be in the hunt to extend his domination of that division, while ending an Eldora dry spell. Allison has amassed 14 wins thus far, of the 106 events in the record books, to sit atop the list of 34 drivers that have accumulated Eldora checkered flags. But, it has been since 2005 that the veteran has seen victory lane. Since then he has knocked on the door multiple times, but has been unable to seal the deal. Nonetheless, Allisons stronghold seems intact. His nearest active competitor is Kyle Sauder, with 11 wins, and after that it would be Butch Schroeder as his next rival. Schroeder, with his May 29 checkered flag, has 3 wins to his credit. The all Sprint Car doubleheader will be preceded in the afternoon, by Eldoras annual CruiseIn from 2 - 5 p.m.. At 4:30 p.m., the fans will be invited into the Eldora pits for a driver meet and greet for one hour.
Randy Waltmire, Coldwater Chief of Police, was the guest speaker at the July 19 meeting of the Coldwater Kiwanis Club. Chief Waltmire updated members on the staffing and activity levels of his department. Currently, eight full-time and three part-time officers are employed. Waltmire, who has served as chief for five years, noted that calls per month have risen from 1400 to about 2500 in the past five years. Even though the numbers of burglaries, property damages, thefts and similar crimes have dropped in recent years, drugs have become a huge issue. Drug-related arrest numbers were 63 in 2009, 51 in 2010 and 55 already in 2011. Marijuana, cocaine, heroin, and ecstasy abuse continues, but bath salts

Saturdays July 30 doubleheader, presented by NAPA Auto Parts, will offer Eldora Speedway fans the rare opportunity to witness both winged and non-winged Sprint Cars on the same card. A vastly different degree of technique and driving style accompanies each of the forms of open wheel racing. Whereas the winged Sprint Cars rely on the emphasis of the aerodynamics of the top mounted wing to guide the cars around the one-half mile clay oval at high speed, the non-winged cars rely more on raw driver ability to manhandle the cars. Chassis set-up and coordination between the pit crew and driver is paramount to a successful non-winged run. Robert Ballou appears to have the handle on that combination with two victories recorded from the three previous non-winged Sprint Car events that have been staged since 2009,

as part of the Road to the Jack Hewitt Classic series. The colorful Ballou drove to victories in 2009 and 2010, but when the tour invaded Eldora in April of this Spring, he struggled to a 15th place finish after an early race skirmish. Matt Westfall captured that race. A Mother Nature shortened series this year finds Westfall on top of the tour points, with a six point margin over Justin Grant. In addition to the April Eldora victory, Westfall triumphed at Waynesfield in May. To date 64 different drivers have competed in the three Hewitt tour events completed to date. Ballou, after his dismal Eldora showing in April, has been absent from the tour, but is always a threat when nonwinged Sprint Cars invade the high banks. For the winged counterparts, their event will be sanctioned by the NRA (National Racing Alliance) Sprint Invaders, and veteran Tim Allison will

have become more widely abused in Mercer County. Chief Waltmire said bath salts can produce paranoia, suicidal tendencies, bleeding, heart attacks, seizures, and strokes, plus it produces in the user a severe craving for more of the product. Observing an abuser suffer the effects of the drug is frightening, he reported.

