For seven generations the name BUTTING
has stood for quality and fexibility. More
than 1,300 employees process more than
40,000 t of stainless steel a year in the
family-owned middle-sized company.
Since 2004, BUTTING has been represented
in China. On the outskirts of Shanghai, in
Jiading, we possess a production hall for
pipeline production and customized pre-
fabrication for the Chinese market. Our aim
is to inspire our customers. This requires the
proximity of several services and products.
For the same reason in 2005 we decided
to establish a branch in Canada. With the
help of BUTTING Canada in Calgary we
offer our longstanding experience in the
manufacture of stainless steels faster and
directly to our Canadian customers.
Our core competences
Over the last few years, BUTTING has inves-
ted in the latest manufacturing techniques,
environmental protection and quality assur-
ance systems, to expand its core compet-
ences in the felds of materials, forming
and welding technology. We consider all
the material properties of stainless steels
throughout the value creation process. Our
know-how and our capabilities in surface
engineering guarantee you BUTTING prod-
ucts with maximum corrosion resistance.
Worldwide yardstick for
quality
Since BUTTING was founded, reliable qual-
ity management has been a prominent
pillar of our corporate philosophy. The
high quality and reliability of our products
are shown by the variety of applications in
which they are used in all branches of
industry, such as chemical plants, the
aircraft and aerospace industry, power
plants, environmental technology and
shipbuilding industry.
The continuous development of new
prod ucts and processes as well as the per-
manent improvement of the existing pro-
duction facilities have a long tradition at
BUTTING. Combining craftsmanship and
engineering know-how we have been fac-
ing the challenges of tomorrow together
with our customers for more than 230
years according to the motto: The impos-
sible is possible.
In our plant in Knesebeck pipes and com-
ponents of supreme quality are produced
for a multitude of industrial sectors. The
history of BUTTING is that of sound and
continuous growth based on entrepre-
neurial courage and farsightedness. This
maxim prompted Dr Hannshermann
Butting to found an affliated company in
Schwedt at the river Oder after the reuni-
fcation of Germany in 1991. Today
BUTTING in Schwedt is our expert manage-
ment for vessel and pipeline production,
as well as for international assemblies.

weIded pipes
BUTTING produces pipes of supreme
quality to be used worldwide. Since the
development of stainless steels we have
been processing a big variety of material
grades into pipes and components. Few
companies in Europe can point to such
longstanding experience and diversity as
BUTTING. Our competence in forming and
welding technology, materials engineering
and quality assurance is proven daily by
the fulflment of the requirements from
the various industrial sectors.
BUTTING can produce pipes from coil in
diameters ranging from 20 mm to

762 mm
and wall thicknesses up to 16 mm on sev-
eral production lines. Normal production
lengths are 6 m or 12 m, however pipes in
shorter fxed lengths or lengths up to 18 m
max. are also possible in numerous dimen-
sions without circumferential weld.
Pipes with wall thicknesses up to 70 mm
and dimensions up to 3,000 mm can be
produced on state-of-the-art production
lines continuously from single plates in
lengths up to 24 m without having to sub-
contract any of the necessary production
steps.

Wide selection in store
Since the company moved to Knesebeck in
Lower Saxony in 1945 a large number of
modern production halls have been con-
structed on a site which has grown to its
current size of 380,000 m. In an outdoor
area covering over 22,000 m, BUTTING
keeps permanent stocks of around 2,500 t
of stainless steel pipes in over 140 sizes,
from NB 15 to NB 800, e. g.

Welding technologies for all
requirements
BUTTING has both the processing facilities
as well as qualifed and certifed staff to
carry out all the usual welding processes.
All common weld procedures are used in
our continuous production. TIG welding
(see fg. 9) has proved successful over
many years and is a reliable and economic
procedure. The importance of laser weld-
ing (see fg. 8) has increased considerably
over the last decade. Laser welding is
noted for high welding speeds and metal-
lurgical advantages. The weld and heat
affected zone are only very narrow, im-
proving considerably the quality of the
welded joint. With the laser welding pro-
cess we are able to meet the requirements
for pipes and components free from under-
cuts of the chemical industry and food
and pharmaceutical industry.
For welding thick-walled plates, includ-
ing those of high alloy materials, we are
one of the few manufacturers in Europe to
use not only the submerged arc welding
method (see fg. 7), but also the effcient
electron beam welding process (EB-weld-
ing see fg. 10), with its excellent perfor-
mance and reproducibility.
Specialized piping
We describe the direct processing of the
high quality BUTTING pipe into a ready-
to-install component for industrial appli-
cations as piping technology. Combin-
ing a wide range of effective production
facilities with our know-how in forming
and welding technology and in materials
engineering opens up an impressive diver-
sity of design options for stainless steel
components. Working hand in hand with
our customers produces individual solu-
tions of the highest quality.

