There has been lots of talk about Heritage Days over the last few weeks, and finally its here. The midway is open, the rodeo is just waiting to begin and people are excited to be outdoors taking it all in. Weve got some great things that people can take in to stay busy and make the time fly until the big performances inside the arena, said Darcy Ledene, general manager for the Ag. Society. Its been a tough battle but in the end everything has come together just as planned, and its all thanks to all the help the Ag Society has received. I just want to personally thank my staff in the office and grounds for their hard work, the committee heads for their dedication, the hundreds of volunteers for their support, the competitors for their enthusiasm and to the many, many sponsors for their backing and support, said Ledene. Its been a very fulfilling year in my new role and I really hope each and every person enjoys the Heritage Days Stampede. Passes have been on sale at Sobeys for a few weeks, and will continue to sell at the store throughout Heritage Days. For $25 people can gain entrance into the grounds and unlimited rides for the day. Friday night will be the fire works show, and Totem will be supplying free popcorn. On Saturday the Cabaret will be taking place at the Family Centre. Rodeo events will take place after 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday, followed by the chuckwagons. On Saturday and Sunday the rodeo begins at 1 p.m., with the popular Running With the Bulls taking place at 6 p.m. and the chuckwagons ending the day. On Monday, the rodeo and chucks begin at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. respectively.

Early bird gets the Heritage Days tickets

The Strathmore Fire Department, SFD, held their early bird draw on July 20. Darcy Ledene, general manger for the Ag Society pulled out the winning raffle ticket, as Ryan Parkins, left and John Silva, right, held the helmet with all the tickets. People who bought their 2012 firefighters calendar early were entered into the draw and Barry Clark was the lucky winner of two all event passes to Heritage Days. To date almost 100 calendars have been sold. There is still one more raffle to go with the SFD, and interested parties should purchase a calendar by early September to still have a chance to win. Go to strathmorefire.ca and fill out the form for the 2012 calendar and one of the firefighters will personally deliver it to people in the Strathmore area. The 50/50 winning number from Canada Days raffle was 322767. m&C Kiemeny from Strathmore had the winning number.
Process to begin for city status

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter The topic of looking into changing from town status to city status has once again been brought forth to council. On July 19 administration asked council for direction as to whether or not they should proceed with the process. The first step of the process would be the public consultation process. We are recommending extensive public consultation and that pending results of the consultation, and the survey that we would bring the results back to an open council meeting for a decision on whether we go forward on city status, said Linda Nelson, Deputy Chief Administrative Officer for the town. Nelson continued on to say there will be numerous public meetings, possible surveys and advertising done to get an idea of which direction the public would like to see Strathmore head to in the future. Councillor Earl Best voiced a number of concerns including the image portrayed and the fact there will be no changes to taxation since many grants are based on a per capita basis. I believe the most significant advantage to the status change would be the increased opportunity for advocacy and image promotion. However our greatest potential liability of taking on city status would be the mandated turnover of responsibility for assumption of responsibilities for primary and secondary highways, said Best. Provincial Highway 817 and likely Highway 1 within town boundaries, when the bypass is complete would be turned over to the municipality. Road grants that the town currently receives would be discontinued and replaced by a different program designed for cities. We would be obliged to change all of the Town signs to City signs, all communication apparatus would need to be changed, and many man hours would be required to change our bylaws and policies to reflect our status change. Best continued on to say if a majority of the town wishes to change to city status it is something that certainly needs to be discussed with the community. I couldnt agree more. This is just the process and lets go with the process. Im not trying to demand anything, its just lets put it out there for the public, and be clear and precise on the whys and why nots, said Mayor Steve Grajczyk. Councillor Bob Sobol also agreed with what was said, but felt a plebiscite would also be required as a part of the public process. While a plebiscite isnt mandatory, Sobol said he feels the issue is important enough to require one. Grajczyk said he would like to have the community itself request one if it is what they want, but did agree it is something to consider later down the road. We can be a little city with a small town attitude, said Grajczyk. I believe that can happen, and I know other communities that are the same. It was a mixed table, with some of council feeling that a change to city status would be beneficial and others not so sure. My personal opinion as a councillor here, I disagree with every thing thats been said here, said Councillor Rocky Blokland. Strathmore city status, this wasnt even an election issue. I see no need for plebiscites or anything else and I will definitely speak against anything to do with anything going towards city status. I see no advantage for Strathmore turning into a city by name only. Blokland said he could see the change costing the municipality money and would like to keep the status quo at this time and use that money instead for street repairs, downtown revitalization and other projects. He said he suggested administration wait until it grows another 5,000 people before looking into a status change. Best made a motion for administration to begin the process of the change of town status to city status and pending the results of the public surveys and consultations, bring the results back to an open council meeting at a later date. Blokland was the only councillor to vote against the motion.

