Melbourne Shadows for the MHS proposal:

The above Shadow numbers represent the (approximate) Shadow percentage of the proposed Building (rectangular shape being a height of 25 storeys, and the rounded rectangle representing the land of MHS.

In the view of the Property Owners Association, the Shadow numbers represents the direct % of monetary loss in $ terms, of the loss in value of the neighbouring school property, without adding in losses due to loss of school ethos, wind effects, psychological and visual harm. These latter ones involve ongoing loss of confidence for the students and teachers and would far exceed the initial monetary loss. In other words, the loss in value for this school far exceeds the direct monetary loss due to loss of sunlight and solar energy. It is unacceptable for a SEF to exceed 10 for a school with ovals, solar heating and swimming pools. As can be seen above, the shadows at above SEF 30, grossly interfere with the school. Specifically. 1. Solar Energy: The energy form the Melbourne summer sun is a surprising 1 kw/sq metre, from approximately 11 am to 3 pm. (allowance for daylight saving hours change). In other words for novices to electrical engineering, the solar energy is approximately the same as a standard heater blowing on your body from a metre, using 1 kw of electrical power. This energy is lost if a shadow falls on you. The main loss of immediate money from most easily harvested solar energy would be on the 4 storey Swimmingpool and Gymnasium etc owned by MHS immediately south of the proposed Building. It would lose all its solar energy a massive monetary loss from direct solar heating of water.

1a. Solar Energy loss from 25 storey building: The Main MHS Building would lose over 40% of its solar energy from a 25 str bldg, and particularly the morning heating and light rays on the east face of the MHS building wall (stack effect heating) and all the light to 60% of classrooms (most have only east windows) in the morning. A massive loss of money in extra lighting, health risks of damage to eyes etc. The shadows from a 25 storey building, would shade the majority of the school oval before 9 am in winter.

1b. Solar Energy loss from 8 storey building: The angle mean being 60 degrees indicates that an 8 storey building adjacent would still completely shade the roof of the 4 storey Swimmingpool and Gymnasium at all effective productive heating times during the year. The SEF shows that 25% of solar energy would be lost to the Main MHS Building due to an adjacent 8 storey building. The shadows from an 8 storey building, would still shade the school oval before 8 am in winter.
