1. Find the reactions Ra and Rb induced at the supports A and B of the right angle
bar ACB supported as shown in Figure 1 and subjected to a vertical load P applied
at the mid-point of AC. [16]

2. (a) A 108 N block is held on a 400 incline by a bar attached to a 150 N block on
a horizontal plane Figure 2a. The bar which is fastened by smooth pins at
each end, is inclined 200 to the horizontal. The co-efficient of friction between
each block and its plane is 0.325. For what horizontal force P, applied to 150
N block will motion to the right be impending?

(b) A block weighing 100 N is resting on a rough plane inclined 200 to the hor-
izontal. It is acted upon by a force of 50N directed upward at angle of 140
above the plane. Determine the friction. If the block is about to move up the
plane, determine the co-efficient of friction. [10+6]

3. (a) Deduce an expression for centrifugal tension of belt drive.

(b) The maximum allowed tension in a belt is 1500 N. The angle of lap is 1700
and coefficient of friction between the belt and material of the pulley is 0.27.
Neglecting the effect of centrifugal tension, calculate the net driving tension
and power transmitted if the belt speed is 2 m/s. [6+10]
4. For the Figure4. Find the moment of inertia about horizontal centroidal axis and
also find the radius of gyration about the same axis. [16]

6. (a) A train is traveling at a speed of 60 km/hr. It has to slow down due to certain
repair work on the track. Hence, it moves with a constant retardation of 1
km/hr/second until its speed is reduced to 15 km/hr. It then travels at a
constant speed of for 0.25 km/hr and accelerates at 0.5 km/hr per second
until its speed once more reaches 60 km/hr. Find the delay caused.
(b) The motion of a particle in rectilinear motion is defined by the relation
s = 2t3 − 9t2 + 12t − 10 where s is expressed in metres and t in seconds. Find
i. the acceleration of the particle when the velocity is zero
ii. the position and the total distance traveled when the acceleration is zero.

7. (a) A homogeneous sphere of radius of a=100 mm and weight W=100 N can
rotate freely about a diameter. If it starts from rest and gains, with constant
angular acceleration, an angular speed n=180rpm, in 12 revolutions, find the
acting moment. .
(b) A block starts from rest from‘A’. If the coefficient of friction between all sur-
faces of contact is 0.3, find the distance at which the block stop on the hori-
zontal plane. Assume the magnitude of velocity at the end of slope is same as
that at the beginning of the horizontal plane.

8. A weight of 10N attached to a spring oscillates at a frequency of 60 oscillations
per minute. If the maximum amplitude is 30mm, find the tension induced in the

1. Calculate the magnitude of the force supported by the pin at B for the bell crank
loaded and supported as shown in Figure 1. [16]

2. (a) Explain the types of friction with examples.
(b) Two equal bodies A and B of weight ‘W’ each are placed on a rough inclined
plane. The bodies are connected by a light string. If µA = 1/2 and µB = 1/3,
show that the bodies will be both on the point of motion when the plane is
inclined at tan−1 (5/12). [6+10]

3. Power transmitted between two shafts 3.5 m apart by a crossed belt drive round
two pulley, 600 mm and 300 mm in diameters is 6KW. The speed of the langer
pulley is 220 r.p.m. The permissible load on the belt is 25 N/mm width of the belt
which is 5 mm thick. The coefficient of friction between the smaller pulley surface
and the belt is 0.35.
Determine:

(a) Necessary length of the belt


(b) The width of the belt, and
(c) The necessary initial tension in the belt. [16]

4. (a) State and prove parallel axis theorem.


(b) Find the centroid of the shaded lamina shown in Figure4b. [6+10]

5. A thin plate of mass ‘m’ is cut in the shape of a parallelogram of thickness ‘t’ as
shown in figure5. Determine the mass moment of inertia of the plate about the
x-axis. [16]

6. An enemy ship was located at a distance of 25km in north-west direction by a
warship. If the enemy ship is moving with a velocity of 18kmph N300 E, in which
direction the warship must move with a velocity of 36 kmph, to strike at its earliest.
Assume the fire range of warship is 5km. When is the shell to be fired? [16]

8. Two springs of stiffness 200 N/m are attached to a ball of weight 5 N as shown
in the figure 8. If the ball is initially displaced by 2.5 cm to the left and released,
find the period of oscillation of the ball. Find also the velocity of the ball when it

1. (a) A ball of weight ‘W’ rests upon a smooth horizontal plane and has attached
to its center two strings AB and AC which pass over frictionless pulleys at B
and C and carry loads P and Q, respectively, as shown in Figure1a. If the
string AB is horizontal, find the angle α that the string AC makes with the
horizontal when the ball is in a position of equilibrium. Also find the pressure
R between the ball and the plane.

