Measuring the Emotional Competencies (EMOGRAM) (Personally developed by Dr.

Haridas)
Emotional Competencies can be measured using various Psychometric tools to create an EMOGRAM of the person. Various psycho sensitive yet non apparent questions are asked to validate the behavior, which can be interpreted properly only by an experienced professional. Many sources are utilized to develop the test. Some are well tested and others not so. It is extremely important that the person answers the question in absolute honesty, like in any psychometric tests. (Actually this is the most vital problem in validating any psychometric tests). Then equating the result to a particular job requirement is important. There is no uniformity in the emotional competency levels needed for various jobs. For example some jobs comparatively may require a very high level of Empathy or some others may require higher level of Motivation or Self awareness or Self control. So the EMOGRAM developed cannot be judged as good or bad in general. We can say only that a particular EMOGRAM is suitable or unsuitable for a particular job. (Except in the extreme cases, where clinical and psychological intervention is needed. A base level of all the competencies is needed for everybody for normal living).

Competencies and their sub factors tested for EMOGRAM:

Competencies SELF AWARENESS SELF REGULATION MOTIVATION EMPATHY Sub factors Awareness of ones own emotions. Capacity for self assessment. Self Confidence. Adaptability. Self control. Trustworthiness. Conscientiousness. Optimism. Capacity to innovate. Drive to achieve. General initiative. Commitment. Understanding & Developing others. Service orientation. Socio-political awareness.

SOCIAL SKILLS

Communicating & influencing others. Leadership. Conflict resolution. Catalyzing changes. Team Building. Having a shared vision

An EMOGRAM can be charted as per the following:

BASIC NEEDED NEGATIVELY OVER POSITIVELY EXTRA

0 - 4 = BASIC NEEDED: Range needed for normal survival. 0-4+4-7 offering success 0-9+4-7+7-9 = BASIC+POSITIVELY EXTRA+ NEGATIVELY OVER: Range not advisable as the extra over of any competency occurs at the cost of other competencies. = BASIC + POSITIVELY EXTRA: Range of higher competency Positive benefit leading to personal and professional

For example if a person is over empathetic far beyond the job requirement it may effect his Self Regulation or Self awareness or Social skills. Or if he is far less empathetic it may negatively affect his Social Skills or Self control.

Two Case Studies

Case Study. 1 Name: Harish Krishnan (changed for privacy) Education: B Tech. MCA. Sex/Marital status: Male/Single Age: 24 years Job: Systems Manager in an MNC Family as a child: Nuclear. Only Child. Upper middle class. Scholastics as a child: Very High Behavioral Assessments:

Getting difficult to adjust in a group. Seemingly depressed generally. Poor interaction with others. Highly stressed up. Takes / gives less feed back. Suspicious. Poor control on sub ordinates.

Anger level high. Low team sense. Physically well kept. Eats balanced diet. Health conscious Reluctant to seek personal help from others, except on high compulsions. A number of somatic issues like Migraine head ache, hyperacidity and Irritable bowl syndrome. Highly hypo chondriac.

EMOGRAM is found as follows:

EMOGRAM Diagnosis: The differential increment of Self Regulation and corresponding self awareness contributed for the lower grading of Empathy

and hence Social Skills. Its a chain reaction. One affects the other. Due to this Motivation remain stunted. On a personal discussion we found that this person had a reasonably lonely childhood, was very studious and academically sound. Parental controls were very tight. Interfering in others issue was considered as improper in the house as well as at school. According to his parents and many teachers he was a good boy-he told us.

Improvements suggested: Improving social skills like communicating with others more often, building personal bonds with others, improved cooperative and collaborative attitude. He should involve more in conflict or change related situations even as a silent participator. There is a strong prescription for involving in team games like football. Volley ball, where there will not be any chances for building internal empires. Never to be a silent observer with a detached feeling. At Empathy level try to guide and develop others. Get seriously involved in group charity activities on a regular basis. Try to make even simple commitments on behalf of others. Joining some social groups or clubs outside the working schedules is strongly recommended. Try to accept diversified and strange persons for interaction. This will curtail the over scores in Self Regulation and Self Awareness. Case study. 2. Name : Anitha (Changed for privacy) Age: 37 Sex: Female Marital status: Married Children: Two daughters

Education: M Sc. B Ed. Job: Teaching Family as a child: Joint, Siblings: four, Lower Middle class. Scholastics as a child: Just average.

Behavioral Assessments: Balanced behavior. Sociable. Good Team spirit. Helps others. Seeks personal help from others. Takes responsibility. Takes/gives feedback. Reasonable stress levels. Physically not very well kept. Dress sense: Not very good.

EGOGRAM IS FOUND AS FOLOWS:

EMOGRAM DIAGNOSIS: This is a reasonably comfortable Emogram. Should do very well as a teacher. Social Skills and Empathy are at optimum at the professional level of a Teacher. Little control is needed in those areas not to increase. Further growth in Empathy may affect Motivation or/ and Self Regulations. POSSIBLE PROBLEM AREAS: Chances for over involvement and over sentimental. Will develop time constraints and this may lead to added stress levels. To take care on the Self Regulation areas, as it may slip down and disparity will develop in Self Awareness and Self Regulation. When there is a large difference between Self Awareness and Self Regulation, depression may set in. SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT: Frequent lonely introspection needed for remaining in this reasonably healthy EMOGRAM. Introspect on self and the relationship to others. Cross check the genuineness before helping others.
