Theories of Leadership and their Relevance to Current Business Environment

In early epochs the most widespread leadership theory was the Autocratic Style that was practiced for quite a while, it gives all dominance to the leaders and decision making is federal whereas other members of the organization abide to their leader and his/her decisions. Afterwards an era of theoretical evolution arrived and leaders were expected to make a participative approach. This involved a leader to accommodate others opinion in their decision (James and Burgoyne, 2001). With ever increasing competition in modern business environment there has been an immense decrease in the availability of time for decision making. Consequently another leadership theory stemmed up which is more germane to contemporary competitive business environment. This theory is known as Transformational Leadership and perceives that anyone can be transformed into a leader. Furthermore having this theory, lower tier players of a team are induced and empowered to act as leaders of their own unit and execute their own decisions. This functions suitably with current business environment and is in practice today by incalculable organizations (James and Burgoyne, 2001).
