Golf Carts In The Community

At the Neighborhood Representatives Council Meeting on July 12, Board Secretary Todd Knape discussed the modifications and improvements made to golf cart routes and routing in Sun City Festival. Todd also developed a map outlining the routing. He discussed the Golf Cart signage plan which was developed in conjunction with the Town of Buckeye Engineer and recently installed in various locations throughout the community. The signage will help with golf cart routing in the community. For your reference, view the Sun City Festival Map of the Interim Golf Cart Route located on www.oursuncityfestival.net under the Community News section. Another tool available to help our residents gain knowledge in the proper operation of golf carts is an informative video developed by the Maricopa County Department of Transportation. To see the video, go to www.oursuncityfestival.net under the Community News section and view the Golf Carts On Streets video The video helps with questions regarding golf carts, lists several safety tips, and addresses allowable usage throughout the county.

RESIDENT PROFILE
They both retired, sold their house, and moved to Festival...

Juanita & Larry Lanie

After living in Racine, Wisconsin for 21 years, Larry and Juanita Lanie were both ready to escape the cold weather, snow, and high humidity of the midwest. Larrys business trips sent him to Phoenix every January and February for several years. Juanita joined him for a long weekend each year. She was very impressed that the sun always shined, the flowers were always in bloom, and you could eat outside in February without a winter coat! She convinced Larry that Phoenix was the only place to live. After visiting Phoenix in July 2005, they both decided that the summer heat would not be a problem for them. Since Sun City Grand was now sold out, they checked out Sun City Festival and fell in love. They both retired, sold their house, and moved to Festival in August 2007. Before retiring, Larry was the Northwest Marketing Manager for a farm equipment company, Case New Holland (CNH). He worked for 41 years before retiring. He currently enjoys working at the Fitness Check-In Desk at the Sage Center. He is a Neighborhood Block Watch Captain, Vice President of the RV Club, and Treasurer of the Mystery Riders Motorcycle Club. He enjoys the Hiking Club, the Digital Photo Club and recently joined the Field and Stream Club. Juanita began her teaching career instructing special education students, but retired after working 21 years as a kindergarten teacher. She currently enjoys working with little ones again at Festival Foothills, this time as an Assistant Teacher. She enjoys going to Paper Crafts & More Club and creating cards to give to her family and friends. Juanita also enjoys the Hiking Club, Mystery Riders Motorcycle Club, camping with the RV Club, and having fun with her friends. Juanita and Larry celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary in July and enjoy doing things together. They especially enjoy taking their motor home to Nascar races, as well as visiting their daughter, son-in-law, grandson, and granddaughter (due September 1) in Delaware. However, neither one of them miss the snow and do not want to move back to the cold weather again. They both love living in Festival and love showing it off to friends and family who come to visit.

What Should I Do First?

by Chuck Eier, M.S. C.S.C.S., Fitness & Wellness Director

A common question regarding exercise is, which exercise or what type of exercise to do first? Is the aerobic exercise supposed to be done before the strength training? Which muscles should be worked first when lifting weights? Does the order in which these exercises are done make any difference? The answer inevitably comes down to that depends. For general fitness and weight control, aerobic/cardiovascular exercise should be performed first followed by strength training. This guideline is important to follow in order to ensure proper warm-up prior to the hard effort of strength training. The increased blood flow to muscles from the aerobic activity minimizes the risk of muscle pulls and tears to provide better performance. If weight training is being performed on a day when aerobic exercise is not done, some type of warm-up exercise is still important. Five to ten minutes of activity can provide an adequate warm-up. Also, a critical item, is to include a full-body activity (nu-step machine or elliptical with arm exercise) to loosen and warm-up the muscles of the upper body. Another factor in determining the order in which exercise is performed is priority. If cardiovascular fitness is most important, (for performance or other reasons) emphasis should be on performing that exercise first when the body is not fatigued from other exercise. If strength and muscle gains are most important, weight training should be performed first (after adequate warm-up) when the body is fresh and not yet fatigued. When performing weight lifting exercises, the ideal order is to work large muscles first, then perform exercises to work the small muscles. The large muscles consist of those within the legs, chest and back. Smaller muscles are those of the shoulders and upper arms. This guideline is also dependent on priority. If the goal is to work specific muscles (not necessarily all of them) during a session, the focus would be on those particular ones. A way to create an additional challenge is to vary the order in which strength exercises are performed. On those occasions, working small muscles first would create a greater challenge for those exercises to be done later. The order in which exercises are completed has an impact on overall quality and safety of an exercise session. However, some of the decision on what should be done first lies within your goals and priorities.