prcperties
The material properties of longitudinally
welded stainless steel pipes are already
defned during the production of the raw
materials (coils or plates) in the steel and
rolling mills.
During the further fabrication of the fat
products changes in the material proper-
ties are inevitable during forming and
welding. The optimized production pro-
cesses at BUTTING take into account spe-
cifc material properties of the stainless
steel, thus it is possible not only to reduce
the changes to a minimum, but also to
infuence the properties. This means that
a post weld heat treatment may be dis-
pensed with as the pipes would meet the
standard requirements even in the as-
welded condition.
In the case of special requirements re-
garding corrosion resistance, forming
properties, strength or structure of the
material, it is possible for BUTTING to
carry out post weld heat treatment to
improve both the parent metal and the
longitudinal weld, thus fulflling the most
stringent requirements (see diagram 2).
The heat treated condition of stainless
steels can be achieved by various proces-
ses, e. g. solution annealing, stabilization
annealing, stress relief annealing, recrys-
tallization annealing and soft annealing.
This can be done by induction annealing
during the production of pipes or by
means of a roller hearth furnace.

SpeciaI dimensicns
It is a tradition at BUTTING to keep up
with progress, new technologies and ap-
plications. We are committed and dedi-
cated to comply with many industrial and
customer specifcations. It is our strength
to fnd individual technical solutions to-
gether with our customers for many diffe-
rent applications with regard to geometry,
tolerances or surface conditions required.
Realizing ideas for the
future
For many years BUTTING has been pro-
ducing pipes in special dimensions for
various applications, e. g. for shell bodies,
pump jackets or industrial rollers. Depend-
ing on the requirement, we are in a posi-
tion to produce special geometries, e. g.
oval pipes, square and rectangular pipes
or polygonal pipes. As regards tolerances
for standard pipes, these refer mainly to
the outside diameters and inside diameters
of the pipes.
We produce longitudinally welded pipes
with special geometries from coil or from
plate. All technical requirements, like the
dimensions, material grades, tests to be
performed, as well as mechanical-techno-
logical properties required can be agreed
with us to ensure full compliance with
your special applications.
Welded profles
A very good example of customer oriented
technical solutions is the production of
square and hexagonal pipes which we
have been supplying to the nuclear indus-
try for more than 20 years.
For the European Research Institute CERN
we produce the beam screens (see fg. 16),
an oval pipe coated with copper. This
special beam conveying pipe is the core of
a circular research tunnel for the particle
acceleration.
An oval pipe in the dimension of 200 / 60
5 mm was turned into a sophisticated rail-
ing for the millenium bridge in London. We
would be pleased to receive your require-
ments for architectural and decorative
purposes.
Customers requirements
are met
U-profles and half shells with special
requirements and in many sizes can be
formed either from coil or from plate. For
the LHC project (Large Hadron Collider)
of CERN we were able to gather a lot of
experience in the production of half shells.
We supplied 40.000 metres of half shells
ID 550 11 mm, both convex and concave,
with a minimal curvature in order to en-
sure installation of the circular tunnel hav-
ing a circumference of 27 kilometres.
The impossible is possible
As regards the production of special geo-
metrical shapes, these are realized in
cooperation with various research institutes.
For trial purposes we received an order for
pipes in the shape of a clover-leaf. Besides
the special geometrical requirements, we
also had to guarantee the conductivity of
the material. For a prototype production
we succeeded in producing a special com-
ponent consisting of three identical spe-
cial parts which we joined by welding. It
goes without saying that again very tight
tolerances had to be complied with.
This shows that it is possible for BUTTING
to produce nearly any type of component
or engineering product, even semi-fnished
products for the automotive industry,
which are further processed by special
forming (see fg. 14).