Rockyford had a problem with horse rustlers this past weekend as Black Bart came back after a year to continue his fight with the Sheriff. The Gun Fighters Stunt Club from just outside of Calgary put on a loud, and action packed performance on main Street Rockyford as part of Rockyfords 54th Annual Rodeo weekend. Black Bart and his bad guys fought with the Sheriff and his posse of law abiding good guys with a gun fight, fist fights and blowing up a jail with dynamite. The performers had a great time interacting with their audience of onlookers.

High Eagle RV Resort is a great place for the whole family. They are situated in a cozy valley in Rosebud and offer a great place to rest, relax and explore the Great Canadian Badlands. High Eagle sponsored an antique car show on July 24 with participants coming from the two adjoining provinces of B.C. and Saskatchewan. Owner/operators Jeanne and Ed Sonmor (along with full partner Lars, their 16-year-old son) are leaving a great impression in Rosebud by bringing in tourists apart from those who come to Rosebud for the dinner theatre. Sonmor has partnered with Rosebud Theatre and the Canadian Badlands af-
ter they purchased the property four years ago and upgraded the park-like area to 50 serviced sites with 30-amp power and water on all sites, and can accommodate even large-scale buses and RVs. They have been dubbed The Emerald of the Badlands as they are surrounded by Severn Creek, which runs into the Rosebud and eventually into the Red Deer River. They have spent the last four years clearing away brush and making more sites available to an ever-increasing demand for camping in the area. Sonmor has great plans for expansion to increase tourism and is currently preparing a site to build a covered bandstand/amphitheatre for live concerts in the park. Starland Band from Morrin came out
to entertain spectators with blues, CCR and even some Johnny Cash on a stage off of a flat bed truck. The resort held a 50-50 draw and held a raffle that day as well for all those who came out to enjoy the event. Some of the automobiles showcased included a 53 Chevrolet Bel Air all with its original chrome, and a 1960 Mercury Parklane Convertible. The sun glinted off of the shiny chrome and freshly washed and babied vehicles. Those gathered took the time out to compare vehicles, show off engines and answer questions. Lars Sonmor also has a love for cars and trucks and eagerly showed off his Ford Custom 1974 F100 truck that he is currently working on. WHY HAS MY UTILITY BILL INCREASED?

NEW WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT NEW ENVIROMENTAL WASTEWATER STANDARDS
The Town recently began operating the newly constructed wastewater treatment plant. The new plant a state of the art facility, with a higher capacity that will accommodate growth in the town for years to come, and has significantly improved the quality of the waste water discharged to the Bow River. The Town was obligated to meet a higher environmental standard, imposed by the Alberta government. As a result of the new plant, bio solids are extracted from the system and require disposal. The disposal of the bio solids has become a challenging and a costly effort; currently in the $6,000.00 per week range. The Town is currently looking at alternatives to reduce the cost of the disposal. Additionally, the budget for the 2011 sewer program is $4,875,000.00, which covers the cost of operating the plant.

WATERLINE FROM CALGARY HIGHER WATERCOSTS FROM THE CITY OF CALGARY AGING INFRASTRUCTURE REQUIRING REPLACEMENT PROPOSED NEW RESERVOIR TO ACCOMMODATE TOWN GROWTH
The Town constructed a waterline from Calgary to supply high quality water to the community, which was completed in 2010. A substantial portion of this project was funded through a provincial grant, however, the Town was responsible to fund approximately 13% of the total cost of the $53,000,000 project. In addition, the cost of the water was increased by the supplier, (the City of Calgary), at the beginning of the 2011 year. The Town is required to repair and replace obsolete and aging water distribution infrastructure, and additionally, to provide new infrastructure to accommodate the growth of the town.

