The championships were held from September 12 to 18, with more than 800 students from across Australia, aged from 10 to 19 years, competing in a range of swimming events. Josh competed in four events; 50 metre breast stroke, 50 metre butterfly, 50 metre freestyle relay and swam the butterfly leg in the 50 metre medley relay. Concluding the event on the third day with the sporting competition, Alisha and Caitlin again placed to receive ribbons while the rest of team did extremely well placing in the top half of the competition; gaining some top 10 times. The bush horses struggled with the damp turf. Next year the competition will be held in Theodore. Zone 14 pony club members will have alternative training methods to enhance their mounts preparation.
Zone 14 pony club members have returned from the Pony Club state titles in Gympie proud of their efforts against some of the best riders in the state and a team from NSW. A group of active residents of Blackall have taken the initiative and started up team sports night on Monday evenings. The regular event will provide a opportunity for community members to participate in sports that are otherwise not on offer. The first competition kicks off this Monday, October 12 with flag footy at the Blackall showgrounds. Each sport will be played for a 5 or 6 week period, enough to build up some substantial skills, and will then rotate through different team sports. The organisers are hoping that they will get a good turn up. Participants may either create their own teams for the evening, or turn up and make teams on the night. At no cost, the night kicks off at 6.30pm for an hour every Monday night.

A few spots of rain to report, just enough to remind us that it still does rain! Certainly very pleased no further heavy dust in the air for us however a bit of dust is not too bad when you consider the devastation and loss of life in Samoa after the tsunami and the earthquake on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia. We are extremely fortunate. This past weekend proved to be one of social events with the visit to our region by the Goondiwindi Garden Club. The tour visited country and town gardens, eight in total. The benefit to our community is considerable from a financial point of view as well as from the promotional point of view as word of mouth is always the best promotion. I know the visitors went home extremely tired but delighted with all they had experienced over the days they were here. My congratulations to the gardeners of the region; I believe the gardens were outstanding. The National Rugby League final played in Sydney saw the Melbourne Storm prevail over the Parramatta Eels in a hard fought game. After a season of being in the top few teams the win was well deserved. The football season is over for the year, I was extremely disappointed to have missed the Blackall Junior Rugby League Club presentation ceremony held at the Blackall NOVEMBER showgrounds multipurpose centre on Sunday, October 4 at 3 Blackall Memorial & Sports Club Melbourne Cup 9am. The conclusion of the season is the highlight of the year. Work on the Emmett Road also continues to advance. The Tambo branch of the Blackall-Tambo Regional Council is engaged in repair of flood damage to the Mt Playfair Road. We have welcomed Mr Dean Kneebone to the Blackall office on a temporary appointment, while the Manager of Corporate and Community Services and the Coordinator of the Tambo Multipurpose Centre are on leave. Dean brings a wealth of diverse experience to our Council workforce. On Tuesday, October 13 the Blackall Club is hosting a free informal and fun information session with key speaker Frank Team on key strategies and skills for career and employment pathways. project was aimed to encourage good citizenship, create awareness about people from local communities who have contributed in combat to maintaining Australias freedom and to build on the Towner committees efforts to honour Edgar Towner with a statue. The Edgar Towner story is one that the people in the community can relate to, including the students and they wanted to choose it. Rochelle Robinson who was involved in the project said that she felt it was important that they were documenting the life of someone who was not only local, and a hero, but also an exstudent of the state school. Ross Dwyer, the Honorary Secretary of the Order of Australia Association said that such projects demonstrated the diversity of exciting and interesting activities promoting commitment to and pride in Australian citizenship.

The garden at McLean Place has been revitalized with the addition of a mural by Brisbane-based artist Christian Griffiths. Christian designed and painted the 4 x 4 metre mural on the wall beside the famous Bushmans Hotel. The wall is used for the booster system for the new extension at McLean Place. The concept is based on an imaginative outlook contrasted with the traditional bush or outback scene. Christian used acrylic and aerosol paints to bring the formal garden and water feature to life in the McLean Place garden. Funded by the Blackall Tambo Regional Council, the mural was painted over three days and can be viewed from the ramp leading to the new extension. Barcoo Retirement Village Chairman Owen Stockwell said the mural has created a tranquil atmosphere in the outside area for residents and staff to enjoy.

many more people would visit the exhibition as it documented an important part of, and valuable asset to Blackalls history. It warmed my heart that the Jack Howe scrapbook made it onto this list. The exhibition featured an extract from Jack Howes scrapbook containing clippings of his shearing career which extended beyond his retirement in 1900. The exhibition also contained other documents of relevance to Blackall, including the 1891 Shearers Strike Manifesto, the 1868 Crown Land Alienation Act and the 1884 Land Act.

become involved in the National Partnership on Literacy and Numeracy. The program aims to improve literacy performance in students. Entitled Literacy a Pathway to Success, the program is part of the Literacy and Numeracy National Partnership, the focus of the program is on literacy, with improved reading comprehension being targeted. Assessment data consistently shows that students oral reading (ie. fluency, accuracy, and expression) is not matched by equivalent understanding and comprehension skills. During 2009 and 2010, the program will include a wide variety of strategies such as professional development for teachers and support staff in areas of literacy, continued assessment and monitoring of student progress, building strong curriculum leadership and effective teamwork throughout the school, providing appropriate quality resources and setting targets and tailoring programs to support reading skills
at every level. Participation in the National Partnership Literacy should see reading even more central in St Josephs school activities. To read confidently and fully understand what has been read is important for success in the world. Improving reading comprehension skills for all students will not only enhance all aspects of literacy, but further promote confidence and learning in all areas. *** A reminder that the grade 6/7 wine fundraiser will kick off straight after the holidays. All orders need to be in within 4-6 weeks. All wine orders will be back by the end of November; in plenty of time for those christmas celebrations and/or a few bottles to give away as christmas gifts. The wines were given a test run at the wine tasting a few weeks ago and everyone agreed that they were all very nice, so St Josephs are confidently recommending them. There are 7 wines to choose from; 3 reds, 3 whites and 1 champagne.

Gday all and welcome back to the last term of school for the year. I hope you all had a fantastic holiday even if it was a bit dusty. There are only nine weeks until the Christmas holidays, but I am sure no-one is counting down yet. Because it is the first week of school I thought you might enjoy some school-related activities. Please dont use the reasons I didnt do my homework on your teachers, because they read Eddie Emu too. Have a good week and make sure you DO YOUR HOMEWORK!

The tour concluded in Blackall with a morning visit to the gardens of Jenny and Barry Muir, and Lynette Davison. Goondiwindi Garden Club member Marian Marshall said that she had been overwhelmed with the roses in Blackall. Mary Arbuckle added that Everyone said to us that coming out this far west to look at gardens was a strange idea, but we have well and truly proven that wrong. Right: Marian Marshall and Mary Arbuckle from Goondiwindi admired Lynette Davisons garden earlier this week
