SENIOR NEWS LINE by Matilda Charles Brain Exercises Theres more to being connected to the Internet than checking email and reading out-of-state newspapers. With the right software, we can exercise our brains. CogniFit Personal Coach is an online program geared to helping seniors improve memory, stay alert, multi-task and think faster. Theres nothing to download to your computer. The whole program is online, and you only need to sign up and log in. After an initial assessment, it keeps track of your progress as you go step-by-step through more then 100 different levels. Among the many areas it covers are auditory short-term memory, spatial perception, visual scanning, eye-hand coordination and response time. Getting benefits from the program only takes one hour a week, broken into three 20-minute sessions. If you dont have a computer, your program can be done on a friends computer or even at the library, since your sign-on information is secure. CogniFit won the 2009 International Council on Active Aging award for creative products aimed at seniors. The program costs $14.95 per month. Log on and see how it works at www.cognifit.com. If in doubt about the value of the training, click the Scientific Validation tab and look through the studies. If youre uncertain about computer use, those who use computer for any amount of time are 44 percent less likely to have mild cognitive impairment. Add in exercise, and you can delay (or even prevent) mental decline. Prefer to work with pencil and paper? Pick up a Graduate Record Exam (GRE) study guide at the bookstore. Each general test book has practice questions on a variety of topics such as math, vocabulary, reading comprehension. Talk about brain stretchers! (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

THIS IS A HAMMER By Samantha Mazzotta Electrical Safety Q: What is a GFCI? A contractor we're considering to renovate our kitchen and bathroom keeps mentioning them. -- Gayle S., Wheeling, W.Va. A: The letters GFCI stand for "Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter," a safety feature found in power receptacles (outlets). GFCI receptacles are required in bathrooms and kitchens by law. GFCI receptacles detect when electricity is "leaking" and immediately interrupt the electrical circuit (e.g., shut off the power). This is an extremely important safety feature when operating electrical appliances like hairdryers or toasters near water. Even a tiny amount of excess electrical current will trip the circuit. The receptacles are reset by pressing a button, usually set between the two outlets. *** Q: How can I know for sure that a circuit has been turned off to a room or larger area? -- Jay S., via email A: Plug a lamp or a radio into an outlet in the room, or turn the overhead light or fan on. Have a helper stay in the area and tell you when the light or radio turns off. If you aren't sure or are unable to check for power for any reason, turn off power to the entire home by flipping the main switch or circuit breaker. If you're unsure the power is completely off (for example, power supplied from a source outside the home) or not confident you can make the repair, contact a licensed electrician. HOME TIP: Veteran electricians know to never grab a wire -- touch it with the back of your hand first. If electrical shock occurs, your fist could close involuntarily, increasing injury if it closes around the wire. Send your questions or comments to ask@thisisahammer.com, or write This Is a Hammer, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. When in doubt as to whether you can safely or effectively complete a project, consult a professional contractor. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

WAREHOUSE PRICING
WE DID THE HOMEWORK FOR YOU, AND CANT WAIT TO SEE YOU HERE AT PAUL BROWNS!
Quite simply, warehouse pricing saves you time and money. Today many dealers are in the habit of cleaning up vehicles for their used car lots and simply marking them up 4 to 5 thousand dollars and hoping an uninformed customer walks in and takes the bait. Not at Paul Browns! With the power of the internet, todays car shoppers are smarter than ever. With a few clicks, buyers can find plenty of vehicles to choose from and quickly realize whats a good deal and whats not. We save you the time. Before a vehicle hits our lot, we scan the market within a 300 mile radius to survey how each dealer has priced similar vehicles. Over 25,000 websites are surveyed as well as local newspapers and classifieds. With that information in hand we carefully price our vehicle to be within the top ten percent of the market for similar vehicles. Regardless of profit or loss, thats where they are priced. Why? To save you time, and help us be assured that we are providing a good car at a good value. We are not guessing at it like other dealers, we can show you what a great deal you are getting. On every vehicle on our lot you will find a copy of the nationally recognized Kelly Blue Book retail value. Below that you will find our Paul Brown Warehouse Price (usually thousands under Kelly Blue Book). Our vehicles are re-priced weekly so keep checking back with us, sometimes the deals get even sweeter. Dont wait long though, with warehouse pricing, over 90 percent of our inventory is sold within 30 days.