Town eyes arena expansion

A request was sent out to the Arena Advisory Board Members to attend the July 19 regular council meeting to discuss the possible construction of a natural ice facility. The potential new building would be a pole building, attached to the current arena. It would be closed in with dressing rooms, but will have a natural ice surface. An artificial ice surface is drastically needed and something that is a natural ice surface, even though it is in the building, with the limited use you cant really schedule it for use because you dont know what the weather is going to be like, you dont know whether or not you can use it creates us a problem, said Wayne Hansen, Strathmore Minor Hockey, SMH, president. Right now Hansen said SMH teams will go to Standard, Hussar, and Gleichen to use the ice because they know it will be there. He said the parents and members of SMH pay a fee and expect to be able to get the ice time they are paying for. As part of SMH bylaws there must be a certain amount of ice per week provided to each team. Hansen said SMH go out of town for 50 per cent of their ice time. Therefore the town loses that revenue. By putting another ice surface up there at the Family Cen-
tre would create a big problem when it come to parking, especially when theres events happening the nights of the games being scheduled, and then you bring all this extra traffic into this other arena. Apparently there isnt enough parking spaces there now for people attending these games, said Councillor John Rempel. The town desperately needs probably two more ice rinks immediately and depending on what growth forecast you have, thats going to change very quickly, so yes if youre going to do it, you need to do it right but the biggest thing is, if youre going to do something get the associations involved, said Hansen. There can be fundraising done, minor hockey has made it very clear that we would support any fundraising efforts that were required to raise a portion to help fill in on any grants or anything else to get this done. As far as the town is concerned, I dont think that the town is going to be building another twin ice arena in the foreseeable future, so if you know of anybody in the private sector thats interested in coming in here and doing something, well I think were all ears, said Rempel. Mayor Steve Grajczyk told Hansen they know that SMH needs more ice, and he would like to see administration and the minor hockey work together to see if a solution can be reached.

Thought for the week ~
Check out your local library. Libraries have more than books. They have movies, music, and free activities for kids and summer reading clubs. Look into a summer pass to the local pool or splash park. Often the community pool will offer summer passes and after just a few swims it will pay for itself. Splash parks are a great way to keep cool and are usually free. Pack a picnic lunch and take the kids for the afternoon. Play. Go for a bike ride. Try geocaching. Visit your local parks. Pack a picnic. Try Frisbee or soccer. Go for a hike. Turn on the sprinkler. Drive to the beach. Play a board game. Bake cookies. There are lots of free activities to do with your kids if youre willing and able to get out and find them. Volunteer your time. Volunteer at a local soup kitchen once a week. Offer to visit an elderly neighbor. Try a weekly park clean up. Volunteering with your kids will not only help the time pass quickly, it will also build their character. Visit out of town family. Youll have to pay for the travel but once youre there food and lodging is minimal if youre staying with family. Just be sure to reciprocate when they come to town. Have a plan. We get out a big family calendar at this time of year and begin filling in the days. We plan what days well be out of town visiting family, what day camps theyll be attending and what days well go to museums. We get to the library once a week to fill up on new books and check out whats available that week. When you have a plan, and know what youre doing, youre less likely to over-spend in the moment.
3 bacon strips, diced cup chopped green pepper cup chopped onion 2 (15 ounce) cans pork and beans 1/3 cup hickory barbeque sauce 1/3 cup packed brown sugar 2 teaspoons prepared mustard
In a skillet, cook bacon over medium heat until crisp; remove to paper towels. Drain and reserve 1 tbsp. drippings. Saute green pepper and onion in drippings until tender. In a bowl, combine both cans of beans, barbecue sauce, brown sugar, mustard and green pepper and onion. Transfer to a greased 1-qt. baking dish. Bake, uncovered, at 350 degrees F for 35-40 minutes or until bubbly and heated through. Sprinkle with bacon.