fcrms and pcsiticns
The tolerances on shape and position for
the production of stainless steel pipes are
generally laid down in acknowledged na-
tional and international standards (e. g.
DIN, ASTM and ISO). The most commonly
used standard for longitudinally welded
pipes is the DIN EN ISO 1127, the toleran-
ces of which are put together in table 1.
During recent years BUTTING has been
specializing in the production of pipes
according to customer specifcations with
even more stringent requirements. In
order to guarantee smaller tolerances se-
lected material disposition, detailed pro-
duction planning and controlled produc-
tion processes are necessary, in addition
various mechanical and hydraulic calibra-
tion methods are available.

Tolerances for inside and
outside diameters
Right from the start, the customer deter-
mines the tolerances on diameter, includ-
ing the ovality of the pipes to be produced.
Depending on the intended use of the
pipes, tolerances on either inside diam-
eter or outside diameter are taken into
consideration. As regards the outside
diameter, it is possible for us to produce
to signifcantly smaller tolerances than
prescribed in the standard. Such restric-
tions are necessary in order to avoid later
internal mismatches in the piping system,
especially for the pharmaceutical industry.
For piggable pipes, pneumatic post con-
veyors and shell bodies, it is necessary to
take into account the inside diameter.
Where components will be subjected to
further forming processes, it is necessary
to consider special restrictions, e. g. the
thinning of the wall which occurs during
certain forming processes.
Additional subsequent calibration guaran-
tees the required provisions by the cus-
tomers regarding the ovality, true runn-
ing and straightness, especially for
pipes used as rollers in textile mills, print
and furnaces.
It is possible, for example, to reduce the
tolerance on straightness as prescribed by
ISO 5252 (see table 1) even further, viz:
down to 0.5 mm per 1,000.0 mm.
BUTTING guarantees the squareness of
the ends of pipes and components in the
defned fxed lengths. The necessary tight
tolerances must be defned according to
the outside diameter. This is a prerequisite
for subsequent orbital welding.
In order to guarantee the required toler-
ances, our production is subject to con-
tinual surveillance by our on-line Quality
Assurance system.

With the numerous material grades avail-
able on the market and the diversity of
industrial applications served, exact deter-
mination of the required surface condi-
tions is needed in service later. It is also
necessary to state if subsequent chemical
treatment or machining should be carried
out. It is important to defne the criteria
for the inside and outside surfaces, as well
as for the weld area. As regards rough-
ness measurements to be performed,
BUTTING has established a specifcation
(see table 2) covering 9 testing classes for
measurements in longitudinal and trans-
verse direction, as well as the amount of
testing for each individual case.
Depending on the raw materials selected,
specifc surface conditions can be achieved,
which are covered by DIN EN 10088-2,
table 5. The advantage of using cold
rolled material and wall thicknesses of up
to approx. 6 mm, is that roughness values
of R
a
0.5 microns max. are not exceeded.
This is, for example, a prerequisite for the
production of pipes for the food industry

materials specifc surface conditions are
required, then extensive subsequent ma-

In order to guarantee the customers qua-
lity requirements, careful handling during
the fabrication processes by the workshop
staff is crucial. The use of special tools,
e. g. in plastic or bronze ensures that the
optimum raw material properties are
maintained during the forming processes.
BUTTING guarantees that special rough-
ness requirements for the weld area are
complied with. To this end, the weld is
subjected to a smoothing operation by
rolling. Following the pipe production
process, chemical or mechanical surface
treatment is carried out.