Port Allegany, PA. [July 13, 2011] The Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture (PASA) has received a grant from the Colcom Foundation to develop action-oriented tools and trainings throughout western Pennsylvania to help farmers, rural land owners, and other citizens make informed, integrated decisions, understand legal issues, and engage in environmental monitoring and local organizing efforts related to Marcellus Shale Gas issues within their communities. The third workshop in the series, Understanding Legal Issues Related to Marcellus Shale Gas Workshop will be offered in McKean County on Tuesday, August 30th from 6:00pm-8:30pm at Seneca Highlands Career & Technical Center 219 Edison Bates Drive, Port Allegany 16743. Farmers and rural landowners are a key group impacted by the Marcellus Shale gas development, and we want to bring their voices into the debate and support them as they continue to steward their land in the complicated environment of Marcellus Shale gas play, says PASA Member Services Manager Leah Smith. You must keep in mind and be aware that sobriety is a day by day effort and one must not dwell on the past nor get too far ahead of themselves and worry about the future neither. One should focus on one day at a time and sometimes individuals have to force themselves to take one minute or one hour at a time, just to remain on track and keep their heads above water. The important thing to remember is that anything that may distract or burden you will eventually pass and as long as you keep your sobriety your number one priority at all times just for one day at a time you will be just fine. If you or someone you know is struggling with a drug or alcohol addiction, contact Narconon Arrowhead today at 800468-6933 or log onto www.stopaddiction.com fb

"Fortunately, it stayed green. I was more worried about a yellow coming out with five to go. 'Do we have enough fuel for a greenwhite-checkered (finish)? Usually those things that come and squash us didn't happen today. Maybe a change of luck for us from that standpoint." Newman, like Stewart, is a native of Indiana. The 33-year-old South Bend native graduated from Purdue University in 2001 with a degree in vehicle structure engineering. STRANGE BUT TRUE: By Samantha Weaver You probably know that Bill Gates lives in a palatial house near Seattle, but you might not realize quite how big it is. The sprawling home is a whopping 66,000 square feet; the property taxes alone are approximately $1 million per year. It's not unusual to have heated floors, but the Gates' estate has heated driveways. Beats shoveling snow, I suppose. Need another reason to buy food that's grown locally? It was a great day for Stewart-Haas Racing driver Ryan Newman in New Hampshire. Newman won the July 17 race from the pole, edging team owner and fellow Indiana native Tony Stewart. (John Clark/NASCAR This Week photo) Newman Relishes Rare Double LOUDON, N.H. -- When Ryan Newman crossed the finish line at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, having won for the 15th time in his Sprint Cup career, he enjoyed a pleasing, but rare, overlap. Newman also started on the pole in the Lenox Industrial Tools 301. It was the 47th pole of Newman's career. Only nine drivers have ever won more. But it was only the fourth time Newman won after starting out front. "We backed up what everybody said we couldn't back up," he said. "That was our qualifying effort on Friday. I had won three for 46, now four for 47. "We'll relish this moment and figure out what we did right so we can keep doing it." Eight of Newman's 15 career victories occurred in 2003, when he drove for Roger Penske. He was selected as Cup's 2002 Rookie of the Year over Jimmie Johnson, who has since won five championships. Newman's owner and teammate, Tony Stewart, finished second, marking the first time teammates both started and finished 1-2, in the same order, since 1957. As the laps wound down, Newman had track position but was low on fuel. He managed to save enough fuel to maintain the lead and hold off Stewart's charge. "One of the best cars here is the '14' (Stewart). There were a couple other cars at different times, but the '14' was mired back in traffic," said Newman. "He had to run the wheels off of it to get up to