Protecting Canadian Citizenship

Kevin SorenSon, M.P., Crowfoot Parliamentary Report Our Conservative government is taking action to protect the integrity of Canadian Citizenship by revoking approximately 1800 Citizenships from individuals who did not choose Canada as home but instead are using our country as a pit-stop of convenience. We are pursuing those persons who have obtained their Canadian citizenship through fraudulent means. Canada is one of the most desirable destinations in the world for immigrants. Our peace loving and law-abiding population has built a prosperous nation with many opportunities. As well, we enjoy health and social benefits at home and a passport that is welcomed virtually anywhere on earth. As such, there are many nefarious people targeting our nation and looking to take advantage of our generosity and the innocent people genuinely trying to immigrate to Canada. We are a nation built on immigration and everyone who has worked hard to satisfy the requirements of immigrating to Canada are understandably very upset when they see the integrity of Canadas Immigration system being compromised. Bogus asylum claimants, crooked immigration consultants, people smugglers, are examples of those abusing our citizenship program. Some of the 1800 people targeted are believed to have used dishonest consultants who submitted fraudulent applications on behalf of people who already failed to meet the qualifications for citizenship -- such as residency requirements. Canadian taxpayers are frustrated as well because many of these bogus immigrants do not pay taxes in Canada. Once they receive their Canadian Citizenship, they continue to earn offshore many times the amount of money they would earn in Canada. RCMP Briefs
Fatal collision On July 22, just after midnight, Strathmore RCMP attended a two vehicle collision south of Indus, at the intersection of Highway 22X and Secondary Highway 791. The investigation revealed that a small car southbound on Secondary Highway 791 with two occupants went through a stop sign at Highway 22X and were struck by an eastbound tractor/trailer unit. Both occupants of the car died at the scene. The driver of the semi truck was uninjured. Alcohol is not suspected as being a factor in the collision and while the investigation remains ongoing, there are no charges pending. The two deceased that were driving the 2005 Volkswagen Jetta have been identified as 40-year-old Shannon Hocking and 43-yearold Darren Gay, both of Coldstream, B.C. theFt From vehicles On July 25, the Strathmore RCMP received several complaints of unlocked vehicles being entered and personal property being disturbed during the night in Standard. In one incident, a Sirius Satellite radio was stolen. The RCMP are continuing to investigate and are looking for any information pertaining to these incidents. The RCMP also want to take this opportunity to remind residents to keep their vehicles locked and to remove any valuables. When police arrived on scene, fire crews were battling the blaze; both barns were fully engulfed in flames. It is believed that approximately 500-600 pigs perished in the blaze; there were no persons injured in the fire. The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time, foul play is not suspected. Aerial application, commonly called crop dusting, involves spraying crops with fertilizers, pesticides, and fungicides from an agricultural aircraft. The specific spreading of fertilizer is also known as aerial topdressing. This was taking place just south of Rosebud on a Canola Crop in the area. A spectacular show of aerial performance and precise accuracy with each turn he made.

Getting ready to be judged

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter Strathmore Communities in Bloom members are hoping to get top recognition this year when the judges come through town on August 9. Last year Strathmore was awarded four blooms from the Communities in Bloom judges, and this year the goal is to get five. The judges will arrive in town on the 8th, and first thing the next morning they will be off to meet members of the town staff, the mayor and a number of others. We hope to get five (blooms). I really think this is our year because we have had our centennial for one thing, and have done some new things with the centennial, the Heritage Times Square for one and the celebrations on the second and third (of July), said Robert Breitwieser, chairman of Communities in Bloom Strathmore. Communities in Bloom itself has had a number of projects weve done this year, weve added five more banners, and the heritage banners and weve printed more information in the booklet. Weve done a mural, which is on the dental building right across from Heritage Times Square and weve also done the Centennial Community Garden, which is on the property of the Anglican Church. So those are some new projects that weve done this year, and we think theyll probably catch the attention of the judges. Were also hoping that people in the community will kind of get together and clean up their property, especially the businesses. He said in the last few years Strathmore has scored low on the business end of stuff so Communities in Bloom are hopeful the businesses will fix up, trim and make their business look presentable. Breitwieser said its a challenge Communities in Bloom is throwing out to the business community. I know that there are a number of businesses along the highway that are a real distraction. If I were somebody coming into town from out of town I wouldnt stop there because they look so messy, so were hopeful that theyll pick up on that, said Breitwieser He does have some tips for businesses, or anyone who wants to shape up their home a bit, just in time for the judging. Some of the things suggested are cleaning up litter, attend to landscaping, removing unwanted weeds, empty trash containers, sweep parking areas, paint deteriorated wood, wash windows, put out baskets or containers with flowers, and finally, put on a happy face and engage the judges when they come by.

Volunteer fire departments from Rockyford and Rosebud were called from their beds early in the morning on July 18 to deal with a hay fire caused from a lightning strike at Randy melchers farm north of Rockyford. melcher lost 38 stacks of hay in the fire.

A major fire devastated the Sandhills Hutterite Colony July 24, when a hog barn caught fire. Fire crews from Rockyford, Dalum Rosebud and Strathmore rural were kept busy for hours during the ordeal. Unconfirmed reports state that there were approximately 700 hogs in the barn when the fire started and about 600 of them died in the fire or had to be destroyed.