As a rule, all pipes are subjected to full-
body pickling at BUTTING. This process
ensures the corrosion resistance of the
stainless steel pipes after the forming,
welding and annealing processes. Pickling
is a careful process which only insignif-
cantly changes the surface condition of
the raw materials. For special cleaning
and testing requirements, e. g. for the
aircraft and aerospace industry, a clean
room is available.
Besides the chemical surface treatment,
special customer requirements can be
complied with by grinding the inside and
outside surfaces. The grinding of the out-
side surfaces is mainly used for aesthetic
reasons. Prior to grinding the inside sur-
faces, the metallurgical properties should
be considered, with an option of using
cold rolled raw materials.
For the grinding of the outside surfaces,
BUTTING has cylindrical grinding ma-
chines at its disposal. In case of optimum
conditions prevailing, we can grind pipes
in sizes from NB 20 up to NB 350, in
lengths of 4 18 metres, using grit in the
range from 180 up to 400/polished fnish.
Table 4 covers the different roughness
requirements.
As regards grinding of the inside surfaces,
BUTTING has both cylindrical grinding
machines (NB 20 NB 100) and axial
equipment at its disposal. Furthermore,
shot peening using different peening ma-
terials can be performed for aesthetic pur-
poses. Pipes and components in lengths of
4.0 m up to 12.0 m and outside diameters
from 114.0 up to 762.0 m can be treated
by peening.

A high-performance Laser centre using
latest CNC machinery enables welding
and cutting of stainless steel pipes.
Laser welding not only offers advantages
regarding the welding of pipes, but also
for the production of various types of shell
bodies, as both the welding and cutting
is carried out in the same line. Above all,
Laser welding guarantees minimization
of the heat affected zone, and therefore
a reduction of stresses in the compo-
nents. Compared with other commonly
used weld procedures, Laser welding is
mainly noted for its cost-effectiveness.
At BUTTING Laser welding is possible
for sizes from NB 40 up to NB 1,500
(see table 5) and wall thicknesses up
to 8.0 mm without any addition of fller
metal, due to an energy of 8,000 W.
The multiple equipment enables cutting
by Laser to the required lengths for any
type of shell bodies having wall thick-
nesses up to 10.0 mm. Pipes in sizes from
NB 40 up to NB 1,500 can be cut in bulk
quantities (see table 5).
As regards the ends of the pipes or com-
ponents, reproducible geometries and vari-
ous types of cuts and angular cuts can be
selected. Laser cuts are much more uni-
form and free of burrs than common cuts
and guarantee the required tolerances on
shape and position, as well as squareness
of the ends.

CAD supported programmes enable nu-
merous subsequent processes in order to
comply with sophisticated requirements
for different cutouts. This is possible for
thicknesses up to 10.0 mm without any
deformations or burrs, at the same time
maintaining very tight tolerances.
Many different industrial sectors take
advantage of this versatility. We have pro-
duced cylindrical lamps in special sizes
(see fg. 33), shell bodies for catalyzers in
cars or fame pipes for gas burner heating
systems furnished with special cutouts.
One of the most outstanding projects of
the recent years realized by BUTTING was
the supply of a total of 73,000 metres of
stainless steel pipes in sizes from NB 50
up to NB 200 for the fronts of three buil-
dings at the Canary Wharf in London.
The pipes were supplied in the ground
condition, and decorated with Laser cut-
outs (see fg. 32).

Besides the standard programme, BUTTING
also produces components ready for in-
stallation, thus offering our industrial
customers cost-effective and very specifc
complete solutions, meeting very high
quality criteria at the same time. The pro-
duction centre provides CNC facilities of
turning, boring and milling, improving
the pipe surfaces and fulflling particular
requirements.

Well-ftting components
By the turning process, very accurate
dimensions can be achieved, e. g. for pipe
pieces used for ball valves. Extensive
machining is required for shell bodies for
pumps and armatures. We supply screens
for water treatment plants and riser pipes
for wells, furnished with threaded ends.
Precise production and turning results are
the BUTTING quality criteria applied for
Fig. 37: Manufacture of riser pipes for
well building ( 508 9.53 3,000 mm)
components used as industrial rollers, e. g.
for the textile and printing industry. Pre-
cise milling processes guarantee the re-
quired roundness and true running of the
rollers. Based on this experience, we have
developed the BUTTING HeRo

(Heat
resisting roller). This uncooled furnace
roller, produced to very tight tolerances,
is used in roller hearth furnaces for heat
treatment in the steel and stainless steel
producing industry (see fg. 39).
However, the prerequisite for the machi-
ning processes is our pipe of supreme
quality, which is cut to the required length
by Laser, as already mentioned. All other
conditions for the milling processes are
complied with by BUTTING (see overview
at this page). In addition, the economic
and technological requirements of the
customer can be met as the milling and
boring of components are carried out in
computerized tools. Depending on the
intended use, not only standard materials
are produced, but also high alloyed mate-
rials and titanium alloys.

