Advances in Formation Evaluation Techniques; & Operational Issues in well drilling.

Company: ONGC

Course Description
This course combines open-hole data acquisition and interpretations, cased-hole data acquisitions and interpretations and directional drilling. This in response to ONGCs request for orientation program for acreage and exploration managers. This course will start with an overview of reservoir fluids and rock properties. This is an important introduction to the three disciplines. The various open-hole tools are discussed outlining the physics of measurements, tools configurations and borehole and other environmental corrections. The interpretation equations used for each measurement will also be presented in details. The integration of the various data into a comprehensive solution will also be outlined. New technologies, namely nuclear magnetic resonance, will also be presented. A workshop on open hole interpretations will be made at the end of this session. Similarly, the cased-hole tool physics and principles of measurements will be presented in details. Production log interpretations in single phase flow, two-phase flow and threephase flow will also be presented in details. This will be done in workshop environment using log examples. Water saturation behind the casing using pulse neutron logs (PNL) and Carbon/Oxygen measurements will also be presented. Cased-hole leak detections, inside the casing and behind the casing will be reviewed in details. This is an important subject- as statistics shows that over 30% of wells in the Middle East area suffer from some form of poor well integrity. Finally, new technologies, namely Cased Hole Formation Resistivities, will be presented. Directional drilling will also be addressed in some details. The emphasis will be on measurement while drilling (MWD) and logging while drilling (LWD). These are essential inputs to real-time well placement. Modern technology tools for Measurements While Drilling (MWD) and Logging While Drilling (LWD) will be presented. These are essential technologies for well placements and safe drilling.

The main objective is to introduce an integrated course in open hole, cased hole logging and deviated well drilling that will benefit the acreage and exploration managers who are scheduled to attend. Three 2-hour workshops will be dedicated to each of these topics to expose the participants to real well data. The course will aim at providing the following: A basic understanding of the fundamentals of reservoirs

and reservoir rocks. Exposure to new technologies in Open hole, cased hole and

directional drilling A working knowledge of using interpreting open-hole and

cased-hole logs.

Audience
This course is designed specifically to meet the requirements of ONGC acreage and exploration managers. A strong background in cased-hole and openhole logging and log interpretations is not a prerequisite to attend such a course. Moreover, a detailed knowledge of MWD and LWD are also not prerequisites.

Topics to be Covered
1- Reservoir Fluids. 2- Rock properties and sedimentary basins 3- Depth control and depth correlation 4- Principles of measurements and the physics of Open-hole logging tools. 5- Log Interpretations: clean and shaly formations- Open-hole workshop. 6- Principles of measurements and the physics of cased-hole tools.