On Sunday, July 24 at 2:20 a.m. Ptl. Ryan Kantner was on a traffic stop on E. Main Street at Fourth Street. Another officer, Ptl. Speckman, arrived to see if Ptl. Kantner needed assistance. While Ptl. Kantner was talking to Ptl. Speckman at his cruiser, a vehicle driven by Jodi L. Brandon, 45, 603 Devonshire Dr., Celina, drove by the traffic stop westbound. Ptl. Kantner observed Brandons vehicle and illuminated his flashlight as she was not moving over. Brandons vehicle continued without moving over causing Ptl. Kantner to jump onto the cruiser to avoid being struck. Officer Speckman stated that Brandons vehicle was less than a foot from Ptl. Kantner as he jumped out of the way. Ptl. Speckman stopped the vehicle and upon approach could detect a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from the vehicle. Brandon was given field sobriety tests in which she failed and was subsequently placed under arrest for operating a vehicle under the influence. Brandon was taken to the Celina Police Department for a breath test in which she refused. When notified that she was going to be transported to the Mercer County Jail, Brandon began to resist officers. She had to be physically restrained and handcuffed and carried to the cruiser for transport as she refused to walk. Once in the cruiser, Brandon began slapping herself in the face and told the officer that she was going to file charges against him for assault and report that he only arrested her because she refused to perform sexual favors for him. A Celina police officer also witnessed her actions and followed Ptl. Speckman to the jail to make sure there werent any further problems or accusations. Her disorderly behavior continued at the jail until she was placed into a holding cell. Brandon was charged with OVI and resisting arrest and incarcerated in the Mercer County Jail with her bond set at $35,000. The Coldwater Police Department would like to thank the Celina Police Department for their help in this situation.

Luke Ontrop was the winner of the Identify the Flags contest held at the Coldwater Public Library as part of their One World, Many Stories summer reading program. Luke won 4 tickets to see the Cincinnati Reds play the New York Mets on July 26. His entry was randomly chosen from the sixteen who correctly identified the flags of 25 countries.

OFF THE WALL

It was easy for folks in our part of Ohio to strike up a conversation with friends and strangers alike last week, even though the wrong word might offend someone, what with our current political and economic situation. The weather, however, almost always works as a safe icebreaker in any conversation. With our extreme conditions, I never met a person all week who did not respond with exceptional enthusiasm to an inquiry about the weather and how they were coping. The weather also filled a lot of minutes on the local and national newscast. We saw tables and graphs that had highs in the 90s with notices that it was even worse other places where they were expecting to see triple figures. We were then treated to lectures about heat indexes which almost always exceeded 100 degrees. This number was supposedly to justify our suffering and high electricity bills. When we grew tired of mere numbers, there was always the shots of people frying eggs on the street. This year they also baked cookies on a car dashboard and pizza somewhere. These stunts are not as visually impressive as having reporters stand in snowdrifts in January, leaning and falling in horizontal rains and winds during coastal hurricanes, or standing in tornado wreckage after a storm hit some community in the heartland. It is harder to become original with heat, but I saw some TV crew place an attractive lady in an auto with no air conditioning or open windows. She lasted about 10 minutes and 132 degrees. At least it was an attempt to be a little original and perhaps the next newscast

Observations ... by John Bruns director might let the reporter HOW HOT WAS IT?

POSTMASTER:

A Look Back
From the Archives of the Mercer County Chronicle 10 YEARS AGO (2001) What is thought to have been the double-log (two story) dwelling of the Anthony Shane family several generations ago has been restored and relocated to Shanes Park in Rockford. It will be dedicated by The Rockford Historical Society on July 29. 25 YEARS AGO (1986) Cincinnati Reds majority owner Marge Schott got a taste of old-fashioned rural life during a milking contest Saturday night at Riverfront Stadium to kickoff the annual Farmers Night festivites. At the other end of Marges bovine friend is Cassella dairy farmer Mike Broering, who provided the Holstein cows used in the milking contest. 50 YEARS AGO (1961) Matt Schwietermans crew has three cranes, three bulldozers and eight dump trucks busy on excavation operations for the Celina Insurance Groups new building in Celina. They will have to remove 12 to 15 thousand yards of dirt to complete this project, after having removed the foundation of the old school building.