Town holds off on transportation study

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter As part of a commitment to the Calgary Regional Partnership, which the Town is a member of, an RFP, Request For Proposal was sent out for a feasibility study. The recommendation from administration was for council to accept the proposal from Stantec for a total of $20,864, including GST. The cost of the study had previously been approved and budgeted for by council. I think were putting the cart before the horse here. I think were well ahead by doing this study than where we are or where we will be in the future and in that case. I dont know that I can go with this, said Councillor Earl Best. Its a long process and communities in the area are realizing that having knowledgeable transportation and planning for transportation in the future encompasses a whole bunch of different areas, said Councillor Bob Sobol. Planning and future transportation is hand in hand. If we dont know what our future needs are or when our needs are going to kick in, its very difficult for us to have a formulized plan in regards to how we build and where we build, and what kind of facilities we build. Its all connected, planning is an integral part of the transportation issue. The information were going to get from a feasibility study is going to affect many of our departments and its going to be information that were going to use and we can plan with. Sobol said the best way to think of the future is by having a feasibility study done which can help assess the needs of the community as it grows, and will give a rough idea of when would be the time to start looking into different things in regards to transportation. Councillor John Rempel was concerned that it may be premature to conduct such a study at this point. Councillor Fule made the point to council that if the town is considering city status and a number of other things, then the study is something which should be done right away. I think if were going to step into the future we need studies like this to show us the right direction to take. We cant suddenly become a city, if thats the wish of the people, and then all of a sudden realize we dont have a transit system or transportation, said Councillor Dave Hamilton. We may as well do it now than later, pay it now or pay it later. Mayor Steve Grajczyk did say that he believes the study is important, but would like to see it put off for at least one more year, to see whats happening with the economy. Sobol reiterated the fact that the study wouldnt only be for transportation, but would also deal with a lot of planning issues and how to go about planning for the future. It is actually quite helpful with work that well be doing for the Municipal Development Plan because a lot of this does actually impact design, urban design for communities because you want connectivity, said Tammy Henry, Director of Planning and Development for the Town. You dont want dead end roads and things like that. It does have some clear linkages to future planning, and forethought for new communities in town. Sobol made a motion to accept the proposal from Stantec to conduct a regional transit feasibility study that may approve linkages to other communities for a total of $20,864. The motion was defeated with only councillors Hamilton, Sobol and Fule voting in favour.

When it comes to re-painting, everyone wants to avoid repeat peeling - and you can. Peeling on ceilings is common when several layers of paint, with low binder content, build up over the years, especially in older homes. These layers of paint can include calcimine, white wash and other soft finishes. The solvents in the new coat soften and dissolve the old finish, which comes off and adheres to the applicator, particularly to roller covers. Remove as much of the old coating as possible by scraping or by using chemical removers. Often this can be done by wetting the finish with hot water and scraping with a four-inch blade. Sand smooth and apply a coat of oil based primer-sealer. Repaint with latex or oil ceiling paint. Peeling form wall plaster could be a result of insufficient wet troweling of the white coat when the plaster was applied, causing chalking of the surface. Another possible reason for peeling is the use of a flue size, which absorbs water, underneath the paint. All new plaster should be primed after a minimum of 30 days of curing to reduce moisture and alkali. After curing and before painting, wipe the plaster with a damp cloth to remove powder and dust. If pealing has occurred, it is best to remove as much of the present paint and primer as possible by sanding and using a chemical remover before repainting. On chalky plaster, an oil base primer is recommended because the oil wets the chalk and adheres better than water base primers. Before repainting, its worth your efforts to prepare the surface and prevent repeat peeling.

Ridge road repairs will be soon underway

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter The tender for the repair work on Ridge Road has been approved, and was awarded to North Star Contract Inc., who provided the lowest bid. North Stars bid was lower than what the initial pre-tender budget was, and due to the fact that the repairs will be paid for through grant funding, the town is obligated to award the contract to the lowest tender. The work, which is set to begin August 2 after Heritage Days, will start just to the west of the Station restaurant and will continue to Lakeside Blvd. AquAtic centre The Aquatic Centre expansion project was recently completed and there is a minor problem with the new multipurpose rooms a lack of air conditioning. The air conditioning that was put into the building was to service the main entry area and the Chuck Mercer room, but it was not put into the multi-purpose rooms. Council approved an additional capital project in the amount of $17,500 to fix the problem. The funds will be drawn from the financial stabilization reserve. The contract was awarded to Carmichael Engineering. BAyside PlAce As part of the affordable housing project, Bayside Place, council had asked for a sidewalk to be installed from Thomas Drive to the new condo units. The town agreed to provide one third of the cost to install the new sidewalk, with the other two portions to be shared with the two affordable housing developers. The estimated cost is approximately $90,000, with the Town paying $30,000. The Town is considered a developer in the project, which is why they are cost sharing for the sidewalk project.