Besides machining processes, BUTTING
also offers many forming possibilities. The
prerequisite for the production of compo-
nents is a base pipe produced with a de-
fned weld structure and optimum toler-
ances of shape and position. Modern ma-
chining and forming equipment guarantee
precision of the components. Besides the
development of suitable tools, our engin-
for example resonators in a very special
form for a special project of the nuclear
research. Innovative forming techniques
developed by BUTTING made this pro-
duction possible (see fg. 42). For the
Nuclear Institute CERN in Switzerland
we produce pipes with expanded ends
(609.6 OD 6.35 mm wall) for the helium
transfer lines. Again very tight tolerances
of the pipe ends, as well as their stability,
must be maintained in order to ensure
orbital welding during subsequent instal-
lation (see fg. 44).
Stainless steel pipe components are in-
creasingly used in the automotive indus-
try, e. g. as exhaust pipes in heavy Diesel
engines, for which precise outside dimen-
sions were achieved by calibration. Laser
cutting was used to get the initial shape
and the fnishing operations consisted of
fanging and boring (see fg. 40).
eers have developed and established pro-
duction processes to suit the various prod-
ucts we offer. Therefore, it is possible at
BUTTING to carry out further processing
by mechanical and hydraulic expansion /
calibration, bending and forming pro-
cesses, taking into account very tight
tolerances. Provisions for specifc material
properties are already made for the raw
materials purchased and during the pro-
duction process.
Calibration of either inside or outside di-
ameter guarantees precise and reproduc-
ible pipe components. Further processing
comprises operations like faring, fanging,
and beading, as well as changing of con-
tours by expansion and shrinking, thus of-
fering our customers comprehensive ser-
vice in many different industrial sectors.
Many different types of components
were produced by BUTTING in the past,

The further processing of pipes into high
profle semi-fnished parts and ready-to-
install components due to our extensive
prefabrication capacities is an essential
part of our business activities. This means
that the list of the various types of compo-
nents producible is endless. In the follow-
ing we present you some examples of
projects during the realization of which
we were able to put our expertise in the
feld of piping technology to good use.
Please put us to the test!
Water for the Saudi Arabian
desert
On a regular basis BUTTING supplies
companies engaged in drilling and well
building with pipes and prefabricated
parts which guarantee a high level of
operational reliability and corrosion resis-
tance. Only recently, BUTTING success-
fully processed the biggest single order to
date for this specifc industry consisting
of 8 well heads and 408 riser pipes in the
size 141.3 6.55 mm. Approx. 2,500 m
of stainless steel pipes and roughly 840
fanges were produced and processed in
our facilities in Knesebeck.
The prefabricated parts in the material
grade 1.4462 (duplex) were used in a
ground water recovery project in the
Saudi Arabian desert.
Attention: fre
All the experience we have gathered over
many years and the know-how in piping
technology could be proven by furnishing
a fre fghting system on an offshore plat-
form with flters, half shells, riser pipes
and well heads. In view of the specifc ser-
vice conditions the flters and half shells
were made in superduplex material.
The products had to be manufactured acc.
to the NORSOK specifcations, thus requir-
ing sophisticated welding techniques and
extensive testing (dimension control, dye-
penetrant testing etc.) had to be carried
out at BUTTING.
Ambitious building services
engineering
The Burj in Dubai is the highest building
in the world and it took roughly 5 years
to complete it. BUTTING was awarded
an order for especially designed pipes for
decoration purposes. After an elaborate
fnish was applied to the pipes they were
installed horizontally around the building.
The high quality of our pipes and the pro-
mised short delivery times for all 4 deli-
very lots required had won us the order
and thus 11,200 m of pipe having an out-
side diameter of 273 mm in various wall
thicknesses and fxed lengths from 5 to
12 m were produced by us.
Fig. 49: Pipe shell body made by BUTTING for application in versatile valves for
the food industry

Fig. 48: Piping technology at the highest stage: drive roller
Fig. 50: The pipes for the Burj Dubai
got a special surface grinding
To maintain the required tolerance on
outside diameter needed for the subse-
quent bending processes throughout the
entire production of the pipes represented
an exceptional challenge. All pipes were
therefore subjected to induction annealing
and after the full-body pickling, the pipes
underwent surface grinding.