Going through some old papers on this computer, I came across an article I thought many of you out there could use in your everyday living. I hope you enjoy it and hope many of you will post it on the refrigerator for the kids to read. WHAT I HAVE LEARNED I have learned that no matter what happens and how bad it seems today, life does go on, and it will be better tomorrow. Ive learned that you can tell a lot about a person

by the way he/she handles three things: a rainy day, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights. I have learned that regardless of your relationship with your parents, you will miss them when they are gone from your life. I have learned that making a living is not the same thing as making a life. I have learned that life sometimes gives you a second chance. I have learned that you should not go through life with a catchers mitt on both hands. You need to be able to throw something back. I have learned that if you pursue happiness, it will elude you. However, if you focus on your family, your friends, the needs of others,

your work and doing the very best you can, happiness will find you. I have learned that whenever I decide something with an open heart, I usually make the right decision. I have learned that even when I have pains, I do not have to be one. I have learned that everyday, you should reach out and touch someone. dress a little more appropriately for the hot weather conditions. If I felt my companion needed a smile, I often responded to their comments about the heat, I could use about five more degrees myself. I received a variety of reactions to my weather observations and inquiries, many of which were not suitable for this publication. I would suggest the best source of hot weather humorous one liners can be found in one of my favorite old time movies, Good Morning Vietnam. Robin Williams played the character Adrian Cornauer, who was an unconventional disk jockey broadcasting on military radio during that conflict. The movies dialogue deserves the presentation only Robin Williams could deliver. We are constantly warned to pace ourselves in these weather conditions, so I think I may see if Good Morning Vietnam is still available at the local rental shop, turn down the lights and the thermostat, and forget about the weather and writing.

PRAYER OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN

(Never Known To Fail) Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh Star of the Sea, help me and show me you are my mother. Oh Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in my necessity. (make request) There are none that can withstand your power. Oh Mary conceived without sin, pray for us, who have recourse to thee (three times), Holy Mary, I place this prayer in your hands (three times). Say this prayer for three consecutive days and then you must publish and it will be granted to you. Thank you S.L.

ARA While living to the age of 90 was once a rare feat, it is becoming increasingly common. You may be surprised to learn that the fastest growing demographic in the country is people over the age of 85. According to the latest life insurance mortality tables, 38 percent of men and half of women age 65 today can expect to live to the age of 90 or beyond. Being able to live a long and full life is good news, of course. But you will have to plan well to be sure that you dont run out of income when you may need it the

most. Here are some suggestions from Dr. Robert Pokorski, The Hartfords chief medical strategist, for planning a retirement that may include a 90th birthday celebration: Consider buying a life insurance policy with an optional longevity rider. While the main purpose of life insurance is to provide income to your heirs when you die, paying extra for a longevity rider will allow you to begin receiving installments of your own death benefit when you turn 90 and meet the riders eligibility requirements. A $500,000 policy works like this: When you reach the age of 90, you can elect to receive a guaranteed minimum withdrawal benefit of up to 1 percent of the death benefit of your life insurance policy. In this example, you may receive monthly payments of as much as $5,000 per month for eight years. Even if you eventually withdraw the entire death benefit, a guaranteed residual death benefit will be provided, subject to the terms of the rider. Consider purchasing an annuity to cover many of your fixed expenses later in life. Making conservative investments like this can help ensure that youll have a reliable source of income to cover such necessities as rent or mortgage payments, utilities, prescriptions, groceries, insurance and transportation. Postpone retirement. While you might consider putting off retirement to be a bad thing, you may decide to continue working in order to increase your monthly Social Security benefit. Plan for a health emer-

gency. Nobody likes to think about becoming ill, but planning for health-care emergencies is a part of smart retirement planning, especially when you consider that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 70 percent of retirees will need to pay for chronic care sometime during their lives. Turning 90 is a milestone worth celebrating. With good planning, you could live a long and comfortable life without worrying too much about your finances.