Conservative leadership hopeful comes to Strathmore

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter Progressive Conservative leadership candidate Gary Mar was in Strathmore on July 14, to talk to his potential constituents about what he plans to do for Alberta. The PC party is currently looking for a new leader after Premier Ed Stelmach announced in January he had decided not to run for re-election. Its a big decision, but to me its an important one because Alberta has been my familys home for over 100 years, and I want it to be our familys home for the next 100 years, said Mar. The opportunities for Alberta are tremendous and having had a broad set of experiences in cabinet, in healthcare, in education, in environment among others and combining that with the last three and a half years when I was in Washington, DC, being Albertas representative makes me have a great appreciation for Alberta, and a vision for the future. Im very optimistic about the opportunities that are available to Alberta, and I have a strong understanding about how we can achieve those opportunities. Mar also has the support of local MLA Arno Doerkson with his leadership campaign. Ive considered the options and we have some strong options with regard to the leader of the party and the next premier of the province, said Doerkson. Garys a strong communicator, I think he understands the issues that are important to all Albertans, the importance of health care and education. Gary has had a lot of experience in international trade, thats certainly important to us in the agricultural industry and the energy industry in the province, and I guess I think hell make a strong contribution to the future of our province and Im pleased to support him in his leadership bid. Mar has been involved in politics for the past 18 years. From 1993 to 2007 he was an MLA in Calgary, and he served as Minister of Community Development, Minister of Education, Minister of Environment, Minister of Health, Minister of International and Intergovernmental Relations. To me we have challenges in areas like healthcare and education, but they look solvable to me. Because of my experience in those areas those challenges look solvable, said Mar. Mar said that he created when he was Health Minister in 2003. A primary care network is a group of health professionals that work as a team with a doctor. He said if you go to your doctors office and you have a sprained foot, you might not need to see a doctor, you might need to see a physical therapist. If you are a diabetic you might see a registered dietician instead of a doctor, and so by creating these teams you improve your access to seeing a doctor when you need a doctor, because the doctor is spending his or her time diagnosing people instead of doing things other people can do, said Mar. What that also does is it reduces the number of unnecessary visits to emergency rooms because you would see a primary health care team instead of going to emergency, and thats the core to how we improve the healthcare system. Mar said the wait times for surgeries is due to an inefficient system. He said the doctor may say you need to see and orthopedic surgeon and then they will call all of the surgeons they know to see who would be able to fit the patient in. Instead, Mar said, the doctor should have a single number they could call, a centralized reservation system so that the doctor calls the one number, and then the next available surgeon will take the patient. It was done was before during my time as Minister of Health but its essentially not had the kind of financial support that it should have, and so its not being done in the same way anymore, said Mar. Those are all ideas that we can work on but, its quite important that we focus on the future, there are others who are focused on the past, but to me Im focused on the future and the future opportunities for Albertans. Mar wants to make Alberta work, which is the focus of his campaign. He said our government has to do more listening and less telling, they have to help Albertans not hinder them, they have to be focused on the future and not on the past. The other PC leadership hopefuls are Doug Griffiths, Doug Horner, Alison Redford, Rick Orman and Ted Morton. The first ballot election will be taking place September 17, and if no candidate has over 50 per cent of the vote the second ballot with the top three candidates will take place Oct. 1. While most people were tucked away in their bed, a severe thunderstorm rumbled through Strathmore and Wheatland County on July 18. While the cracks of thunder may not have awakened some people, the lightning definitely lit up the night.
Making a dream come true

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter Finding a place to fit into the community can sometimes be hard for special needs people, which was one of the reasons why Betty and Katy Webster bought Audreys Consignment. On June 6 the mother and daughter bought the store and have since renamed it Katys Consignment. She (Katy) has worked at other places in town doing kind of the same thing, and we just wanted more for Katy than that because shes really smart, said Betty. Also one of the reasons that we decided to do this was, first of all its really difficult for her to find a job in this community. There are a lot of people that are really hesitant about it, and also shes had a few jobs where they begrudgingly accepted her. Were hoping with this store what we could do is reach out to the community, and they could get to know Katy, and find out how much fun she is and how comfortable they can be around her. Betty thought purchasing a consignment store would be an ideal fit. It would provide a way for Katy to access the whole community. Katy has been helping to do the pricing, taking care of the purses, and will eventually be learning how to work the cash register. Working the cash and doing the transactions has sort of been a dream of Katys for sometime so she is excited for when she learns how to do them. I normally dorearranging of all the clothes and make sure they are (in good shape), said Katy. Its a big step, but something Ive been thinking about for a long time and actually (I) originally thought about a coffee shop. It was just too much work for (myself) and for her. She would be back cleaning and wiping tables, and so I thought this is a whole different (thing), said Betty. What I like about this store is once the holding has expired after a certain amount of time, we contact the Siksika Nation, the Crisis Centre and also the womens crisis centre to see if we can donate clothes to them. If not, then we donate them to the cerebral palsy bins

