pographic errors are rare, but this is compensated for by the occasional mannerism, such as Professeur Koch (from

Germany). These comments should not be seen as criticisms. They are intended to draw the author's attention to areas in which improvement can make an already useful, not to mention popular, book even better for nonmedical readers and for the occasional medical person who wants a quick update on some topics.

indicate that if asthma is adequately treated the emotional factors will usually take care of themselves. Chapters that usefully extend the scope of the book include those on childhood asthma and asthma in family practice. This book is well written and will provide chest specialists, general internists, pediatricians and family physicians with readily assimilated, up-to-date information for the improved management of this common and often difficult-to-treat condition.

T . his comprehensive, mulX tiauthor edition of "Asthma" is a worthy successor to the first edition, which has become a classic. The topic of asthma is well covered in chapters on physiologic and pathologic features, the role of allergy and infection, psychologic factors, epidemiologic aspects and occupational asthma. Particularly useful to the practising clinician are the detailed sections on the role of various bronchodilators and prophylactic agents, such as cromoglycate and steroids, with particular emphasis on aerosol therapy. There is clearly room for controversy. For instance, Weinberger and Hendeles promote the use of theophylline, while Hetzel and Clark indicate that they see little role for theophylline in the modern management of asthma in adults. Similarly, the major role of psychologic factors proposed by Cohen and Lask is very much at odds with the view of the other authors (and that of most Canadian clinicians), who

In this book he, with the help of Tana Dineen, describes the current state of nuclear armament against the background of the tragedy of Hiroshima. The estimated 5000 nuclear warheads in the world today have the explosive power of more than a million Hiroshima bombs. A psychiatrist, Sommers outlines a behavioural approach to preventing war. Unfortunately, the steps he proposes to achieve a mental state that would prevent war are unlikely to be followed by the political and military leaders of the major powers.