NOW HERE'S A TIP: By JoAnn Derson "To help our children learn the placement of states, we glued a map to a piece of cardboard, then used a razor knife to cut each state out along its lines. This created a puzzle. It made learning the states fun. We wrote the capitals on the backs, so we learned those, too." -- M.A. in Georgia Keep extra magazines in the car to read when you have to wait or while sitting in line at the bank or a fast-food drive through. "I love self-sticking notes to stay organized. I use them on my bathroom vanity mirror so that I can preplan my day in my head while getting ready in the morning." -- E.T. in Georgia "I purchased extra-large safety pins and used scraps of fabric to designate towels for family members. I wrote each of our names in washable ink on several 'tags,' which are then attached to our bathing towel. I can tell in an instant who has left his or her towel on the floor/ bed/etc. And I am washing a lot less towels now." -- D.L. in Ohio "I had a few old mouse pads that were lying around. I used embroidery floss to stitch a few together and I use them as a kneepad in the garden. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

Picnic Potato Salad Potato salad is always a hit at a casual barbecue, and this simple recipe of red-skinned potatoes with a tangy mayonnaise dressing is a winner! Our secret? First toss the warm potatoes with a vinaigrette so they can absorb lots of flavor, then stir with the creamy dressing to coat. 3 pounds (about 12) medium red-skin potatoes, cut into 1-inch chunks 1/4 cup distilled white vinegar 1 tablespoon olive oil 2 teaspoons spicy brown mustard 1 1/4 teaspoons salt 1/4 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper 1/2 cup mayonnaise 1/3 cup whole milk 2 small celery stalks, thinly sliced 2 green onions, minced 1. In 5- to 6-quart saucepot, place potatoes and enough water to cover; heat to boiling over high heat. Reduce heat to low; cover and simmer 8 to 10 minutes or until potatoes are fork-tender. 2. Meanwhile, in large bowl, with wire whisk, mix vinegar, oil, mustard, salt and pepper. 3. Drain potatoes. Add hot potatoes to bowl with vinaigrette; gently stir with rubber spatula until evenly coated and vinaigrette is
absorbed. Cool 15 minutes. 4. In small bowl, with wire whisk, mix mayonnaise and milk until smooth. Add mayonnaise mixture, celery and green onions to potatoes. Gently stir with rubber spatula until mixed. Serve warm or cover and refrigerate up to 1 day. Yields 12 (2/3 cup) servings. MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On Aug. 14, 1751, Francis Blandy falls into a coma and dies in his home outside London, a victim of arsenic poisoning at the hand of his daughter, Mary, who wanted his fortune and the freedom to be with her married lover. Mary was hanged from the gallows after being found guilty of murder. On Aug. 10, 1776, news reaches London that the Americans had drafted the Declaration of Independence. Until the Declaration of Independence formally transformed the 13 British colonies into states, the conflict centered in Massachusetts was seen as a local uprising. On Aug. 13, 1899, Alfred Hitchcock is born in London. His innovative mastery of suspense made him one of the most popular and influential filmmakers of the 20th century. In 1925, he directed his first film, "The Pleasure Garden," a silent picture. On Aug. 11, 1934, a group of federal prisoners classified as "most dangerous" arrives at Alcatraz Island, a 22-acre rocky outcrop located 1 1/2 miles offshore in San Francisco Bay. Alcatraz was designed to hold prisoners with a penchant for escape attempts. Al Capone and George "Machine Gun" Kelly were among those housed on "the Rock." On Aug. 12, 1961, East Germany begins building the Berlin Wall to divide East and West Berlin. The completed concrete block wall included sentry towers and minefields. During the lifetime of the wall, nearly 80 people were killed trying to escape from East to West Berlin. On Aug. 9, 1974, Vice President Gerald Ford is sworn in as the 38th president of the United States after the resignation of Richard Nixon. After taking the oath of office, President Ford spoke to the nation in a television address, declaring, "My fellow Americans, our long national nightmare is over." On Aug. 8, 1988, the Chicago Cubs host the first night game in the history of Wrigley Field. Because of lack of lighting, for 74 seasons, the Cubs had played only day games at home. Today the Cubs are the only major-league team that still plays the majority of its home games during the day. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.
