
people enjoying the fun and fine cuisine Friday
night. We began with Josh Martin and the STRONG Musical
Bandaros leading the community in "Cowboy songs". Our
beloved Fr. Bob then led us in a blessing. After song and
prayer, came the food. Many thanks go to our cooks, the
students who helped and most especially Ricardo and Betty
Flores and Joe and Patricia Bauer-Slate. The best way to
thank Patricia is to patron her wonderful bakery, Sweetish
Hills Bakery on 1120 6th Street. The "Kazoo Battle" was
amazing and although the students won the prize, the trio of
Michael Burkhart, Tammy Russell and Nick Jackson will be
starting their recording career soon. It was a wonderful way
to begin the academic year. Thanks to the many hands who
helped, we couldn't have done it without you. We hope those
who came for the first time have found a home and those who
call the UCC home had a pleasant evening with their Church
Welcome Week was a great success! Much of the thanks for
the success needs to go to the coordinators of Welcome
Week, Saul Goodinez and Naema Kalifa. With all of the or-
ganizations at the UCC pitching in, new students were wel-
comed to the UCC with everything from a BBQ, to a game
night, to a movie, to dinner, to a ... you get the point. So many
students already think of the UCC as a "home away from
home" or the place they do everything except sleep and we
were excited to see new students experience first-hand the
community of the UCC.
Welcome Retreat - The STRONG
Retreat team hosted the Welcome
Retreat for over 60 Freshman and
Transfer students on Friday, Septem-
ber 7th and Saturday, September 8th.
This retreat coordinated by Amy Fujarski and Adam Henry
and the STRONG officers, incorporated representatives from
each of the student organizations to helps staff. Students at-
tending this retreat heard talks that addressed how to survive
as a student at UT and how to preserve you faith as a student.
It was our student leaders at their finest giving all new-comers
a UCC welcome. Thanks to STRONG and all who helped to
make this a great retreat!
