The footy season is here again and a large number of enthusiastic children have signed on to play for the Blackall Junior Magpies. This year Blackall will be fielding under 6s coached by Kylie Banks, under 8s coached by Brent Gerber, under 10s with Peter Hauff and under 12s with Dan Burton and Mark McKay. Coaches are still needed for the under 14s and 16s so anyone who may be interested is urged to contact the president of the junior league, Peter Hauff. Training will commence at the end of March. The first game for 2009 will be a Junior Cluster Day in Ilfracombe on April 18 where all towns will be competing. Blackall will be playing in new jerseys with slightly different colours. This has been supported by major sponsor Ross and Susan Goodman of Turngood Pty Ltd Emerald, Blackall IGA, Samsung and Retravision. These are sold each week by staff at Schluters Bakery, Pam Carolan at the Memorial Sports Club, Deanne Richardson and Kim Avery at the Blackall State School, Rob Doyle at the Blackall Council Depot, Helen Richardson and Peter and Pauline Fry at Sharkys. Such lovely weather in the past few days. Still warm enough during the day, with wonderful early mornings good enough to make you want to go walking to breathe in the cool, clear air and appreciate the superb lifestyle advantages we have here in our region. The past week has flown by taken up with the extensive community consultation/ information sessions for our new Blackall Tambo Regional Council Corporate Plan held both in Blackall and in Tambo for the public as well as our staff. The process enabled council to gain a great deal of valuable input from those attending. We will have a draft document to present for further public comment in the near future. I would like to thank everyone who took advantage of the sessions for their interest and their time. The new corporate plan will be a huge step forward for council as it considers issues arising in the future, be they environmental, social, economic or governance related. It has been most disturbing to hear of the vandalism to the new skate park appointments, which have been recently installed at considerable cost. There would not be anyone who would condone such destructive behavior in our community. To constantly repair and replace items destroyed means there is less and less money to invest in future community projects. So let us as a community be united in calling for ZERO TOLERANCE to mindless acts of vandalism such as these. The celebration of International Womens Day commenced with a delicious breakfast at the National Bistro, guest speakers included Rebecca Parry President of the Blackall CWA Branch, Jodi MeehanJohnson Acting D.O.N at the Blackall Hospital and Shivani Gandhi. Each lady spoke of their role in our community and the advantages gained by being involved in their programs or organisation. About 40 women attended throughout the morning from 7.30 until 9am. It was a very relaxed and enjoyable gathering. Thank you to Rebecca Parry and Cr Sally Cripps for their efforts in making the arrangements. Im sure everyone enjoyed Mr & Mrs David Hardie the morning. The continuation of Mr & Mrs Dougal Atkinson works on the Jericho Road has seen staff Mrs Heather Wehl engaged in upgrading Mr & Mrs Jack Banks the drainage on this section of road to Mr & Mrs Peter Molle ensure the trafficability Mr & Mrs Steve Picone of the surface in wet weather. There is also Mr & Mrs Ted Scholes preparation for work on the Ward Road in Natalie Billing & Matt the Tambo district with Middleton gravel being stockpiled in readiness for about 4 Wood family kms of new pavement. Barcoo Amateur Race Club I have been delighted to have received Blackall Rural Traders compliments, in recent Butler Grazing P/L days, as to the tidy, clean appearance of both Melrose SAMMs towns. Congratulations Reliance Petroleum to the staff who are engaged in this work Seymours Department Store for the Blackall Tambo St Josephs School P&F Regional Council.

WE MARCHED FOR DEMOCRACY, LETS VOTE FOR DEMOCRACY

Each year we stop to remember the 102,000 fine Australian men and women who gave their lives in defence of the democratic rights of all Australians. Foreign enemies tried and failed to destroy our democracy which is the basic fundamental of our freedom. However, enemies of democracy from within Australia succeeded on the 17th April 2009 with the announcement of

Laser skirmish at Blackall Show Urban Assault Skirmish is the latest high adrenalin laser skirmish game which uses the most modern skirmish guns available in Australia. It is the only skirmish game to have these guns in Queensland, ranging from submachine guns to sniper rifles and the gatling gun. first outing for 2009 at the residence of Marilyn Hobbs in Tambo. Fourteen Blackall ladies and four Tambo ladies enjoyed the view of Icebergs, salvia, ghost plant, white cedar and Jacaranda-lined garden from Marilyns verandah as they indulged in morning tea and a finger food lunch. As a bonus for the day, Bev Bucknell taught the ladies an easy way to strike oleanders. A lovely day was had by all and most ladies went home with a shopping Marilyns garden in Tambo bag of cuttings from the garden. The day concluded with a visit to Alison Shows Shady Shrub nursery to purchase more plants for their gardens. New members are always welcome to join the garden club. CO-OPERA PRESENTS THE MAGIC FLUTE

by WA Mozart

Some of the women that attended the International Womens Day breakfast in Blackall at the National Bistro to enjoy a lovely breakfast and listen to some inspiring and interesting locals. Dear Rowan, Having just finished reading my last two editions of the Barcoo Independent, now under your stewardship, please allow me to congratulate you on your appointment and at the same time, allow me to compliment you on the calibre of the paper. In congratulating you on the calibre of the paper, let me say that I hope I am only one of many who will pay tribute to Sally Cripps for her sterling work in taking on, and indeed, carrying on with the publication of the Barcoo Independent. Of course, tribute should also be paid to those who assisted Sally in her endeavours with the paper and also those people who purchased the paper and kept it alive in the early stages of its struggle to survive. In the coming months I trust you will find Blackall to be a welcoming town populated by people who will offer you their friendship with an expectation that you will become part of the Blackall family for however long you stay in town. I left Blackall 54 years ago to pursue a career in the Queensland Police force and, to this day, look forward to my fairly regular return trips to the town of my birth. With every good wish. Yours faithfully, Allan Kinsey (son of Ossie and Silla Kinsey)