ArA Aging gracefully is all about taking a proactive approach to your future well-being you anticipate the inevitable changes and do whats necessary to stay healthy and fit. the same principles are true for your home. you need to assess the necessary changes that must be made around your home to keep it fit, and you safe, so you and your home can successfully age together. helping your home age gracefully doesnt mean adding industrial-looking apparatuses throughout the house. in fact, with lowes Accessible home program, youll never have to sacrifice style for function. Plus, if you do these projects proactively, youll save money in the long run. Julie Sussman and Stephanie Glakas-

You and your home: Aging gracefully together

tenet, authors of the national bestselling Dare to repair series of books, have teamed with lowes to provide you with some can-do projects to make your home more accessible for everyday living. Safety in a shower/tub -- A handheld shower unit is a perfect solution for anyone who has to sit while showering. use a plumbers wrench or an adjustable wrench to remove the old shower head; if difficult to remove, apply lubricating spray. remove any residue from threads on shower arm. Apply teflon tape to threads, wrapping it counterclockwise, three or four times. Place hose of new shower unit onto end of shower arm, turning it clockwise. insert hand shower into the shower arm mount, rotating it to desired spot. use adjustable wrench to tighten. handheld shower units now come in a variety of finishes and sizes sure to spruce up anyones shower. Getting a better handle on knobs - For anyone who suffers from arthritis, a lever handle is much easier on the joints than a knob. Plus, lever handles can dress up the plainest of doors. use a screwdriver to remove the screws on the old doorknob. insert stems of exterior lever horizontally into the holes in the latch case. Place interior lever on the protruding spindle, aligning stems with screw holes. insert screws and tighten with screwdriver. Avoiding slips if you cant bear the sight of a bare floor and dont want to remove the beautiful rugs in your home,

you must properly secure all of them. All rugs, including doormats, should be secured to the floor with non-skid tape. Preventing falls A stair handrail is designed to aid in ascending and descending stairs. But, why stop at having only one handrail per stairway? make each stairway more symmetrical and safe by having a second one installed. Providing stability todays shower grab bar is not your fathers (or hospitals) grab bar. the choices in style, size, color and installation will make you wonder why you waited this long to have one. its easy to install, just be sure to follow the manufacturers instructions completely. Active Aging ~ Keeping Yourself in the Game

The Gardens at St. Henry would like to give the following tips for achieving a healthy, happy active aging lifestyle. As with most things in our society, Baby Boomers are redefining the concept of aging for themselves and their parents. No longer is aging considered a state of decline. Instead, aging is now seen as a transitional phase during which individuals can and should remain active and engaged in a full life. 1. Invest in a good pair of shoes: Foot pain doesnt have to be part of the aging process. Keeping your feet happy, keeps you happy. 2. Play Games: Games not only keep your brain working, but they help you maintain critical social connections with others. Trivia, math, memory, acting games-all engage your brain and your social skills. 3. Increase your physical activity: Physical activity does a lot of good, not just for your physical health but for maintaining cognitive skills as well. Take a walk everyday; even if you have an assistive device, like a cane or a walker, you need to keep moving. Daily stretching and balancing exercises help you not only increase flexibility but avoid falls as well.

REMEMBER: YOU DONT STOP PLAYING BECAUSE YOU GROW OLD, YOU GROW OLD BECAUSE YOU STOP PLAYING

pulleys of diameters from 3 to 8 inches, costing between $2.50 and $4.40. The New Idea VariSpeed Engines were recommended for all kinds of jobs that required a better than average power unity, such as Concrete Mixers, Milking Machines, Sprayers for Orchards, Paint Sprayers, Small Sand Elevators, or Onion and Potato Graders. At the Old Fashioned Farmers Antique Tractor Exhibit, Pete Schaeffer told me that he had talked with Delmar Hess, from Sidney, who also has a New Idea Gas Engine built at Sandwich, Illinois. When I talked with Delmar Hess, he told me that Don Gerlach, Piqua, also has a NI Gas Engine. Stop by this August 6-7 Exhibit of New Idea Farm Equipment and Antique Tractors at the north side of the park, at the Coldwater Community Picnic. Pick up a free bookmark with the dates of different New Idea Farm Equipment and the dates of various owners of the New Idea Company over the past century. If you want to exhibit a New Idea Gas Engine made at Sandwich, or other New Idea Equipment and/ or Antique Tractors at this 2011 Coldwater Picnic, you are most welcome. For questions, contact me. ow this is one satisfying summer salad! Guam-native Connie Guerrero really impressed me and the Kitchen Crew with her flavor-packed Spicy Grilled Beef Salad. Commonly served as a side dish in Connies homeland, this mouthwatering salad is a breeze to toss up and is filling enough to be enjoyed as lunch fare or even as a dinner starter. Not a fan of beef? Try it with chicken or fish! See step-by-step photos of Connies Spicy Grilled Beef Salad recipe and thousands more recipes from other hometown Americans at:

International Gold, Silver and Diamond Buyers paying on the spot for valuables this week in Celina
By Debi Lambert
STAFF WRITER Celina-area residents are in for a rare treat when the International Gold, Silver and Diamond Buyers (IGSDB) host an event here, from July 26th - 30th, at the Romers Westlake Lodge. The company has identi ed this region as prime territory for purchasing valuable gemstones and precious metalsespecially gold and silver. The IGSDB estimates that local residents have millions of dollars worth of valuables that they no longer need or want. That is where the IGSDB comes inthey specialize in buying those items from local sellers in the U.S., Canada and Europe. Items like gold coins, scrap gold, sterling silver, tea sets and diamond rings are in high demand right now, and IGSDB is purchasing massive quantities of them on behalf of their global network of collectors, dealers and re neries. Currently on an international tour, IGSDB has included Celina on its list of stops for this week. Residents are urged to mark their calendar for this special opportunity to meet oneon-one with gold, silver and diamond specialists. Because of IGSDBs low overhead, extensive resources and massive volume, the company is often able to pay out more than other dealers and retailers. Many customers are surprised at how much they are offered for seemingly small amounts. I had two bent herringbone necklaces, a class ring, and some outdated earrings that I brought to a show. I walked out with $425 in less than 15 minutes, said a satis ed guest. Providing an economic boost to each region it visits, the IGSDB projects to pay out $350,000 at each eventa testament to the high volume of items they purchase and the prime prices being paid. Offers are made based on rarity, numismatic value, condition and market value. Company spokesman Matthew Enright says, We just paid $4,700 for a loose 1.25carat diamond. Our mission is to pay local residents on the spot for loose gemstones, ne jewelry, coins and precious metalsespecially silver and gold. The company has seen a huge in ux of gold lately. Customers have been scrambling to cash into the recordhigh value of gold, adds Enright. For those who are unsure if their items are genuine gold or silver, or simply costume, company will test it for free. The best strategy is to bring all items to the show for a free evaluation from our specialists. It always amazes me how a small handful of gold and silver can turn into hundreds of dollars in just a few moments. We test, weigh and buy items right on the spot, Enright says. At a recent show, a smalltown dentist had a nice pay day. I have been collecting dental gold for years from patients who didnt want their extracted teeth. It really added upmy check is for over $31,000! While most people dont have buckets of dental gold at their ngertips, they do have $750 worth of scrap gold scattered throughout their homes, according to industry specialists. In addition to scrap gold, ne jewelry and gemstones, coins are a big hit. Offers will be made on all coins dated 1965 and earliergold coins, silver, silver dollars, half dollars, quarters, nickels and dimes. Enright explains, U.S. coins made before 1965 are worth more than their legal tender amount because they contain 90% silver. Rare dates and mint marks can make them even more valuable. We recently paid $78,000 for an amazing coin collection. One couple brought in a rusty coffee can lled with silver coins, sawdust, and a dead spider. The can had been in the basement for years. We were happy to send them home with a check for more than $700! Celina-area residents should start collecting their valuables now to bring to the free event, which runs Tuesday - Saturday. Deals will be made and money will be paid on the spot. Attendance is expected to be high, but no appointment is needed. Enright encourages everyone to take advantage of this special opportunity to meet directly with specialists from the International Gold, Silver and Diamond Buyers. He concludes, Its a great chance for people to cash in their old diamonds, jewelry, coins and scrap gold. This is a sellers market, so dont miss out!