Both women are board members with the Hope Bridges Society which Betty said is very important in their life because one of the goals of Hope Bridges is to reach out to everyone that is marginalized, whether they are disabled, a senior or someone that is new to the country, and find a way to make them part of the community. Its just a matter of Katy being visible to the community and the community
respecting her position and her right to be in the community, said Betty. She feels most of the time its just a matter of educating people, and she thinks Strathmore is the ideal community to embrace the special people in town. With the exception of Mondays and Fridays when Katy is taking part in programs at the Foothills AIM Society she can be seen at the store, usually around the purses, which she loves.

Scott Schiffner
Local cowboy Scott Schiffner was surprised when he found out he was named the recipient of the 2011 Guy Weadick Memorial Award. Since 1969 the award has been presented annually to the Calgary Stampede rodeo or chuckwagon competitor who best personifies what they think being a cowboy stands for. The award is based on ability, appearance, showmanship, character, sportsmanship and cooperation with all different aspects of being a Stampede competitor. Its something that as a bull rider all the different awards Ive won, you expect to win them, you put it on yourself to win them. This isnt an award that you know youre really out there trying to win, but it means a lot, said Schiffner. What it is, is it means what kind of person you are, and that youve hopefully helped the rodeo throughout the years instead of just what youve won in the arena as far as riding and roping. Im usually not too stuck for words on stuff like that and when they took me up on stage I was a little bit more stuck for words than usual. Its a pretty big honour. Its nice to know youve maybe made a difference in rodeo. Guy Weadick worked with H.C. McMullen, George Lane and A.E. Cross to bring the first ever Calgary Stampede in September of 1912. On behalf of the Strathmore Heritage Days Stampede, congratulations to Scott Schiffner on being the 2011 recipient of the Guy Weadick award at the Calgary Stampede, said Darcy Ledene with general manager for the Strathmore Ag Society. Schiffner will be competing on Sunday, July 31 during Heritage Days.

Reds to host T2 provincials
Shannon LECLair Times Reporter People looking to take a break from Heritage Days activities, but not wanting to stray far from the rodeo grounds, will have an option other than going home. They will be able to head over to the Ag. Society ball diamonds and watch the Strathmore Reds peewee competitive ball team compete in Tier 2 provincials. The first game begins at 9 a.m. July 29, and will run until the 31. The eight teams, including Strathmore, are Stony Plain, Fort Saskatchewan, Westerdale, Westlock, Bonnyville, South Jasper Place and Sherwood Park. Weve got good facilities and weve put on a good show in the past. We get good support from Baseball Alberta to host, said Daren Kennett, coach for the Reds peewee team. I think its going to be really busy with obviously Heritage Days and lots of stuff going on up there. So they can come and play baseball and enjoy baseball but also enjoy other things as well. Kennett said he doesnt believe there will be an entry fee, but they will be selling 50/50 squares and people are more than welcome to buy in and help raise money.

Manny EvErEtt Times Contributor The Rockyford Stampede grounds were bustling with kids aged 0 to 99, and you could hear the sound of spurs in the air as the Rockyford Lions Club in conjunction with the Ag Society put on their 54th annual rodeo this past weekend. There is something to be said of our small rural towns coming together like family to put on such great shows and entertainment for their towns and local surrounding communities. The stands at the Rockyford Rodeo grounds were filled starting Friday afternoon with Mutton Bustin for those kids who live and breathe rodeo. The regular events started Friday evening with chariot races, relay races and the ever-popular chuckwagon races. The Friday night events closed with a family dance featuring live entertainment by TC & Company. Early risers on Saturday morning were treated to a free chuckwagon pancake breakfast starting at 7 a.m. and had time for it to settle before the Grande Parade down Main Street at 10 a.m. Kids scrambled for candy, freezies, hats, shirts and more as the participants paraded twice through their downtown core. A gun fight proceeded after the parade in front of the local grocery store on Main Street by Alberta stuntmen from gunfightersstuntclub.com. This is the second year that Black Bart (Frank Huish) made his appearance in Rockyford. Huish, the leader of the posse, was one of the first to start this group back in 1982. These gentlemen worked in the movie business and liked it so much they started their gun fighters stunt club. They perform all over Alberta at the Stampede and Heritage Park for corporate events. Sheriff (Brian Jackson) and his good guys prevailed in the end after failed attempts to jail the bad guys, who

