1. At a point is an elastic material, the resultant stress on a certain plane is 60MPa


(tensile) inclined at 300 to the normal to that plane. On a plane at right angles to
this plane, there is a normal tensile stress of 42MPa. Find the principal stresses
and locate the principal planes. Find also the max shear stress and the planes on
which it acts. [16]
2. (a) Explain Haigh’s max. strain energy theory originally put forward by Beltrami.
(b) Obtain the yield criterion and design criterion in the case of 3-D and 2-D stress
systems. [8+8]
3. A solid shaft, 80mm in dia. transmits 120 H.P. running at 180 R.P.M. Calculate
the max. intensity of shear stress induced and the angle of twist for a length of 6m.
Take N = 8X104 N/mm2 . [16]
4. Derive the deflection formula for an open coiled helical spring subjected to an axial
load. [16]
5. An R.S.Tee-section, 150mm wide × 75mm deep, thickness of flange 9mm, thickness
of web 8.4mm, is used as a strut, 3 metre 4 long, ends hinged.Calculate the safe
axial load by Rankine?s formula, using a factor of safety of 3. Rankines constants,
f c = 315N/mm2 ; a = 1/ 7500. [16]
6. A cylindrical steel chimney 40m high, 2m external dia, thickness of metal 0.15m at
base, is exposed to a horizontal wind pressure, whose intensity varies as the square
root of the height above the ground. At a height of 16m above ground the intensity
of wind-pressure on a flat surface is 2.4kN/m2 . The self-weight of the chimney is
30kN. If the coefficient wind pressure is 0.6, calculate the stresses at the base and
sketch the variation. [16]
7. A thick cylinder having internal radius 200mm and external radius 300mm is sub-
jected to 4N/mm2 . Find the internal pressure that can be applied if the max.
permissible stress is 15N/mm2 . Find also the change in thickness of the cylinder.
Take E = 200GN/m2 and m1 = 0.3. [16]
8. An angle section 200 × 200 × 20mm is used as a simply-supported beam of 3m span
with one of its legs horizontal. It carries two point loads of 25KN each at third
pointS. The load line is vertical passing through the c.g. of the section. Find the
bending stresses at the 3 extreme corner of the section. [16]

1. A tie bar of cross - sectional area 1000mm2 is subjected to an axial tensile load of
70 kN. Find the normal, tangential and resultant stresses on a plane the normal to
which makes an angle of 300 with the axis of the bar. Find also the max. values of
these stresses and the planes on which they act. [16]

2. Using:

(a) max. shear strain energy theory and


(b) max. strain theory find the magnitude of minor principal stress in a steel
member,

if at a point the major principal stress is 20N/mm2 (tensile) and the minor
principal stress is compressive. Take Poisson’s ratio = 1/3. [4+12]

3. A solid steel shaft is subjected to a twisting moment of 8 kN-m and a B.M. of 5


KN-m estimate the dia of the bolt according to:

(a) Max. principal stress theory


(b) Max. shear stress theory.

Take the elastic limit as 270N/mm2 , factor of safety = 3 and m
= 0.25.

4. A close coiled helical spring is made of 10mm dia. wire coiled to a mean dia. of
120mm the number of turns being 10. It is fixed at one end and a twist of 15 N m
is applied at the other end. Taking E = 200GN/m2 , find:

(a) the max. bending stress induced


(b) angle of twist of spring and
(c) number of turns after application of torque. [6+6+4]

5. A 350 mm × 165 mm R.S.joist is used as a strut, 6 metres long, one end fixed, the
other hinged. Calculate the crippling load by Rankine?s formula. Compare this
with the load obtained by the Euler formula, taking E = 2 × 105 N/mm2 . For what
length of this strut will the two formulae give the same crippling load? For the
joist, area of section = 630mm2 Ixx = 13158.3 ×104 mm4 ; Iyy = 631.9 × 104 mm4 .
Take f c = 315N/mm2 . [16]

6. A horizontal strut 3m long is of-hollow circular section 16cm external dia. And
internal dia. 14cm. It carries an end thrust of 300kN along with a u.d.l of 5kN/m.
Assuming the ends as hinged and taking the self weight also into account, calculate
the max. stress induced in the section (Density = 78.5kN/m3 ). [16]

7. Compare the values of max. and minimum hoop stresses for a cast steel cylindrical
shell of 600 mm external dia. And 400 mm internal dia. Subjected to a pressure
of 30N/mm2 applied:

(a) Internally and


(b) Externally. [8+8]

1. At a point is an elastic material there are normal stresses of 35MPa (tensile) and
25MPa (compressive) on two mutually perpendicular planes, accompanied by shear-
ing stresses of 10MPa on the same planes. The loading on the material is increased
so that the stresses reach values of K times those given. If the max. direct stress is
not to exceed 80MPa and the max shear stress is not to exceed 50 MPa, find the
max value of K. [16]

2. Calculate the dia of a steel rod according to max. shear stress theory if it has to
with stand an axial pull of 10 kN and a transverse shear of 6 kN. The elastic limit
in tension is 240 MPa and the factor of safety 3. [16]

3. Calculate equivalent B.M. and equivalent T.M. in the case of a shaft 80mm dia.
subjected to a B.M. of 10 kN-m and a twisting moment of 15 kN-m. Find also
the max. values of the direct and shear stresses induced and specify the planes on
which they act. [16]

4. A safety valve 80mm dia. is to blow off at a pressure of 1.2N/mm2 . It is held by


a close coiled helical compression spring having mean dia. of 15 cm. The initial
compression of the spring is 25mm. Find the dia. of the rod and the number of
turns necessary if the allowable shear stress is 160N/mm2 . N = 8 × 104 N/mm2 .

8. An unequal angle 60×40×6mm is placed with the longer leg vertical and is used as
a beam. It is subjected to a B.M. of 10KN-M acting in the vertical plane through
the c.g. of the section. Locate the neutral axis of the section. Determine the max.
Bending stress induced in the section. Verify the value by an alternate Solution.

3. A hollow shaft is subjected to a torque of 80 kN-m and a B.M. of 60 kN-m at a


certain section. The external dia. of the shaft is twice the internal dia. If the max.
shear stress is limited to 75N/mm2 , find the dimension of the shaft. [16]

4. A laminated carriage spring 800mm long is made of 10 leaves each of width 5mm.
Find the thickness if the bending stress is limited to 250N/mm2 . and the spring is
loaded with 5000N. To what radius should the leaves be initially bent for the spring
to be flat under this load?. What will be to initial deflection? Take E = 200GN/m2 .

6. A cylindrical chimney shaft of a hollow circular section, 2.50 metres external di-
ameter, 1 metre internal diameter, is 30 metres high. If the horizontal intensity
of wind pressure varies as X 2/3 where X is the vertical height above the ground,
calculate the overturning moment at the base due to the force of wind pressure,
taking the coefficient of wind-resistance as 0.6. Given that the horizontal intensity
of wind pressure at a height of 20 metres is 1KN/m2 . If the weight of masonry is
22.5KN/m3 , calculate the extreme intensities of stress at the base. [16]

8. A timber joist, 100 mm wide and 200 mm deep, is freely supported over a span of 4
meters. It is subjected to a bending moment of 30,000 cm kg at the central section,

the trace OY’ of the plane of loading being inclined at 300 to the principal axis
OY. Locate the neutral axis and calculate the maximum bending stress induced.
If the bending moment is due to a total load of 600 kg uniformly distributed over
the whole span calculate the deflection. Take E = 105 kg/cm2 . [16]