Innovative double tube
concept
While working on a new design of a heat
exchange reformer, one of our internatio-
nal customers devised a double tube
concept. For process-related reasons the
inner and outer pipes in the dimensions
88.9 3.0 mm and 114.3 4.0 mm for this
new double tube system were required
to be manufactured in two different high
performance nickel materials. A further
huge challenge was the necessity to pro-
cess the pipes with different tolerances of
shape and position owing to their produc-
tion process and out of different mate-
rial grades in such a way as to guarantee
The branches are made from pipes which
are produced from coil in our pipe mill
acc. to the requirements of the DIN 11866
standard, class H 30 for pharmaceutics. We
guarantee optimum product quality and a
homogeneous high quality of the surfaces
owing to an inside weld free from grooves
and roughness values of < 0.8 micron
across the weld and grinding of the out-
side surfaces using grit 400.
The high quality components must meet
the most stringent demands with regard
to very tight tolerances, precisely defned
material properties and restricted mechan-
ical requirements. Furthermore, BUTTING
provides the necessary prerequisites for
subsequent orbital welding with repro-
ducible parameters.
Annular tube boiler for a
bottling plant
In a newly designed bottling plant an
annular tube boiler is used as a central
vessel to hold and discharge foodstuffs
directly into bottles. Besides the very tight
tolerances prescribed for the welded con-
struction, the requirements for surfaces
in contact with the media are also very
demanding. The maximum roughness
R
a
of the inner surface of the vessel is
0.8 micron. For the welded joints rough-
ness must not exceed 4 microns. For the
forming of the basic pipe ( 273 mm) for
the tube ring, BUTTING maintained a ring
diameter tolerance of 3 mm. This opera-
tion was followed by machining.
An average of up to 200 branch holes per
ring had to be provided, as well as the
necessary weld end preparations. By using
an innovative and effective welding
method for the welding of the bottling
outlets, the shrinking normally caused
by welding was kept to a minimum. This
allowed a very good and above all repro-
ducible weld quality. After completion of
the boiler fnal inspection by an indepen-
dent classifcation company acc. to the
rules of the pressure equipment directive
or ASME is performed. The production of
the annular tube boiler requires numer-
ous production processes. All operations,
from pipe production, forming, welding,
machining and surface treatment to fnal
inspections are carried out in our plant in
Knesebeck.
The aforementioned projects are exam-
ples of what can be produced in this spe-
cifc department which we call special-
ized piping or piping technology and
will give you an idea of the diversity and
combination of machining and fabrication
processes we offer. We would be pleased
to realize your ideas! We are your compe-
tent partner from prototype production
to series production, from small produc-
tion lots to mass production anything is
possible.

impeccable conditions for circular welding
in each section of the system. It was also
required to telescopically align the 11 m
beaded inner pipes into the outer pipes
of the same length without any problem.
By means of a special test-rig the installa-
tion of the pipes was simulated at a ratio
of 1 : 1 in order to examine the required
tolerances of shape and position and to
record them. All requirements were met
by BUTTING and this innovative reactor
has been in service now for several years
and has proven successful.
Shell bodies for valves
Valves are the essential control elements
in modern process plants for the treatment
of liquids for the beverage and food indus-
try, as well as for pharmaceutics. BUTTING
has been supplying shell bodies on a regu-
lar basis for many years, which are used
as welding branches in valve bodies.

Logistic processes are rendered more ef-
fcient by the packing we use, e. g. the
loading and off-loading times are re-
duced, less safety measures are needed,
easier trans-shipments in the case of
collect freight and storage without any
additional equipment.
Besides the transport by trucks, it is also
possible to ship by rail via our own rail
link in Knesebeck. Transport by barge is
also possible via the harbour in Wittingen,
which has direct access to the Elbe-
Lateral-Canal.
In Schwedt direct access to the European
waterways is possible now via the new
Oder harbour.