(b) Determine the forces S1 and S2 induced in the bars AC and BC in Figure1b.

secondary shaft to a pulley of diameter 400 mm on the machine shaft. The
shafts are 3m apart. The secondary shaft has a speed of 100 r.p.m. Find the
maximum permissible stress in the belt if the safe working tension is 15 N/mm
width and µ = 0.3. [6+10]

4. (a) Differentiate between ‘polar moment of inertia’ and ‘product of inertia’
(b) Find the moment of inertia and radius of gyration about the horizontal cen-
troidal axis. shown in Figure 4b. [6+10]

5. (a) Prove that the mass moment of inertia of a right circular cone of base radius
‘R’ and height ‘h’, with respect to a diameter of the base is M (3R2 + 2h2 )/20
where M is the mass of the cone.
(b) Calculate the mass moment of inertia of a circular cone of base radius 300mm
and height 600mm about a line which passes through the mass centre of the
cone and which is parallel to the base of the cone. The mass density of the
cone is 2500 kg/m3 . [8+8]
6. (a) A railway car is moving with a velocity of 20m/s. The diameter of the wheel
is 1 m. The wheel is running on a straight rail without slipping. Find the
velocity of the point on the circumference at 600 in the clockwise direction
from the top at any instant.
(b) A 600 mm diameter flywheel is brought uniformly from rest to a speed of 350
rpm in 20 seconds. Determine the velocity and acceleration of a point on the
rim 2 seconds after starting from rest. [8+8]
7. (a) A weight ‘P’ attached to the end of a flexible rope of diameter d=5mm, is
raised vertically by winching the rope on a reel. The reel is turned uniformly
at the rate of 2 revolutions per second. Find the tension in the rope. Neglect
the inertia of the rope and the lateral motion of the weight ‘P’. As shown in
the Figure 7a.

(b) A right circular cylinder of radius ‘r’ and weight ‘W’ is suspended by a cord
that is wound around its surface. If the cylinder is allowed to fall, prove that
the center of gravity ‘C’ will follow a vertical rectilinear path and find the

acceleration ‘ac ’ along this path. Determine also the tensile force ‘S’ in the
cord. As shown in the Figure 7b. [8+8]

8. The vertical shaft shown in the figure 8 is fixed at the top and carries a flywheel
of weight 5000N welded at its bottom. The radius of gyration of flywheel is 250
mm. The diameter of the shaft is 100 mm and its length is 1000 mm. The modulus
of elasticity E=2×105 N/mm2 and the modulus of rigidity is 8.16 × 105 N/m2 .
Determine the frequencies for free torsional vibrations and longitudinal vibrations.

1. (a) A Prismatic bar AB of weight ‘W’ is resting against a smooth vertical wall at
‘A’ and is supported on a small roller at the point ‘D’. If a vertical force F
is applied at the end ‘B’, Find the position of equilibrium as defined by the
angle ‘θ’.{As shown in the Figure1a}.

(b) Two rollers of weights P and Q are connected by a flexible string DE and rest
on two mutually perpendicular planes AB and BC, as shown in figure 1b. Find
the tension (‘T’) in the string and the ‘θ’ that it makes with the horizontal
when the system is in equilibrium. The following numerical data are given.
P= 270 N, Q = 450 N, α = 300 . Assume that the string is inextensible and
passes freely through slots in the smooth inclined planes AB and BC. [6+10]

6. (a) A baloon is ascending with a velocity of 20 m/s above a lake. A stone is
dropped to fall from the balloon and the sound of the splash is heard 6 seconds
later. Find the height of the balloon when the stone was dropped. Velocity of
sound is 340 m/s.
(b) The acceleration of a particle in rectilinear motion is defined by the relation
a = 25 − 4s2 where ‘a’ is expressed in m/sec2 and ‘s’ is position coordinate
in metres. The particle starts with no initial velocity at the position s = 0.
Determine
i. the velocity when s = 3metres
ii. the position where the velocity is again zero
iii. the position where the velocity is maximum. [8+8]
