Wi-Fi freedom

Wi-Fi technology is available on all East Coast trains, so you can stay connected on the move. Whether you want to check out your destination, send some business emails, or see what your friends are up to do it all on the go! With our fast and reliable Wi-Fi service you can surf continuously while on the move. On-board Wi-Fi is free for First Class passengers. In Standard Class passengers get 15 minutes free usage and extra usage costs 4.95 per hour and 9.95 for 24 hours. This Wi-Fi technology is also available in our First Class Lounges. Using multiple mobile data connections and broadband satellite we offer a continuous service along the entire East Coast route. Our system automatically selects the best connection in the area, which means your session will remain uninterrupted throughout your journey provided the mobile network coverage is not disrupted. Where can I access Wi-Fi?


Connection for all Connection to Wi-Fi is available for all our passengers, both on board and in all our First Class Lounges. Once your laptop has established a connection and you have registered, you can get online straight away. What do I need? Most new laptops and PDAs are pre-configured and Wi-Fi enabled which means you can access a wireless network straight away. If you have an older model, it may be necessary to purchase a Wi-Fi card from an electronics retailer. Our Wi-Fi Support Team may be able to assist you but you should consult your retailer for further advice. Laptops Ideally laptops should be running Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows 98 or Windows 7. Apple devices need to be running operating system 9.0 or above and Linux users should have operating system 2.2 or above. Most enabled laptops will automatically detect the East Coast wireless network. PDAs For handheld PDA devices, Palm Operating System 4.0 or above, or Microsoft PocketPC 2002 and above, is required.

How do I get started?

Connection is easy simply turn on your laptop, connect to eastcoast-wifi and open your internet browser. If you encounter any problems, just call the Wi-Fi Support Team. Click on the Wi-Fi detector, usually indicated by this symbol on most computers, and go to Turn radio on, which will allow your computer to detect any Wi-Fi networks nearby. From the pop-up window that appears, click on eastcoast-wifi then the Connect button.

Next launch your internet browser and enter the following address: www.eastcoastwifi.train Most new laptops and PDAs are pre-configured and should detect the East Coast Wi-Fi service automatically. Once you are connected and can see the Welcome to East Coast on-board WiFi screen, follow the instructions on page 8.

If you cant connect to the Wi-Fi If your computer doesnt connect automatically please follow steps 13 below. The instructions are based on the Windows 7 system. Settings for other systems are similar. 1. To configure Microsoft Internet Explorer a. Open your browser and go to the Tools menu b. Select Internet Options and the tab Connections (figure 2a) c. Under LAN Settings open the window for Local

Area Network (LAN) settings d. Ensure the following options are set: Select Automatically detect settings (figure 2b) Deselect Use automatic configuration script Deselect Use a proxy server for your LAN e. Click OK , then click OK again

2. To confirm your SSID (Secure Set Identifier) settings A SSID is the name of the Wi-Fi Local Area Network (WLAN). a. Click on the Windows button b. Go to Control Panel c. Choose View network status and tasks d. Choose Manage wireless networks

e. Highlight eastcoast-wifi in the available networks window (figure 3). Go into Properties and then the Security tab. Ensure that the security type is set to open and the Encryption type is set to none, as this is a public service

These instructions offer a step-by-step guide through the connection process for passengers travelling in Standard Class. First Class passengers only need to follow step 1, as Wi-Fi is complimentary. 1. If you have already registered for on-board Wi-Fi then you can log in with your email address. If you are a new user, you will need to fill out a quick registration form. Follow the click here link on the page to do so. 2. Everyone is entitled to 15 minutes free Wi-Fi per journey. Once youre successfully logged in, you can either use your free 15 minutes or top up your balance for a longer internet connection. Alternatively, to get Wi-Fi youve already paid for, enter the passcode that was emailed to you when you made your purchase. If you enter your passcode right-click on your Wireless Network Connection, then choose Properties from the menu

f. Scroll down and highlight Internet Protocol TCP/ IP option and click on Properties (figure 4a) g. Select Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically and click OK to confirm (figure 4b) (Make a note of the original IP and DNS settings as these will be lost when the setting is changed and will need to be changed back for your home/ office network) h. After you have been through the configuration settings above and made any changes, you may need to reboot your laptop.