ended up blowing up the jail with dynamite. These stuntmen put on an amazing performance with gun fights, fist fights and even shot a hi-fall guy off the roof of the Rockyford Grocery Store. It was a show that was loud and interacted with their captivated audience really well. Both Saturday and Sunday the rodeo grounds were packed with fans and spectators and contestants waiting for their events to come up. The infield rodeo events such as bull riding, steer wrestling, and calf roping didnt fail to impress the crowd gathered all three days. New this year was bull soccer where two teams of four participants each played a game of soccer on the infield with a bull at large. Some of the guys on the field got so tied up with watching the ball that they forgot about the menacing bull. It was un to watch and the crowd cheered them on from the stands. Good job, Rockyford, on your 54th annual rodeo.

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter Inter-cities took place July 16 to 17 and saw Edmontons best soccer teams play against Calgarys best soccer teams. Three Strathmore Minor Soccer teams took part in the weekend, the U12 boys and the U12 and U16 girls teams. For coach Ken Oliphant and his team, the U16 girls, going to play in the Intercities was a goal they had set from the beginning of the season. Oliphant said most of the girls showed up in Edmonton on the Friday wanting to make the most of the weekend. On Saturday the team was up against the top Edmonton team, Parkview, who they beat 2-1. I think the Sunday game was just one game too many. We didnt have any spares so we lost that game. The girls did absolutely everything they could, and they played really well and they didnt embarrass anybody which is good, said Oliphant. The girls were scheduled for three games, but then the other Calgary team dropped out at the last minute and so the U16 girls basically represented the Calgary Minor Soccer. Oliphant said he was happy with the way the girls played. They beat the top Edmonton team and he said obviously the second team was a little too much for them. The girls still came out with a silver medal. Its a great way to finish the year and its a great way for all the hard work that the girls put in to get second. To come away with something was good, said Oliphant. The girls (with) the amount of effort and support they have given me to turn up and play the game was really good. So to get the silver, it was a good return for them. He said the girls were pleased, the parents were very supportive and the weather was good. He said they couldnt have asked for a better weekend for it. I want to thank the girls for their hard work, and I certainly want to thank the parents for the support because theyve been brilliant throughout the season. If Ive asked for anything, theyve all done it, said Oliphant. He said one girl was on vacation in California for the two weeks prior to Inter-cities, and he was really struggling for players so her mom and dad drove all the way back so she could attend The U12 girls also had an issue with wearing themselves out too early thanks to a lack of subs. They won the first game of the weekend 5-2, but lost the second game 3-2, coming home with bronze. The U12 boys also walked away with a silver medal from the weekend.

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter Elite Hockey Development Camps are coming to Strathmore again this summer, and this year there are a few new camps. The full day hockey school starts on August 8 and run to the 12th. The advantage program which normally runs in the spring will instead begin on August 15 and go until Sept. 10 this year, and is already almost full. This year Elite Hockey is also running a shooting and scoring clinic, a checking clinic and a conditioning camp for bantam and midget players. Our hockey camps mostly were based around the hockey development with peewee and under so a lot of the kids that weve taught are now in bantam or midget and theres nothing for them, said Doug Raycroft, director of Elite Hockey Development Camps. Weve had people say theres not a lot for the kids that age, so we thought we would offer this conditioning camp to get kids kind of in shape and ready for the hockey season. With the full day camp the kids are on the ice twice a day, working on drills and fundamentals before going outside to have fun with the group and their friends. The advantage program is a little bit conditioning as well as development, and Raycroft said the kids use it to get into shape before tryouts and things like that. The checking clinic is for anybody going into peewee hockey. Its the players first year of body checking, which can be stressful for both the parents and kids. Some of the peewee age kids can have quite a big difference in size and ability, and they need to know how to be safe on the ice. Its four sessions in which they instruct the kids to be safe on the ice, how to play the body, how to give hits, how to take hits, and for the new kids it gives them a chance to get used to being hit in a controlled session, building their confidence for on the ice. The shooting and scoring clinic is about improving offensive skills and the bantam and midget conditioning camp is a high tempo camp that is meant to get the players in shape for the season. Players will be worked hard in the bantam and midget conditioning camp because thats what Raycroft said he has heard people want. Hockey, its no different then anything else, the more youre on the ice the more youre getting instruction the better youre going to get. I think that the full day camp that we have is just great for mixing hockey development and fun, said Raycroft.
