Application: Go Baby!

Executive Summary
The GoBaby! application is designed to provide the most important information needed to care for a child in an efcient manner. The main design goals revolve around the idea that the application will be used on a mobile device in a location other than the users home (e.g., on the go). We have created a paper prototype to be used in informal usability testing. Our goal is to identify potential issues with the application's design. In our test we will ask users to interact with the prototype to accomplish three main tasks: 1. Create a New GoBaby! Prole 2. Share a Prole With Another GoBaby! User 3. Use GoBaby! To Locate a Nearby Doctors Ofce or Hospital This document outlines the details of our usability test plan, to be executed in class on February 14th. Our methodology, a test script, post-task questions and post-test questions are included.

Methodology
The GoBaby! iPhone application will undergo usability testing with the following parameters.

Participants: Five participants will be selected from the Winter Quarter 2010-2011 DePaul University graduate class HCI 440-801. Three women and two men between the ages of 21-65 will be tested individually. All of the participants are considered to be comfortable to expert users of computer/mobile technology in general and the iPhone device in particular. Testing Environment: Usability testing will take place on: Monday February 14th 2011 5:45PM-9:00PM DePaul University Lewis Center 25 East Jackson Blvd. #1217 Chicago, Illinois 60604 The testing room is a standard DePaul University lecture room and will be congured to facilitate testing. Other usability testing, unrelated to the GoBaby! application, will also be taking place in the room. Reasonable steps will be taken to create a quiet and distraction free environment, but there will be no way to create complete privacy for the participant. The test will not be recorded on video, but may be recorded via audio. Test Procedure: The usability test will be an informal test using a low delity (paper) test. We have chosen this test method because the application is in an early stage of development and we do not have the time and resources required for more rigorous testing. Testing will follow the following format:

Application: Go Baby!

1.

Introduction: The participant will be greeted by the administering team member and read a brief introduction. This introduction will provide a description of the application along with purpose of the test. The test administrator typically would present the participant with a consent form to sign, but for this test we will be waiving the signed consent requirement. The test administrator will however inform the participant that we are testing the functionality of the application, not the participant themselves. Testing: The participant will then be asked to complete three tasks using the paper prototypes. The test administrator will describe the task while another team member will physically manipulate the prototype to respond to the participants actions. As the participant presses the buttons on the prototype they will be asked to think out loud, sharing any immediate reactions with the administrator. Other members of the testing team will make observations and record the participants comments while performing the test, noting any areas of difculty for the participant while completing the task. The task will be considered complete when the participant reaches the nal goal screen or if the participant fails to reach the goal screen within 5 minutes. The total testing time should not exceed 30-45 minutes per participant. Post Test Questions: After each task the participant will be asked a series of questions to gage their reaction to the task. The questions will take the form of a questionnaire that will be completed and returned to the test administrator. Then upon completion of all three tests a nal questionnaire will be given to gage overall application performance. This information will be compiled with the administrator and test observer notes and analyzed to nd areas of improvement in the application. Debrieng: Upon completion of the testing and question, the participant will be asked if they have any questions or concerns about the test. If there are

Test Script
NOTE: Script is written in a conversational style. Its not necessary to read it verbatim, but will help the moderator to keep the tone of the interview casual.

Session Introduction (5 minutes) Hi, welcome and thank you for agreeing to take part in our research study. My name is (xxxx), and this is (xxxx), who will be observing what we are doing today. During this session Ill be reading from a script to make sure my instructions to everyone who participates in our study are the same. We are here today to learn how users interact with the iPhone application GoBaby and how well this product works for its intended audience, users like you. We have brought here to see what you think of the app: what seems to work for you, what doesnt, and so on. The application is currently in an early stage of development, so not everything you are going to see will work right. This session should take about 30-35 minutes. We are going to be videotaping what happens during this session to help us in the analysis process. It is primarily so I dont have to sit here and take notes and allow me to focus on talking to you. The video will be shared with our development team members and me. It is strictly for research and not for public broadcast or publicity or promotion. We would like to start by having your signed consent form, please? Thanks. [If participant does not have a signed consent form, give one to participant and have her/him review and sign now]

Application: Go Baby!

Please know that we are not testing you in any way, and there is no such thing as a wrong answer or a wrong choice. Your participation in this study helps us understand what works or doesnt work about the site. During this session, I will ask you to do a variety of things using our mock iPhone application and will observe you while you do them. As you do these things, please try to do whatever you would normally do. Please try to think out loud while you are working. Just tell me what is going through your mind. Every thought, question or comments is very important for us. I need to know exactly what you think, not what you think I want to hear. Now Id like to read you a statement of informed consent, it set out your rights as a person who is participating in this kind of research. As a participant in this research: You may stop at any time You may ask questions at any time You may leave at any time There is no deception involved Your answers are kept condential

Any questions before we begin? Lets start!

Evaluation Instructions (1 minutes)

The most important thing to remember is that you are testing the interface, the interface is not testing you. There is absolutely nothing that you can do wrong. If anything seems wrong or weird, or especially confusing, its not your fault. However, wed like to know about it. So please tell us whenever anything isnt working for you, or when something does works for you, when you nd a feature you like. Since this application is being designed for people like you, we really want to know exactly what you is working or not working for you. Please remember to narrate what you are doing, kind of like a play-by-play, telling me what you are doing it and why you are doing it. Any questions?

Tasks (20 minutes) Now Id like you to try a couple of things with this application. Work just as you would while using the iPhone, narrating your thoughts as you go. Here is the list of things Id like you to do. [Hand out list] This is the rst scenario: Prole Creation Tasks [Read the rst task, hand out Prole Creation Tasks description sheet] You are the happy parent of a 4 year old son and 11 month old daughter, Stu and Annie. You just downloaded the GoBaby! app after hearing about it from your friends. You thought youd give it a try since others had praises for it. After launching the app, you realize right away that she needs to create her childrens proles to receive the best experience while using the app.

Task 1: From the GoBaby! main screen, enter the prole section and add a prole with the name Stu Carter. Task 2: Knowing that the medical info, contact info, and care info update process is the similar to task 1, now you want to update information for any of these other sections. Task 3: Now you would like to edit the information of an existing prole. ! Prole Creation Post Task Questions: [Please read these questions after each task is completed. Note taker will write down the participants response] Very Easy How difcult was the prole creation process? 1 2 3 4 Very Difcult 5

Post Test Questions (5 minutes) Now we will wrap up this session with a few questions. How would you describe this product in a couple sentences to someone like you? Is this an interesting application? Is this something that you would use? Can you tell me three good things and three bad things about this application? Is there any part of the application that would deter you from using or recommending it? Which and why? What would you like this app to do for you that it doesnt right now? Did the layout of the home screen make sense? Would you say there were too many, too little or just the right number of options to choose from to complete your tasks? Were there any tasks that seemed confusing? If so please explain. If you are a parent of a young child would you nd this app useful? Please explain why or why not. Do you have any nal questions? Comments?