or click to use your free time youll be directed straight to the connected page. Remember once you click to use your free 15 minutes your Wi-Fi service will run continuously and cannot be paused. 3. To top up your Wi-Fi account, select which top-up option you want. If youre entitled to 15 free minutes they will be added to your purchase automatically. Top up with 24 hours of Wi-Fi and you can use the internet on multiple journeys within the 24 hours. Your internet time will run continuously it cannot be paused or carried over. 4. You will be redirected to a secure payment page to make your purchase. Youll need your credit/ debit card details to complete the transaction. 5. Your top-up is now complete. The passcode on the screen is your proof of purchase so make sure you have a copy of it. It will also be emailed to you. Save your passcode for future reference if you dont want to browse straight away. Remember once you click on Get started your Wi-Fi connection will run continuously and cannot be paused. 6. Once youve selected Get started your Wi-Fi connection will begin and youll be taken to a connected page. Keep this page open as it has a handy countdown to let you know how much internet time you have left. Click the Start surfing button to open a new window. 7. When your Wi-Fi service expires you will be given the opportunity to top up for more internet time.

FAQs
Q: How does the service work? A: The connection to the train is provided through a combination of

multiple 3G/HSDPA mobile networks. These external links are combined to deliver a constant internet connection even when going through a tunnel. Q: What speeds will I get from the service? A: Due to the nature of the mobile connections the speed will fluctuate depending on your geographic location and the number of users on the service. However, you should always enjoy a faster service than using a PC mobile data card. Q: How secure is the network? A: All practical safeguards have been implemented on the train. Although the network is an open network it should not be possible for other users to gain unauthorised access to your computer. Always ensure that you are connected to the right network. We also recommend that you have up-to-date firewall and anti-virus software. Q: Which network do I connect to? A: You should connect to eastcoast-wifi. Q: Why is there a charge in Standard Class now? A: We have invested to improve our Wi-Fi service and have increased its speed and reliability. The service remains free in First Class and Standard Class passengers get 15 minutes free usage - extra usage costs 4.95 per hour and 9.95 for 24 hours. Q: Do I get a free 15 minutes every journey? A: Yes, you will get a new free 15 minutes on every journey so even if you take multiple journeys in one day you will receive a new free allocation on each train. Q: If I purchase a 24-hour top-up does it run out in 24 hours or is it for 24 hours worth of use (Can I stop/start it)? A: A 24-hour top-up will start from the moment you click Start surfing, and will run continuously until 24 hours later. You will be able to use it on multiple journeys within the 24-hour period, by logging into the Wi-Fi system and entering your passcode. Q: What happens if I change trains and still have time left on my top-up? A: Once you click Start surfing your Wi-Fi service will run continuously and cannot be paused. You will be able to continue using the Wi-Fi on another train as long as it is still within the time left on your top-up. You will simply need to log into the Wi-Fi system and enter your passcode again. Q: Can I transfer my Wi-Fi credit onto a different computer? A: Yes, you will just need to enter your passcode on the other computer to launch it there. Q: Can I top up by cheque or cash or will you accept credit/debit card payments only? A: We accept credit/debit card payments only.

Q: What happens if I lose connection during my session? Will I be able to resume? A: Yes you will be able to resume your session. Just go back to the portal www.eastcoastwifi.train and enter your passcode again. Q: What happens if I lose connection during the payment process? A: If you lose connection after making a payment and you have received your passcode, you will be able to use your passcode to get started. If you lose connection after payment but before receiving your passcode you will need to check if you have received the email with your passcode, and if not, contact the Wi-Fi Support team on 08451 25 44 55 or wifi@eastcoast.co.uk Q: How long will I have to redeem a passcode I have purchased? A: Your passcode will be valid for 28 days from the day you purchase it. Q: Your landing page does not appear automatically when I open my web browser. What do I do? A: Enter www.eastcoastwifi.train into your address bar. Q: I cant seem to send emails from the train. A: Try changing your SMTP server in your mail software to smtp.iss.icomera.com Q: I cant seem to get access to my computers settings to configure it to use the East Coast Wi-Fi service. Why is this? A: Your Wi-Fi settings have probably been locked down by your companys IT department. Please consult with your IT manager to change these.