Dear Editor, I was appalled to read in From the Mayors Desk in the Barcoo Independent of 6 March, of the exorbitant increases in State Government fees which have been applied to local governments by the present government. Cr Ross has quoted the financial audit fee for the regional council as $139,000, an increase of $85,000 or 157% over the combined audit fee for the two previous Councils which was $54,000. Fees levied by the Environmental Protection Agency of $17,000, compared to fees levied on the previous Councils of $4,000, represents an increase of $13,000, or a whopping 325%. The EPA fees are mainly for licences for the two rubbish tips. These increases follow a substantial increase in the water licences some time ago. The government has a policy of fees for service, however, these fees are far and away above the cost of any service provided by government. The new fees are nothing other than a blatant tax grab by the state government, or ratepayers, their application is rather ironic, as local governments are required to justify any increases in fees which they impose, surely a case of do as I tell you, but not as I do. Racecourse Brawl On Saturday, March 7 a brawl occurred at the Blackall Racecourse during which a male person sustained serious head injuries. As this matter is the subject of Police investigations, assistance is sought from any person who may have witnessed the incident. Members of the public who can assist are asked to contact the Blackall Police Station on 4657 4200. Blackall icons recognised for Q150 Drivers, start your engines

Jackie Howe and the Black Stump have been recognised alongside some of Queenslands most famous icons. Queensland Premier Anna Bligh has said that Queenslands 150th birthday celebrations are a great time for us to define who we are and what says Queensland to us. Queenslanders have a oncein-a-150 year opportunity to vote on what they think are Queenslands top 150 icons. The current short list of 300 nominations was narrowed down from the 700 nominations that were put forward by the public. The nominations were for icons across 10 categories including state shapers, sports legends, natural attractions and what is typically Queensland. Narrowing this collection down further to the top 150 icons is a decision that has been given to the people of Queensland. Public voting has started and will end on April 30. The Black Stump has been nominated as an attraction in Queensland that put the state on the map along with the Australia Zoo on the Sunshine Coast, the Great Dividing Range and Yatala Pie shop in Brisbane. Jackie Howe has been nominated under the category of typically Queensland, being things, behaviours or traditions that define Queensland and its people. Alongside Jackie Howe is the backyard barbeque, XXXX beer, sunshine, the colour maroon and the Jacaranda tree. More than 3000 votes have been received in the few days that voting has been open. Votes can be placed for these icons to support Blackall online at www.q150.qld.gov. au. The top 150 Queensland icons will be announced during Queensland Week in June. As part of a separate award, Queenslanders are also being encouraged to nominate people or groups whose long term or lifetime achievements have played a significant role in the history and development of Queensland. Since 2001, 40 Queenslanders and three Queensland institutions have been named as Queensland Greats. Previous recipients include World War I veteran Ted Smout OAM, rugby league coach Wayne Bennett OAM and the Royal Flying Doctor Service. People are encouraged to reflect on Queensland over the past 150 years and nominate a friend, colleague, family member, community leader, well known individual or institution that they believe has made a worthy contribution to Queensland. Nomination forms are available online at www. queenslandweek.qld.gov.au or by calling 07 3405 5215. Entries close on Friday, March 20 at 5pm. The 2009 Queensland Greats will be announced by the Premier during Queensland Week.

After much planning and fundraising, 4 blokes from Blackall, Jericho and Barcy are just a few sleeps away from hitting the road for the annual SIDS and Kids Adventure Trek. The beach boys in car 77 with their Hawaiian shirts and boardies will be holding a sausage sizzle at Mitre 10 Blackall on Saturday, March 21. Hinzy, Ruggy, Nifty and Ross have worked hard on the car that will be doing the trek and sourcing sponsors for the entry nomination. Not to mention the efforts that their partners have done behind the scenes without getting to go for the trip around the tropics in dress-up clothes. The free sausage sizzle will give people the opportunity to see the trek car close up. As well as this, there will be a free balloon for the kids and the large wheelbarrow-full of prizes that Hinzy has been pushing around town for the last month will be drawn .and a free balloon for the kids. So get out of bed next Saturday, head down to Mitre 10 to support a cause that searches for answers to an insidious illness that prematurely takes the lives of babies and children.

Blackalls Jo Cripps was amongst the medal winners at the 2009 Hydro Tasmania Australian Rowing Championships last week. Held at Lake Barrington in northern Tasmania, Jo coxed the Brisbane and GPS/Commercial composite crew which collected a bronze medal in the U19 womens VIII final, being just two-tenths of a second away from the silver medal position. Fellow western Queenslander, Karly Scott of Windorah, was also a member of the crew. The rowers faced some extreme conditions during the r e g a t t a , ranging from rain and mist one day to extreme headwinds another, which forced the suspension of racing one afternoon. Jo Cripps
